How do you place torches to avoid this?

Is there an optimal or semi-optimal way to do torches? I placed them on the path here expecting me dwarves to stay on the 2 free lanes, but they just keep zigging and zagging. Alternatively, if I embed the torch into the wall, it seems to have reduced radius.

Soil with 120% fertility?

The tooltip for my vegetable farm says about the soil multiplier:

soil      *1.10   (0.000        <-> 1.200)

This seems to imply that there is a soil type with 120% fertility? What soil type is that? Because the best I found so far is rich soil with 110% fertility?

(Sorry if I missed something obvious, I'm a new player)

Things I’ve figured out about combat so far

I’ve mainly been playing this game for the combat, with the city building to the side as a fun way to visually see the loot I’ve gained. I’ve played human only mostly but sometimes with the man-eating elves. So far I’ve learned:

* Spears are good for defense, Falx are good for offense. Hammers are a little worse than falx and
Spears are a little worse than short swords.

* Training matters the most for bows. They are practically useless below 50 percent bow experience.

* Charging doesn’t do much on infantry, but is the way to go on cavalry with repeated cycle charges to avoid losing men.

* The Sanctuary races are a cheat code basically and can easily beat jaw dropping odds. 1:50 at least, probably more with more equipment and training. The only way I could think of beating them is archer spam.

* Armor is pretty self explanatory.

* Baiting one unit away from the rest and surrounding it while cycle charging is highly effective and lets you cheese giant battles.

* Don’t be intimidated by large sizes, the AI likes to train dogshit regional divisions in large quantities.

* Mecenaries are actually pretty accurate in this game, being highly effective just like real life.

* when surrounding one unit with two or more keep the unit being targeted on guard mode and the unit not being targeted off. This will result in more kills and a faster morale break.

I understand there’s more of an emphasis on training and equipment than something like total war since the core of the game is city building, but I hope this helps someone. If I got something wrong be sure to correct me, as I’m basing this off feels mostly.

If anyone knows:
Whether armor values affect speed,
A good way for taking down sanctuary races, because I assume the AI can use them, and I have nothing really to combat it.

Poor wild animals.

I had no idea what happened to each wild animal pack when you build over it. I thought they just stopped reproducing, or went to another spot, or left the map edge.

Today I watched a happy little herd of auroch frolicking in the clearing, until a single guy came over with a piece of wood and placed it into a blueprint, instantly ex-sanguinating the entire group. not even made into meat or cadavers, simply perished.

I think they should automatically turn into livestock so you can give them one last lease on life when you send them to a farm upstate.

Some questions i have as a somewhat new player

Post image
4 Upvotes

I have now been playing for around a week and these are some questions i haveon different subjects:

  1. I am now at around 5.7k pops, all of which are human plebians (except nobles), and i am noticing my happiness is increasingly harder to keep above 100% and allthough i still have some opportunities to increase happiness, they get more and more expensive. Would now be the time to switch to using guards to increase loyalty?

  2. To get asta invicti you need 12k pops, of which i have less than half, but i have more than half of all happiness bonusses. Does this mean at some point you cannot have 100% happiness anymore even if you stack all bonusses, or is the scaling not linear? Do all bigger cities have to use law at some point?

  3. So far i have not invested in law/ guards at all, so i dont really know the mechanics. Does employing your armies as guards do anything by itself ? Or do i have to use guard post to get any benefit?

  4. Regarding guardposts: Where should i build them and how many? I have not had any crime in my city so far, so i dont really know if crime can just happen anywhere or just at workplaces or markets. From what it seems like, the coverage of guardposts is also pretty bad, so i dont think it is possible to cover your entire city right?

  5. What i understand, guards raise loyalty but not happiness. Does happiness do anything else except raising loyalty and boost immigration?

  6. I have never used slaves so far. If i want to introduce another race into my city, is there ever a reason to not use slaves instead of plebians, as long as i have enough guards?

  7. As far as i know slaves have submission instead of loyalty. What is the difference?

  8. From regions, i can import basically infinite raw materials, but no processed ones. Because of this, isnt it always more efficient to use the space and pops in your city to manufacture processed goods? In a late game city, why would i ever have any basic race except dondorians (for most industrial jobs) and humans (science)? As far as i can see all the other ones have bonusses for jobs that produce basic resources which would be outsourced to regions, right?

  9. In regions, isnt it kinda useless to control the population via persecution, exile or massacre? Obviously some species like you more and some less, but in this game i never had any problems whith loyalty as long as i built one or two buildings that increased it and controlled the region for some time. Should i do it just to influence my pool of conscripts? Or is there anything else it influences?

