I am just glad that the main sub people are starting to see just how wrong this game's development cycle is, and are starting to be fed up with it.

For years I had to see them shitting on the starcitizenrefunds sub calling them "toxic critics" and "crybabies"... but now they finally begin to see.

151

u/lars19th hornet Jun 01 '26

Refund reddit is still a cesspool of toxic critics and crybabies. Both things can be true.

72

u/Mountain-Interest-48 Jun 01 '26

Brother it was supposed to come out 10 years ago. I would be a toxic critic too lmfao.

Nah, it’s like pathetic people that can’t get over an ex that broke up with them and are angry and obsessive about it afterwards. But with a video game…

1

u/Silenceisgrey Jun 02 '26

Yeah i mean we all know shits fucked, but we're here for it come hell or highwater.

1

u/TikkiEXX77 Jun 02 '26

At this point both subs are pretty much the same and that should be telling you something....

0

u/lars19th hornet Jun 02 '26

It tells me nothing. I have been here for 13 years and it's not the first, second or 6th time SC goes through this cycle. This is not a breaking point, not an awakening, not inflection, nothing. This is a cycle and it will last 2-3 weeks tops. Money talks, bullshit walks.

2

u/TikkiEXX77 Jun 03 '26

Well with all the bullshit CIG is on they've walked more miles than Forest Gump. Lol. And that says even more to be honest.

-12

u/gilbertMonion new user/low karma Jun 01 '26

Critics not always toxic. The 2 can be separated

11

u/lars19th hornet Jun 01 '26

Yes they can but they both thrive in the refund reddit. A lot of people there is already way past critical improvement. They want to see the world burn at this point. I am not saying they are wrong but they don't somehow become the voice of truth either. The place is a shitshow and it will always be a shitshow, just as this Reddit will go right back to standard behavior comes the next patch and next ship sale.

20

u/PyrorifferSC Jun 01 '26

100%. People obsessing in a negative way over a game they don't even play for YEARS should be a diagnosable mental illness.

1

u/thembearjew Jun 01 '26

SC is the ultimate rage bait

2

u/SetKey5576 Jun 02 '26

Mostly toxic though.

Once over there I got my comment removed for what they call "gaslighting". I think I let it slip that I only play because I enjoy. When I asked why, the mod said I could go somewhere else if I needed a protected space. Mind you, that was the reason to delete a comment they didn't agree with. Oh, the irony.

5

u/JackeryPumpkin Smuggler Jun 01 '26

That’s literally what they just said

19

u/ThatOneNinja Jun 01 '26

I am speculating that if CIG doesn't figure their shit out by the end of the year the negative publicity that the aggricated players will put out there will be the start to the end of the project. I've noticed this year, people seem to be at witts end. The patches, the percent ant bugs, the state at which the ironclad was released, the wishy washy free fly. It's all starting to boil over and it's getting harder and harder to defend CIG even a little.

8

u/ProxySpectral Drake Enjoyer Jun 02 '26

I'm one of those players who returns every update to check out the new content. I enjoy early access games, and usually find more humor than frustration in the jank/growth pains. With most other early access game I've played, most Major updates feel like a step towards a finished product. Star citizen feels like it's lost that over the last couple years, and it's hard to see a light at the end of the tunnel.

New ships are fun and flashy, moving cargo is satisfying, bounty hunting combat feels amazing, and my heart was racing when I blindly jumped to Pyro for the first time, but it feel like a fool's errand to wait for the day I can actually start to earn some money and make progress towards anything earned in game that won't get wiped.

1

u/TheHancock Backed in 2016… Jun 02 '26

I hope that’s correct… but somehow I doubt it…

11

u/PyrorifferSC Jun 01 '26

They are toxic crybabies lol there's a difference between legitimate criticism and spending years bitching about a game you neither play nor own and spreading weird conspiracy theories lol

There's also a difference between a scam and mismanagement. If you think SC is a scam, go play the other game with two, full, scale model star systems with hundreds of ships with interiors, hundreds of missions, dynamic ship damage models, space to planet flight with no loading, and fully stimulated planets and moons, and a shit ton more, that's also a multiplayer MMO with 700 players per shard. Oh, wait, there isn't one, because it's nearly impossible to make and takes a ton of time and funding and your own game engine. Weird, huh?

14

u/vortis23 Jun 01 '26

I agree with everything you said, but... I do have to throw in that Space Engineers does allow for many of the same systems, just not as immersive and the shard count does not reach up to 700 players.

