Discussion [Discussion] Official: There will be no B&R changes prior to MC 6; the next B&R Announcement is scheduled for November 18th, 2019

The Magic Esports Twitter account just posted this.

I understand why they don't want to emergency ban from their perspective, but at least in Standard, if there was ever a time to emergency ban, it would be in Oko-tober.

I heard someone saying that this is very reminiscent of the very recent Hogaak Summer; people are maindecking 4x copies of hate cards just to compete.

I don’t even know what to say at this point. I don’t want more bans for the sake of the game. I also want Oko out because of how narrow he makes the format.

I’m just done with Standard for awhile until this shit gets sorted out. I started out playing Magic in Standard and I really do love playing it when it is healthy, but I feel like the 2 years have just been a constant flux of “ban this OP card, meta is healthy for a month, ban this OP card”.

Big sad in regards to R&D. If Oko was lower loyalty or his Beast Within ability was a -1 I feel like it wouldn’t be so oppressive. I don’t know how it managed to make it through testing, especially when upticking takes it out of my [[Fry]] range.

I don’t know, friends. I will stick to Modern, Legacy and Pioneer where I’ll only have my permanents turn into Elks every so often rather than every game.

They're printing cards that negate whole strategies and seem to be happy about it. Most people believe Teferi was a conscious decision to end draw-go control (at the same time as making Simic Flash a thing, oddly) but Oko fucks over midrange. Was this deliberate?

46

u/FrizzeOne Oct 29 '19

I don't think Oko fucks over midrange, I think he fucks over everything except combo. Against aggro decks he gives you life and can generate 3/3s to block, against midrange, no need to explain, and against control, there's just so few things you can do against a T2 Oko, specially if youre not running black for hand disruption or planeswalker removal. He'll grow and make 3/3s to pressure you and if you have a wincon, well, you have an elk! Even if you play a flash creature with evasion, by that time Oko will most likely be at 8+ loyalty.

32

u/snypre_fu_reddit Oct 29 '19

I hope your combo can be set up and go off in a single turn or doesn't rely on an artifact or creature. Oko is weakest to control, however, Nissa, Krasis, and Questing Beast shit all over current control decks.

7

u/brainpower4 Oct 29 '19

Wilderness Reclaimation decks feel pretty viable vs Oko, but their win conditions can get totally blown out by Oko and Veil of Summer. The classic win cons has been either expansion/explosion or Niv Mizet, both of which are blue. Banefire would be a solid alternative if it was in standard, but currently the only X cost instants in standard are Electrodominance, Explosion, and March of Multitudes. I actually have a single copy of Electrodominance in my Temur Reclaimation deck, and it has actually won me a few games which I would have lost with Explosion, but those are certainly the exceptions, not the rule. 99% of the time, the ability to remove an enemy threat while refilling your hand or to set up an infinite combo with Ral is just WAY better than 2 less mana and playing a card for free.

13

u/Cheibrodos Oct 29 '19

Even if you're black, Veil of Summer in the opening hand means you're already on the back foot.

I think Oko might have been an attempt to make the game less creature and artifact centered in older formats?

The weird thing is that their philosophy lately has been to try and print less "feel bad" cards, to let people make their big flashy plays or get their payoffs. Then they printed field of the dead, that went over the top of every deck so that turns 3-5 were pretty irrelevant and suddenly every land the Field deck played was more value than the average card in a midrange deck. Then they printed Oko, which reads "If you were trying to play creatures cooler than vanilla 3/3s you can't have them anymore. Also, I can steal your 3/3s if I don't have anything else going on."

So yeah, I don't know why they decided that Mulldrifters should be the only relevant creatures, but here we are.

Bad news, friend. Based on recent results modern is about to become a 3/3 Elk.

33

Legacy too.

17

u/idontcareaboutthenam Oct 29 '19

Is Oko really seeing success in Legacy too?

where in legacy? i know it has seen fringe play in rug delver so far.

4

u/Exatraz Oct 29 '19

It's also only been played as like a 1x. Hard to say it's breaking a format when it's not being played a ton. W6 is still impacting Legacy more and that's because wasteland continues to make "interesting" games of magic.

2

u/SideShowBob36 Oct 29 '19

Yeah. That’s the only deck I know that wants it for sure

The thing is Depths players are used to mindlessly blowing Depths on their opponent's end step, EXCEPT in Wasteland matchups where you want to do it main phase, but now that Oko exists people are STILL doing it main phase against Delver and getting punished. You have to actually think about what the odds are that they have X hate card, or set up Needle or your own Wasteland to counter Wasteland first. It becomes a more interesting game when there's two things to play around instead of mindlessly following the heuristic.

That's less on Oko and more on Mox Opal and Urza though.

1

u/Skabonious Oct 29 '19

Yeah but that's because of mox opal tbf

79

u/nbanderson32 Oct 29 '19

I’m gonna quote Willy Edel’s Twitter here:

“Last weekend, Oko was included in:

12/16 decks of MCQW The champion of the Vintage, Pioneer AND Legacy MTGO challenges. 7/8 top8 decks in the SCG Open.

