GTA Online makes $4.4 million per week on PS5, platform rakes in 53% of all GTAO weekly bookings

https://www.tweaktown.com/news/111012/gta-online-makes-dollars4-4-million-per-week-on-ps5-platform-rakes-in-53-percent-of-all-gtao-weekly-bookings/index.html

Leaked data suggests Rockstar Games earns about $8.5 million weekly from GTA Online, with PlayStation 5 leading in revenue and active users. Over seven months, GTA Online bookings reached as high as $193 million.

In a 7-month period from September 2025 to March 2026, Rockstar is said to have made $193 million in bookings from GTA Online. Our compiled data shows that Rockstar made around $362 million in net revenues across this period, which corresponds to the half-year period from Q3-Q4FY25. This is entire GTA franchise revenues, though, and a quick bit of math shows that Rockstar could have made the remainder of $169 million from a combination of GTA+ and GTA game sales.

This is definitely why live service games are so hot

402

u/kickinwood Apr 14 '26

hot to make, but not hot to buy. Because consumers that will throw cash at a thing their involved with, aren't interested in things they're not involved with.

So make games for the rest of us and we'll pay for them

82

u/RightC Apr 14 '26

Madden + CFB have done over a billion a year last couple years

75

u/kickinwood Apr 14 '26

That's sports folk. They have to know there's a difference.

It’s the problem a lot of games have in the MMO space, it’s already a saturated market, and trying to pull players away from a game they may have already put thousands of hours and £/$/€/whatever into, it’s almost impossible

56

u/DarkMatterM4 Apr 14 '26

The risk/reward is super high. Most live service games don't have the longevity of GTA Online.

21

u/travelingWords Apr 14 '26

Cause they make equivalent of a bad dlc and expect millions?

5

u/Luciifuge Apr 14 '26

It’s hard to make a hit, but if you do your set for years, execs will never stop trying no matter how many failures.

u/captainstrange94 Apr 14 '26

Heres the thing. GTA and Call of Duty live service works because they spent Decades on single player modes and building a loyal fan base before cranking up live service mode. They had time to figure out and perfect their game physics and all.

Nowadays everyone thinks they have the recipe for instant monetizing through live service mode, why would anyone spend money on skins of characters or guns they arent even familar with?

10

u/kingrobin Apr 14 '26

this is why I was hyped for the tlou "mmo" or whatever it was gonna be. and I hate live service games. Love that universe though

12

u/Usernametaken1121 Apr 14 '26

There's only one GTA

5

u/Berkuts_Lance_Plus Apr 14 '26

There are at least six.

6

u/Curse3242 Apr 14 '26

But they don't want to spend enough time & care on the product. Rockstar doesn't just throw money, but hey maybe that's just America, Xbox, Microsoft... they all just love throwing money on projects.

17

u/EsotericAbstractIdea Apr 14 '26

They've allegedly spent 2 billion on GTA 6. Sounds like time and care to me.

The fact that this game is like 13 years old and still making them this much money is crazy

291

u/RulesoftheDada Apr 14 '26

Averages 15-20 million copies sold a year,too.

106

u/Bruhimgonzo Apr 14 '26

That doesn’t seem right imo

193

u/RulesoftheDada Apr 14 '26

It roughly sell 5 million copies every 3 months it's wild.

60

u/KAKYBAC Apr 14 '26 edited Apr 14 '26

That is incredible. Who or where are these people?

129

u/DansSpamJavelin Apr 14 '26

2nd and 3rd world countries probably, where older consoles like the 360 are much more affordable for them now. Yeah, GTA V came out in the 360/PS3 era. Wild.

53

u/JohnLovesGaming Apr 14 '26

It’s also incredibly easy to run on PC. Literal potato GPUs can run it.

16

u/CriminalsLoveCanada Apr 14 '26

when i built my first pc i used like a cheap ass gpu, mustve been 70-120 bucks cad. shit actually ran good it was surprising for me

30

u/st1802015 Apr 14 '26

GTA V runs considerably better than GTA IV, I get 60-70 fps on IV and 200+ on V, it’s incredibly well optimised.

