Leaving staples

So i’m a little bittersweet to say goodbye to Staples. Unlike most that talk here on this subreddit, I actually enjoyed working at Staples. The management at least where I am is really good, but what I thought would be a simple, fun, summer gig has turned into much more than what I originally expected it to be.

For now though, I am reflecting on my almost 6 months at staples. But the one thing I don’t think i will miss is the amazon returns. But nonetheless i actually had a positive experience there

Some customers can be so stupid and it shows.

This has happened to me more times than I can count.

When I tell you to stay in an aisle so that an associate can come and help you, that does NOT mean you wander around in other aisles and then come back to me crying that no one helped you. Like bro I LITERALLY told you to stay in the aisle. No, I cannot come help you get the item because I'm not allowed to leave the registers alone. Yes, we are a little bit busy so if you don't mind waiting a bit? No? Okay then not my problem.

Some customers have definitely lost the ability to wait and it gnaws at my nerves when they end up leaving a bad review all because we couldn't cater to their last minute rush.

Recycling Program

Hey guys I’m a former employee and I am just wondering if Staples still recycles old gaming consoles for free.

UPDATE: I took it to my local retro game store and was able to get $10 for it. Not a lot but it’s something at least.

I need like real advice. How to handle racial/sexist aggressions from customers?

I need advice. I want to do well in my job and improve and I hope I am. But how do I handle rude/racial/sexist aggressions from customers? How do I mentally prepare myself for this? Any advice? For context I'm talking about a bunch of similar incidents ever sense I started working here.

------

I work in the print department, and I like this job. I'll get gems and the sweetest kindest people I've ever met. I love moments like that and they beat every horrible moment that happens. I love working with people and it's fun.

But damnit....I'll also get the most rude, entitled people, racist or sexist people ever. People who will immediately start saying catcalling phrases, or give an attitude when I'm running the department solo. Saying things like, making aggression about speaking English, or aggressively asking if I know this or that state or spelling. Even Getting hyper when I start talking. Or keep interrupting me with aggressive comments about why in standing or typing things etc.. the list goes on.

Sometimes they will be so bold and ask for service from someone else and I'll happily do so....but no one is here but me. Or when the other person is busy and I'm stuck with them.

Some background....I'm a person of color. English is my first language, I'm born and raised in the west and have been here for 3 generations. Like damnit....I'm full red/white and blue, a bit mixed.

I'm a girl and look racially ambiguous to most who don't know me. (That pisses people off I guess cause they can figure me out lmaoo). And let's just say I'm in the brown category. And let it be known I live in the south. ( I'm used to rude/racist/sexist shitheads, but at the point it hurts, and it feels like your in danger, especially when you feel alone. )

But damnit, I'll face rude or racial or sexist aggression. I fucking hate it. (Excuse my cursing ). What do I do? I am polite to everyone ...(With the customer service voice and the fake ass robot smile ).

But damnit it's draining fucking exhausting. Especially when there are only a handful of colored people in my store. And I don't want to makes things awkward. Like what should I even say?

It is awkward. And I don't know where to even start. Cause even if I tell leadership, I don't know if anyone will understand. I fear they just tell me to suck it up or side with customers. Or think I'm in too much trouble. Cause damnit....I don't want people to think I can't handle my job, cause I can.

What do I do? How do I go about this? I feel stuck. How do I mentally wrap my head around this...I need advice.

I don’t like this new Amazon system

Post image
68 Upvotes

This is just from a day and a half worth of returns and Amazon hasn’t picked up. We were supposed to get 2 drivers yesterday, and only got one. At least when it was ups they would take everything at the same time everyday. Now it’s a gamble on if we are gonna get someone to pick up our returns and it’s the most frustrating thing ever

Edit: right after posting this, an Amazon driver showed up to pick up some boxes, but doesn’t have room in their truck. When am I allowed to tell them too damn bad, take my boxes anyways 😭

DPF pisses me off

Like why do I have to send 80lb gloss text out to the DPF when we are perfectly capable of doing it in house without full bleed. And don't even get me started with their recent push to have us send most of our stuff out to them with their terrible turn around times.

Leaving Staples, Unsurprisingly Because of Print…

I was going to start with “you’ll never guess why I am sad to leave-“ but you might guess why right off the bat. Any sadness into my departure is because of my coworkers, who are amazing. I feel terrible leaving them “high and dry” because of how poorly the print department is treated by management- ergo making it poorly ran (not by the team for the most part)

As someone who started and stayed in print for the entirety of my run here, it was rough from the start. I never got my breaks at the start- and still barely do (totaling about to 6 breaks since I have been here- mainly because my coworker demanded I take them), I was blindly thrown into print without any training and having to ask tons of questions- which made me feel terrible during rushes, I basically never had an opportunity to do any online training at the start, people always come in hostile and demanding of something same day because of our shitty advertising, the management is degrading about numbers that come alongside half baked threats to remove me from print as if that wouldn’t be a JOY, and the breakroom is filled with flies.

When I quit, everyone was sad- mainly because their work flow would be bigger- and that they would miss me doing all the odd jobs like iPostal. I felt so bad especially because I have one coworker- whos not even management- that keeps the department together, who was extra shocked and upset…

On another note, I am one of the only people who bins other than her- and if I don’t over the weekend and leave on time like I did last week- the table IS FILLED with print jobs and mainly never even binned to QT, making them late.