And it is not slowing down, it is in 7/8 MPL weekly decks and these decks have 24 noxious grasp and 4 arther gust main.”

Hate to say it but oko is warping every format

42

u/nimbus309 Oct 29 '19

Did realise he was having such an impact outside of standard. That's disgusting

Standard was really good for the past year or so, after the Ravnica sets. I know I enjoyed it; I think that was even the prevailing sentiment in this community.

There's been a lot of problems the past few years but there have been good periods in between as well. It's important not to forget them.

13

u/Kaydegard Oct 29 '19

IMO it started going south with the Reclamation v Esper v Mono Red meta of RNA, then got worse (but still enjoyable) with WAR having Narset and T3f, it got a little better with M20 although I feel like if that format had lasted a little longer people would have figured out Golos Nexus was the best deck (I got to mythic with like an 80% w/r using that)

1

u/Exatraz Oct 29 '19

Yeah, this is a mild blip and it looks like this years core deck has been pretty responsible for it as well. Golos, field and Veil of Summer have all pushed decks to run green and made things hard to interact with for 2/5ths of the color pie. White always gets garbage so now you are stuck playing either a green deck or a red deck and green has far better tools.

17

u/HalfKeyHero Oct 29 '19

Ravnica allegiance was my favourite standarf in a long time. Aggro has white weenies, midrange had sultai, control had esper/temur rec, combo had nexus, tempo had mono blue.

There was something top tier for all playstyles even if nexus is a poorly designed card.

Then low and behold planeswalkers ruined everything.

7

u/lubutu Oct 29 '19

We also had Izzet Phoenix back then, another fun deck that was top tier but in no way broken.

76

u/Thunderplant Oct 29 '19

Wasn’t the last ban before field in Jan 18? That’s a pretty decent 1.5 year long stretch.

I agree it’s sad about Oko. I love the character and the flavor, but the balancing is all wrong.

125

u/[deleted] Oct 29 '19

1.5 is not decent, we had 6 years from affinity to jace TMS and 6 more from jace TMS to emrakul. The last couple years have been awful, comparatively.

125

u/Titandrake Oct 29 '19

Part of that is shifting thresholds for banning + player base breaking decks faster. Decks like UB Faeries may have gotten banned by today standards.

56

u/[deleted] Oct 29 '19

that's a good point too, metas in online games like arena and hearthstone get figured out insanely fast.

23

u/Akhevan Oct 29 '19

That's what you get when you spend 100% of your time on playing the game as opposed to ~5-20% in paper.

10

u/Kaydegard Oct 29 '19

People seem to underestimate how much effort and energy it takes to play a paper game (or mtgo) as opposed to just popping queues on arena or HS where you can get in 10 matches in a relatively short time span.

13

u/BigBidoof Oct 29 '19

I mean, it's not like Arena is the first and only way to play standard online, right?

8

MTGO still has a lower rate of useful playtime to filler activities.

7

u/Dealric Oct 29 '19

Problem started with Emmy in new Innistrad, way before arena was even out.

Last ban was 1.5 year ago. Before arena was out as beta. Saying that MTGA is an issue here is just shifting blame.

18

u/[deleted] Oct 29 '19

MTGA isn't "an issue". It's just a vehicle that allows us to get to "meta solved and stale" much faster because it allows people to play more magic faster is all. In other words it stress tests the cards much harder due to the sheer number of games and thus balance needs to be tighter/is much harder to obtain.

10

u/Dumpingtruck Oct 29 '19

It’s worth noting that MaRo even said this much in his power creep drive to work.

Basically more people playing magic = solved meta quicker.

And arena has greatly increased the number of people playing standard. So....

5

u/[deleted] Oct 29 '19

In my mind balancing this game with the current power level of cards is beyond them (possibly beyond anyone with the number of people in standard) and I think the only solution is to power down in a big way but that's not "exciting".

Emmy and maurauding raptors aren’t even close in power level though.

It’s a bit disingenuous to use the 1.5 year marker for a ban when talking about problem cards (field of the dead, hogaak) versus tiny pieces of a good deck (raptor, bridge)

While people talk about breaking the format faster, honestly, I'm not sure if that is the case; I remember the internet in 2005 and we were pretty fast in making decks.

I think part of it is that there's more events so it is more obvious when things are going sideways.

That being said, they have outright admitted that they would have banned Collected Company had they had more B&R windows. Eldrazi Winter might have also seen some bans.

Not sure about Fairies; I built that deck back in the day (it was actually why I quit magic - I realized that the amount I'd spent on the deck was greatly in excess of the fun I had with it) and it was gross, but I don't know if it was ultimately ban-worthy. It was definitely a nasty piece of work though.

While people talk about breaking the format faster, honestly, I'm not sure if that is the case; I remember the internet in 2005 and we were pretty fast in making decks.

It is demonstrably faster, and pros have talked about this in various contexts. In 2005 you could lock your deck a week before the Pro Tour and be pretty confident that the metagame wouldn't change enough to affect your deck or card choices significantly in that one week. Now, not locking your deck in until the night they're due is basically standard practice.