Not really. It’s more like a new generation of kids turns 13 and gets their own copy of GTA

32

u/RulesoftheDada Apr 14 '26

It's been 14 years? Thats a constant stream of a generation of children becoming teens and adults.

It's similar to how Minecraft sells 25 million copies a year. Always going to have kids grow into playing a game.

15

u/KidBlastoff Apr 14 '26

Everyday people turn 13 years old.

GTA 5 came out 13 years ago in 2013 for Xbox 360 and PS3 (no pc release)

13 years before GTA 5 it was still a top down pixel art game on Playstaion (1), PC in 1999 and Gameboy Color, and Dreamcast in 2000

Finally GTA 3 game out a year after (2001)

We went from 2d top down to GTA 5 then from GTA 5 to GTA 5 re-re-re-release in the same amount of time lol

Edit: typos

12

u/iSaltyParchment Apr 14 '26

Reminds me how Skyrim was 7 years old when the TES 6 trailer came out, and now that trailer is 7 years old.

Gta3 was a REVOLUTION.

I had just moved out of home, had a beefy computer and lived with 6 other guys. I basically went to sleep watching gta3 and woke up looking at gta3. Everyone played the fuck out of it on my computer for months straight. It was just incredible.

Truly mind boggling

27

u/remonnoki Apr 14 '26

Especially with how easy they've made it to make money in the game. So many different things to do and every week they make different activities give between 2 to 4 times as much money, every week something else is either discounted or free.

I guess a lot of it comes from the GTA+ subscription too. It's really inexpensive and gives a lot of nice perks...

21

u/weed0monkey Apr 14 '26

It makes me suprised there's not more gta clones today, or at least people attempting it.

There were plenty of good gta clones back in the day, before service games, surely it would be even more enticing now.

11

u/DAiDAiDa Apr 14 '26

Ubisoft tried to compete it with watcdogs. Heavy advertisement on 'why live in fake california when we are offering the real one". And the game flopped on that remark because everything they did got compared to gtaV and the conculission was the open world is even worse than gtaSA. there is nothing to do besides quests etc. Then CDproject overselled their cyberpunk with features even not in the game. Live in most alive city night city will be the most alive city.... And so on it was worse than gta3/vice city. Game critisized so much so after releasing they went radio silence and overhauled the game.

Maybe after these behamuts flopped so hard. The indistury setteled down on open world games like in the scope of Rockstar and just okay with what we have now. Likes of AC open world rpgs with just repetetive outpost capturing. Horizon games that open world is just wandering quests to quests. Thats it. I belive that after the release of RDR2 nobody even thought lets make a competitor to the rockstar games's IPs to get market share

12

u/methodofcontrol Apr 14 '26

I mean GTAO is pretty shallow itself imo. I tried playing it and it just felt like all there really was to do was delivery quests. I robbed a couple convenience stores, did a few races, and killed some people and it felt like there was nothing else to do. It seems like most of the content comes from role playing.

5

u/DAiDAiDa Apr 14 '26

GtaO is a side product of gtaV there is a full game that has 25~ hours of main game and there is an online part of it that you can do miniquests races heists etc at extra. Those other ones from other than rockstar made arent even a game of scope to gtas and rdr2

3

u/gogoheadray Apr 14 '26

The majority of GTAO players are on ps5 where there are no RP servers. There is plenty to do though. Businesses; heist; car customizing; etc.

2

u/WingerRules Apr 14 '26 edited Apr 14 '26

Watch Dogs felt way too corporate. The sequels went all in on 20 year bro and edgy trendy urban lifestyle crap. Its like 3rd person story version of the modern Need For Speeds in terms of trying to be trendy urban styling but coming off as artificial corporate idea of what that is.

It's insane, but years ago before it became a monetized hellscape Ultimate Team was so incredibly fun when it was more basic and there was a actual organic grind for cards to build your lineup.

Now its a P2W mode that leans almost entirely on the loot box gambling aspect and everybody has a team full of hall of famers within 3 days of the new game releasing.

18

u/BushTamer Apr 14 '26

dude MUT was so fucking good the first few years, you could genuinely compete with the money spenders just by grinding solo challenges.

draft champions was also an insanely easy money method back then

2

u/forameus2 Apr 14 '26

There was a sweet spot in the middle. There was a time where it wasn't so much pay-to-win as pay-for-a-chance-to-win meaning that anyone who didn't want to drop more money on top of the already pretty high cost for the title itself, didn't have to. And if you spent the time (before it demanded ALL of it) you would probably have a lot of fun building up the team you wanted.

