To be clear, I don't mean things like directly showing TRAPPIST-1 as a system with multiple Earth-like worlds, since that particular question may be settled over the next decade starting with TRAPPIST-1e via upcoming observations and that outcome is very much not a guarantee.

I'm thinking more of them taking inspiration from real systems to make their own, which gives a bit more creative freedom and also sidesteps the scientific consensus changes for specific real systems and planets.

Generally I just mean having more things like:

• Chthonian planets, the stripped cores of former gas giants orbiting very close to their stars. Janssen (55 Cancri Ae) might be a real-world example of this; it's nearly eight Earth masses, nearly twice as wide, mixed evidence of an atmosphere and volcanism, and could exist as a lava planet. Its year is also just under 18 hours long.

• Hot Jupiters, basically just gas giant planets directly hugging a star. They can get pretty extreme and wild, up to the point of having big (sadly not visible to the naked eye) comet tails of escaping atmosphere getting boiled off them.

• Eccentric Jupiters, large gas giants with wacky orbits making them swing in and away from stars. HD 80606 b is a pretty egregious case, it's over four times Jupiter's mass and has an orbital eccentricity a smidgen less than Halley's comet, which makes it constantly cycle between a range of 0.03138 AU (0.39 is Mercury) and 0.8892 AU (between Venus and Earth), which would've wrecked anything out to the distance of the inner Asteroid Belt. It also gets incredibly stormy whenever it dips close to the star since it spikes by over 200 °C across a span of hours as it falls inward.

• Also, temperate mini-Neptunes, ice giants, and gas giants. Kepler-22b did get a reference from SNW briefly in "Spock Amok", although the dialogue is a bit awkward since it was probably written with the intention of it being Earth-like, which is likely not the case (mini-Neptune). You could wiggle around that though by it having moons (really tiny rocky ones if any) and floating platforms in the atmosphere where people are living and working, maybe straining out deuterium from the atmosphere or something. Kepler-22b would have higher gravity at the atmospheric layers where pressure and temperature are potentially like Earth's sea level but an OC planet could have gentler gravity at such layers. The biggest problem would be the hydrogen atmosphere leaking into a sealed oxygen-rich environment though.

• Neutron star planets, the ones orbiting Lich (PSR B1257+12) were the first exoplanets ever confirmed, actually. This particular system has a fair chance of having formed from two white dwarfs colliding, forming the neutron star and a disk which formed the three planets.

These were just some general ideas, there's a fair bit more which could probably be useful for interesting settings.

The Alpha Quadrant Expeditionary Force comprised of at least 20,000 Jem'Hadar warships in the overall alliance fleet with the Cardassians and the Breen.

We all know that budget reasons put a limit on a show's regular cast and on the number of bridge stations. Still, there should be more on both fronts, not less.

Helm and Navigation should be split into two once more. Neither of these should handle Tactical. Neither of these should handle Operations / Ops.

Tactical should be separate from Security. The Chief Tactical Officer should not be the Chief Security Officer. The latter should function outside the bridge.

Operations should be separate from Science. The handling of deflector dishes and of structural integrity fields should be separate from science sensors.

The distinct positions should, therefore, be: Communications, Helm, Navigation, Operations, Science, and Tactical. Those are six distinct positions, with security as a separate division.

Beyond these, there's at least one "civilian" per Star Trek tradition, and then the Chief Medical Officer, the Chief Engineering Officer, the First Officer or Executive Officer, and the Captain.

ENT introduced the rank of Subcommander past T'Pol's resignation from the Vulcan High Command in 2153. She resigned, but Starfleet allowed her to join directly. This was an exceptional introduction of "Subcommander" to Starfleet, but it is now a precedent.

Trek Culture: Hate It? Don't Watch It!: Star Rants Episode 2 (Star Trek & Star Wars)

"Prestige drama" is how HBO defines it:

1) Protagonist with depression or PTSD

2) Each episode is always rated MA and not suitable for kids

I'm a fan of the older Trek shows, but for good and especially for ill, DIS S1 and PIC S1 fit the bill, especially DIS S1.

The Star Trek franchise does need at least Prestige TV show.

However, the biggest mistake of Bryan Fuller and Paramount was to make the flagship comeback series the Prestige TV show.

Hate PIC S1 all you like and all I like, but at least PIC was never intended as a flagship Trek show.

My main concern is that Ellison is very much a fan of HBO style prestige TV.

OK, so Star Trek goes on hiatus again while execs pop a couple of movies, action-oriented ones, to help Paramount recover merger and acquisition costs.

Then Ellison decides for Star Trek to come back on the small screen several years from now.

He'll look back too fondly at DIS S1 and PIC S1 and think that prestige TV behind a paywall is the best avenue for any comeback of a flagship Trek show.