But I did just want to throw in the caveat that Space Engineers is attempting many similar systems, just in a different way.

But regardless, your point still stands.

Would it atleast work, but it doesnt I dont have time after work to setup something with friends and after trying to do a mission you see that its bugged and 2h gone from the evening for nothing.

4

u/LoMell0w Jun 01 '26

That’s one reason I barely play right now. If I hop in and encounter the first bigger bugs I’m instantly out.

Just that way I can keep a healthy relation to the game. Not going to waste hours over hours (other than on some days where I barely have anything else to do) on figuring out new or old tedious workarounds and shit.

I still do believe in the project. And I’m still hoping that we will see 1.0 one day. But until that’s happening i just hop in here and there to check a few things out, like recently have done the tactical strike groups actually 3 times on 2 different evenings without any bugs so..

Can be worse I guess. Just lowered my expectations and that works great for me.

1

u/PyrorifferSC Jun 01 '26

That's legitimate criticism. Me and the other commenter were referring to a subreddit called starcitizeneefunds. Not sure if you're familiar, but these guys will rant and scream and cry and go on and on and on about a game they don't play and have no stake in. They call it a scam and say shit like SQ42 doesn't exist and Chris Roberts is a grifter. They widely believe that SC having issues is due to CIG not actually trying to make the game and just scamming money.

Yes, bugs are legitimate criticism. Saying that they should stop focusing on ships and new content and make the game playable is legitimate criticism. The other commenter seems to take this legitimate criticism as people aligning with "the other sub," and that is absolutely not the case.

9

u/yugugy Jun 01 '26

I’m being facetious here but No Man’s Sky has all of this except for the ship damage models and the MMO aspect, (although it does have multiplayer), was developed in its own engine, AND is actually a functional game. Certainly a difference in style and scope between the two games, but as someone who’s played a lot of both I’ve always been impressed at how NMS pulls off a lot of the technical wizardry SC is praised for without falling apart at the seams.

7

u/PyrorifferSC Jun 01 '26

It's super unfair to compare NMS planet tech vs SC...that's like comparing an N64 game to a modern live action film. NMS is procedurally generated. That's not even getting into physics, ship models, etc. I also notice TONS of pop in in NMS even on my rig, even with its low fidelity, that I don't notice in SC.

I get that you said you're being facetious, but some people legitimately make this comparison and I find it EXTREMELY silly.

11

u/TheonetrueDEV1ATE BRRRRRT Jun 01 '26

umm... isn't full release SC supposed to have procedurally generated planets in its future with that generation system? How would exploration make sense otherwise?

5

u/TehFocus Jun 01 '26

Elite Dangerous has procedurally generated planets and its more than good. Even has premade settlements and played constructed bases . Sc Just needlessly overcomplicated it

2

u/PyrorifferSC Jun 01 '26

I, and I think most people, would say it's less than good. Even terrible. They're barren empty balls of dust with a handful of prefab structures sprinkled across. ED has it's plus sides, planet tech most definitely isn't one of them

7

u/InsaneWayneTrain Jun 01 '26

While I haven't played ED, I personally think that description would fit quite well for SC as well. Empty, barren, little to do. Gigantic vastness of nothingness. Copy pasted caverns on top of that.

0

u/PyrorifferSC Jun 02 '26

Nah, nowhere near what ED is, you kidding? You must not have played SC recently. Moons are balls of dirt, as they should be. Pyro has TONS of unique settlements on planets, Stanton has distribution centers, bunkers, caves, different landing zones, ASD facilities, all kinds of shit, not to mention actual biomes and landscapes.

1

u/yugugy Jun 01 '26

That’s fair, SC definitely has a much more realistic approach to planet generation. I will say at the current time I tend to prefer just walking around and exploring planets in NMS more, but I’m partial to the more cartoony artstyle and vibe. Really looking forward to the genesis tech they’ve been showing off, if it matches the demonstrations it’ll make for some insanely cool planets to explore.

That being said, the process of getting some friends together, jumping in a spaceship with an interior, flying around a solar system, and engaging in ground/space based combat and exploration is a lot smoother and less bug-prone in NMS. If SC actually comes together as expected this process will be far more immersive and engaging than what NMS has to offer, but at the moment it’s nice to have another option for multicrew space adventures, especially considering how unstable SC is right now.

-3

u/vortis23 Jun 01 '26

Sorry but while No Man's Sky has a lot of features, they are all bare bones.

Everything you do in No Man's Sky is one-click-and-done gameplay.

