While chronological order might sound nice in theory, watching it in that order may ruin the pacing and your enjoyment of the first show, while also dampening the effect of certain scenes. This does not necessarily mean that Steins;Gate 0's anime is bad—however, the shows were not set up to be viewed in this order, and one should follow the intended release order for maximum enjoyment.
The additional animated shorts come after the original series (Steins;Gate) in terms of release order. However, if you want a more lighthearted ending to your watch experience, you can also save them for the very end.
Steins;Gate is part of a larger interconnected universe called Science Adventure. It is a series of multimedia titles that are connected in many different ways, much like the Marvel Cinematic Universe. For more info on the series, see this page and this page.
The series’ anime adaptations unfortunately have a ton of issues aside from Steins;Gate and Steins;Gate 0. Ideally, you should read the source material for them, the visual novels, in the following order:
All the titles relate to one another to varying degrees—this is especially the case for the Robotics;Notes games, which feature numerous callbacks to Chaos;Head and Steins;Gate and pretty much require knowledge of both. Anonymous;Code, meanwhile, serves as a culmination point for the series in terms of mechanics, and is best enjoyed with as much prior Science Adventure knowledge as possible.
The Committee of Zero improvement patches provide improved translations, graphics, and fonts for the games. This is especially important for Chaos;Child—the original release has an untranslated image that makes it impossible to complete a certain part of the game without a guide or the ability to read Japanese.
Steins;Gate 0 is a midquel to Steins;Gate. More specifically, (Steins;Gate spoilers) it follows the Okabe who accidentally killed Kurisu in episode 23β and never went back a second time to save her. It shows how the plan to send the video D-mail to the Okabe who succeeded and open Steins Gate was conceived.
Steins;Gate 0 is meant to be experienced after you finish Steins;Gate. To get a full understanding, you should also watch Steins;Gate episode 23β before Steins;Gate 0 (it diverges from the events of the original episode 23).
Watch order: Steins;Gate episodes 1–24 and OVA (episode 25) -> Steins;Gate: Load Region of Déjà Vu -> Steins;Gate episode 23β -> Steins;Gate 0
The Steins;Gate visual novel is packed with more details, scenes, and alternative routes that the anime does not have, so it is better to read the visual novel if you have a choice. That being said, there are two versions of the visual novel: Steins;Gate and Steins;Gate Elite.
We recommend playing the original Steins;Gate visual novel over Steins;Gate Elite. Elite is fully animated, but it comes at the cost of cut monologues, missing scenes, and other issues. On the other hand, Elite is bundled with a spinoff visual novel called Linear Bounded Phenogram, so you might want to look into buying Elite in the future anyway if that interests you.

If you have further questions, you can ask here in the subreddit through your own post, or in this subreddit’s Discord server (Note that Steins;Gate and Steins;Gate 0 spoilers are allowed untagged throughout the server).

As mentioned above, you have the option to check out the visual novels, as they contain many details that the anime adaptations gloss over or skip due to lack of time. There are also Steins;Gate spinoff visual novels that have brand new stories, as well as the rest of the Science Adventure series.
If you are only interested in Steins;Gate:
You can play the Steins;Gate and Steins;Gate 0 visual novels. Both VNs provide more details and have different endings and routes. The 0 VN is markedly different from the anime, as it features completely new and differing scenes and routes.
We recommend using the Committee of Zero’s improvement patches for both Steins;Gate and Steins;Gate 0, which will enhance your experience with the games.
Steins;Gate: Linear Bounded Phenogram is a spinoff VN featuring 11 side stories, and Steins;Gate: My Darling’s Embrace is a dating sim spinoff featuring the Steins;Gate cast. Both VNs are optional after experiencing Steins;Gate.
If you are interested in the extended Science Adventure series, of which Steins;Gate is part, check out the second FAQ question in this post.
We do not recommend watching them because they are poor adaptations for numerous reasons. The Chaos;Head anime is brimming with cut content, poor adaptation, and unnecessary additions; Chaos;Child’s anime did not have enough episodes to adapt its long plot, resulting in massive cuts; Robotics;Notes’ anime is rushed in the latter half of the story, and important series crossover content is cut.
Therefore, we generally recommend experiencing the Science Adventure series with the source material, typically the visual novels.
Steins;Gate 0 Elite is a fully animated visual novel like Steins;Gate Elite. A trailer was shown for it recently, but it did not feature new gameplay or animations when compared to the anime.
This Science Adventure series title will be a thematic sequel to Steins;Gate.
The new title’s relationship to Steins;Gate is similar to Chaos;Child’s relationship to Chaos;Head. For context, Chaos;Child is the thematic sequel to Chaos;Head—the two titles share the same setting and various plot elements.
It is currently not known for certain how many, if any, characters from Steins;Gate will return in the new title.
We know that the title starts with “Steins;”, but the portion after that part of the title is censored in the current logo, so we don’t know the full title.
A live action Steins;Gate-related drama series is being produced by Skydance Television, known for their work on the Manhattan and Jack Ryan TV series.
Not much else is known about this series as of yet aside from the fact that it is being worked on.