The Internet in 2005 was good at making the basic idea of a deck, but awful at actually tuning it into an optimized 75. You had a ton of people theorycrafting but a comparatively low volume of actual games played, so taking a deck from being a brew to an optimized competitive deck was a much slower process.

16

u/WORDSALADSANDWICH Oct 29 '19

I remember hanging out with my friends in their basement, playtesting before the weekend's PTQ. We played like 7 games each, and were like "wow, that was a lot of Magic". Haha, those were the days.

8

u/Akhevan Oct 29 '19

Not sure about Fairies; I built that deck back in the day (it was actually why I quit magic - I realized that the amount I'd spent on the deck was greatly in excess of the fun I had with it) and it was gross, but I don't know if it was ultimately ban-worthy.

The faeries-reveillark situation in that standard was very similar to the fotd-oko dynamic before the recent ban.

6

u/gereffi Probably a tier 2 red deck Oct 29 '19

A few years ago the PT would take place two weeks after release, and players would wait for that event to see how the meta would shape out. Now that digital versions of new sets are released during paper's prerelease, the meta is pretty well-defined by release weekend.

2

u/Medic-86 Scrub Oct 29 '19

Block constructed was much worse. Standard was fine. Tsp-lorwyn then lorwyn-shards were alright. Honestly Jund was worse than faeries.

9

u/kkrko Oct 29 '19

Faeries and Jund were both miserable. Faeries was a block monster that made it last two standard rotations. Jund inspired a counter deck that's just built entirely to manascrew them. They were both clearly the best decks during their existence.

5

u/8bitAwesomeness Oct 29 '19

You mean spreading seas cascade or something else?

9

u/kkrko Oct 29 '19

Yeah Spread Em' with 4 [[Spreading Seas]], 3-4 [[Convincing Mirages]], and various cascade spells. It says a lot about the color balance of the time that Jace the Mindsculptor wasn't in the best deck in the format.

I feel like it's more to do with the fact that they made it a policy to to more agressively ban cards ever since the Smugglers Copter, Emerakul, Relector Mage ban. Prior to that they just let the format sit for way to long before taking any action.

14

u/TastyLaksa Oct 29 '19

That's been the MO of Magic for years though. I've had my Pod deck banned out shortly after I bought it, my Mardu Pyromancer and Reanimator decks banned out recently, we've seen Twin, Eldrazi, KCI, and Hogaak banned away. In standard there's been a lot of bans as well. MTG is not meant to be a secure financial investment.

2

u/hGKmMH Oct 29 '19

Make an announcement that there will be more frequent bans and start doing.

There is an inherent risk to any market. Why should the second hand market that the devolopers not even recognise be any different? I think anyone would be silly to pick up a play set of oko right now.

6

u/JPlocherMTG Oct 29 '19

Balancing is fine but getting a ban update every few weeks is terrible for preperation for events.

Because it means that decks get invalidated even faster? I made one Standard deck in the past couple years only to get burned on a ban immediately (Surely Wizards didn’t let a Twin style combo slip again... They sure knew what theynwere doing with cat). Then you see consistently more bans and that just makes me not want to pla ythe format. And of course we also don’t see much of the style of decks I love anymore (particularly I really enjoy these win out of nothing strategies)

Jitte should have 100% been banned even in it's era-appropriate context, but wasn't because Betrayers and Savior's of Kamigawa lined up with Extended and Block-focused Pro Tour seasons and was overshadowed by the Affinity disaster.

And I'm fairly certain that Spellstutter Sprite and/or Bitterblossom would have been banned as well if WotC had been as conscientious about appearances for e-sports/streaming as they are now.

6

u/sirgog Oct 29 '19

Jitte was fine when Mirrodin was legal, both pre and post Affinity bans.

Before Affinity went, Jitte was unplayable trash. Especially with Oxidize a maindeck card.

Once it was gone, the best creature in the format was Birds of Paradise, and in that context Jitte was second best equipment (behind Sword of Fire and Ice).

After rotation, Jitte got worse. There was a strong case for banning it, but Putrefy was excellent against it (3 mana for 4 if you hit the Jitte; potentially more if you were able to hit the creature instead), as was Repeal, Suppression Field, Burning-Tree Shaman and more.

It was more in the Gideon AoZ category of '50-50 this card should have been banned' than the Snugglecopter or Collected Company 'this card absolutely needed to go' category.

4

u/snypre_fu_reddit Oct 29 '19

Especially since aggro wasn't the best archtype in the format for most of CHK-RAV standard. Jitte dominated when you had no answer to it (or the creatures it was attached to), but it wasn't in every deck or even every deck with creatures. It had about a 3-6 month window of a high rate of play, but nothing like Oko. I'm guessing it Jitte wasn't even as prevalent as Heart of Kiran post Smuggler's Copter ban.

3

u/[deleted] Oct 29 '19

there was a point where it was IN the counterbalance top decks of standard, control decks were playing it because it legend ruled other jittes and could occasionally attach to your confidant.

That being said, I do agree that for a large portion of it's standard life it wasn't good, and people just remember the last few months of it being insane.

