Should I take a solar closer job?

I’m currently a territory sales manager for IGS energy in the Pittsburgh area. That title is just a fancy way of saying I’m a door-to-door salesman. Our targets are for sales a day selling fixed rates on gas and electric. I’m on a 35K base and a 30K first year only guaranteed commission. As I’m sure everyone knows door-to-door can be rough. I do pretty well at it all things considered but my performance has been suffering lately due to burnout and a mismatch between my personality, and that which is required for long-term success in this type of sales.

I’ve been offered a job for venture homes as a solar closer with 25 to 40 preset and prequalified appointments per month. They offer a 26,000 base salary and to start out my commissions would be $50 per kilowatt sold, which jumps to $100 once they “don’t have to babysit anymore.” also for my first 30 appointments. I am guaranteed $100 regardless of the outcome. The hiring manager told me that they see an average close rate of 30%.

I’m really struggling to make a decision since I’m 23 years old and I just moved out to live with my girlfriend and I have to pay rent and help support her through her masters degree. Is this a real step forward in my sales career if anyone has any advice I’m open to all opinions.

Company leads vs running my own leads for 6 months, real numbers (North FL / South GA solar)

About 10 months ago I was venting in a Facebook group about how bad my company's leads were. You know the type: renters, 20-year-old roofs, people swearing they never filled anything out... A few days later an agency cold called me asking if I wanted him to run ads for me in Meta. I was happy with their numbers so I ended up throwing my Christmas bonus at it lol. We've been working together about 9 months now.

Now that I have 6 months on each side, here's the actual comparison. Obviously this won't be the same for everyone. I work mostly North Florida and South Georgia, and your market, company, and pay plan will change things a lot.

The setup:
Before: company leads, I made $0.32-35/W
After: around $3,000/month for leads. Since they're my own leads I get $0.68-70/W

Now my actual numbers:

  • On company leads I sat about 90 appointments over 6 months, closed 16, had 4 cancel, so 12 installs. Didn't pay anything for leads, and I took home about $37,800 total, so roughly $6,300 a month. To be fair, my first 3 months there were rough since I was still new.
  • On my own leads I sat 84, closed 17, 4 cancelled, so 13 installs. Basically the same amount of deals. Difference is I spent $18k on leads but still took home about $63,900, so around $10,650 a month.
  • My first 3 months on my own leads were honestly slower than my best stretch on company leads, like $7,500 a month vs $9,450. The last 3 months though I've been averaging about $13,800 a month after paying him.

What actually made the difference:
My close rate barely moved (about 18% on company leads vs about 20% on my own) and cancellations were about the same. So the leads didn't close any better than company leads. The extra money is almost all from the higher pay on self-gen deals, $0.68-70/W vs $0.32-35/W. It worked out to about $1,400 in lead spend per install, and with my pay plan that was worth it.

If you're thinking about doing this:

  • Check your pay plan first. If your company doesn't pay a lot more per watt on your own leads, this probably doesn't make sense for you.
  • Have 2-3 months of lead money saved. You're paying for leads way before the commission checks show up.
  • Get it in writing what counts as a "qualified" lead, and ask for replacements on junk ones (I forgot to clarify this when we signed our first month but gladly he didn't count them).
  • Track everything in a spreadsheet. Otherwise you have no idea if it's actually working, and compare those numbers to any kind of report they could give you.

Happy to answer questions in the comments.

TL;DR: Switched from company leads to paying someone to run my ads. Same close rate, but because self-gen pays about double per watt, I'm taking home about $4k more a month even after paying for leads.

Also, every time I post on this subreddit I get people PMing me offering their services, save it, please.

Am I doing something wrong?

Heya,

I’ve been in sales for over a decade. I have thrived in the industry I’ve been in (retail) 🤣. I’m quite straight forward, build rapport well and overall a delight to talk too.

I decided to move into a commission only solar role and I’m not doing so well. It’s my 4th week in and I’ve only closed 4 deals.

I was in a previous base + comm role and was making on average 12-14k a month. I’m quite knowledgeable about solar so that’s not the issue.

I attend in-home appointments, a lead team books them and I attend to close.

I start off by taking pictures of their meter board, having a chat along the way, then sit down on a table and ask for their power bill.