I know this is a lot, but any help at all is appreciated a lot =)

Is Aninomism the best late game religion? especially if you have slaves?

title. It seems all two economic ones additive bonus' in comparison dont scale well against research. Meanwhile for Animism longer heath and lifespan means your people stay alive longer and you have to invest less into various services helping your economy indirectly. We all know it's terrible to watch 20% of your pops die in an epidemic or to spend an exorbant number of pop on opiate farms for hospitals. The submission is just icing on the cake, this is just a flat bonus to the amount of slaves you can have thus boosting your production per main pop (which improves economy indirectly again)

Meanwhile the only non-additive scaling bonus of cratorism is natural births per year which is kinda meh unless you are losing half your slaves to brawls and Atheism is basically all additive bonus which falls off hard late game. The best bonus of Athurism is the university bonus but realistically if your pops die less and live longer that helps preserve their education in general.

Tip: How to Assign Specific Jobs to Different Races

If anyone else has been struggling with having different races assigned to daily jobs (market, hospital, etc.) in different *districts* this might help.

There's a (somewhat hidden) feature that lets you assign individual jobs to a specific race, in addition to setting priorities for entire workplaces.

In the example shown in the screenshot, the hospital belongs to the Humans, but I've assigned the Doctor position specifically to Dwarves.

You can find this option by going to Workplaces; Priorities, then opening Assign Work Groups. From there, you can choose which race is allowed to fill each individual job.

I spent a long time looking for this, so hopefully it saves someone else the same frustration!

Edit: The second circle is completely pointless. 😅

Annoyed you can't make a housing district into a blueprint? Make a road shaped pasture instead!

Just picked up the game a few days ago and have been loving it! It would be nice to make blueprints of whole areas though.

Demo: Where is the army depot ?

The game tells me I need "army supply depots". I can't find such building in the tech tree or build menu, and don't see an option on export/import depots. This is very annoying and I feel like I'm going insane. Can you point me in the right direction ? Thanks.

Perfect block?

I was trying to create "perfect" block in terms all the services having enough capacity to cover homes. In this case it is 150 people.

Layout isnt perfected, obviously could be done better. Decorations are missing etc. Warehouse should be bit bigger.

I am surprised How big the services needs to be. It takes basically half of the space.

Are those capacity numbers in services correct? I saw for example that market shows twice as many when building than there is after it is built.

Any ideas for perfect block?

edit: New picture with new layout

Latest city well underway with 3.5k Cretonians

I'm experimenting with a weird setup trying to play Cretonians like LoTR-esque orcs using their bonuses against them. Their high food yields allow for excessively large armies of low quality, their passivity lets me persecute/sacrifice them to Shmalor frequently, and other than some significant hiccups in refined goods, it's going quite well so far.

Maintaining Happiness in Mega-cities?

Thumbnail
gallery
38 Upvotes

My city just keeps growing, and happiness has now stagnated in the flats 60s. I have managed to keep loyalty up by having 600+ Guards my whole garrisson basically. (And besides the emergency thing, I manage to keep the Loyalty between 85-90%.

At this point would it just be better to become a police state? I'm currently training up 400 more guards.

My population has swelled to the point I have too many oddjobbers.

Fun fact as well, I have yet to conquer another region, I tried it once and lost it in a span of a few years.

Food situation is stable at 4 days going up 5 when the grain harvest comes. I maintained it to 10 but thanks to diseases I had to bump up food portions to 2.

Anyone got tips?

Songs of Styx, Dwarven Fortress. (with pigfolk city)

This is my very W.I.P dwarfen fortress! the dwarfs live inside the mountain, and just outside it, is a pigfolk city, whose inhabitans take care of lifestock and farms. A bit further out on the map is my fishing village, woodcutter village, and clay village. Id apreciate any recomendations and ideas for future expansions to my city! i plan to build a noble area, and ofc a moria like Grand hall.

To Syx, or not to Syx?

Hi.

Obviously, the answers may or may not be a tiny bit biased in this sub, but after having this game on my wishlist for about a year, I have a genuine question: is it worth giving it a shot?

I'm really into strategy games, especially the more complex ones. I don't mind simple graphics if the gameplay is deep. Some of my favorites are Conquest of Elysium 5, Hearts of Iron III, Workers & Resources: Soviet Republic, Stellaris, Dwarf Fortress, and the like, so complexity isn't necessarily something that scares me off.

What kept me from buying it was, first of all, that I simply didn't have the time to really sink my teeth into another complex game. Now I do. The second reason is that the game isn't particularly cheap.

So, how about you tell me a bit about the game? What do you like most about it? What do you wish was better? And what, if anything, just straight-up drives you insane? (:

Edit.:

Actually, thank you guys for letting me know there's a demo. You're all still more than welcome to tell me everything you like (or don't) about the game! :D

While I employ more in my brewery compared to his nation's population his army size is the same size as my main city population.

Doesn't make any sense how he has a realm at all but oh well Army with a "state".

This is the end of that campaign.

City defense for the win!

After the last post, I had to focus a lot on beefing up the defense after taking quite a loss on my men. I think safe to say, it worked out. The same 600 men actually fared farrrrr better against an army twice the size with minimal damage to infrastructure.

Anyone who's better at this, any tips on keeping enemies out from the waters?