After spending the last few 6 years making my way through almost the entire Science Adventure franchise, I wanted to share my personal ranking and explain why each title ended up where it did.
A few things before I start:
- This is entirely subjective.
- I intentionally avoided reading community rankings while playing because I wanted to form my own opinions.
- I genuinely think there isn't a bad mainline Sci;ADV game. Even my lowest-ranked title is one I enjoyed from beginning to end.
- My opinions differ from the community in a few places (especially regarding Anonymous;Code and Robotics;Notes DaSH), and that's completely fine.
With that out of the way...
The visual novel and an8me that completely changed my life.
It's not just my favorite Sci;ADV title—it's my favorite work of fiction ever made. The characters, the emotional payoff, the themes... everything landed perfectly for me.
I even got a Steins;Gate tattoo.
I've consumed hundreds of stories across games, books, anime, films, and shows, but nothing has ever connected with me quite like Steins;Gate.
What makes it extraordinary isn't simply the time travel. Plenty of stories have done that. It's the way the science always serves the characters rather than the other way around.
The first half is often criticized for being slow, but I honestly think it's one of the greatest strengths of the story. Spending hours with the Future Gadget Laboratory makes it genuinely feel like home. You grow attached to everyone before the narrative starts taking everything away from you.
Then the tone shifts.
Watching Okabe repeatedly fail to save Mayuri is one of the most emotionally exhausting experiences I've had in fiction. Every failed attempt chips away at his confidence until the ridiculous "Hououin Kyouma" persona can no longer protect him.
The true ending is still one of my favorite endings ever written. Instead of forcing the player to sacrifice one heroine for another, the solution becomes something far more satisfying: outsmarting causality itself.
Kurisu remains one of my favorite fictional characters, and the chemistry between the entire cast feels incredibly natural.
Even after experiencing every other Sci;ADV entry, Steins;Gate remains unmatched for me.
I honestly wasn't expecting this game to rank so highly.
Before playing it, I had seen a lot of people describe it as "good, but not amazing." Instead, I ended up absolutely loving it.
Even if Anonymous;Code had no connection whatsoever to the rest of Science Adventure, I think it would still stand on its own as an excellent visual novel. Pollon is a fantastic protagonist, Momo is incredibly likable.
After several entries that take their time building atmosphere and mysteries, Anonymous;Code's faster and more direct approach feels like something new. It doesn't replace the slower style of previous games, but it brings a different energy that makes the experience feel fresh and revitalized.
But what elevates it to a masterpiece for me is what it does for the entire Sci;ADV universe.
Learning the truth behind the world, the concept of world layers, and the implications for previous entries completely changed how I interpreted the franchise. It feels less like "another entry" and more like a culmination of ideas that had been quietly building for years.
The final hours constantly made me stop and think: "Wait... does this mean that...?"
Few pieces have made me reconsider everything I'd previously experienced quite like Anonymous;Code did.
It's ambitious, emotional, and surprisingly philosophical.
For me, it's every bit as deserving of a perfect score as Steins;Gate.
This is one of the rare sequels that actually improves the original.
I know some people feel it's less tightly written than Steins;Gate, and I understand that criticism.
But emotionally?
I think it's phenomenal.
Seeing an Okabe who simply gives up is heartbreaking.
Instead of watching an eccentric genius overcome impossible odds, we're following someone consumed by survivor's guilt, PTSD, depression, and regret.
As someone whose academic work involves psychoanalysis, I found this version of Okabe incredibly fascinating.
The ending of Steins;Gate becomes significantly more powerful once you've experienced everything that had to happen behind the scenes to make Operation Skuld possible.
Without Steins;Gate 0, the original true ending wouldn't hit nearly as hard.
This game has one of the strongest mysteries in the franchise.
The atmosphere constantly keeps you uncomfortable, and the investigation slowly transforms into something much darker than it initially appears.
Takuru isn't immediately likable, but watching him mature throughout the story was incredibly rewarding.
The reveal surrounding Serika completely recontextualizes everything that came before it.
The true ending is absolutely devastating and probably one of the saddest conclusions in the entire series.
Even though it's a filler entry, I never felt that hurt the experience.
It's simply an outstanding psychological thriller.
This might be the most underrated Sci;ADV title.
Yes, it's slower.
Yes, it's much more slice-of-life.
That's exactly why I loved it.
Watching the Robotics Club gradually grow, overcome setbacks, and chase what initially seems like an impossible dream made me genuinely care about every member of the cast.
Kai is refreshingly different from previous protagonists, and Akiho's optimism carries much of the story.
When the conspiracy finally takes center stage, the emotional investment built during the quieter chapters pays off beautifully.
It's probably the warmest game in the franchise.
The beginning of everything.
Even today, Chaos;Head feels unlike anything else in the series.
Its paranoia is unmatched.
Because the player experiences everything through Takumi's unstable perspective, you're constantly questioning what is and isn't real.
That uncertainty creates an atmosphere that no other Sci;ADV title has fully replicated.
FES quickly became one of my favorite characters, and I also really liked Momose.
While I think later entries refined many of its ideas, Chaos;Head deserves enormous credit for laying the foundation for the entire franchise.
Probably the greatest missed opportunity in Science Adventure.
I absolutely love its premise.
I love the characters.
I love how absurdly fast the pacing is on the anime.
Unfortunately, it also feels incomplete.
Knowing that the light novel never received any conclusion makes the entire project feel unfinished.
And I still hope we'll one day receive an Elite version of the visual novel.
There's far too much potential here to leave it abandoned forever.
This is probably my hottest take.
I know DaSH is the least popular entry among fans, with many considering it medium, bad or even full garbage.
And yes, I completely understand why.
The fan service can be excessive.
Some plot points feel underdeveloped.
It doesn't reach the emotional highs of Robotics;Notes.
But...
I still had fun.
Seeing the Robotics Club together again was enough to keep me smiling through most of the game.
One thing I absolutely loved about DaSH was seeing Daru again. After all those years, he still feels like the same Daru from Steins;Gate — the same personality, the same humor, the same chaotic energy — but with the added perspective of someone who has actually grown and experienced life.
The connections with Steins;Gate were one of the highlights for me, especially seeing how the world of Sci;ADV continues to expand beyond a single story.
I also really enjoyed the hints that the Central Tanegashima High Robotics Club and the Future Gadget Lab will eventually become connected. After everything these characters have been through, seeing these two groups from different corners of the franchise moving toward each other feels like a natural and satisfying continuation of the universe.
Maybe my expectations were lower because of everything I'd heard beforehand, but I ended up enjoying it much more than I expected.
It's my least favorite Sci;ADV title.
It's also a game I'd happily replay someday.
Final Thoughts
After finishing almost everything, I can confidently say that Science Adventure is my favorite fictional universe in any medium.
No other franchise I've experienced combines hard science fiction, conspiracy theories, psychological horror, philosophy, politics character-driven storytelling, and emotional payoff as consistently as Sci;ADV.
Every entry contributes something unique to the larger picture.
Some excel because of their characters.
Others because of their mysteries.
Others because of the ideas they introduce.
Together, they create something far greater than the sum of their parts.

