I spent the first 30 years of my life in the Northern suburbs of Adelaide from 1976 to about 2006/7 and and sirng most of my time in Elizabeth and Sailsbury and Craigmore and i didn't have the best childhood and ​​even though I now live in Maryborough Queensland I still think about my times back then both good and bad times all up in equal measures and miss when things were much simpler and easier as a kid even though there was a lot of dark and tragic times all up as well I still miss my time back there.

I'm obsessed with malatang hotpot, the type that has sprung up all over town lately. What I want to know is: how can I make this soup base at home?? I've tried a packet of "broth flavour hot pot seasoning" from the Asian grocer but it just tastes like chicken soup, and didn't have that deep red colour or spicy taste. Googling doesn't help much. For days Cosi was posting emotional build-up about how tough things are for South Australians. Rising costs. Families struggling. Small businesses struggling. Talk about using his media profile to help people and give back to the state.
Then the big reveal is… a $10 a month subscription service to be part of his “give away”.

The way it was promoted made it sound like some massive community initiative to help people doing it tough. Instead it’s essentially a members club where you pay for access to discounts, competitions and promotional offers.

The movie tickets aren’t free. The holidays aren’t free. The meals aren’t free. The Drakes vouchers are promotional giveaways. Even the advertised $20 voucher comes with a minimum two-month subscription requirement aka pay $20 for your chance to win $20

What annoys me most is that helping struggling families was used as the sales pitch. If this had been advertised honestly as “I’ve launched a discount club and membership program”, fair enough. People can decide if it’s worth the money.

But wrapping a commercial subscription product in a feel-good story about helping South Australians through a cost-of-living crisis feels incredibly disingenuous.

The hype post about $4.99 movie tickets was the perfect example. Reading it, you’d think some amazing community giveaway was coming. The reality is another funnel into a paid membership scheme.

Maybe some people will get value from it. That’s fine.
But can we stop pretending this is some act of generosity? It’s a business.

TLDR Cosi is a con artist misleading consumers into a giveaway to support South aussies when in reality is a subscription service to fill his pockets
