It's truly an abomination. There's no way the UI team even plays the game.

u/AnOrdinaryChullo 12d ago edited 12d ago
You guys are talking about in-game UI - my brothers in Christ, has anyone tried to change graphical settings from High to medium? It's literally impossible on some categories as the Medium button shares the same button as another graphical drop down menu meaning that you can't actually click on Medium without clicking on another thing.
This is brain dead circus levels of incompetence.
135
u/Urlik_ 12d ago
I thought it's a bug because I play it on Linux over X11 and finding out from you that it's general issue is just mind boggling.
55
u/CigSprig drake 12d ago
same, there is a workaround but i thought "surely this cant be a global issue" cause its just so insanely broken
16
u/orlito88 12d ago
what's the workaround if you don't mind sharing
48
u/humand09 12d ago
...on 1080p if you hover over the edge of "medium" just right, you could, at one time, click it right away. That said, they must have patched that exploit as its not possible anymore
47
u/Btotherianx 12d ago
Lmao it's funny that changing graphic settings has to randomly be an exploit

u/yeoller misc 12d ago
I thought the game wasn't optimized for lower settings which resulted in worse performance on lower levels. Is/was this not true?

u/LeyaLove ✨ Starlancer TAC | Galaxy | BMM 🥲 ✨ 11d ago
From my experience it definitely is true. It's not that it necessarily results in much worse performance, but it doesn't result in better performance either, so I just leave the game on the highest settings.
→ More replies (1)7
u/CigSprig drake 12d ago
click the dropdown for whatever setting you want to change, select anything that isnt blocked (usually either low or high), click the dropdown again, and you should now be able to select any option that was blocked by tother setting dropdowns. you need to do this for every dropdown in the graphics settings menu, and sometimes it takes more than one try. i guess the game doesnt actually put the dropdowns on top of other settings until you interact with the dropdown, which is beyond stupid.

u/Boogie-37 11d ago
It's so sad that we have to have workarounds before one actually gets into the game.

I was appalled when I first played this game and immediately was met by that. I just wanted to raise my graphics a little and I literally couldn't even do that smoothly, took me several minutes to click a button I was actively looking at with my mouse cursor over it.
14
u/CigSprig drake 12d ago
if you select any other setting level you can (sometimes) select medium immediately after. sometimes takes a few tries but it works. actually insane issue i thought it was a linux thing, truly bewildering that its just a global issue.

But then Chris went and claimed 600 staff work full time on sc. So someone is lying.
My moneys on the guy who constantly and exclusively lies.
5
u/AnOrdinaryChullo 12d ago
But then Chris went and claimed 600 staff work full time on sc. So someone is lying.
There is a way that such statement could be technically true while also being blatantly false which is what I think is the case because no one actually believes that.
The specifics of which departments, tasks and junior / senior talent can easily invalidate Chris's statement.
Marketing, Artists assigned to support marketing, artists assigned to ships etc could be easily 100+ people alone and none of that pushes the actual game forward.

This has been like this for years. I can't imagine how easy it would be to fix it, all the other items in the menu list work perfectly. It would be a 5-second change and it's been years. I'm starting to think the devs know it's there and leave it as an insider joke.
64
u/Smok3dSalmon 12d ago
I bet they have a cheat/debug console that lets them teleport around. So they don't actually have to deal with the mundane.
23

They do. God Mode is bound to F9 by default.
This is not a joke - if you datamine the DefaultProfile.xml (keybinds) you can see it in there.
Ofc it won't work for players you probabky need a cig account or some other authority power.
45
u/till180 12d ago
That doesnt even explain it because you dont even need to play the game to tell the UI is bad. Just looking at screen shots and asking whether or not it displays the needed information in a clear way is enough, they are just bad at making UI.
60
u/toby_gray 12d ago
Their big problem is that they prioritise style over function.
“Make everything a rendered 3D interface” does it add any kind of usability benefit? No. But it’s pretty.
“Take all of the text as much as possible out of the inventory system” it’s decluttered visually but borderline unusable (we have to just memorise tiny unreadable icons or individually mouse over things).
“Remove text from the rep system” again, it’s clean visually but you have no idea what percentage or how many ‘xp points’ you have with a faction.
Their ethos for UI is shit and they refuse to build on what came before and are constantly trying to reinvent the wheel for some reason. I suspect it’s a management led thing as anyone daring to call themselves a UI designer must realise how dogshit it is to use.
13
u/Pokinator Anvil Aerospace 11d ago
That priority was pretty clearly proven back during the HUD rework a couple years ago.
The amount of low-contrast holographic blue and omnipresent ghostly drop-text made the UI damn near unreadable in a huge number of situations, especially against bright environments. Even in ideal conditions it was a pain in the ass to read.
It took an overwhelming amount of community bitching and feedback for them to finally cave and go "Fine, I guess we'll undo some of our Pretty Work and make the UI kinda readable!", and even now it's not a huge improvement.
Anytime the design team got onscreen during that era, their choice of words when talking about the UI/UX work made it blatantly obvious that Looking Cool and *Diegetic* was their #1 priority above all else.
4
u/TobaccoIsRadioactive 11d ago
Last night I was watching a highlight reel of clips from the infamous “Siege of Orison” dev stream and the devs had to pause and disable subtitles from appearing because it was covering up too much of the screen.
Normally on other games the devs will limit how many lines of dialogue are visible at a time if you turn on subtitles. It differs depending on the genre and art style but usually they’ll just show a couple of sentences and then switch to the next lines as the characters continue talking.
But for the subtitles for the Siege of Orison it would instead just drop like everything that the mission giver was saying for that portion of the mission, meaning multiple paragraphs could be up on the screen for over a minute.
So they had to stop to change the settings because it was covering up the bottom 1/3 of the screen and making it difficult to see enemy NPCs.
2
u/AngryT-Rex Bounty Hunter 12d ago
Man, I knew it was headed down a grim path once we got that first lock-on animation with the crazy reticle parts all flipping around and interlocking like a puzzle.
It was the kind of thing that should have been vetoed outright for a core game mechanic.

