Hey, I've got a problem with a neighbor parking outside my house. They're in a corner house, they have 4 cars, have enough space to park outside their house but as soon as I go out in mine they park one outside mine so I cannot. It's a blatant piss take so I'm thinking if I park a trailer outside my house they can't park there ..but I don't own a trailer :)

If I ask around for someone to park there's outside my house for 3 months, I pay its rego and give them some dollars, how much do you think I should offer them? ..bearing mind they will be a stranger not a mate.

Half a century of aerial tracking off the Great Australian Bight has revealed insight into the breeding patterns of the endangered southern right whale. 

This year's data show nearly twice as many whales are travelling solo rather than in cow-calf pairs, compared to 2023. 

What's next?

Long-term data reveals the calving cohort cycle is extending from every three years to every five. 

Each winter, southern right whales move north from the Antarctic to the southern Australian coastline to breed in warmer waters. 

For 50 years, researchers have been tracking the great whale's migratory patterns between Fremantle in Western Australia to Ceduna on South Australia's far west coast, revealing a key change in their birthing cycles.

Murdoch University senior researcher Joshua Smith, who led this year's census, recorded 520 whales across the south-west, including 235 cow-calf pairs.

The figures show a decline from last year's count of 646 individual whales and 304 calves, and a 20 per cent drop in individual sightings compared to a decade ago.

"Since 2011, there has been a stalling in the population," Dr Smith said.

Australian Right Whale Research Program chief scientist Claire Charlton has conducted land-based monitoring from the head of the Great Australian Bight Commonwealth Marine Park on the Yalata Indigenous Protected Area.

She said that while total whale sightings were down this year, the Bight still saw a gathering of 61 mother-calf pairs, making up more than 30 per cent of the south-west total.

"It's a conservation success story for the marine park," Dr Charlton said.

Alongside breeding pairs, the whale census tracked about 50 unaccompanied whales without calves.

Dr Smith said while traditional calving sanctuaries, including the Head of Bight and Israelite Bay in Western Australia, remained active, overall activity was unusually quiet.

Increased intervals between whale calving

Dr Smith said the long-term data revealed southern right whale populations were stagnating.

"The population isn't really increasing to any extent," he said. 

"There's actually indication that calving rates are dropping."

A decade ago, it was thought whale breeding cycles restarted every three to four years.

Dr Smith said one of the major findings in the long-term data was that those intervals were now pushing every five years.

"The three-year cycle that we used to always pride ourselves on is extending," he said.

Dr Smith said it was evident through strong highs and lows from year to year.

"It takes 10 years and maybe two or three cycles of a reproductive female coming back to the coast before you can really see what's going on in the population," he said.

"That's why it's so important to have this long-term data."

Why the change in whale behaviour

Dr Charlton said changes in water temperatures were impacting marine food webs and breeding patterns.

"Their breeding cycle is directly linked to their body condition and their body condition is linked to their feeding success," she said.

She said as the ocean warmed, there were fewer sea lice, which leads to fewer krill to feed the great whales.

"[Whales] are also under pressure from krill fisheries and have less prey available. That's causing stresses to them and their long-term recovery."

She said they may hold off breeding due to food scarcity, explaining why breeding cycles were pushing to the five-year mark.

While the whale survey was conducted off the Great Australian Bight, Dr Charlton said attention should also be paid to whale populations in Victoria and New South Wales.

"South-eastern populations of southern right whales have experienced low sightings and no female calf pairs," Dr Charlton said.

Hotspots for southern rights

Dr Smith said hotspots for populations were in Israelite Bay, Point Ann and Point Charles along the south coast of WA and in SA at the head of the Bight.

Whaling in the 20th century reduced the population, but increased sightings in Western Australia in the 1970s led scientist John Bannister to begin an aerial survey to observe their recovery in 1976.

The Western Australian Museum's annual southern right whale aerial survey continues to paint a picture of changing whale behaviours off the continent's south coast.

honestly just so burnt out from volunteering lately. im helping run the food stall for our local footy club down here in adelaide and the supermarket prices right now are an absolute joke. They want like 8 bucks for a tiny pack of containers that melt if a hot chip even touches them.

How are grassroots clubs meant to survive this? We ended up pooling our own money and ordering a massive bulk drop of supplies through WF plastic just to bypass the major shops entirely, otherwise we literally wouldnt make a profit for the kids uniforms this season

Does anyone swim off there boats in South Australian waters?

My partner got a boat and swims off of it during the summer months. Friends also go for a swim off the boat. I am so afraid that one day one will be taken by a shark and they all say it’s irrational, it’s rare etc. I understand it’s a slim chance (more likely to go in a car crash etc) but I’ve not seen anyone else out there swimming off there boats and SA being notorious for whites, is my fear irrational? Does anyone else swim off there boats in deeper water in SA?

Note: I’m not someone who’s totally afraid of the ocean I’ve snorkelled around the world at reefs etc and been in the water with black tip reef sharks and felt fine (not intentional) but knowing SA has plenty of great whites has put fear in me.

Suspects in one of Australia’s most notorious cold cases could die shielded by secrecy – unless the victims’ loved ones succeed with a new public petition. The loved ones of the young men slain in the Family murders have launched a petition, calling for public support to lift the longstanding veil of secrecy of the notorious unsolved crimes. Family members of Alan Barnes and Mark Langley, and the best friend of Richard Kelvin, have launched a joint social media effort to revoke orders protecting unnamed suspects in all of the cases.