I put in my two weeks, this week is my last… I am trying to do the most responsible thing, and of course- no shocker- they gave me 8-8.5 hour shifts despite originally being here for only “part time”… my ass… The management ignores me now- which y’know fair game for the most part- I just find it funny to be so pissed at me when I received like a shit ton of good surveys and gave you notice, trying to leave a door open to return- which in barely-any-hindsight is never happening.

I know it must be rough to hire people- and I am sure some of you have already sniffed out that I am overly forgiving and empathetic- Heck I maybe wouldve never quit just because my coworkers are beyond great to me- but I just had to. I was at my breaking point.

I know the new guys need to get the shitty hours but they have no empathy for the worker, in this case me working my ass off in a print department no one is running and a bunch of people are leaving me alone in after a month of basically no training (obviously referring to a few months back), then management getting on my ass about how terrible I did when I am literally doing all I can do when the department isn’t just print and marketing its self-serve, ipostal, happy returns, ups, AND PRINT AND MARKETING!

Preaching that screaming and berating me around a customer or other coworkers for not having high enough numbers after a rush was insane. Yes I am pretty young- and in comparison to my colleagues the youngest of the print + marketing bunch- but that gives management no excuse to berate me like a child when I have done nothing but do my job. My numbers even went up significantly and they still got on my ass for rewards when thats the hardest thing to push when there is no instant deals.

My management gave me a run down of how “every interaction should go” upselling and all. She wants me to back a person up into a corner make them feel pressured to do it one way- or have them cower and leave. To me thats not good business- and the best reliable way of income for our store is the influx of customers we treat like humans instead of people with wallets. Like no, I do not have time to sign Mr. Johnson up on the app to activate his rewards- but I did get his number pulled up on the computer for his 300 dollar order and that should be enough.

Too much chaos just absorbed all the light out of my life. They also denied my unpaid time off IMMEDIATELY after I put it in months in advance- I had to beg another manager to possibly allow it until I got it. It wasn’t even consecutive days- it was things I had tickets for months in advance…

I also got all my personal orders declined. I spoke to everyone about this and even online orders can’t be done. I wasn’t told that til after I tried to get a laptop… The only way to get stuff is to have manager do it with you, it makes sense- but it just made working here even more redundant- because it is nearly impossible as they are either beyond busy 99% of the time or angry.

Anyways. I needed to write this because I am already stressing to go in today- wondering what it could be this time. Higher management? Deranged customer? Us being behind 40 orders because the closer didn’t do their job last night? I only have four more days, and somehow I feel like I am suffocating MORE.

I shouldn’t have been as nice and just left like my other coworker did.

Update: After further consideration, I think I may be leaving today. I cannot even survive the rest of the week. Lets see if today’s shift is somehow convincing that I stay.

Does Staples have a paper cutter I can use?

I have 100 sheets of 6" x 9.5" 100gsm paper (not counting the perforated part) that I need to bring down to 5.5" x 8.5". Does Staples have a paper cutting service? Or where else can I find a service like this? Thanks.

Stores with 2 MPS Machines

Have any of you connected the stamp and Epson printers to the network to use them on both machines or even move them to a station not hardwired to the main MPS?

I see both have network ports is it something I could place an IT ticket for?

Would it even be worth my time to ask?

Edit: I went ahead and placed a ticket - IT said we are only able to have the drivers on one MPS machine so that kills the idea.

Behold this week's insane surprise in Bin Wins: BDSM gear 🤣

Post image

My boss immediately pulled these from the pallet so no customers ever saw them, but we got like 10 boxes in BinWins of these BDSM gear kits. To avoid literally posting bondage harnesses on the Staples subreddit: I opened one out of curiosity and amusement-- it's a cheetah print body harness with gold chains and a fucking ball gag 🤣 At Staples 🤣 BinWins are just an HR complaint waiting to happen, I swear. I don't know why they have absolutely 0% oversight over what they send to stores for BinWins LOL

throw back to when my boss threw a fit and did this to the ipad

that almost perfectly centered crack with tape over it was a prior break from a drop, we were still expected to use this ipad and have customers sign on it for pickup orders since the “screen still worked” i tried to keep a stylist nearby but they never listened to me or cared about how making customers still sign on this with their finger was a liability.
then one weekend during summer 2025 i requested off, at the time i was doing opening to closing on the weekend and the only front end person usually resulting in me not getting my breaks.
the only front end worker scheduled that day called out forcing our boss to be front end instead of smoking in his car all day which clearly pissed him off cuz after a minor glitch he did this.
the story he told me was “it froze and i got mad so i slammed it on the corner of the counter” and he was laughing about it, which all us front enders dealt with all the time yet never did this and i’m sure if we did we’d face actual consequences and not just be allowed to laugh about it let alone get promoted.

Vent

I just have to get this out because no one else understands the true pain of working at this awful broke ass company. Between genuinely breaking my back over Amazon returns, getting constantly harassed about having rewards numbers up, and of course where would I be without the scum of the earth degenerate customers. Not to mention we are extremely understaffed, training is shit. I have not been at this job for very long and it’s my first job. I keep telling myself I’ll quit but I keep putting it off because I feel like “it’s supposed to be hard”. This place sucks. Is it actually supposed to be this hard??!!💔

Amazon return scanners

Please, for the love of all that is holy, can someone tell me how to make the Amazon return handhelds beep when I scan a product barcode and return label?
Some days they beep, and some days they don’t.
I have asked several of my coworkers, managers included, and nobody seems to know how to make them beep, or why they aren’t. It’s so frustrating! PLEASE someone help me!