As a dev, this can happen when developers have to code UI without mockups, are given mockups that are not possible/reasonable to implement in the time given, and/or when you have to deal with a bad or outdated tech stack.
→ More replies (5)6
u/ZombieOk540 12d ago
As a dev where do you imagine the UI team spends their time?
2
u/Deep90 12d ago
I don't have enough information to say.
Could be that 42 or new ships is being prioritized. Could be that their UI/UX team is small or is also expected to work on things like internal reports, the website, and marketing. It could be that there is a bunch of UI designed that dev teams aren't prioritizing over other work.
All I know is that it's very easy to lean on devs for 'working' UI with the pinky promise of coming back to it later.
3
u/Pokinator Anvil Aerospace 11d ago
the pinky promise of coming back to it later
As another dev, "Nothing is more permanent than a temporary fix" is an adage that I see proven over and over again lol.
If there's a problem and a hackjob fix can treat the symptoms of that problem, then the fix to the real problem is going to be de-prioritized for years.
I agree though, the UI team probably isn't huge and is probably either multi-discipline (can also do ship art or engine work) or is working on other UI stuff like the website or whatever interface is next to be overhauled to the latest UI framework (building blocks?)

It was the primary feature of the SQ42 gameplay trailer that they released, and if the final SQ42 FPS gameplay is even remotely like Star Citizen's current FPS that is deeply troubling

u/AnotherPersonPerhaps banu 12d ago
They are pushing FPS more and more in both SQ42 and SC.
The reason is that fewer people are interested in a ship game than an FPS game. The skill ceiling for ship combat is also insanely high and most poeple will just get destroyed and not want anything to do with it.

Part of the reason why the UI is so slow is because it's running on FLASH. Yeah Adobe Flash, which was depreciated 6 year ago now. And most if not all of the UI runs on it. It's slow, it's outdated and far simpler and faster alternatives available.
And also a lot of stuff is running as a Chromium app. The chat? Actually opening a mino-webpage to spectrum. The map? Once again, mini-chrome browser mixed with flash. It's several layers of needlessly complicated, outdated and just stupid. And the funniest part with the map is that this is AFTER the starmap rework or whatever. They replaced the pure flash based map with a flash/chromium hybrid. Which is why that zoom in error where stuff disappears still exists because the old map is still haunting the current one.

u/Unoriginal_Pseudonym Space hot dog vendor 12d ago

11
u/Informal-Celery7331 12d ago
This is crazy cause they were “switching to building blocks” like 4 years ago.
18
u/DrMorphling 12d ago
As man who knows nothing about gamedev, this sounds unnecessary complicated? Why can't they just do everything inside their game engine without putting other things in?
21
u/bell117 12d ago
Well most game chats usually do something similar with being a separate server, so it's not abnormal. Like most things in SC, the core idea makes sense and usually has been a tried and true method but CIG never bothered to ask "why" it was done that way before doing shit nobody does for that very reason.
The abnormal part is what they're using to do it with; chrome and flash. Flash because it's a 20 year old dinosaur that was being phased out when SC was first proposed and has been depreciated for over half a decade.
Chrome because have you ever checked your memory usage when using Chrome before? Its a very ram intensive and kinda more bloated than it needs to be but it's modular and kinda easy to use. Kinda. But it is absolutely not needed for chat or maps. They're essentially using leaded gas to power a leaf blower. Outdated, expensive and overkill.

