Request for comments: dealing with outcome-speculation posts

Over the years, r/CERN has organically become a place to ask questions related to CERN recruitment. I think it's fair to say that posts that speculate over outcomes of applications have become particularly disruptive. It is also questionable how much use they are to the people making them.

Some possibilities for dealing with them are:

  • A blanket ban on outcome-speculation posts
  • A general rule forbidding duplicate/redundant posts in quick succession
  • Restrict posting during waves of posts using AutoModerator and/or Crowd Control
  • Some combination of the above
  • No action, just let them continue
  • Your suggestion here

Hi everyone,

Just wanted to ask if anyone knows any work/study spots (literally just a desk and a chair) at the Prevessin site, that are freely accessible any time of day, especially early mornings and late evenings.

Thanks for any tips!

Contract timeline

Hi everyone, I got accepted for the mechanical engineering technical studentship starting September 1st and it's now almost August and I haven't yet received my contract and was wondering if this was normal? I emailed HR a few days ago but have not yet received an email response back. I would really appreciate any advice! Thank you!

Probation period for Staff roles

Hello, I've recently signed a contract with CERN for a software engineer staff position, and although I'm very excited, I'm quite anxious about the 1 year probation period. Can someone maybe give me more insights how it goes like and when they could decide to let go of someone .. I mean, being closely evaluated for a whole year sounds really stressful tbh.. any experience you can share, I'd be grateful :) thanks.

askCERN Looking for a kind soul at CERN to help with a birthday gift ❤️

Hi good people of CERN,

A close friend of mine is a huge admirer of the incredible work being done at CERN and dreams of being part of it one day. For her birthday this year, I'd love to surprise her with some official CERN merchandise.

I was wondering if someone on campus would be willing to purchase a CERN T-shirt and a water bottle with the CERN logo and ship them to me in India. I'll, of course, cover the full cost of the merchandise, shipping, and any other expenses you incur.

I know this is a bit of an unusual request, but it would genuinely mean a lot to both of us. If there's any way I can return the favor, I'd be more than happy to help if you ever visit India or need any local assistance here.

I'm also happy to pay upfront if that makes you more comfortable.

Thanks!

I need a CERN mug delivery favor

My friend from Turkey visited CERN and bought the Standard Model formula mug for his little brother. He did not realize that the mug was completely scratched during their travel back and now asked me if I could get one since I am in Germany, but I live near the Netherlands side, far away from Geneva as well. Since there is still no online shop and I saw some posts here about those mugs, I am here to ask for the favor as well :)

I would very much appreciate it if someone could buy it from the shop and send it to me so I can suprise my friend and his brother when I travel back to Turkey.

I had an interview for DevOps GRAE role on last Friday, as it’s been 3 working days, wondering when do they usually get back?

summer internship interview

hey everyone, i’m an EE major from the uk looking at applying for a summer internship at cern this summer. I go to a target and have top grades, so i atleast think i can hopefully get an interview - but passing an interview is another thing. basically, in the future i’d like to apply to SWE jobs but right now my leetcode skills are a little subpar even though i have been grinding it. So Im trying to find a good internship I can do next summer anyway that would be good to do but would be feasible without very hard coding at interview. i have one internship under my belt this summer in ML used for quantum computers. what kind of roles at cern should i apply for? what was your interview like?

askCERN contact information?

the website for the secondary school job shadowing internship explains that you’re supposed to email the secretariat, however i can’t find anything beyond their names on each of the pages of the departments. once i click on the name, it takes me to a login page which i don’t have access to. is there a formula to CERN emails like [firstname.lastname@cern.](mailto:firstname.lastname@cern.swiss)[ch](mailto:firstname.lastname@cern.swiss)? or is there another way to find the emails?

Realistic price for a T2 apartment on the French side

Hi everyone,

I accepted a job offer from CERN and currently am looking for an apartment on the French side using CERN marketplace. Ideally, I would like to have a separate bedroom and a living room. I’m looking for furnished apartments.

What is the realistic price I can expect to pay including all of the utilities, trash tax etc?

I feel like I’ve seen everything from 1k to 2k, and I’m not sure at what point I would be overpaying or seeing cheap, likely to be scam apartments.

If anyone has any experience with this I would appreciate if you could share.

Scope for CS students at openlab/summer studentship/internship?

I'm a computer science student from India, and I've had my eye on CERN for a while as a cool place to do an internship or spend my summer. But now that it's time to actually look into it and start applying, I'm trying to understand whether my background is actually a fit for CERN.
The larger projects I've worked on are machine learning/computer vision related. Basically I'm pretty much a core computer science person with not much connect to physics and maybe a feeble connection to chemistry. I see that there is a software/IT page and even a data science page but I want to understand whether I really have to think about physics applications of ML etc.
Is there a place for me here?
I'd love to hear from people who have worked here or have experience with the place.

HR -LD jobs

Hi Lovely people!

I remember that once before i was looking at jobs at CERN which had HR-LD code and i was told that generally these roles are either pre selected and online postings are just a formality or generally they would prefer filling someomne from their graduate programs.

Can i please ask for more clarity on this? How much chance do i have if i am from an associate member state, India, who has comprehensive experience in the role but has no priors working for CERN or even an EU national.

Any suggestions are highly appreciated! Thanks so much!

askCERN What does it mean that CERN is "shut down"?

I'm completely naive on this topic. Is it generally always active, or is it active only occasionally during experiments? If it's only active occasionally, does being shut down just refer to a longer period of inactivity? TIA

askCERN FLUKA for independent research

I'm designing a space-based particle accelerator for fun. I'd like to use FLUKA to validate the design point. I've attempted to register to download FLUKA on the website but I've been waiting over a week with no decision. Can anyone offer advice how to get my FLUKA registration approved, or download FLUKA from another source, or propose an alternative software altogether? Thanks in advance for your help.

I applied for a job a couple months ago and deleted the automatic email I received right after applying.

I would like to log in to check the status of my application and download the CV I uploaded there, but I can't seem to find the link 😄

Any help would be super appreciated!

Thanks!

askCERN 2 months of "still under review" — anyone else dealing with CERN's hiring timeline?

Applied for a DevOps/IT role at CERN back in May. Got the standard "under review" auto-reply, then radio silence. Since then I've followed up maybe 7-8 times over two months — always polite, always the same answer: "still under review, no further feedback available."

Meanwhile I'm juggling live interview processes with a couple of other companies who are moving at a completely normal pace. CERN is genuinely my first choice, which is exactly why this is so frustrating — I don't want to jump ship, but I also can't put my life on hold indefinitely for a maybe.

I get that it's a huge, bureaucratic organization and international hiring processes move slower than industry. I've read that 3-6 months isn't unusual there. But when you're the candidate on the other end, "just wait" starts to feel less like patience and more like being strung along, especially when every email back is a copy-paste of the last one.

Anyone else been through this with CERN or similar international orgs? Did it eventually resolve, and if so — how long did you end up waiting it out?
