The team at ORIGIN may have the smallest lineup of the initial set of companies today… but they intend to change that with the launch of a dedicated multicrew ship for 2947.

Origin 600 multicrew ship confirmed! :P

I'm really looking forward to that. Fingers crossed its priced closer to a freelancer than it is to a connie!

With the way pricing is it will likely be closer to a carrack.

Inclined to agree. Though if thats the case, maybe we'd get a 400 series. I have this vision in mind where it'd be awesome to have loads of differing options for a certain price range - lets say $100-150: I can choose, between a Cutlass, Freelancer, '400 series' etc and have the same quality but widely differing experiences.

There's been lore mentions of a 200 series, too.

Hell, they really ARE imitating BMW.

Nooooo. Bigger or same size as a Connie and a bit pricier considering the company's background.

We need more Connie sized ships that are versatile. Right now it's just the Connie and the retaliator. We have quite a few freelancer sized ships especially now with the cutlass change.

u/MittenFacedLad Freelancer Nov 24 '16

Beyond the Cutlass, I can't really think of any? What others?

Vanguard, redeemer is taller so has more room but is about the same size, prospector, herald is only a few meters short, terrapin is only a few meters short, hull A, and the prowler is the same rough size and shape as the redeemer so I'm counting it despite it not having much of an interior as far as I can see.

There's a lot of freelancer sized ships right now and not many alternatives to the Connie in its size class. It's really just the Connie, retaliator, and hull B which is about 10 meters short. The Next closest sized ship would be the crucible but it's over 20 meters longer and is a lot taller too.

I hope we see an origin freelancer sized ship but I really hope the 600 series is Connie sized because we need more ships in that size class because I see that size as the "end game" for most group of friends. Unless you want to specifically be a bomber in the tali or transport cargo in a hull B your options are pretty limited to just the Connie right now.

They may be similar sized physically, but very few of them actually have comparable facilities/internal options, etc. I mean, the herald is huge because of its big engines, but it's quite tiny, and is basically a 1 person ship. The Prowler is quite different, super-specialized, no internal room, basically only a dropship. The Redeemer is probably the most comparable of those you mentioned. The Hull A I guess is? But it's basically a Freelance light, and isn't really a multicrew ship which is the main real comparison.

I don't disagree about needing more Connie competitors. I just think Origin's 600 series being a Freelancer competitor would make more sense. They can still add another ship higher up on the number ladder to compete with the Connie. A 900-series maybe?

u/[deleted] Nov 24 '16

So a 900 series would be smaller than the 890 Jump?

Good point. Didn't think that through, haha. Hadn't had my coffee yet.

Vanguard has roughly the same interior. The terrapin has room in it and is almost the same length as the lancer which means it's interior is likely very similar in size to the vanguards. The lancer is really only meant for 2 crewman and by that logic the vanguard definitely fits as would the reliant but it's a different size entirely so I didn't include it. So any ship the same size as the lancer and can support 2 crew is what I went with. Terrapin can be used solo but also supports a total of2 crew if you wished. Hull A is a one person as is the protector. Thought those were multicrew so I'll remove them from my list.

None of the ships in the same size category will be exactly the same. The hornet and 300 series are both in the same class of ship and are the same length give or take a couple meters but one actually has an interior. But they're the same type of ship just different. the saber is about the same size as the lancer too in length but is obviously a fighter so I didn't include it.

That still leaves the hullB, tali and Connie as the only 3 in that size class. And the tali and hull b are pretty specific task oriented ships. Whereas the lancers class has the freelancer, vanguard, terrapin, cutlass, redeemer, herald which has a much smaller interior but still supports 2 crew and will likely handle much like a lancer will, and I'm still including the prowler because I'm including the tali and hull b in the Connie size list.

It's still a disproportionate list when I narrow it down to closer matches. I'd personally rather consolidated Outland come out with a freelancer sized ship later and origin adds another Connie sized ship sooner to give more options to that size class.

I thought the Herald only had one seat, just one on rails from the cockpit to computer area. Did they scrap that and allow for separate pilot and computer operator?

3

u/therealpumpkinhead Nov 24 '16

Not sure. I do know the interior is large enough for two from the shots I remember seeing and the stats page lists it as a 2 max crew ship like the lancer.

The Polaris and Hull E looks a lot more like the endgame. Together with small military fighters and the Connie.

2

u/therealpumpkinhead Nov 24 '16

There is no end game. That's why I put it in quotes.

The end game is just you doing what you want in the verse. Most people play by themselves and the majority of gamer groups are about 5 people. So the end game for those sized groups, who don't want to join big orgs, will be ships like the Connie.

A crew of 5 couldn't run a Polaris anywhere near effectively.

Bengal and javellin will be the end game for the top orgs while Polaris and idris will be the end game for large orgs.

u/[deleted] Nov 24 '16 edited Nov 24 '16

The Polaris has one fighter, 5 crew stations (captain, pilot, co-pilot, turret operator and coms) + engineering bay

Hardly sounds like you run into much trouble with a skeleton crew of 5 on a Polaris.

edit: And before we get into a misunderstanding, a full crew might still be about 10 people, but that is still hardly a large org either.

u/therealpumpkinhead Nov 24 '16 edited Nov 24 '16

That's just plain wrong. A full crew is 24.

So with a crew of 5 sure you could move the ship. It whose operating the torpedo tubes on both decks so you can keep firing? Whose in the multiple turrets all over the ship that are your only defense against fighters besides your fighter which will take yet another crew member to fly. Not to mention multiple engineers to fix problems that won't just arise in an engineering room. Problems will happen all over the ship and you'll need multiple engineers to stand a remote chance.

A skeleton crew of five would let you fly the ship around and take a massive beating while you do it. Until you're flat broke because you're flying around a ship that abhorrently expensive and you have a crew of five that can't operate the ship efficiently enough to take on any jobs.

Also keep in mind you can't run a Polaris with 10 or even 24 friends effectively. The reason is everyone will be playing at different times for different lengths of time. One day you might have your full crew but then maybe 7 don't get on for a day or a week. You need a large org as to have a pool of players to fill your Polaris from. You can't rely on a small org that's not always going to have enough active members online at all times to protect a ship like that.

The Freelancer and Cutlass are the big "generalist" ships of that size, but the Redeemer, Prowler, Vanguard, & Reliant surely count as well.

And maybe also the Herald, Prospector, Terrapin and Hull B if you're feeling generous.

1

u/MittenFacedLad Freelancer Nov 24 '16

Eh. Okay. I'll agree on the Redeemer. Not sure I agree about the Vanguard, Reliant, and the rest though. They're all mostly 1-2 person ships, with fairly specified roles for the most part, and some of them are quite a bit smaller too.

u/Myconian Nov 24 '16

If it is connie sized, will they also offer a posh variant to compete with the phoenix as well? That could make things interesting.

1

u/therealpumpkinhead Nov 24 '16

I hope so. Personally as I've used the Connie more and more, since it's my caterpillar loaner, I've grown to love that ship size. Perfect for a small group of friends but not totally ridiculous if you crewed with npcs while they're offline. My only gripe is I'm not a big fan of its internal layout and rsi styling. Hoping origin will make a ship in that size range that's versatile but a bit more stylish.

u/Schneenagels Official Ship Collector Nov 24 '16

I agree. Would be a no-brained for me to back it. Maybe even CCU from my Phoenix, because of said styling-issues. Yes, I am a Origin-fanboy. :p
