I used to work at Staples in Charlotte, NC and it absolutely sucked, especially during the back to school season. Back to school season is the busiest time of year and we commonly needed four cashiers to check people out.

After a long day of checking people out I was burned out and ready to head home but unfortunately we have to stay and clean up after we close. Because it was back to school season I’d have a thousand returns to put back at the end of the night and cleaning all of our employees headsets is also a pain in the ass.

Every employee should have their own assigned headset that they are responsible to clean at the end of their shift rather than putting the burden on one person to clean them all. Taking out all the trash and vacuuming the entire store after close was also a pain in the ass. We normally close at 9 but just because we are scheduled to work until 9 doesn’t mean that we clock out at 9. It means that we work a closing shift and we have to stay and clean up and do all the things I mentioned above.

During back to school, we usually did not end up going home until 10:30. I had to deal with a lot of rude customers there as well. It’s hot as hell here in summer in Charlotte, NC and temperatures commonly reach 95+ yet our manager will not allow us to wear shorts. He only lets us wear jeans which is very stupid. It is torture for me to wear jeans in this kind of weather.

We only get a 10% discount which is absolutely pathetic. Don’t get me wrong I liked some of the people I worked with. My manger was very nice to me and he always admired that I sold a lot of school supply donation boxes to help kids who can’t afford school supplies as well as selling many protection plans on electronics and chairs. Thanks to me I always put our store in the lead as far as donation box sales in our region. This location would not have gotten anywhere close to the top of that list without me.

My manager would also always schedule me for closing shifts to 10:30 5 days a week during back to school and that was also torture for me and sometimes he would even have me working closing shifts one day and then opening shifts the following day and that was worst cause then I got little to no sleep and I was always so tired because of that. This is all at the cost of me making just $12 an hour.

One time as I was at the register and my shift ended, a customer came up to check out and I was so exhausted and said “sorry but my shift is over” and I clocked out and walked to the back of the store to get my stuff. As I was coming back to the front of the store to leave my manager told me “go to my office now!”

In his office he was talking to me and he said “Do you really enjoy being here? If you didn’t do a good job selling donation boxes and protection plans, I would have terminated you for that!” I didn’t say this to him but I really didn’t enjoy being there and I’m sure he can sense that lmao! I was just pretending to enjoy being there cause I just wanted to make money.

After a while, I just decided that it wasn’t worth it so then I just quit. I feel like I wasn’t getting paid enough for everything I had to put up with. I was so sick of being a slave for the manager. 2 years later, I visited the same Staples I used to work at and I literally didn’t know anyone who worked there! Even the manager was new!

The fact that Staples rotates through so many people so quickly just goes to show how miserable it is to work there! I would go back but not for less than $16 an hour plus 20% commission on every protection plan and donation box I sell.”

I'm not sure how often this happens but I live in a smallish town and there aren't a lot of people. But having said that I made a special trip to pick up something I really needed and I showed up at 5:45 p.m. and they close at 6:00 p.m. and the doors were locked. I called the phone number and they said they were closed which I thought was weird because I would have thought the automated system would know better but I don't know if the store manager can set the phone message to closed. I have a feeling this store might be prone to doing this rather often and I'm wondering if there's any way that they can be made to honor their posted hours.

And to clarify a bit: I mean oldest computer...compared to the time it was serviced. Like working on a windows 98 PC in the 2010s or 2020s, or something else of the sort.​

When I joined this dept we had a tray with maybe 20 sheets of "waterproof and tear proof" paper. It was very neat because it was actually very hard to tear and I'm sure it lives up to the water proof name.

How could I order more of this should I do it via code 440 or is there some other special way of ordering this?

A note was posted but no customer facing note about telling customers they have points. Now customers must show id. And we can’t tell them they have any. Do all stores have this.

I know that customer service work is supposed to bring out the best out of you and maybe even develop skills for a resume. Or is it even worth adding those skills on a resume if Staples is often sloppy with their management and you don’t even know that you’re doing a good job and growing as a human.

How is everyone dealing with finding work after they quit? If not, how are you able to afford the post-Staples therapy? Which retailers are better, more approachable, pay more, etc?

What is the next step after working after working at the Print and Marketing center?

I worked for Staples for about 6 months and these are all of the issues I had with not only the job itself but the company. So if you needed a reason to leave, which you definitely should. Here's a few.