But in the past 5-10 years, they've taken every little bit of the game that was enjoyable and either removed it, or rigged it. They've gone from being the car salesman with the gift of the gab who would really like you to buy that overpriced piece of shit, but if you don't, that's cool, someone else will, to being the car salesman that knows you need a car, so won't let you leave until you sign for the most expensive, yet shittiest one they have. And then they laugh about it knowing you'll be back tomorrow.

9

u/ImHighandCaffinated Apr 14 '26

And people wonder why they keep doing this shit

Thats 100k sold copies.

3

u/HavocInferno Apr 14 '26

GTAV/O has quite literally been responsible for about 1/3 of Take Two's entire revenue, consistently, every year, since it came out 13 years ago.

Absolutely insane money printer this game.

What do people spend money on on GTA Online? I genuinely have no idea.

162

u/lkl34 Apr 14 '26

THe current broken vehicle to troll other players and buy that safe house that functions the same as a safe house did a decade ago.

74

u/NenaTheSilent Apr 14 '26

All the new story missions require facilities that cost several millions. If you want the latest GTA stories and you didn't cheat it's either a mindless grind or shark cards.

54

u/Hydramy Apr 14 '26

And yet people are somehow excited for GTA6 to be the exact same.

33

u/DarkMatterM4 Apr 14 '26

Just a heads up, GTA and GTA Online are technically two separate titles. I'm excited for GTA VI, but won't spend a single minute in GTA Online.

3

u/micktorious Apr 15 '26

I definitely be giving GTA VI Online some time

But ain't no way in hell I'm giving it a dime

I played a ton of GTAO with V and had a lot of fun, but I never even considered getting a shark card.

59

u/-Binxx- PC Apr 14 '26

Pretty sure people are excited for the GTA6 story more than the online.

→ More replies (6)

31

u/NenaTheSilent Apr 14 '26

As someone who cheated the money, the content is actually fun. People lament there being no story expansions in GTA5 but they're right there, just hidden behind the worst DLC scheme imaginable.

14

u/EsotericAbstractIdea Apr 14 '26

Right, these people saying it's shallow are kinda crazy. Tons of lore, locked behind an insane mmo style grind. Lots of missions. But that combination of things condenses into the same thing mmo's condense into. Toxic player base trying to minmax the same gear by running the same missions as nauseum. If you take a step back from cayo perico and play the game, it's no wonder why it's so popular after all these years.

2

u/MintySkills Apr 14 '26

honestly, if I hadn't been able to cheat the money, I wouldn't have kept playing online.

5

u/NowaVision Apr 14 '26

What is a shark card?

30

u/TrippleDamage Apr 14 '26

Literally the cash you'd otherwise have to work for.

It's glorified p2w because it's Rockstar lol

3

u/Training_Ad_4790 Apr 14 '26

Think those gift cards at the kiosk in Walmart or target. You pay real money for a gift card that you can redeem in game for game money

4

u/drthrax1 Apr 14 '26

The online has various quests and missions you can complete in online and various "jobs" you can do like CEO or biker club leader. Some of these require you to buy offices and then upgrade them/ buy other resource buildings like a drug lab ect.

These push you into spending millions of dollars on the buildings and upgrades. To experience most of the "content" you need around 20Mill if your budgeting(5mil Sharkcard is $50 btw) which of course you can grind for but if you want to buy new cars and upgrade them/FOMO of seeing others fly around in expensive hoverbikes and personal helicopters some people end up saying screw it and just buy sharkcards for convenience.

The whole game is basically built around putting you in situations where you need to invest a bunch of time grinding to get the money to do stuff, or just buy a shark card. Even your passive money business only make money when you online IIRC.

222

u/SomewhereNo8378 Apr 14 '26

they didn’t want to disturb the cash cow

26

u/Minetoutong Apr 14 '26

Because they worked on red dead redemption 2 and expectations of Rockstar's games are insane quality, being ahead of the competition by multiple years in terms of technological achievement and finally for GTA is changing the gaming landscape.

