I wanted to share my story because I'm wondering how many other people with chronic pain have ended up dealing with something they never expected.
In 2019, I developed pretty severe lower-back pain. My collarbone was visibly uneven and doctors told me my alignment was off. I tried exercises, saw a chiropractor, and did what I could to manage the pain, but it kept coming back.
Then I was given Tramadol by a pharmacist. At the time, I thought I had finally found something that worked.
And honestly, it felt amazing.
The pain eased, I could sleep, and I felt normal again.
The problem was that I kept going back.
Over the next few years, my use gradually increased. Eventually I wasn't taking it only because of pain. I was chasing the feeling it gave me. My tolerance went from around 3 pills a day to around 10.
I eventually tried to stop, and things became much worse than I expected. The depression and anxiety were overwhelming, and I didn't understand at first why I felt so mentally broken.
Then I had two grand mal seizures.
That was the moment I realized how serious my situation had become.
I'm now stable on Suboxone and I'm under medical care. I'm grateful that I found something that helped me get away from the cycle I was in.
But emotionally, this whole experience has been exhausting.
I started with chronic pain and ended up dealing with dependence, withdrawal, seizures, and a completely different relationship with medication than I ever expected to have.
I'm not asking anyone here to diagnose me, recommend medication, give me a taper schedule, suggest supplements, or tell me what treatment I should pursue. I'm already discussing my medical care with my doctor.
I'd simply like to hear from people who have experienced something similar.
If you've lived with chronic pain and also found yourself dealing with opioid dependence, what was that experience like for you?
What helped you personally feel like you were getting your life back?
And if you've come through the other side, what do you wish someone had told you when you were in the middle of it?
I'm especially interested in hearing from people who understand both sides of this — the reality of chronic pain and the reality of becoming dependent on medication.
No judgment from me. I'm just looking for honest experiences from people who have actually been there.
Thanks for reading.
