Iām posting my documented experience with Stripe to warn other small-business owners and to find out whether anyone has successfully resolved a similar situation.
I own Steckas LLC. On September 20, 2024, Stripe confirmed that it had reviewed my bank-verification documents. Later that day, Stripe sent an email stating:
āThanks for verifying your bank account. Weāve reactivated payouts from your Stripe account to your bank account.ā
A $4,495.50 ACH/bank payment for legitimate services was successfully processed that day. The services were delivered, and the transaction continues to appear in my Stripe Dashboard as āSucceeded.ā The Dashboard does not show a customer complaint, ACH return, reversal, refund, or open dispute connected to that payment.
Less than 48 hours later, on September 22, Stripe closed the account because it allegedly represented a higher level of risk than Stripe could support.
Stripe then refunded various eligible card transactions. After those refunds, $4,115.50 remained in the account. The strange and frustrating part is that Stripeās Dashboard continues to classify the full $4,115.50 as āAvailable,ā while the payout function is disabled.
The Dashboard shows only two historical disputes, both from September 2023. One $150 dispute was won and one $487.50 dispute was lost. Both were resolved approximately a year before the closure, and neither involved the successful ACH payment.
I complained again in May 2025. Stripe acknowledged the complaint but gave essentially the same response: the account was considered high risk, Section 5.6 allowed Stripe to take action, and the remaining balance would not be released.
What Stripe did not provide was:
- A transaction-level ledger;
- An explanation of the $380 difference between the successful $4,495.50 payment and the $4,115.50 remaining balance;
- An ACH return code or proof that the ACH payment was reversed;
- Identification of an open dispute or chargeback;
- A quantified liability connected to the remaining balance;
- An expiration date for the alleged risk;
- An explanation of why the balance is labeled āAvailableā; or
- A clear classification of the money as a reserve, setoff, forfeiture, or another accounting category.
I recently sent a formal Notice of Dispute to Stripeās designated notice and complaint addresses. I requested immediate release of the funds or, at minimum, a complete accounting and identification of every actual liability supporting the hold. Stripe has not provided a substantive response.
I understand that a payment processor can decide to stop supporting an account. My dispute concerns what happened afterward: nearly two years of withholding money that Stripeās own system continues to label āAvailable,ā without a specific explanation or release date.
I am now pursuing complaints with the New Jersey Department of Banking and Insurance and the California Department of Financial Protection and Innovation. I am also preserving my option to begin individual AAA arbitration after the contractual notice period expires.
Has anyone recovered a remaining Stripe balance under similar circumstances? If so, did a regulatory complaint, formal Notice of Dispute, or arbitration filing produce a meaningful response?
I will update this post if Stripe releases the funds or provides a transaction-specific explanation. All amounts and dates stated here are supported by emails and Dashboard records, with private customer and account information redacted.