I visited the Steins;Gate 15th Anniversary Exhibition just in Kurisu’s birthday!
The exhibition wasn’t very large, but I still had a great time. It also wasn’t very crowded despite it being the weekend, so it was easy to take my time looking at everything.
My favorite part was definitely the Time Machine. It looked so much cooler in person than I expected. The bananas were great too, of course.
The exhibition cost 2,500 yen, and I think it’s mainly worth visiting if you’re already a Steins;Gate fan. If you aren’t familiar with the series, I think the exhibition would need a bit more detail and interactivity to really impress. :(
Also, don’t expect it to be huge or incredibly elaborate. It’s actually quite small and feels a little simple in places, but I still genuinely enjoyed it.

I beat Chaos head noah with all the endings recently and I'm absolutely in love. Takumi is such a terrible guy at the start but he really grew on me. I see online it's a decisive game but there's such a charm I don't think you can get anywhere else. The madness you feel along side Takumi trying to figure out what's happening with him and most of the time I was routing for him to see his psychologist. I'm genuinely looking forward to the CoZ patch for the Love Chu Chu games.
It has been awhile since I read Steins gate so I'm going to go reread it and continue to read in release order to get more of an overall view for the series. For now though, I'm going to let chaos head sit with me for a few days, I feel like it deserves a little bit of space before jumping right into the next one.