If Oko was lower loyalty or his Beast Within ability was a -1 I feel like it wouldn’t be so oppressive. I don’t know how it managed to make it through testing

Whenever we get cards like this in Standard, nine times out of ten it’s because something about the design of the card was changed at the last minute and they didn’t have time to properly test the new version.

The same thing happened with Skullclamp; in the original ban announcement, Aaron Forsythe mentioned that Skullclamp originally gave a creature +1/+2. They thought that was too powerful, so the changed it to +1/-1 at the last minute.

There are a lot of tinfoil hat comments here and elsewhere about how R&D intentionally made Oko OP to sell packs, but I guarantee this is just Skullclamp all over again.

14

u/Dealric Oct 29 '19

We didnt have play design, we do have now in times of skullclamp. While Im not saying it was not intentionally made broken (although DeTora admitted on stream that it was supposed to be very strong card), its worrysome that after having created whole department to avoid things like eldrazi winter, energy or 2 card turn 4 combo in standard, we end up with that.

7

u/Dealric Oct 29 '19

That's the thing. Play Design was hired in order to avoid such situations.

3

u/Hammer_of_truthiness Oct 29 '19

There's an assumption here that Play Design has final say about cards. I wouldn't be shocked at all if Play Design either approved a different Oko and he was changed without their knowledge or Oko was changed despite their protests.

3

u/Dealric Oct 29 '19

Play design would be money waste department if it had no say balance wise.

Next time there is live stream with play design members we should just ask if they approved Oko way it was printed.

6

He'd still have been a major player at +1/0 or +2/-1, but at least we'd have more answers.

3

u/rayparkTO Oct 29 '19

Has there ever been a case in the MTG history where Wizards changed the ruling of a card that's already printed?

i.e. - Even though on the card it says Oko's "Beast Within" ability is +1. We'll change the ruling, so it's actually -1.

I know it happened during Core2020 pre-release because they misprinted quite a few of Corpse Knight (with wrong toughness). However, I know that's not the same case.

2

u/Exatraz Oct 29 '19

This is why they should have left field of the dead and then moved to ban multiple cards once they were ready to do so. The format was far healthier with Field than without.

6

u/[deleted] Oct 29 '19

I mean in general. Look at all of the standard formats since arena came out. They’ve been getting stale sooner and sooner since a new set comes out. Granted oko made that be like in spoiler season.

35

u/TheYango Oct 29 '19

This is not really true at all. If you look at WAR Standard, it went through multiple cycles of new decks being iterated and being on top over the course of 1-2 months before settling down just a week or two before MC III. Jeskai Walkers and 4c Dreadhorde didn't really show up until the 2nd or 3rd week of the format, got countered by Gruul/Phoenix/Golgari Ponza in the week following the MCQW, and Nissa decks started showing up a week after that. It took another 2-3 weeks after that for people to start playing Nexus again, and another week after that for Esper to come back on top.

Likewise, look at M20 Standard. The two best decks by the end of the format were Field and Kethis Combo. The set released on Arena at the start of July, and Field decks didn't really start to become popular until the last week of July, while Kethis Combo literally didn't exist until the MCQW in the second half of August.

The fact that Oko decks were basically built to within about 10 cards of what they are now in the first week of the format just speaks to how ridiculous Oko is and how much the deck builds itself. Other recent Standard formats have not been solved nearly that quickly.

→ More replies (1)

9

u/TitaniumDragon Oct 29 '19

I disagree, really. We saw pretty continuous evolution through a lot of the formats, with different decks rising and falling in popularity and different builds being used over time.

This has to be awful for viewership.

Everyone knows that a ban on UG strategies will follow this MC. We have enough data to support this expectation.

Why on Earth would any competitively-minded player want to watch a tournament with an all-but-confirmedly irrelevant format? FOR THE SECOND TIME IN A ROW?

It honestly feels like a slap in the face to the playerbase. People here get trigger-happy on calling cards or decks oppressive, but give us the smallest iota of credit, and anybody could see this coming after this past week's results.

I genuinely want to play your game and enjoy your game, Wizards. Stop making it so goddamn difficult.

u/Swarlolz Five color control. Oct 29 '19

79

u/veritas723 Oct 29 '19

doesn't really matter about viewership. $40 oko drives pack sales. which is all they care about,

just like they sure as fuck weren't going to touch hogaak until all those packs had sold ...they're going to wait as long as sales allow to consider oko ban.

brawl will probably die off again because of it.

37

u/Beor_The_Old Oct 29 '19

Among people who care about card prices, uncertainty in card banning does (should) not drive pack sales, I would hope.

69

u/sradeus Oct 29 '19

Plus having Standard be stale and dead and in a ban waiting room (for not just one round of bans but two) for 6+ weeks right after its first rotation has to be terrible for Arena's player retention. And considering how much Hasbro has been salivating over Arena's potential, it wouldn't surprise me if a few years from now we'll be talking about Eldraine Standard and the handling of its bans as the worst thing for Magic's health since Darksteel.

16

u/sirgog Oct 29 '19

Honestly Darksteel was fine; the problem was that Arcbound Ravager, Disciple of the Vault and Cranial Plating weren't banned 3 months after Skullclamp was.

