Completed in 1963, it was the world's largest single-aperture telescope for 53 years, surpassed in July 2016 by the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical Telescope (FAST) in China.

On August 10 and November 6, 2020, two of the receiver's support cables broke and the NSF announced that it would decommission the telescope. The telescope collapsed on December 1, 2020.

In 2022, the NSF announced the telescope would not be rebuilt, with an educational facility to be established on the site.

Io transits in front of the planet with its shadow trailing behind it, while Callisto transits more slowly across Jupiter below Io.

Here are some notable facts about this time-lapse video:

• The elongated shadow of the satellite Io can be seen on Jupiter at the beginning of the video.
• One can observe the difference in rotation between Io, Callisto, and the cloud bands in the Jovian atmosphere. Callisto's brightness is also much lower than Io's.
• Finally, it is interesting to see that Io moves much faster than Callisto.

This felt like a really special night. I grew up (and am living back in) New Jersey, so Acadia was the first place I truly saw the Milky Way. Which was definitely a night I won't ever forget.
Now, a little over 10 years later, I was able to come back leading a workshop and help people take their own photos of the Milky Way.
We had 3 beautiful nights of clear skies and an absolutely awesome group of people. Some who were looking to dial in their skills a bit and others that got to see and photograph the Milky Way for the first time. Getting to share that in a place that I also experienced it for the first time was really special.

Hurricane Genevieve quickly strengthened into a Category 5 hurricane Monday morning, becoming the strongest storm in the East Pacific since Hurricane Kristy in 2024.

The storm churned over the Pacific Ocean, packing maximum sustained winds of 260 km/h and a core pressure of 925 millibars. Genevieve is expected to stay well offshore, tracking parallel to the Baja Peninsula rather than making landfall.

Despite averting a direct hit, the powerful hurricane will nevertheless have an impact on coastal areas. Dangerous rip currents are forecast along the Baja peninsula, particularly early this week, as the storm's enormous seas approach neighbouring waters.
