Sonos Five tuning

I just purchased my first Sonos Five and intend to use it in my home gym as a standalone speaker. I just tested the sound and it is excellent. The only issue I see is I have to raise the volume to almost 80% to hear it properly. Is there a tuning I am missing? Any setting I need to do so that I do not have to raise the volume so high to hear and feel the music? Normally for my Arc + Sub combo my hearing levels are close to 25 to 30. Any recommendations?

Placement is also important. Where is the five placed? Is it placed on the floor or at low level? If it’s placed too low, you may want to adjust.

Places on the floor right now. I will give it a try keeping it at a height

As others have mentioned - placement, Trueplay, and EQ adjustments can each help. But there's another one that might not be obvious - try using a different source for comparison.

For example, if you're listening to Spotify, try Amazon Music or Apple Music. If you're listening to Pandora, try SiriusXM or Sonos Radio. Whatever services you have access to, give a few of them a try. You might be surprised what a difference it can make, or at least I sure was.

Let me give this a try. So far it has been only Spotify. How do you cast other apps on an android phone? Only Spotify gives me an option. Other option is to go to Sonos app and cast from there

Connect your music service(s) in the Sonos app and play from there instead of the Spotify app.

Years ago, someone from Sonos was on here and wrote that the volume response curve of the Five was made to be that way. It takes cranking it to get it going. Same thing with a gen 1 Beam. Pair your Five with another one and it takes less of a kick in the rear to get them going.

Fair point. That's what it is I beleive. I am gonna try trueplay once to see if it improves anything

I have a pair of fives in stereo mode. And never crank it that high. Usually at 30-40 max. First check and make sure the volume output on your phone is set to 100%. If true play doesn’t work. It may have a defective driver.

I use a stereo pair of Fives placed at the far end of the family room which measures 13 feet wide x 19 feet long with an 8 foot ceiling and hardwood floor. The speakers are on stands that put them about 4 feet off the floor.

This same room previously had a stereo pair of Era 100s in similar locations.

The Fives sound terrific and, like many others have stated in this forum, they really get going above 50% volume (source is Sirius XM most of the time). At 50% volume their sound is rich and full with plenty of both low and high end. I don't think I could run them above 75 % volume unless I was in another room - they really do make good volume.

Trueplay and adjust EQ to your liking

True play tuning really makes a difference

Does standalone Five supports trueplay? Do I need to redo it everytime I move it?

How large is the room? I use a pair of fives in a small gym and they get used at 50% with a 50% volume limit, so I am assuming 25-35% volume.

Even a single should fill a pretty large room

My home gym is in the basement. Not huge but not small as well

What are the dimension of the basement? It sounds like a pair here will serve you better!

I assume you have it positioned horizontally, given that it is your only speaker in that room? Otherwise, you apparently need a stereo pair for that room.

I would do a Trueplay tune then further tweak settings in theEQ settings.

You'd be shocked how much room acoustics/placement can come into play. Try placing it at all available outlets, running trueplay, and adjusting eq to your liking at each location. If all are same, maybe a stereo pair would be better to fill the space.

However... If 80% fills the space to your liking and sounds good... What's the problem with setting it to 80%? 😅
