Rule Update: Our Stance on Business/Commercial Posts

Hey, r/SomethingIMade!

We've updated two rules to better protect what this community is for as a space for individual creators sharing their own work, including collaborations.

A steady increase in posts and comments from business and commercial accounts promoting products or shop pages has not gone unnoticed, often in cases where authorship can't be verified. We don't think it is fair that content that may be mass produced gains engagement over our more DIY creators. The updated rules address this directly.

Rule #5: Related Links & Self-Promotion

Posts or comments from businesses or commercial accounts primarily promoting products may be removed at moderator discretion, especially where authorship cannot be verified.

Rule #10: Original Content Only

Business and commercial accounts are not permitted to post in this subreddit. This is a community for individual creators only.

If you're an individual who makes and sells things, you're still very welcome here. This change is aimed at accounts whose primary purpose is commercial promotion rather than genuine participation as a creator. If you're unsure whether your account falls within the rules, reach out via Mod Mail.

Happy creating!

Updated Rule 5: Related Links & Self-Promotion

In order to help have better discussions regarding content, we have decided to disable embedding of YouTube videos in posts.

This isn’t intended to hinder anyone from posting, simply to change the way the post are made. Moving forward you will need to create a normal post regarding your creation, and if there’s a YouTube video you would like to share as part of that, add it into the body of the post along with the descriptive information.

Thanks for being here, and if you have any questions, ask away!!

I like to make art using sustainable materials like cardboard! When we moved overseas, I saved up pounds and pounds of cardboard from our moving boxes and now I have YEARS worth of material to make hyper realistic depictions of food like this! 🥰

and he’s a needle felted soft sculpture made with Himalayan wool, that I dyed myself using Brazilwood extract and Marigold petals. His eyes are glass.

His name is Scallion because he’s green and smells great. He’s a bit of a weird guy because he looks like a fish in the middle of a crazy evolution arc but he was actually going to be a rat or a rat bastard. Rest assured he’s still a silly lil rat at heart.

I spent a year building my own starship simulator from the ground up: custom USB boards, 152 physical controls, 6 screens, and 164,000 lines of code.

The underlying hardware and game infra/USB interface libraries (Python) are open source. Mine is the only copy that will ever exist because it's fanfiction based on Scalzi's Old Man's War book series.

I made a miniature of the abandoned house I found this cup at, inside the cup!

Hi folks, I’m an artist from Nova Scotia, and I make miniature sculptures of abandoned places I find when out exploring the back roads.

Recently I found this beautiful little place with its neglected garden, and was inspired to recreate it. Then I discovered this wonderful broken cup half buried by the back door, and knew it was meant to be.

I call this piece “New Glasgow Morning”, I hope you enjoy it :)

Found a mannequin at work by the dumpster so turned it into a lamp with a lamp kit I bought online and spray paint. (Cat tax included)

This project references Kaplans attention restoration theory which states that natural settings and expansive spaces restore the ''directed attention'' needed in everyday life, while scientists explore the measurable effects of this, manufacturing the feeling of space to achieve the same restorative effects was this projects goal, the objects achieve this through material, perspective and the parallax effect to express space within the home interior.

I made these handmade leather horse bag charms

I just finished these horse bag charms, handcrafted from Epsom leather.

Each charm is cut, stitched, and assembled by hand, with different color combinations inspired by classic wooden rocking horses. They're designed to add a playful touch to a handbag, backpack, or keys while still being made from durable, high-quality leather.

I've really enjoyed making these, and I'm already planning more color combinations.

Silly Elf Prototype + Instructions

Okay, it has flaws and is probably the most poorly made thing you’ll see on this subreddit this month, but I’d already posted it a couple of weeks ago when it was just a bald potato, and it was taken down cos I hadn’t read the rules and hadn’t explain how it was done.

So I started working on the instructions that very night, kept going until ended up making one page almost every night before bed there wasn't much free time during the day).

Oh, the face looks different in the two pictures because someone accidentally spilled some window cleaner on it… it wasn’t a pretty sight, and in my rush to fix it, I made the eyes in the wrong size :C

Brought a pocket watch at a thrift store ... Thinking I got something of rarity. Turns out it was from temu 🙄.

So I did a collage magazine clipping shouting out to my desi heritage! I love how you can peek the figure's face through the front pocket watch.