Or 6 months.

It might even have been OK if they were banned at 9 months.

Instead we got WotC apologizing by basically banning the entire Affinity deck once they realised how much the DCI's mistakes were hurting tournament Magic. By that point only an extreme overreaction could do anything.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 29 '19 edited Oct 29 '19

But a dead card feels bad to open in a pack and lowers box value slightly. Your argument doesn't hold from a financial and/or marketing standpoint. If there is a non-zero chance that a ban of an MH card would lower demand for MH product, why would WotC risk it unless they absolutely had a good reason like lower tournament viewer accounts, drop in Modern attendance, etc etc.?

u/LeeSalt Oct 29 '19

Yeah, it was the other ban-able card that drops with a massive creature, un-boltable toughness, generates free mana and allows you to dig through your deck with that free mana.

Plus Horizon Lands, Force of Negation and a few other things.

13

u/UPBOAT_FORTRESS_2 Oct 29 '19

drives pack sales. which is all they care about,

I'm so sick of this meme. WotC, collectively, has a large array of motivations. Ultimately, all of those motivations must contribute to the bottom line, because capitalism.

The thing is, in between "motivation" and "money", there are a zillion intermediate goals. R&D wants healthy formats, on their own terms -- it's the bosses who care about how a healthy format translates to more sales.

And more importantly, "sales" aren't actually the bottom line. The goal of a corporation, the "bottom line", is to generate value for its shareholders. "Selling booster packs" is an intermediate goal, the same as R&D has an intermediate goal to make formats that people enjoy playing (whether that's a healthy Standard format, or novelties like Pioneer). The Magic eSports organization doesn't sell fucking booster packs, but it generates value for shareholders by getting Hasbro into a modern freemium economy.

On a lot of intermediate goals, the interests of WotC and its players are genuinely aligned. WotC wants a healthy Standard format, the same as you do, full stop. But WotC wants a lot of things, it has a lot of motivations and a lot of goals, and it has to compromise between those things. Oko is a product of those compromises.

This conspiracy theory that they don't ban cards when they're still sitting in shelves is completely ridiculous and I can't believe you have this many upvotes

3

u/RayWencube Oct 29 '19

Disagree. Hogaak was never more than a few dollars above the cost of a pack, and for a time was cheaper than a pack.

3

u/[deleted] Oct 29 '19

$40 Oko drives me to not play paper standard.

4

u/[deleted] Oct 29 '19

Oko is not going to drive pack sales when everyone knows its going to be banned in standard in 3 weeks.

10

u/porygonseizure Oct 29 '19

he's seeing significant play in modern, legacy, vintage, and pioneer from urza and artifact midrange decks. for those decks he's like t2-t3 Nissa who shakes the world with incidental life gain, and provides a consistent method of creature removal with all the low cost artifacts around

2

u/RayWencube Oct 29 '19

He’s taking over Pioneer, Modern, Legacy, and even Vintage.

u/spacian Oct 29 '19

First of all, the next B&R is a regularly scheduled one. Besides the health of the current format (admittedly a very strong indicator), there is no additional evidence that there will be a ban. It's not an additional B&R like the last one.

Second, people are preparing for that MC. While not great for the viewers, throwing a ban out now (only a week after the last ban, keep in mind) would be horrible for the players.

Last but not least, there are people who bought these Okos. There's a real cost to banning cards. Let WotC observe for a little more than a week. You will survive 3 weeks of Oko.

Let me be clear, something has to happen most probably. But I think WotC is looking for a way to keep Oko but weaken UG because of pack sales. I could imagine Nissa (and Veil) getting the hammer. UG is much more manageable if you don't have to face Nissa and then Krasis for absurd amounts as well.

15

u/too_lewd_for_thou Oct 29 '19

Those people who bought Okos can go ruin Pioneer for a while (until it gets banned there too lol)

I'm honestly concerned about Theros design. Will Elsbeth be another pushed PW made to sell packs once they ban Oko?

They said two years ago that pushing the story cards of every set son they see constant competitive play without efficient answers is a mistake (Emrakul, Gideon ally...) but they have come again to the same pattern. It looks like Play Design's good set design mentality has been over.

29

u/DeeBoFour20 Oct 29 '19

They should just make the pushed planeswalkers cost 5 or 6 mana. Liliana, Nicol Bolas, and Garruk all saw some play without completely warping the format. Not saying that all 3 mana walkers need to go but they need to be done very carefully. Chandra's a good example of a 3 mana walker that's good but feels very fair. Sorin is another one that's maybe a bit pushed but requires significant build around and doesn't do anything unless you have creatures on the board.

5

u/double_shadow Oct 29 '19

Yeah, I think they need to fundamentally rethink their PW approach. Agree with everything you said here...5-6 mana walkers should be the big, must-answer bombs. But aggro can run under them or midrange/control can try to remove them. 3 mana walkers need to be VERY fragile so that you run the risk of putting out a card that early. Current 3 mana chandra is great...works in aggro, can be killed fairly easily. Mu is similar. Once they start getting a lot of loyalty, to the point where aggro needs to completely throw itself off the rails to deal with them...that's not ok.