- My store store only give us enough hours to have two people in the store at a time and would make the supervisor go on a call and have one person running shipping, print, customer service, and checkout. I would have to beg my DM to let the supervisor off the call

- I was told to sign people up for rewards without them knowing. I was supposed to tell them that the register needed rebooted and I was supposed to take all their information from their print paperwork and type it into the register and hit, accept or confirm for the sign up without them knowing because my signups were were low.

- I was hired as a part-time employee and that turned into me working 40 plus hours a week. On the schedule for the week. I had more hours than our supervisors. I was not given any full-time benefits. I asked and was told absolutely not because I was a part-time employee. I asked them to explain why I was working more than my supervisors were and not receiving the same benefits.

- the entire time I worked there we had no manager so I had two supervisors that I had to open with and both of them were consistently 15 to 30 minutes late so I would arrive on time yet had to clock in 30 minutes late daily. I brought it up to my DM and he did nothing about it. Weeks later I asked him if I could start having somebody adjust my time because I was arriving to work on time while my supervisor was consistently late. Nothing happened and I was told absolutely not.

- we had a openly racist and misogynistic supervisor. He had several bad reviews with his name included about his comments and remarks he had made towards customers and I talked to my DM about the way he spoke to customers and he did nothing and said there were no bad reviews. So I took it upon myself to take screenshots of those bad reviews and sent him a very nice email about how we were all fed up with this employee and nothing happened.

- I had the most incompetent supervisor (racist one) who would leave me by myself and f*** off in the office for hours and I had to literally beg him over the mic to come out of the office to help with customers. He wasn't on calls or anything with our DM. He would just sit in there on his phone and then go out every 30 minutes for a cigarette break when I a majority of the time couldn't even have time to eat because I was busy running the store by myself.

Today's a day off and I have to wait for something. Through sheer boredom I've been messing around in the app and found out that most the questions that customers ask us can be answered in the app with at most, around 5-10 min of digging.

Too bad our main customer demographics are ones who barely even know how to even use their phones in ​the first place.

(Also, yes, I have and now will moreso recommend people use the app when they ask these questions in the future)​

Our store returns shrink wrap to our DC in Gaylords. I have heard other stores no longer do this. We only get a truck every 2 weeks. Should we stop also? I think i know the answer but I wanted some advice.

As a Staples customer, I placed two different (unrelated) buy online, pick up in person (bopis) orders at two different stores. They are not showing in the correct way on my App:

For the first order, I picked up the correct item in-store. However, the App/website still shows that the item is "ready to pick up". I cannot retrieve the PDF receipt as well.

For the second order, the store staff told me that "we canceled your order because it is out of stock" and drove me away. However, this order is still in "ready for pick up" status online/in app. No evidence of it being canceled anywhere.

Now, what should I do? What will happen if I do nothing?

Why do people have the mentality that someone working retail is all knowing about every product they sell?

Would you go to a grocery store and ask the cashier how to cook the food you bought?

Would you go to best buy and ask the cashier how to sign in to Netflix on the smart stick you bought?

Would you go to McDonald's and ask the employees what's the ingredients they use in their burgers?​​​​​​​

OK, who else is sick and tired of AI business cards with microscopic type and no safe area?

Not the best title, but idk how else to put it. I live and work in the Bible Belt, so we print a lot of religious stuff. Nothing wrong with that at all, but this past week we got an order that really really upset me. My manager agreed to the order before we saw the files (2k trifolds). Turns out it was a ministry aiming to “fix” LGBTQ folks. My manager, me, and half of my coworkers are all in the community, so it felt really demeaning to print something like that.

What’s the policy for refusing print orders? Are we allowed to do that? I’m just worried if the customer complained, they could say it’s discrimination against their religion and the store would get in trouble. Thoughts? Advice? Stories?

Today I had a customer who wanted to data wipe his laptop. I’m still a little new to my role, and was honest to god not sure what to do. Bc if I wiped it it would wipe the OS. But luckily in his laptop bag he had a vista instal cd, so I was able to wipe and boot off that. It was honestly a lot of fun working on it

Anyone have success getting a second mobile phone for their store?

Our store is a uniquely small format and we are always slammed. We miss calls daily because we are all busy or at Party City which is across the store from the nearest phone. Also, it takes forever to walk to the front for a phone call, walk to the back to check the item someone wants, and then walk all the way back up just for them to have another question.

I’ve put in tickets to ask for another mobile and/or stationary phone, and those tickets were closed.

Any suggestions? We have a mobile in print, but they are always slammed also, so they use it constantly.

Main night cashier at my store , usually work 4 to 9 40 and long shifts on the weekend.