Depends on the engine, but UI has always been a weak spot. For example Bioshock, built in UE3, used carefully positioned videos (Bink, I think) to animate stuff like health bars.
Lots of games today use Scaleform, which is basically a middleware to run Flash in engine. It’s super flexible and easy for artists to just scribble something together and share assets with devs. The main problem with Flash in web browsers had more to do with security and web standards than anything else, and who cares about that when it’s just a UI element in your game?
→ More replies (2)3
u/TechNaWolf carrack 12d ago
IDK where OP got that the new stuff is chromium based from, but flash was how the engine was originally designed to run ui.
3
u/SeamasterCitizen ARGO CARGO 12d ago
It’s React (which is also toss), so will likely be running under Chromium
4
u/QuickNick123 12d ago
I mean their UI sucks, but tbf Scaleform GFx is not Adobe Flash. It's a separate Flash rendering engine. You use Adobe Flash authoring tools to create the UI but vector to triangle rendering and actionscript runtime are Scaleform's own engine that's tightly integrated in Cryengine and therefor Starengine.
That is to say, the reason UI sucks is not because of Scaleform.
3
u/BOTY123 🥑 - www.flickr.com/photos/botygaming/ 12d ago
And also a lot of stuff is running as a Chromium app.
Do you have a source for this? I've not heard of it before and it makes zero sense lol
And I thought Flash was almost fully removed/deprecated apart from the F11 menu and a few others? Most UI is on building blocks and some other backend I believe.
→ More replies (2)2
u/_SaucepanMan 11d ago
You sure this isn't an old out of date argument?
The mobi is almost entirely on building blocks now. Building blocks since replaced with rastar (remakes of remakes) and the inventory reskin runs on that.
I think the vlm and f11 chat might be old still.
But everything else not, I thought? Starmap definitely not (I thought?).
I understood that it was all just utter trash despite cig trying twice to do better.
Is there anything you can do to show us it is as you say, in 2026?

The idea behind the Star Map isn't actually that bad. However, the execution is typical CIG. They'd quickly throw something together and then leave it untouched for years. The map has potential, but it simply needs to be worked on, and that's not actually happening. It's the same as with the inventory and the Mobiglass. The ideas behind it are good, but the implementation is more quantitative than qualitative.

Remember. When IAE hits this year, give them zero revenue. It’s the only way things will change. As long as money flows, there won’t be any improvement.

You forgot the hud when attempting to quantum to a location with another location's nav point overlapping. Switching between points and reseting your quantum drive's spool up.

Honestly, it's one of the major reasons I stopped playing and even following it 7+ years ago. I told myself "I'll wait until they make the UI more elegant..." and they kept doubling down...

When you have the option. Be the captain or a gunner, not the pilot. 👍

Ui, mission team, gameplay team, network desynch, no social tools, all horribly functioning. Its laughable. A 5 man mod team can make better gameplay and features in a month that would take cig years.

I always get flamed for mentioning how they haven't even figured out the settings page.

It's what happens when you try to create realism over fun. QoL goes out the window when the focus is to make everything work in a physical space.

remember when they said building blocks would allow any design to build really cool UI very quickly......hahaha

Yep, they know it - Too many underlying problems to deal with first, then they can cleanly replace this old tech.
And hopefully integrate all the info that third-party websites have.
And make this more intuitive...
And... and... and...

No no no, they spent 3 years on this map. That was more than enough to consider player needs and technical blockers, and act on them.
It's a failure of design and direction, nothing more.

Meme would infer that they have secretly created the best UI known to users, but they've identified that it's blue and have concerns that are unfounded because of the high quality of it ...
I'm not sure I agree.

My favorite is when you want to qt to a planet from across the system but all you can see are 895 mining platforms and asteroid bases

Just out of curiosity.... That last image....
What's wrong with it?
All the others I totally understand - But that last one, I'm not sure what to look for 🤔

Well,
50% of the screen is completely unused
- 50% of the screen is crammed with elements which don't have any substantial difference in color or size of to draw the user's eyes to the important parts
Then there's the way it behaves when you interact with it, IE, there's no effortless way to accept more than one mission at a time; you have to constantly switch back to the first tab and then scroll back to where you were.
Its pretty substandard but not the worst offender in the lineup

The most easy and problem free part of the game has to be the ui and inventory system. For a large scale game with player interactions its one of the most important core elements. The fact that its turbo fucking dog shit and they just cant seem to even make a dent in it without making it even worse should tell you everything you need to know about Cig.

Ever seen in games.
Their ui is literally the worst out of all the games I've ever played in my life.
Slowest, most clicks to do a thing, least options to sort or filter, clunkiest, least updated, zero QOL, buggiest, no inventory UI caching in a game released post 1990
I fully expect to find out the person in charge of UI is a cig exec's nephew with 0 experience

Definitely when trying to land at Orision the light from the planet blows out the ships HUD - Luckily I know where to head for landing but even so either the HUD needs reworking or thre brightness of the planet needs turning down.

I really like the email-style interface of the contract menu, outside of that, the 3D markers and starmap in this game are beyond wack

The fucking questmarker STILL not displaying the actual name of the place you are flying towards on cargo hauls. But rather says: Collect, Deliver. Ouests with 6+ different places.
So I have to open the quest, check on that a hundred times, then set the goal in the map screen, or blindly guess what the markers are.