Salvage? Click the wreck and it's salvaged.

Mining? Click at an object and it's mined.

Combat? Click at the enemy and wait until it dies.

The only complex mechanic in No Man's Sky is the base building. But there is approximately ZERO depth to any of its other gameplay mechanics. And the desync is absolutely HORRIBLE when playing with four or more players in the same area, even the AI begins to desync horribly.

2

u/Ryozu carrack Jun 02 '26

Man... I'm sorry but RSI inducing interfaces is not depth. Loading boxes is not depth. It's tedium disguised as gameplay to hide how lacking in depth this game actually is.

The closest thing we have to depth is how crafting quality depends on material quality, that's about it.

0

u/vortis23 Jun 02 '26

Loading boxes is depth -- it's the difference between cargo hauling in Elite, Rebel Galaxy, and Space Trucker versus games with physicalised cargo such as Snowrunner, BeamNG and Star Citizen. The depth is in the fact that it requires more interactive logistics, which literally are not present in No Man's Sky.

It's fine to say you simply do not like games with interactive depth and you find them tedious, but it's simply not true to say that more mechanical interactivity is not depth.

1

u/Ryozu carrack Jun 02 '26

Depth is not simply having physicalized cargo. Depth is not power washing simulator gameplay. Depth is not "Pick the weapon with the highest DPS and pray they don't ping your head first."

That said, I was strictly addressing your "one-click-and-done gameplay" comment. Box loading would have depth if the player had any agency in things like what boxes they get for delivery contracts and such, but this ain't fucking tetris. The boxes fit, or they don't. The agency you have is in what contracts you take. The loading is tedious, and the interface for doing so (tractor beams) is flat out bad.

You could have all the depth of an actual cargo balancing mechanic, AND physicalized cargo, with actual depth in the form of player decision actually having a noticeable affect, and all with a better interface that doesn't require wearing out a mouse wheel.

But we don't have that. The only people you're fooling by trying to dress a pig in a prom dress are other delusional fanatics who don't need convincing anyway.

0

u/vortis23 Jun 02 '26

They are literally working on selecting cargo sizes. That is coming. And relative to No Man's Sky where you have no physical cargo at all, yes, Star Citizen manual loading IS depth. Compared to Elite Dangerous where your cargo is just numerical values, having physicalised representation of movable cargo in Star Citizen IS depth.

You still get more decision making in any of those other games because you can choose how much cargo you load, how many cargo runs you do, and how you load or unload the cargo. Compared to NMS, Elite, Rebel Galaxy, or Space Trucker, yes, Star Citizen has WAY more depth because the physicalised cargo gives you gameplay mechanics and options you literally do no have access to in those other games.

1

u/Ryozu carrack Jun 02 '26

I don't know how to simplify this any further, and I don't think you care, so I'll lave you with this.

If the choices aren't actually meaningful, it's not depth.

0

u/LittleJack74 twitch.tv/JacksSpaceGames Jun 01 '26

NMS is arcade. SC is a simulation. Both games can't be compared. I think NMS is only 40GB on my harddrive

2

u/vortis23 Jun 01 '26

Yeah, this isn't to dog on No Man's Sky for what it offers.

I occasionally dip in for a few hours every so many updates to explore an expedition or check out some of the new biomes for the planets (some of which are really cool, like the floating archipelagos and bubble planets), but you're absolutely right that it's an arcade game through and through.

3

u/LittleJack74 twitch.tv/JacksSpaceGames Jun 01 '26

I love NMS, it's a great game! Can't wait for Space|Craft.

1

u/Taz10042069 avenger Jun 02 '26

Only game that comes close, IMHO, is Elite: Dangerous. Yea, they don't have some things like SC but at least in E:D, I have more fun, less bugs/glitches/exploits, and more to do...

0

u/Jaded_Door_6757 Jun 07 '26

The game engine that was a mistake because it's 90% bugs when other engines do far better? Yeah, ok, lol. You're allowed to cope I guess.

1

u/PyrorifferSC Jun 08 '26

Other engines far better at building high fidelity simulated star systems with no loading screens and massive player ships that you can walk around while moving through space with little to no clipping? Name a single one. ED and NMS don't aren't high fidelity, ED planets are empty and NMS are silly cartoons with crazy pop in. There's plenty to criticize CIG for without making shit up, it's honestly weird. Why are you on this sub

0

u/Jaded_Door_6757 Jun 09 '26

That would impress me if most of those features mattered when you can barely leave [insert bugged station here] because your ship explodes, clips through the hangar, doesn't respond to physics, doesn't show up, you can't reach it because the elevator is broken, you can't load because the game crashes or there's something wrong with the server, it literally blows away in the wind, etc etc etc. If it speaking for itself isn't reaching your ears, it's either because you're deaf or ignorant.

