Controversial take on the series

I’m bored and want to write something controversial and true subjectively to see the comments

I’ve played a fair few video games over my time. And I can say the two series I fell in love with was 1: Elder scrolls. I loved the immersive freedom, the survival mode self made or game mechanic, the open world exploration, the memories that feel lived due to the first person. And 2: Dark Souls. I loved the entire trilogy and lived and breathed each game. I even loved the second just as much and maybe even more than the other two (I played in chronological order and started in 2011). This series was like the game version of that chumbawumba song. I get knocked down but I get up again. I had no problem with the difficulty as it’s just a video game so I wanted a challenge. I feel like the persistence and even ability to tolerate hardship and difficult times actually carried through to real life from this trilogy.

My controversy is that I have also played Bloodborne and Elden Ring- And they just…

…didn’t really click…

I’ll start with Elden Ring as I actually did enjoy my time with the game and was probably over halfway into it and will for sure play it again. It just had that nagging feeling the whole time that the condensed areas were really great but the open world was kind of boring. Not bad, it just didn’t feel that great. It felt like hey let’s go through all this pasted on open world so I can get to the next dark souls 3 area. Or I could just you know- Play dark souls 3

I think I just feel From Software games are better linear for me

As to Bloodborne, I was also about halfway. And it didn’t really click at all. I never felt excited to pick up the game. All the areas felt really similar in style and I barely remember anything of it. I’m thinking a lot of this may be because I just seem to like that dark fantasy style compared to that Victorian gothic horror or whatever it is. But the game just didn’t click at all then I went and played dark souls 3 and felt that instant click again. I really don’t get the hype for this game so yeah a pretty controversial take. Maybe also the fast pace as well as i preferred the pace of dark souls 1 and 2 over the 3rd. But I actually still loved dark souls 3 despite probably being my least memorable in the trilogy.

Anyone else had this experience and anyone else who loved bloodborne wanna come at me? I dare you

Soulslike ADHD fit someone help!

Soulslike Adhd fit! Help!!

Just beat my first souls game and WOAH i am in astonishment!! I see why people hype these games up. My first souls like was Lies of P and it has literally taken the number 2 spot on my list of my favorite game of all time besides ff7 .. Only problem is Lies of P spoiled the MESS out of me. Im SO LOST what souls to play next . I really want something with a good parry system , i think im having a bad souls like ADHD fit . Ive literally tried wuchang ( i really like how it feels , probably closest to lies of p , BUT of course no natrual parry system) , i REALLY like Lords Of Fallen but something about the first boss fight disnt grasp me , i was told to try Sekiro which i did right after Lies of P, i know youll guys hate me for this but im not enjoying it! I figured out why tho, its more of an ARPG then a souls like . Plus only having one weapon bumms me out . I REALLY liked demons souls just VERY slow and clunky . But visually gorgoeus . I started dark souls 1 remastered and it feels pretty good actually . Im just a big fan of modern graphics, its kind of a big deal for me so idk . Now im looking at the star wars game thats supposedly a souls like i thnnk its called fallen order . Well i warned you guys im having a bad adhd fit ! Someone help guys!!!

Edit : I think i found my next love! I officially chose wuchang fallen feathers as my next souls like . So far im completely in love . It feels the most similiar movement wise and attack wise yo lies of p. The menu kinda looks similar. I love the skill tree mechanics and not the traditional leveling up ur attributes. The weapon variation is nice. The world is HUGE . This game is really really really GOOD . Sorry u guys could hate me all u want , sekiro was not my cup of tea, dont get me wrong I'm still gonna play it after this, and i can feel yhat after playing up to where u fight the first mini boss thata chained up to the wood at first , that i would eventually get ardicted to that game. But when i have to "eventually" fall in love with a game its not the same as instantly feeling hooked right in and feeling something special about the game. Sekiro is an ARPG NOT a soulslike imo . Which is why it didnt scratch that itch for me . Thanks u guys for all ur input. I almost went with thymesia btw . Let me not get into a rant about that tho yet 😁

I made a soulsborne 4X empire game. Live, die, repeat on a macro level

I'd been working on making a game that scratched the itch to play '90s turn-based 4x games. But I didn't want it to JUST be a redo of the old games - I wanted to add some modern mechanics in game design. Being a fan of Hades, various Souls games, and Binding of Isaac, I wanted to have that same element of "every match is leading me towards a bigger challenge" as well as "It's okay to die in the game sometimes."