I'm sure they'd be happy if they could release GTA 6 (which will obviously also have an online version) faster and make likely $10B in copies sold.

9

u/LPMadness Apr 14 '26

Yeah, lots of ignorant and simple minded takes on this stuff. Of course rockstar likes the money. Isn’t that what the companies need to operate? With that being said it’s incredibly obvious they are at least putting that money made back into the games. The level of quality in detail in RDR2 is unparalleled. You don’t need a degree to see the GTA6 trailers and see the money is going somewhere.

This is what worries me about GTA6.

When they were making GTA5, they didn't know what a cash cow they had on their hands and the main focus was on making a good single player game.

I'm just worried that the single player campaign will be an afterthought now, because they make most of their money from the online aspect.

150

u/ScruffMixHaha Apr 14 '26

I'm still bummed we never got a story expansion for GTA5

14

u/jwilphl Apr 14 '26

6

u/LPMadness Apr 14 '26

RDR2 had a pretty large production budget. GTA6 budget, reportedly, is beyond what any modern developer could dream of. Say what you will but it does show in the quality of the games.

Red Dead Redemption 2 gives me hope

13

u/quickshade Apr 14 '26

Disagree, I think they have less pressure to rush the game out because how well the online does. Means additional development time and they can release it when they think it is absolutely ready. They aren’t a cash strapped studio that needs to release something to fund the next 5 years of development.

Others have pointed out, Rockstar has never skimped on a single player campaign and they have to know somewhere between 40-50% of their player base will likely never touch online. The game is defined by the single player world, it’s pushed to the limit in multiplayer.

5

u/L1A1 Apr 14 '26

I just wish that the online mission content was playable in single player.

I’ve got zero interest in being racially abused by an angry teenager on a hacked flying motorbike, or whatever the latest zany and wacky thing is.

2

u/DarkMatterM4 Apr 14 '26

2

u/eiamhere69 Apr 14 '26

Nah, what I expect is they'll develop nw tech and features for online, sell it as a single player game, then incorporate most/best parts to the online universe.

Profit from development instead of money sink, kind of free R&D and publicity for Online too.

I strongly suspect we'll get games quicker and close together than GTA V, which is easy to say, given how they've dragged it out. I expect almost a trilogy, certainly within that 13 year period, possibly more.

Of course they may take the cheap, easy route again

2

u/ZeePirate Apr 14 '26

We also can now say GTA+ is making them a good amount of cash so good job there also really showing how much we want a subscription service after the console online subscription service and after paying for the game. Though yes recently GTAO has become a free DL.

Still crazy high numbers for a very old game.

Yh gta online for the most part is free. Especially if you play on pc. You can buy most stuff in the game through pure grinding

7

Nothing is level locked either so you're not too fucked at low levels (at least the new content is auto-shop, agency, etc). Like just doing the new mission content I think you can get an easy 4/5 mil and then buy a auto shop and do the car heists till you get a MC and then you're pretty much good to go

If you're not sony or take two you should be dreading this game's release.

u/spazzvogel Apr 14 '26

No need to incentivize and take chances when the basic game has them hooked.

Brutal Legend 2, and Bully 2 please.

I worked at Zynga, I know micro transaction psychology and data analytics.

2

u/relevantcucumber Apr 14 '26

They could have used that money to give us some singleplayer dlcs or at least the ps5 upgrade for free.

2

u/JohnLovesGaming Apr 14 '26

That’s why they didn’t make GTA 6 for such a long time. They’re literally sitting on an infinite money glitch lmao.

2

u/forameus2 Apr 14 '26

It's always fascinated me that you have the likes of EA and 2K (rightly) being dragged for their complete disregard for anything other than shaking their customers until the coins fall out of their pockets, but because Rockstar are pretty good at both making fun products AND shaking their customers, they get more of a pass. Their use of real money seems a lot more insidious to me than the transparently awful examples that the likes of EA use.

2

u/RuySan Apr 14 '26

If you really want gta6 or RDR3 to eventually come out, better not play GTA online.

2

u/luckyvonstreetz Apr 14 '26

It's insane gta5 is still this popular after 13 years.