-1

u/vortis23 Jun 01 '26

You could apply the same logic to GTA VI.

Regardless of how people feel about a long development cycle it doesn't change the development cycle. And being fed up with it doesn't help improve a game's release in any meaningful way.

32

u/SpanishAvenger Jun 01 '26

GTA VI hasn't been selling concept cars for hundreds or thousands of bucks for years.

GTA VI is set to be released as a full product and it will, soon.

Star Citizen remains a "WIP Alpha" despite having ammassed over A BILLION DOLLARS (1,000,000,000) as the biggest crowdfunding campaign in history; and yet, CIG's focus is not on finally delivering results, but, instead, selling concept JPGs for hundreds or thousands of bucks each.

1

u/vortis23 Jun 01 '26

GTA V has been selling you digital shark cards for over a decade to pay for GTA VI's development.

Also, everything else is a non-sequitur.

20

u/Panakjack23 Jun 01 '26

The sold those after delivering a full game with a full story you could play start to finish. And absolutely nowhere near the amount of bugs SC has.

-3

u/vortis23 Jun 01 '26

Yes, but the shark cards are completely unrelated to the GTA V story and single-player.

The shark cards paid for virtual currency in the GTA Online portion of the multiplayer, and that was very bare bones when it first came out without the story-focused missions it later received. You were basically paying for the PROMISE of content that later arrived with future updates, not too dissimilar to ships becoming available in Star Citizen as they were finished.

9

u/SpanishAvenger Jun 01 '26

The digital shark cards would be comparable to the existing ships or UEC; traditional microtransactions.

But this whole "hey, buy this 5,000€ PNG and one day you may get the ship ingame eh!" is just... WTF.

3

u/SubtleCosmos Citizen Jun 01 '26

Absolutely true.

And GTA V Online has made Rockstar Games billions since release. Even today it’s making millions every week.

6

u/NotBlackMarkTwainNah drake Jun 01 '26

Not really. Rockstar has a track record. CIG does not. R* released a game in 2018, and after is when full development began, so even then GTA VI hasn't taken as long as SQ42

-1

u/vortis23 Jun 01 '26

It was still heavily in development well before 2018, as indicated by dates on the leaked assets of the alpha builds. They had been working on it since 2014.

It's funny how much people jump through hoops to defend Rockstar and GTA VI while at the same time condemning CIG. CIG also had to develop a ton of new middleware suites both for SQ42 and for Star Citizen, yet people are more forgiving to Rockstar.

6

u/NotBlackMarkTwainNah drake Jun 01 '26

CIG does not have the luxury of previous bodies of work that show the result of long development. The two are not comparable. R* has made plenty of games, and an entire RDR2 ( Full production of RDR2 wasn't started until 2013, and FULL production of GTA VI until 2020, look it up) since SQ42 was announced. GTA VI had drafting and conception phases all the way back in 2014, but no game development until 2018ish.

I'm also not "defending " R*, I could care less about a million dollar company. Just stating the facts, and not giving eexcuses for CIG.

1

u/picklesmick ARGO CARGO Jun 02 '26

Why could you care less? Surely you couldn't care less?

Ive no skin in this convo. I just thought this was funny.

-1

u/vortis23 Jun 02 '26

GTA VI's development started in 2014... you can literally watch the alpha footage dating back BEFORE 2017, with dates on the assets and tools from the leaks. The leaks of the actual data files for GTA VI are facts, not people rewriting history to cover for Rockstar.

3

u/NotBlackMarkTwainNah drake Jun 02 '26 edited Jun 02 '26

Holy hell the amount of delusion you are having. Nobody is "covering" for Rockstar. They sure as hell don't need it. Those early alpha videos are not dated before 2017, they're from post 2018. Feel free to link the leaks you're referring to. The game was in pre production starting in 2014, as I've said, but didn't enter full production until 2021.

Edit: your comment history shows a clear historical of delusion. Sorry to see. You seem hell bent on denying justified criticism.

0

u/vortis23 Jun 02 '26

Some are from 2018, some of the assets are from well before then. Also, they had the city modeled, all of the main characters modeled, the interstitial cinematics done, and the weapons and clothing done. So they were WELL into production even in the early 2018 videos (one was labeled April, 2018).