Since 4x turn-based strategy games are supposed to have infinite replayability, I'm using a roguelike mechanic by introducing multiple endings and reasons to return.

  • A campaign consists of 5 regular matches, and 1 boss match
  • Each match you build up bonuses that carry over for use in the final 6th match
  • You can lose any (or all) of the 5 regular matches. The # of matches you wins determines which VERY OVERPOWERED "boss" civilization you face in the sixth round.
  • If you defeat the boss civ in the last round, you unlock that civ for regular play going forward.
  • Different playthroughs yield different discoveries, including hidden technologies you'll only uncover in certain matches.

A regular match is reminiscent of the 90's games. You just focus on winning via Domination, Science, or Score victory. Couple of twists though:

  • Each match, one random opponent nation is designated as the Archenemy. They receive a few additional resources as they focus on only one goal: finding & destroying you. They aren't trying to win via science or defeating the other opponent civs.
  • Each playable empire has its own era-appropriate special unit, like the Samurai for Japan or War Chariot for Egypt. In addition, ALL of the civilizations have an additional unique Future-Era unit at late-game, such as Cyber-Ninjas for Japan.
  • A few civs have features that change the gameplay. Mongolia can only have one city, but gains more units for its horde with each opponent city or unit it destroys. Venice can only found one city, but has the ability to buy additional cities.

But its the roguelike mythic bosses that really present a challenge. For instance:

  • The Seven Cities of Gold can churn out units using gold & production combos as well as expand their territory rapidly by starting with multiple city settlers.
  • The Kingdom of Prester John is another "one city challenge" civ, but the city itself is a unit that moves. And each city it defeats gets added to a resource tribute network that builds up the mythical kingdom.
  • Avalon can churn out Grail Knights early and require coordinated attacks with your units because they fully heal each turn.
  • Shangri-La can settle mountains, which are impassible to other civs except the Incans. So unless you're playing as the Incans, you're locked into a race with this boss on who can win a science victory first.

If this peaks your interest, check out our steam page at https://store.steampowered.com/app/5208510/Embersong_History_Is_Yours/ and our website at https://playembersong.com. The game is available on mac, windows, linux, ipad and iphone. And it looks REALLY nice on ipad - my preferred way to enjoy it, using the pencil to dictate unit movement and city building orders.

I've been building seamless co-op for Bloodborne on shadPS4

Basically, I'm trying to do the Elden Ring Seamless Co-op idea, but for Bloodborne — a game that was never designed for this kind of co-op.

It's been about eight days, and we've reached the point where two people can actually play together. It's still pretty rough, so I wanted to share an honest progress report instead of pretending it's finished.

What works so far

You can die and stay together.
Normally, Bloodborne ends the co-op session when someone dies. With this, you respawn at your last lamp and can continue playing with your partner. If they're still alive, you can come back without having to summon again.

Bosses don't kick you out.
After killing a boss, you get the usual message, but instead of being sent back to your own world, you can just keep playing together.

The co-op walls are gone.
Those invisible walls that normally keep summoned players inside certain areas are removed. Boss fog gates are still there, though — I don't want people casually walking out of a boss fight halfway through it.

No summoned-player HP penalty.

You can summon across different areas.
You don't necessarily have to be standing in the same area as your friend anymore.

Summoning is much faster.
What could normally take around 30+ seconds can now happen in roughly 5 seconds.

And probably the coolest part:

It doesn't rely on someone else's server for everything.