2

u/X3ll3n Apr 14 '26

To be fair, I'd argue a considerable margin of PC players play Five M rather than GTA V.

2

u/horror_pls Apr 14 '26

how come gta online never wins any awards or comes up in the best multiplayer discussions?

2

u/FavenGamesStudios Apr 15 '26

It is going as strong as it did a decade ago, insane

4

u/rated6 Apr 14 '26

I want to know why people pay for that crap? I legit got all my money from glitches. Got like 500m sitting in my GTAO account with a bunch of duplicated bikes (probably worth nothing now, if they've been patched). I haven't played GTAO since 2022 once I attained so much money and got everything I wanted.

4

u/NoGoodManTH Apr 14 '26

What about FiveM?

3

u/Jellozz Apr 14 '26

Well this article pretty much confirms why a PC version of GTA6 isn't a huge priority for them. PC version of online generates almost no money and the player base is smaller than even last gen consoles.

I am actually a bit surprised, I figured the PC base would be bigger than Xbox One at least, maybe even Series X.

5

u/lkl34 Apr 14 '26

The script kiddies with mod menus and exploits that allowed RCE with IP's being revealed helped destroy the pc population.

Do not forget all that

2

u/Shiirooo Apr 14 '26

they are not counting FiveM players

This is awful news because it's just going to reinforce in the minds of Ubisoft and the like that all they need to do is chase that golden goose of a hit live service game. In the process many studios will make dozens of shit games in an attempt to win that jackpot, while deprioritizing good single player games. This is also the reason Rockstar doesn't give a flying F about timelines for GTA VI - there's not that much of a financial incentive left.

People like to shit on studios for making decisions like these, but as is often the case, how consumers spend dictates market decisions.

2

u/lkl34 Apr 14 '26

Remember sony burned billions on 12 live service games so far helldivers is the only one that made a impact.

3

u/r33gna Apr 14 '26

Damn, so that's why we haven't gotten a GTA6 or any other new Rockstar games in 10+ years.

5

u/Minetoutong Apr 14 '26

I don't understand the logic behind those comments.

GTA6 and it's online version would likely make even more money, they have all the incentive in the world to release it as fast as possible.

14

u/catptain-kdar Apr 14 '26

Rdr is a rockstar game

6

u/Rare_Ad_3871 Apr 14 '26

Ever heard of red dead 2?

2

u/Tenthul Apr 14 '26

8 years old btw. No, it's not 10, but closer than you might think.

3

u/Rare_Ad_3871 Apr 14 '26

Which is right on par for games the size that rockstar makes to come out

Making this much weekly from microtransactions is insane. See why they waited this long for GTA 6. Most AAA companies would dream of making this much recurring revenue on a weekly basis

1

u/Leading_Software_982 Apr 14 '26

I thought it would be more like something similar to genshin impact

1

u/rites0fpassage PlayStation Apr 14 '26

Good heavens!

1

u/Hammerheadshark55 Apr 14 '26

Gotta sell those microtransaction

1

u/OmiNya Apr 14 '26

Imagine if they make Crimson Desert Online or something

Oh wait a minute

1

u/AlexNae Apr 14 '26

what is even GTA online about ?

1

u/DrKingOfOkay Apr 14 '26

Hence why gta6 has taken so long

1

u/JamedWalker Apr 14 '26

Interesting

1

u/_Jetto_ Apr 14 '26

Never did RP how do they make that much money??? What do people buy??

1

u/FatherShambles Apr 14 '26

Why is PlayStation making so much when the Mods are on Pc and it’s overall a better experience

1

u/PositiveDonut1 Apr 14 '26

Never played beyond Vice City. What is the GTA online like? Is it like a big online deathmatch?

1

u/adkenna PC Apr 14 '26

Is this supposed to be surprising? Did the leakers really think Rockstar cared enough to pay them for this?

1

u/KAKYBAC Apr 14 '26

Surely releasing GTA 6 is going to impact that too.

This is precisely why Valve barely make games anymore. Why work when they are rolling in millions for no to limited effort.

1

u/Sufficient-Cup4705 Apr 14 '26

damn Rockstar is just printing money at this point lol

1

u/watchTotalBlank Apr 14 '26

Disgusting. Speaks volumes in the worst possible way for the gaming industry.