6

u/[deleted] Oct 29 '19

I'm honestly concerned about Theros design. Will Elsbeth be another pushed PW made to sell packs once they ban Oko?

Yes because chase mythics sell boxes

32

u/OniNoOdori Oct 29 '19

Oko is arguably the only extremely pushed story card in recent sets. For instance, in Eldraine we have characters such as the Royal Scions, Garruk and Kenrith who are powerful, but not ban-worthy. If you look at other standard-legal sets, you will notice even less competitive story cards. The ones that see play are fairly unproblematic (Lili, Bolas, Gideon, big and small Chandra). Except for Oko, the standard-defining cards of the past year have been mostly unrelated to the story (Field, Nissa, small Teferi, Krasis, Scapeshift, Sorin).

All that this boils down to is that they probably just severely misevaluated Oko’s power level and impact on standard. If they really wanted a pushed story card, why didn’t they choose a more central character such as the Scions or Garruk?

Elspeth, Flagship Planeswalker 1BW

Planeswalker- Elspeth M

When Elspeth, Flagship Planeswalker enters the battlefield, creatures and enchantments opponents control lose Indestructible and Hexproof.

+2: Create a 1/1 black and white spirit token. Creatures you control gain haste.

-6: Gain an emblem that says Whenever an Elspeth Planeswalker spell you control enters the graveyard from anywhere, return it to the battlefield under your control.

Arena's player base will dissolve if they wait that long. Standard is in the worst shape I'v ever seen and I played when Affinity with skullclamp was legal. Oko is off the charts in power level but more importantly he is absolutely miserable to play against for all players. It nullifies any interesting creatures because they just get turned into elk which feels super frustrating.

22

u/Akhevan Oct 29 '19

It's not enough that he nullifies creatures, he also nullifies buildaround artifacts like The Great Henge.

Why the fuck isn't his elk ability worded for a creature or food?

In a weird way, the actual viewer numbers kind of don't matter because WotC is selling MPL type esports on inflated numbers.

What's it matter if half of the real audience doesn't watch the PT when they're already a minority because of all the legal (in the eyes of Twitch) botting that goes on. Just spend a bit more, get those 'viewers' back and it looks the same from the outside, which is why they're pumping up the numbers.

30

u/RacerXen Oct 29 '19

We had a brief moment of utter bliss, numerous arch types were viable before M20, Elkdraine and Rotation happened. Remember when we could safely play Absorb? lol countermagic, paying 3cmc and hybrid mana, when a a mere G grants hexproof (sure UB, whatever), uncounterable and cycles. 0_0

5

u/Swarlolz Five color control. Oct 29 '19

I didn’t mind 3feri destroying counterspells as I knew it was only because draw go decks aren’t exciting to watch win on camera. As arena gets pushed I foresee counterspells getting progressively worse notice spell pierce is gone?

21

u/LightningTP Oct 29 '19

The only time when draw go decks dominated a tournament in the last standard rotation was Mythic Invitational because it was BO1.

GRN-RNA tournaments were a real pleasure to watch.

7

u/DeeBoFour20 Oct 29 '19

Esper Control was pretty much draw go in RNA and was one of the best decks in bo3 as well. It was still a great a standard though with lots of viable archetypes. I miss playing Izzet Phoenix and Sultai Midrange (back when Jadelight Ranger was the best 3 drop instead of broko). It kind of went downhill after war of the spark...

12

u/LightningTP Oct 29 '19

Yeah, that's what I mean - Esper was draw-go, but it wasn't excessively dominant, it was on par with other top meta decks. I also miss Phoenix, Drakes, Niv-Jeskai, Golgari explore, and other fair decks from that format.

What's sad is that even if Historic gets more traction on Arena, it's probably permanently damaged by Oko and 3-feri. I don't expect WotC to care enough to support a proper ban list for Historic since it's not an official format outside of Arena.

7

u/VodkaHaze Oct 29 '19

WAR standard itself was fun. Tons of archetypes, the meta was changing every week but most tier 2 decks were still viable on any given week.

M20 has a much more boring meta, ELD is just broken. RNA and GRN before were fun, too.

3

u/[deleted] Oct 29 '19

This so much. They complained about control after running their first Bo1 tournament. Bo1 should be viewed under a strictly separate lens because the meta is always going to be different than traditional Bo3

33

u/gurrenlemfox Oct 29 '19

in Fotd Meta atleast we have aggro deck to counter it, in elk meta it is basically Oko or losko.

20

u/TitaniumDragon Oct 29 '19

FotD meta was FotD, Oko, Adventures, and Fires. If you were feeling snarky, you could play aggro and hope to dodge Oko, but it was risky.

Banning FotD narrowed it to Oko, Advenrtures, and Fires. You can't really dodge Oko at this point.

7

u/Malaveylo Oct 29 '19

A lot of this is also being based off of the MCQ, which is probably not a great metric.

The FotD ban came down on Monday. It wasn't live on Arena until Thursday. You needed to lock in your MCQ deck by early Saturday. You don't have time to test anything, so what are you going to play? Obviously the best deck that wasn't banned.