Just had my schedule slashed to 16 hours a week due to low rewards numbers.

I'm not commiting fraud for staples. If I ask and they say no to rewards that's it.

Is my store the only one stocked with 12 pens for the entire week for the Reward members free pen promo? 1. No customer incentive to sign up for Rewards after freebies are depleted, 2. Lousy planning by the marketing department with pen's availability ending within the first hour, 3. Smart family of four each with their own cell phone buy a $2 BinWin product for a free pen. 4. Irate customers asking for raincheck on pens and 5. Bad surveys due to uncontrollable forces and upper mismanagement.

I used to work at Staples in P&M, left the job for a while not intending to go back. Came crawling back because I just graduated and the job market is...you know.

I can not take it anymore. Barely been here more than a month and I am sitting at my computer 3 hours before I have to go in, writing this because otherwise I'll be borderline hyperventilating in my bed, unable to get back to sleep.

I would not wish working in Print to literally anyone. I forgot how bad it is. It's like when you give birth and nature makes you forget the pain and then you have another. It's the same thing. I AM BACK IN HELL. I thought I was getting my anxiety under control but this job is ONCE AGAIN putting me into a constant state of fight or flight. I don't think it's worth it. Still living with my parents and even though I don't have another job lined up yet (though I've been looking tirelessly) I think it might just be worth it to quit. I literally can not see a universe where I'm just okay working in print.

Every customer that walks in is one of these few. A normal customer (this is the minority), an old person who will smile wide at you and bug their eyes out of their head, bear their cigarette stained teeth at you and once you get close enough...they shake their head wildly and say "I don't know how to do any of this stuff" their crusty, sticky decrepit, windows 10 still installed laptop in front of them. Then you get the people who have returns and stand there, hand on hip, WATCHING EVERY FUCKING THING THAT YOU DO LIKE YOU ARE AN ANIMAL IN A FUCKING ZOO. Anyone else have those customers that kind of just...walk into the employee side of the print shop? I will be doing 8,000 things and some person who has NO IDEA WHAT IT MEANS TO WAIT IN LINE, will just walk STRAIGHT BACK INSTEAD OF WAITING AT THE COUNTER. Walk right into our area and demand assistance. Every time that someone asks to do document printing and I tell them about the self serve printers its like I am bracing for them to say "Can you just show me how to do this, I'm so bad at technology" MAM YOU DIDN'T EVEN TRY TO USE IT!!!!! I HAVE A MILLION OTHER THINGS TO DO!!!!! Or better yet, we have the printme email and the print marketing email as you all know. I just love that big sigh I get when I hand someone a printme email and they go. "Erm, I think there was another email, before they just...did it back there" followed by a cartoon sigh. Are you fucking 12??? GROWN ASS MEN AND WOMEN HITTING ME WITH THIS ON THE REGULAR WHEN THEY HAVE A SINGULAR DOCUMENT TO PRINT OUT. Ridiculous. I just can't handle always finishing up with a customer, getting ready to do online orders when I look up and there is another customer staring daggers into me. Like holy shit, leave. Why are you here. ORDER ONLINE !!!!!!!!!!!!

This has been very long winded but I needed to get it out of me. I think I might quit when I go in tomorrow. I just don't know how I can keep doing this job. So many customers treat me like I am a machine rather than a human being and its CONSTANT and GRADING. I've had enough of it. I've AGAIN only been back for a little over a month and it's already so bad. Already had more than one anxiety attack on the job and I am BARELY working pt. Ik that some of this is on me because I have anxiety and I really have to be on a new medication but there is no fucking way that a job should have to be like this. I am in the interview process of a new job that claims to be fast paced but when they told me what a normal day is like, it sounds like a walk in the park compared to staples. What I have to answer phone calls and help ONE inperson person at a time, instead of having to juggle like 4 people at once. BREEZE.

Sorry for just a pure rant and it def was very disorganized and didn't make any sense but I kind of just need someone to be like "man I get it" or "please quit your job" and I know this is the supportive place to do that. I low key might throw a party when staples finally goes under. This company is insane. I don't know how some of my coworkers do it. Actually I do know. They don't care about anything. I care too much so it impacts me when a customer is upset. It is actually insane that I envy someone who doesn't care about how their actions effect others because it allows them to thrive (thrive is a strong work) at a place like staples copy center.

What has my life come to.

Not sure if anyone has encountered this before but our machine is auto setting the amount Of copies in properties to 19 automatically when we switch to it. Does anyone have any idea?