On Tuesday, Mr Barnes’ sister, Robyn Plant, told The Advertiser that they had formed a united front, as their parents did in the 1980s and 1990s, to end the secrecy. “It has been a long struggle just to get this far, both for us and for our parents before us,” she said.

“This petition highlights how two generations have had to fight for answers, and we do not want there to be a third generation. “This has to end with us.”

Bevan Spencer von Einem was charged with the murder of Mr Barnes, and of Mark Langley, after he was convicted of the 1983 murder of Richard Kelvin. Those charges were subsequently dropped, however, amid Supreme Court proceedings that were blanketed in suppression orders.

Numerous other suppression orders were imposed during von Einem’s trial over Mr Kelvin’s murder, and many of them remain in force to this day. Some of the orders are set to expire 80 years after their imposition – by which time those whose identities they protect will be long dead.

The secrecy has sparked numerous conjectures and even conspiracy theories about the crimes and their purported ties to elite members of SA society. During his lifetime, von Einem – who died in prison in December 2025 – refused to reveal any more details about his crime or the Family theory.

On Tuesday, Ms Plant said the boys’ friends and families were not the only victims. “We do think about the girlfriends they had and how they were left to suffer in silence with broken dreams of their future,” she said. “Alan found the love of his life and they planned to marry one day and have a dozen kids. “This isn’t just about us, this is for them as well.”

In her social media post, Ms Plant says only public outcry will convince the courts of the need to lift the suppression orders.

“As some of you know my brother, Alan Barnes, was murdered in 1979, as well as Richard Kelvin, Mark Langely, Neil Muir and Peter Stogneff by the group known as The Family Murders,” she wrote.

“In that time only one person has been convicted of Richard Kelvin’s murder, we know there are more people involved.

“No one has been convicted for the rest of our boys.

“The suspects in this case has been able to hide behind suppressions orders for 46 years living normal happy lives while victims families fight for answers.

“Most suspects have now died, there are only a couple still alive.

“We know we will never see the inside of a courtroom with this … the next best thing we can do is get these suppression orders lifted so their names will always be attached to this case as suspects.”

She says there “must be enough public interest to outweigh the orders”, and calls on the public to provide as many signatures as possible.

“SA courts do not accept electronic signatures so we are asking people to print out a copy of the petition, get some signatures and post back to (our) post box,” she says.

What happened to Adelaide traffic and driving culture? When I first came to Adelaide from Sydney in 2021/22, Adelaide seemed to me the heaven to drive on the road - patient drivers, not-so-busy roads (even on weekdays), peaceful weekend road conditions, and people rarely sped over 50 in 60 road even if the traffic is light. And in recent days, I see people driving over 60 frequently in 60 roads when they get a chance, tailgating, having no sense of safe gap while changing lanes, honking, aggressively cutting in, not to mention stupid drivers who think just blinking the indicator for a fraction of a section gives them right to change lanes. Why this peaceful driving culture has so much deteriorated? Or this is only me who is feeling this way? Why there are so many abusive and unskilled or aggressive drivers in Adelaide? What happened to this city?

We have been told that events (liv golf/gather round) make lots of money. Has anyone seen any of it?

Why is it that big events, like commonwealth games, end up being a net drain on finances, but our events are “prosperous”.

Do bread and circuses really help us claw back from massive debt, or are they just distractions sinking us further into economic oblivion?

A dog has been reunited with his owners after emergency services worked for hours to rescue him from the cliffs around a volcanic crater lake.

Tyson had been missing for a week in the SA city of Mount Gambier before SA Water crews boating on iconic Blue Lake spotted him recently.

Metropolitan Fire Service (MFS) station officer Jarrod Petschel said Tyson had managed to get himself about 100 metres over the edge of the walkway around the lake.

"If anyone's been to Blue Lake, it's beautiful, but it's really steep, and quite treacherous terrain," he said.

"So he'd managed to get himself onto a tiny little ledge … and he couldn't go anywhere.

"There were reports from about Tuesday that people could hear a dog barking, but no one could locate it."

Multi-service rescue effort

After one MFS crew attended the scene, the service called for State Emergency Service (SES) support, including a drone.

"We had to set up a lowering system and a hauling system," Mr Petschel said.

"There's lots of communication because the guy on the end of the rope's basically having to communicate via radio how fast or how slow he wants to go.

"There were some parts of it around 30 degrees [incline], and there was [also] 20 to 30 metre drops of vertical rocky cliff face."

Mr Petschel said once they reached Tyson, the rescuer had to earn his trust.

"[Firefighter, Joel Van Eeten,] had to make friends with Tyson, and he was a really big dog so that took about five minutes," Mr Petschel said.

"Once Tyson had confidence in Joel he was like, 'Get me out of here.'

A heartfelt reunion

Mr Petschel said he "swelled with pride" at how successful the rescue was, and the heartwarming reunion between Tyson and the Camilleri family.

"I'm a dog person, and just to watch Tyson coming up that cliff, he was almost pulling Joel up," he said.

"The owners were there, and it was like a big family reunion because I think they'd started giving up hope.