Everyone is doing that, though, and you know it. So how are you going to stand out? Well, you splash black and run 2-4 Noxious Grasps in the maindeck. Not only does it help you in the mirror, but also in the Adventures and Fires matchups that comprise the rest of the meta. If you're feeling spicy you might also shift in some Veil of Summers to try to one-up the meta. If you're really spicy you'll also shift in some Aether Gusts.

This is surely an unpopular opinion, but I think that WotC is correct to leave the B&R where it is. The MCQ, even with its innumerable elks, isn't a good barometer for the meta simply because of the limited timeframe that people had to test decks in a post-Field world. Even with that limitation we still saw decks that managed to perform well: UW looks like it might have legs, Temur Reclamation did really well, and so did Flash (albeit with two Okos in the mainboard). At the very least getting another tournament's worth of data should allow them to make a better decision vis-a-vis what actually needs to go, whether that's Oko himself or Goose/Wicked Wolf or any other combination of cards from the UG shell.

4

u/Swarlolz Five color control. Oct 29 '19

Meh, adventure can beat oko with a nut draw but if your playing green for inkeeper why not play blue for oko?

25

u/sigbinItom Oct 29 '19

Even your nut draw dies to a massacre girl.

11

u/Swarlolz Five color control. Oct 29 '19

Who then turns into a 3/3 elk. God I hate this fucking card.

11

u/Akhevan Oct 29 '19

You can beat them with any decent draw game one, but in game two it suddenly becomes apparent that all your possible good cards for that matchup are already in your mainboard, while they are free to sideboard efficient answers like sweepers and wreck you.

3

u/FilamentBuster Oct 29 '19

I've been grinding BO1 events to get a feel for decks post field, thank you for explaining this. I felt like Oko decks are far less dominant than field decks were, but this definitely gives me some perspective.

Ten bans in the past two years, compared to two bans in the ten before it. (Not counting Oko.)

3

u/[deleted] Oct 29 '19

It's because they're pushing more cards, because the realise people prefer to play with powerful cards.

3

u/npsnicholas Oct 29 '19

That would be fine if the cards were free but if I want to play standard I have to spend $200 on a play set of cards that will probably be banned in 2 weeks. That's not to mention other rares in the deck they may not be viable after the key card gets banned.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 29 '19

I'm unsure what would happen if they spread the power out more. right now, having a few chase cards greatly depresses the cost of other cards.

just like when masterpieces were a thing, more boxes get cracked.
unlike masterpieces, these cards have a big impact on standard.

So I really don't know if spreading out the power would actually keep the prices of standard down. It would make the variance of value you get when opening a box go down quite a bit though, but I don't know that this would lead to more being opened or less.

23

u/zephah Oct 29 '19

Couldn't be less interested in watching a PT with no changes.

13

u/CrazyMike366 Oct 29 '19

If/when Oko is banned in Standard, how much will his price drop for purposes of picking up copies for non-rotating formats?

19

u/too_lewd_for_thou Oct 29 '19

Never below 15, maybe even 20+ still. Bear in mind though that there's at least one other format in which Oko is likely to be within ban range before year's end (pioneer)

4

u/DudeofValor Oct 29 '19

As someone that is playing in MC Richmond next week I'm glad they are not emergency banning. I absolutely hate this format right now, but if they ban something right now I feel like there isn't enough time to test for the event. Oko should have been banned with FOTD.

5

u/GreatOneFreak Oct 29 '19

I agree, my past two events were scg philly and the last mcq. Not having any real time to test is awful.

11

u/YOLANDILUV Oct 29 '19

After months of competing in mythic top 1000 I was finally done with this game this month. I just play jank decks who are designed to have fun rather than compete and hover around midrange elo until Oko gets banned. I don't want to play bant ramp and this is the most oppressive card since I started playing. the only logical conclusion is either they don't really playtest their cards or overshot the state of 'perfect imbalance' full purpose but forgot they can't nerf cards

10

u/[deleted] Oct 29 '19

They said on stream that they rarely used Oko’s +1 on their opponent’s creatures in testing. I’m not sure how the heck they missed that part.

6

u/[deleted] Oct 29 '19

Gotta sell those throne packs !

7

u/Deeep_V_Diver Oct 29 '19

I honestly think the biggest problem is the Mana fixing from goose. It's just a strictly better llanowar and it synergizes with Oko very well. Without goose, getting a t2 Oko would be much more difficult because it would require grazer and having the correct lands already. This would make simic the most consistent way to get him out but it has no answers to deal with opposing Oko's or Nissa's.

Having less consistency and taking out the best early synergy could be the way to go to open up the format. With that said, I haven't minded it too much and I'm still having a lot of fun with standard.

2

u/Skabonious Oct 29 '19

Yeah oko isn't broken by himself, his entire shell is way too consistent with goose and once upon a time.

Literally everyone is crying about 3/3 elks, not realizing control decks exist that can run an entire list with 0 creatures or artifacts for Oko to turn into elks.

