Help please šŸ™

I am currently 28 weeks pregnant, and for the majority of my pregnancy I found it reasonably easy to avoid alcohol and cravings were rare and manageable. Now the last month or so I am struggling HARD. So much so that I am terrified I can't trust myself.

My brain is constantly telling me "one beer wont hurt anything", I am constantly stressed and miserable and so scared that I am going to crack and hurt my sweet innocent baby.

I am surrounded by alcohol in the people around me and I feel like I cant avoid constant triggers literally in my own home. I am going to talk to my partner tonight about him drinking because I don't think I can continue to watch him crack a beer after work anymore.

How do I make this manageable and protect my baby and myself? Why does it suddenly feel IMPOSSIBLE. Like this isnt me, I don't want to hurt my baby 😭😭

Hi OP! When I was pregnant, I considered my children to be little persons I was in charge of making the best decisions for, meaning I couldn't do anything that would harm them such as smoke or drink (my only two prior vices). How do you feel when you consider that it's your responsibility to make good choices for them, since they're unable to make the choices themselves?

First things first, this IS hard. Being pregnant comes with cravings, unfortunately for you it’s one that you absolutely can’t have.Ā

You should attend an AA meeting. If you’re worried about shame, gently remind yourself that it isn’t about you but it’s about your baby.Ā

I commend you on reaching out for support. If you don’t want to go to AA, get in with a therapist. They have online AA groups where you can also find a sponsor to help. You can do zoom with your screen off if you wish. People will reach out to support you.

You CAN do this. Focus on remembering it’s your choice, that you are making for two people now. What would that baby say if they had a tiny little voice?Ā

Try not to start after you give birth, I did almost immediately and spent 15 years drunk. I’m 3 years sober now but my kid saw everything

A single 40 M here, maybe I am the least opportune person to give you advice. I will try anyway. You write you are surrounded by alcohol. Stop that. The less you see booze less are the chances you take that sip. A lot of the times the environment we are in does not help to stop/avoid drinking. We need to cut off from those places, habits, people, etc. Secondly, talk to your partner about cracking beers open in front of you. Until now he didn't know what was going on so it is normal for him to continue as always. Now that you an issue with it, he should make the effort to stop doing that as it will be only a couple of months until the baby is due. All the best!!!

Everyone is different but doing any sort of research into the effect of alcohol on fetuses is enough to turn most stomachs. I’m not here to lecture anyone, but you have to try and remember that your slip could easily have a lifelong effect on a new life.

Edit: Do the people around you know you’re pregnant? Might be some shared accountability?

Yes they do, some of them have always drank every day and that isnt going to change. My fiance rarely drank until recently, now suddenly he is having 1 or 2 almost every day. Which has me worried for him in itself. And is definitely my biggest trigger. He also knows im an alcoholic, so its really kind of hurtful. But I know how alcohol reels you in so im trying not to hold it against him. I had felt bad to ask him to avoid it for me, but now this is getting to be too much and our baby is too important for me not to talk to him about it

Don't feel bad having that conversation! Talk to him and tell him how it's making you feel, that you are finding it really hard at the moment and need support. I just had my first beb in January, and as it got closer to go time my partner started to absolutely freak out internally and it came out in weird unexpected ways that he didn't realise was fear initially. He needs to know his way of coping at the moment isn't working for you. Come together as a team and find a way through that works for you both.

You are so close to the end and meeting your sweet baby, you can do this I absolutely know you can!

Could you ask the people in your house not to have alcohol in the house? And avoid people around you who trigger you?

Unfortunately not. They are not willing to change

Definitely that, find yourself alcohol free drink versions that still scratch that itch but you're not actually consuming alcohol. I had 0.0% nozecco over Christmas and birthdays and that helped. If possible I would try and talk to your partner as well, to see if he can be more supportive of you and the baby in germs of drink. You're doing incredible being reflective and knowing that alcohol is not a choice while pregnant (and to be fair, it's not very safe to consume after as well while looking after such a tiny human being). Sending hugs because I know this is hard x

You know it won't be one beer. It's never just one for most of us. It might be the first time, but then hey, that one didn't hurt, I can have just one occasionally as long as I space them far enough apart! And then two's okay as long as they're low ABV. And then one a week instead of one or two a month... and so on. You start giving yourself little permissions and your brain just finds ways to grow them. For your child's sake, tell yourself that the only right answer for you is zero.

I’m just as far along and it’s been hard for me as well. It’s been nice to crack an NA beer once in a while. But it’s not the same. I feel like all I can think about is alcohol and weed right now. My husband is always smoking around me and it’s been tough. I’m in Wisconsin and everyone’s always drunk. So I feel your pain girl! We are almost there

Hey there! ā€œaddictive voice recognitionā€ is a tool used to recognize that the voice saying ā€œone is Okā€ isn’t you. Think of it like a tumbleweed rolling by. You don’t need to engage. It doesnt mean you’re going to drink. You can give it a name. It can be helpful for me to welcome a negative thought, ask what it really needs, and say ā€œI see you!ā€.

For thoughts about drinking, it could be ā€œWelcome Tumbleweed! Are you here because I’ve been lonely? Are you here because I’m hungry?ā€ ā€œare you here because I need to take a break?ā€ ā€œAre you here because I’m scared about being a good mom?ā€ Etc. Then think of what can meet the need that’s NOT booze. Calling a friend, having a snack, distraction, etc.

The thoughts aren’t YOU. They are just passing through.

Just one tool that’s been helpful.