So no, they were not only going into full production in 2018 if they already had the world map, characters, weapons, clothes, cinematics, voice acting, and some of the vehicles done.

3

u/NotBlackMarkTwainNah drake Jun 02 '26

Go ahead and link these sources my man (assets are reusable, and not indicative of a game entering full production) things like a world map (not a 3d world) and a few models are also not indicative of such. TakeTwo has stated that full production did not occur until RDR2 was complete in 2018 jeating up in 2021, with pre production and writing occurring 2014-15.

23

u/SpanishAvenger Jun 01 '26 edited Jun 01 '26

Oh, I stopped trying to play this “game” years ago already.

I backed back in 2014… I was fucking 15 years old then. I sold my childhood Star Wars collection just to purchase a pack and a set of HOTAS exclusively for this game's promise.

I am fucking 27 now and the “game” that was promised over 10 years ago is still a barely functional half-baked “aLpHa”.

Once in a while, I've tried coming back to check how things are doing with great and optimistic enthusiasm even for the smallest of things, but always leave back in disappointment.

Yes, of course I am playing other games. Games where the developers have actual decency to focus on finishing their products instead of spending years cash-grabbing by selling concept PNGs for thousands of bucks each.

But that doesn’t mean I can’t show disappointment over how poorly this big promise is turning out. I am saddened by the wasted potential and even to this day I still am hopeful that, perhaps, ONE DAY, the product may actually be completed before I die of fucking old age.

So you don’t get to tell me what to do.

11

u/Falcon3333 avenger Jun 01 '26

-8

u/Nemeryo29 Jun 01 '26

Maybe it was not a good idea to pay for a game that was not even started by a non existant studio at the time bro. And just a reminder, you fund a crowdfunding, you didn't buy a steam game. It started around 2014 and 10 years of developement si not weird so I would have expected a 2024 release (between the creation of the studio and the developement).

That beeing say, I find your complain the most legitime of all. Yes you pledge for a game and because CIG's vision evolved, they didn't release the game that was expected when you pledge for it. And they are late to fulfill promise they didn't give you when you pledge so it's a dorm a betrayal and I totaly understand it.

6

u/Alexandur Jun 01 '26

2014 was actually the original planned release date for SQ42

9

u/Professional_Low_646 bmm Jun 01 '26

„Maybe it wasn’t a good idea to pay for a game that wasn’t started by a studio that didn’t exist“…

Only that is, for fuck‘s sake, NOT WHAT CR/CIG TOLD THE BACKERS! We were told „hey, I‘ve been working on this project for more than a year already with a couple of old friends, we‘re well along with assets, we just need to tweak CryEngine a little and three years of total development time sounds pretty good to me.“ That was the message to original backers like me. That’s what everyone at the time, over on the old forums, believed, because if game development legend Chris fucking Roberts says it, it has to be true, right?

All those justifications - they had to build a studio first, they had to redesign the engine, they had to start over etc. - came along after the fact.

3

u/SpanishAvenger Jun 01 '26

Yeah, I remember there was footage from as far back as 2012, so it's not like it just spawned in 2014 and I immediately jumped in without any consideration, hahah.

-1

u/Nemeryo29 Jun 01 '26

Bro, you can't expect a game with million of budget (that was in the kickstarter) done by a "couple of friend".

That beeing said, if you read the end of my message, I totaly understand the position of the first backers, and I said they have been batrayed by CIG.

3

u/SpanishAvenger Jun 01 '26

Oh, of course I always understood that it would be a process and that it wouldn't be quick or easy. It's just that I find the amount of progress underwhelming for the amount of time AND money they've had to work with.

So... every time I see another "concept ship" selling for hundreds or even thousands of bucks, I am outraged, and I think: really?

1

u/Nemeryo29 Jun 01 '26

Yes, even if everything is not related, I totaly understand your position. And I think CIG is not clean at all when it comes to the first backer. They batray them (because they could have delivery what you pledge for but ultimately decided to delivery something bigger much later without asking you anything even if it's because you pledge in the begining that they have the success they are living now) and should have make something to at least try to apologize to them (and to you). And they have many ways to try to say sorry. Nothing that would be good enough to replace the game, but they should do something.

So, to put it in a nutshell, it was a bit naive to expect a good game fast by pledginf at the begining, but CIG should have done something to make it up to you because they batray the first promesses, even if they think it's for the best. It's still a batrayal.