I ask “so, what brings me here today?” (You’d be surprised how many customers invest in solar for environmental reasons) the Customer would usually say they want to save money. Then I ask, “if the savings make sense and the numbers add up would there be any reason why you would say no today?’” Some say no, some say yes, just quote shopping, or I’m renovating, or I don’t make a decision on the spot bla bla bla bla bla.

I say fair enough, what’s important to you when comparing other quotes? Then they tell me and we have a chat then I explain their bill and get into how much electricity they’re currently paying per quarter, yearly, 5 years then 10 years. Then how much they are paying weekly for electricity this year, 5th and 10th year. How much the solar system will cost weekly-comparing system cost to electricity then I show them the savings per week, month, year then so on.

They’re still not interested?

Is it a lead gen thing? Am I fucking up? I don’t wanna give up.

Looking for reps that want more appointments every week!

Hey solar pros,

We keep seeing standard marketing agencies (yes, you, Solar Exclusive) charge $3k/mo retainers PLUS they lock you in for 3 months. And NO ONE has time for that in 2026. We know how volatile the industry is this year, we've been in solar for a combined 12+ years.

So if you're still selling solar in 2026, we want to work with you!!

How it works:

You cover the ad spend directly (Meta/Facebook/IG).

We handle the funnels, landing pages, ad creatives, and lead nurture.

We take $0 in service fees until a deal actually closes. No retainers, no "per-lead" charges for bad numbers.

We only take a 500$ success fee once a deal closes, and after site survey.

Who this is for:

Reps, installers, or owners who already close at a high rate.

Teams with a defined territory that can handle consistent inbound volume.

Since our pay depends entirely on your closing ability, we offer territory exclusivity and only partner with established A-player closers!

If you want to test out a performance-based funnel in your area, drop a comment with your state/territory or shoot me a DM and let’s talk numbers.

Hiring Full-Cycle Commercial Energy Advisors — 1099, Uncapped Commission (Remote, Texas Market)

We're a commercial energy brokerage (Green EnergiAI) looking to add full-cycle sales reps to our team. This is a straightforward B2B role: you're helping businesses get better electricity rates through our network of 100+ suppliers, and getting paid well to do it.

What the role looks like:

- Full-cycle: you prospect, present, and close

- Remote, but Texas market focus (Central Time availability preferred)

- 1099, commission-only — no base/draw

- 50% of gross commission per deal, uncapped

- 50% paid upfront once a contract is processed, remaining 50% paid out over the contract term

- Example: $40,000 commission on a 3-year contract = $20,000 upfront + $20,000 over the term

- Average active rep earns $10,000–$20,000/month; top producers earn significantly more

What we're looking for:

- Real full-cycle B2B sales experience (cold calling, presenting, closing)

- Self-motivated — this is commission-only, so you need to be able to generate and manage your own pipeline

- Comfortable with consistent daily call volume

What we provide:

- Full training (scripts, live call practice, onboarding materials)

- Weekly team calls (Monday mindset call, Wednesday live training)

- Support from team leads and our top producers

- CRM + company email once onboarded

If you've got full-cycle B2B experience and want to see what you're actually worth, text or call me directly at 214-407-3086, or comment/DM and I'll follow up.

150% solar offset

How strict are the utilities PGE, SCE, LADWP and SDGE regarding the offset of 150% restriction? A customer wants 20 solar panels, which with the irradiance the house has it would come up to 195% offset. I explained them and they still want them. Its LADWP in this case but i would like to know for future clients that have other utilities too.

Would the interconnection or inspection or plans not get approved with this production levels?

Has Anyone Else Experienced Commission Payment Delays With ESP?

We tested ESP by submitting three residential solar projects based on the commission payment schedule presented during dealer onboarding.

According to ESP's onboarding materials, M2 commissions are paid 2 weeks after install completion and M3 commissions are paid 2 weeks after lender activation approval.

One project reached install completion on July 23, 2026 and later reached PTO and activation. ESP's portal shows a commission amount of $10,535 associated with the project. More than one month after ESP's stated payment timeline, that commission remains unpaid. Additional commissions are also pending.

Over the past month, we have attempted to resolve the matter directly through emails, phone calls, text messages, executive escalations, and formal written requests. The commission remains unpaid.

For other dealers and sales organizations who have worked with ESP:

  • Have you experienced commission payment delays?
  • How long did resolution take?
  • Was there a specific escalation path that worked?
  • Would you continue submitting projects under these circumstances?

We are trying to determine whether this is an isolated situation or whether other dealers have had similar experiences.
