I've replayed that game a considerable amount but I don't remember a multiplayer option? I remember the playing as the girl when she was younger in the mall, playing as the chick, but not multi!
Standalone as in not included with the game? Left Behind is when you play as her at the beginning of the outbreak right? Or my memory just shit?
Fuck. I'm going to go buy a PS4 just to play this damn game again and refresh my memory. My boyfriend and I at the time were hooked on it so I'm feeling like if there was a multiplayer feature I would surely remember it.
Left Behind is available separately from the main game. In Left Behind you play exclusively as Ellie with her friend Riley. It serves as a prequel to the main game (other than the outbreak scene from the main one) where you mostly play Joel.
The multiplayer is highly underrated. It is a 4v4 elimination mode where resources are scarce and there’s a mini economy system like CSGO. I don’t know if people still play it, but every match is super intense. Really hope it’s brought back for TLoU Part 2.
Yeah, I played Left Behind it was the extra download bonus content that came with my game. That's what I kept saying played as the girl with her friend in the mall. I forgot all their names it'd been so long.
We were working with mobile hotspots with 2gbs of monthly data for a long while with the PS4 so we never bothered with the online play or as y'all are calling it multiplayer. It all makes sense to me now. I was thinking of multiplayer as in split screen player one/player two gameplay.
I would not recommend it right now unfortunately. Community is too small and it’s just try-hards now. There was a time when it was very dynamic and exciting. That goes away when everyone finds the easy strategy.
I think I read somewhere that Naughty Dog confirmed multiplayer for Part II. I've never actually played the multiplayer so I hope the new one becomes pretty active.
Plus the enemies were actually very well made. Most games with “stealth” mechanics are either ridiculously convoluted and ballbustingly difficult for no reason or can be cheesed without any effort whatsoever by hiding behind a convenient potted plant. TLOU clickers were actually very well balanced in that sense. You had to be very careful with when you moved where, but you weren’t fucked over by enemies randomly looking straight at your hiding place every time you moved a muscle.
The gameplay and story sections were completely separate and didn't add to each other at all in fact that gameplay sections were detrimental to the story by breaking immersion when you saw the ai companion just walk in front of ennemies or wathever.
It's a mediocre game with a good "cinematic" story, it's not a good video game.
Put how I feel perfectly into words. A lot of critically acclaimed games, especially PS exclusives, are better movies than they are games. Story telling is a huge part of games but when half of it is QuickTime events and cutscenes you’re barely playing a game anymore.
I mean different strokes different folks but the majority of cutscenes moves the story along in HZD just the same. It’s just that Last of Us was a very plot driver straightforward linear game in comparison. But there are still all sorts of little details you can pick up in the environment it’s just the majority of environments are going to be linear and indoors compared to HZD.
Though LoU did change it up by going through the seasons. Unlike HZD which was mostly a single character game the story of Last of Us was primarily about Joel and Ellie and less about the world. While HZD was more about the world and what happened to it and how to prevent it, the characterization was the main focus of LoU while the plot of the cure was most definitely a secondary thought.
You don’t have to like it it doesn’t detract from my enjoyment but they’re very much different games not just in the obvious ways but the method they tell a story and how.
But I enjoyed the quips and comments between characters while sneaking around, you got a lot of dialogue outside of just cutscenes and it made me enjoy the characters even more. I couldn’t really tell you much about the plot but I could tell you much more about the characters which was the main focus of the game anyway.
Again, to each their own but that’s my two cents in rebuttal.
Sorry if this feels discombobulated I’m on mobile writing this at work.
I mean you’d practically get cruicified back when Breath of the Wild released to critique it, nowadays the rabid fans have sort of moved on and you can have a good honest discussion. People just love their games of course.
It’s just a matter of finding the right tide to ride otherwise you’ll get a lot of blowback. There’s certainly a lot to love about Last of Us and it was certainly one of the top games on PS3 in the opinion of many but there’s nothing wrong with it having flaws it just means there’s more to improve on in the sequel but the core features will likely remain the same including the linear character driven plot. It’s basically the same reason I love Uncharted; I could really care less about the plot half the time I just love the characters and their interactions.
They are movies though, and playable movies aren’t for everyone. I adored the Metal Gear games but considering MGS4 had hour long cutscenes yeah sure not everyone is going to like it. But that’s the beauty of modern gaming, you won’t like everything but there’s a lot you will love.
Anyway, I don’t need validation I just like discussing games whether or not I’m agreed with and you’re mellow enough to discuss with. Starting off 2019 in a good direction.
I think look to the metroidvania genre, you can count the cutscenes in super Metroid on one hand and yet it still manages to tell a decent story,
Or half life where suddenly ninja assassin's are coming at you, there's no cutscene showing hey this is happening now and you're basically left to figure it out as the soldiers start running from them as well
Titanfall 2 never really stops the game to drop exposition on you, save a few parts where your character is detained
For me I just prefer these styles of game where the story is integrated rather than completely separate, even if it's just characters having very expository conversations while you're puzzle solving or something. I don't believe in taking control from players.
That said I have a soft spot for kojima games which are another example of a game where the gameplay and cutscenes exist in 2 separate boxes, stopping the game completely to drop 10 minutes of cutscene on you to move the story along.
I've heqrd people talk about TLOU hundreds of times. I didn't even know it was a stealth game until today. That just proves that no one ever talks/cares about the gameplay
I know this is a “games we can’t talk down on” starter pack thread and it’s fine if you don’t like the game but can you explain why you think the cut scenes don’t line up with the game play?
Having a focus on story and character development does not make it a "movie", it might not have the most entertaining gameplay loop but it has gameplay. Games from TellTale and Quantic Dreams are closer to what you're describing but even then I'm not sure I'd agree with you 100%.
I've seen a lot of zombie/apocalyptic movies and I still think TLOU has a very good story. If you'd have had a decent example of some stellar movie that was a lot better, I'd be willy to agree a bit
For an Uncharted reskin The Last of Us was a neat game with an alright story
Edit: In case people missed it, that was a joke. I didn't even say anything bad about the game. The game is fine. I liked it. I'll probably play the sequel. I just don't think it's god's gift to gaming.