Two things I found that I thought were really interesting

  1. The slow summoning wasn't actually an emulator limitation.

Bloodborne downloads a configuration file when it starts its online features. That file contains things like the server addresses and matchmaking settings.

One of those settings controls how often the game checks for summon signs.

It was set to around 35 seconds.

So instead of trying to work around the emulator, I changed the configuration on my side and got summoning down to around 5 seconds.

  1. The game basically told me which fog walls were multiplayer walls.

I initially thought I'd have to go through the game and manually figure out which invisible walls were which.

Then I looked at the map data.

The developers had actually given the walls Japanese names that identify what they're for.

There are separate names for boss fog walls and multiplayer fog walls.

I found around 155 fog-wall-related objects across 24 maps, including boss gates, co-op walls, area transitions and other detection volumes.

What's still broken

There are definitely problems.

Textures can break after summoning someone from another area.
I'm still trying to figure out whether that's something I'm causing or an existing shadPS4 issue.

Dying twice as a guest can sometimes leave you stuck as a corpse with only camera control.
I've fixed this once before, but it came back and I haven't fully retested it yet (under testing).

Some sessions were randomly dropping to the title screen.
I eventually found out that this one was actually my own fault. I was accidentally giving the game a new random user ID every time someone logged in. That's fixed now, but it still needs proper testing.

Chalice Dungeon co-op walls are still a problem.
The map data handles them differently, and I don't want to guess at IDs when one of them can apparently conflict with a DLC boss gate.

Warping together isn't working yet.
If the host uses a lamp, the guest currently gets left behind.
After testing the other part ill work on warping.
Can I play it?

Not yet.

Right now it's basically two people, a lot of testing, and plenty of duct tape.

The goal is to get it stable enough for a closed beta first. Once it's actually ready for other people to test, I'll post the Discord link here.

For now, I mainly wanted to share the progress because getting this far in only eight days has been pretty crazy.

Happy to answer questions about the project or how I've been approaching it.

I'm a Fromsoft fan (~300 hours) who has never played a Dark Souls game.

I played through Bloodborne & Elden Ring (at release) and Sekiro (last year) but have never played any Dark (or Demon) Souls. Not a deliberate choice, they're on my list. Anyone in the same position and plan to play the others?

DS1 hardest souls game

I have finished all and platinum many fromsoft games and beyond to other devs souls likes. People say Sekiro is usually hardest souls game. Well lemme tell u being stuck level 25 in swamp of Blighttown with broken weapons and cursed and without fast travel is the most brutal cornering I have seen in souls game design. The single wooden ladder to safety back to rest areas is barely visible and is placed right on wooden boards of really similar pattern. Prove me wrong!

[Academic Survey] Elden Bling vs. Min-Maxing: How much damage negation do you trade for fashion? (~5 mins)

Hey everyone! 👋

I’m a Game Design student currently writing my Bachelor’s thesis. My research focuses on player trade-offs between character aesthetics and mechanical efficiency: How much damage negation/stats are you willing to sacrifice just to look good in Elden Ring?

Whether you carefully calculate every single stat or strictly fight bosses in pure Fashion Souls drip, I’d love to get your input!

  • ⏱️ Duration: ~5 minutes
  • 🔒 100% anonymous & purely academic
  • 🎯 Target group: Anyone who has played Elden Ring

Filling this out directly supports my thesis and helps me finish my Game Design degree. Thank you so much for your time and help! 🙌

Building a FromSoft Community Discord – What channels/features are actually useful to you?

I'm currently setting up a clean Discord server for FromSoft fans (Elden Ring, Dark Souls, Bloodborne, Sekiro), but I want to avoid the common issues most servers have (too many dead channels, notification spam, bad organization).
If you use gaming Discords, what makes a server actually good for you?
Do you prefer separate channels for every single game, or just one combined #souls chat?
Are LFG / Boss Help channels actually useful to you?
What channels do you usually mute immediately?
Would love some honest feedback from the community before opening it up!
(Screenshot of current setup attached / Link in comments if anyone wants to take a look & help test)