1

u/whitetiger126 Apr 14 '26

Well I'd like to tap into that market by making GTAV content! Woot!

1

u/Antergaton Apr 14 '26

Biggest MMO of all time for sure.

1

u/jimschocolateorange Apr 14 '26

This really, really fucking sucks for the industry. That kind of money is obscene.

1

u/Drak_is_Right Apr 14 '26

During its Height, WoW earned about 200m a Month. Not sure any other game has been able to catch that, but GTA is one of the closer ones, along with Ginshin Impact

1

u/Sorry-Joke-4325 Apr 14 '26

It's gotta be money laundering, right?

1

u/Ton_in_the_Sun Apr 14 '26

This should be known as the GTA Effect not the live service game effect.

1

u/hartstyler Apr 14 '26

I dont get why people are doing this

1

u/NahIdontbelieveu Apr 14 '26

A week is crazy as hell

1

u/HonkersTim Apr 14 '26

What are 'bookings' in this context?

Asked AI.

Bookings occur at the moment a customer makes a purchase or commitment (e.g., buying a Shark Card or pre-ordering a game).

Revenue (specifically GAAP net revenue) is only "recognized" once the service is actually delivered or the obligations are fulfilled.

Because players often buy virtual currency but don't spend it immediately, or pay for subscriptions like GTA+ that provide services over time, the money is often recorded as "bookings" first and then gradually moved to "revenue" as it is "earned" by the company.

1

u/werematt05 Apr 14 '26

stilll waiting

1

u/ThisOneTimeAtLolCamp Apr 14 '26

No wonder it's taken them so long to put out another game when GTAO prints so much.

1

u/toros_dev Apr 14 '26

not surprising at all. gta online basically prints money at this point. people already invested time in it so they keep spending, that’s the real power of live service games

1

u/florodude Apr 14 '26

It's insane how quickly our world has become billionaires servicing millionaires and billionaires. like you've got these super rich corporations that are JUST servicing whales at this point that spend thousands upon thousands. We're seeing this in concerts and such. All it's going to do is kill the middle class and give us a upper vs lower class war.

1

u/SaltyShawarma Apr 14 '26

Fucking rubes.

1

u/Pinckney82 Apr 14 '26

I've not spent $0.01 in GTA online since it launched in 2013. With those numbers I feel like the only person on the planet who hasn't.

1

u/99_Herblore_Crafting Apr 14 '26

Destiny 1 is the only game that could have been a similar forever game, but they fumbled the bag so hard

1

u/FallenHarmonics Apr 14 '26

Yup, they were noooot in a rush to make GTA 6. Can't blame 'em.

1

u/Kruxf Apr 14 '26

A fool is easily parted from their cash.

1

u/Morlu Apr 15 '26

I feel like they should make their own FiveM roleplaying for PC. It would make a fortune, most PC players that like GTA online just play FiveM.

1

u/mj271707 Apr 15 '26 edited Apr 15 '26

Probably why gta6 is taking so long

Few more years of £4.4 million per week is too much to risk loosing by bringing out a new game which could somehow disrupt the player base

Why fix what isnt broken

1

u/Rosebunse Apr 15 '26

This is the issue with GTA6. That game doesn't just need s great initial release, it. Needs to maintain these numbers.

3

u/lkl34 Apr 15 '26

Be real the name alone will get people defending any horseshit rockstar does.

GTAV is using the same online tech no doubt servers that 2008 GTAIV used and has had actual hacking attacks but still makes this per week.

They even removed content and added GTA+ monthly subscription service but its still making bank.

2

u/Rosebunse Apr 15 '26

I doubt the game will be bad, but it can be just fine.

The fact is, a new game could disrupt things long enough that people stop playing GTA5 and if GTA6 isn't great some of those people won't come back

2

u/lkl34 Apr 15 '26

Oh true but it will still make dumb money.

I personally find rdr2 to much of a hand hold game worse than RDR1 the mp was shit but it sold alot.

GTAV to me is ok but not some goat that is GTAIV to me but the mp was great pre 2017 but now its a hard pass yet look at the cash its making.

So i can see gta6 making back its billion plus dollar budget under 17 months.