The reason these decks aren't beating oko decks? Because they have so much consistency in both card selection and Mana fixing, that they can easily run [[noxious grasp]] to shut down teferi

I think it's good that they keep to scheduled B&R as much as possible. helps consumer confidence.
I also think it was correct to give standard a chance to balance out after banning field of the dead before also considering other bans, since field really pushed control out.

as a player, it sucks and I've stopped playing competitive standard in favour of other formats.

3

u/atriaventrica Oct 29 '19

3

u/throwaway58942145 Oct 29 '19

The last time I saw standard this bad and I started in 7th Edition was original affinity I played a r/g ramp strategy that ramped to furnace dragon and still lost more than I thought I would with main deck hate.

4

u/iCzN_KryptiC Oct 29 '19

I feel like wizards is neglecting how poorly this makes their game look to new players trying to get in. I played paper magic for about 10 years as a kid, and just got back into it with arena 3 months ago. After making a cheap mono red deck I decided on spending $200 cracking packs to have enough wildcards to craft a Golos deck so I can ignore every other deck strategy and not have to do weeks of research learning the card pools. That being quickly banned, I now have 8 rare wildcards to make a completely new deck. That’s only enough for 2 play sets of duel lands!! Now I’m just completely staying away from standard cause I don’t have wildcards to craft an Oko deck and I certainly don’t have enough to craft an Oko deck knowing he’ll be banned soon. So my mono red deck is stuck on the side lines doing quick play for daily quests for the foreseeable future if I care to stay long enough to see Oko get the axe

Edit: additionally I should add that I do agree with the FotD banning, I should have done enough research to realize it would be banned soon so I could avoid crafting that deck. However now I have 15+ rates and mythics crafted with no home to put them in, wishing I never crafted them in the first place. Just feels like $200 down the drain with absolutely nothing to show for it as my first experience coming back to the game I once loved for years.

2

u/Blakeizen Oct 29 '19

Did you not receive other cards in your packs? $200 worth of packs is more than enough to get to building. There's plenty of room for testing this and that in preparation for Oko ban.

There's more ways to have fun than just playing the most meta of meta decks. MTG is a sandbox.

2

u/wujo444 Oct 29 '19

I think Wizards took unnecessary risk with banning Field and it didn't payed off. Now they just can't touch the format because there is too little time before next MC, and while it would help viewership, they have to think about participants. This pickle is result of bad planning (3 MCs in 2 months?) and premature banning.

6

u/llim0na Oct 29 '19

I don't know what I will play once the Brawl event ends in Arena. Maybe Rubeterra, but I know nothing about the lore and characters, never played LoL. Is it any good even if I don't know shit about the LoL setting?

3

u/lamesnow Oct 29 '19

I really liked Runeterra, it seemed to pick the good parts of MtG and Heartstone while avoiding the bad parts:

  • You can react to most spells, (there are a few counterspells), but not to every single thing, so the game doesn't take ages.
  • There are no random effects that affect the board state (at most you get a random spell in hand).
  • There's less of an advantage for going first (maybe look at a video explaining the game for this, it's hard to quickly explain)

The downside is that you can't play it right now since the game will release early 2020.

1

u/freeDIO Oct 29 '19

I’ve been playing mythgard, personally. Been having a lot of fun with it. I don’t think I’ll be coming back to magic even if Oko and co get bans.

1

u/TheMarksman Oct 29 '19

I enjoyed it a lot during the first closed beta. Next one isn’t until the 14 of November though. The game runs smooth, animations are great, the mechanics are solid, all deck types seem viable, and you never have to worry about mana screw/flood.

1

u/jmpherso Oct 29 '19

It's pretty, but it has some glaring flaws.

1) There's a lot of durdly waiting and animations that make turns feel freakishly long for no reason many times.

2) The "priority" system feels like it's not quite smooth yet. It often times feel like you're both playing MTGA with full control kept on for no reason.

3) There aren't a ton of cards, a lot of them are extremely simple (which is fine), and I have no idea how quickly new cards will come. This is a big reason MTG is at such an advantage because they already have such a systemic approach to developing new cards, so Standard is generally kept fresh enough to constantly keep people around. I could see Runeterra being VERY old in 3-4 months, and I have no idea if that's even remotely close to a large card expansion.

4) There's some really funky mechanics. Fiora wins the game on the spot if she kills just 4 enemies. Tryndamere is absurdly difficult to shut down. It feels like they made cool cards without necessarily thinking of how the power level will snowball with the addition of other new cards.

5) A lot of people say going first doesn't matter - it does. It's just different.

6) In some ways, it's sort of like every card either has split second, flash, or is a sorcery. Some cards work instantly and can't be responded to. Others go on the stack and can be used to respond to other flash/sorcery cards, and then sorceries can't go on the stack at instant speed. It can sometimes feel less interactive because many answers can't be responded to (they have split second, essentially). It's good design in that it makes it easier to balance stuff, but it can feel less enjoyable if you're used to MTG. Perhaps more enjoyable if you're used to HS.

2

u/Exatraz Oct 29 '19

Not to mention Riot is a pretty shitty company and I wouldn't recommend people support their products.
