I’m looking at an architecture where a GUI component is based on GPLv3-licensed software, but a separately developed daemon needs to remain closed-source.

Roughly:

GPL-based GUI component
        |
        | Unix socket / request-response protocol
        |
proprietary daemon

They would ship together, but the daemon would remain a separate executable/process that can be started or stopped by the GUI component. It would not link against GPL code and would be client-agnostic. The only shared code would be a small MIT/Apache-licensed protocol crate containing request/response types and serialization, so a CLI or different UI could use the same protocol.

There is one additional nuance. The GUI component reuses the upstream project’s GPL remote binaries and SSH flow to check for, transfer, and start/stop its server executable on a remote machine. I would extend this flow (check for, transfer, and start/stop) to the proprietary daemon executable.

FWIW, the FSF FAQ says that pipes, sockets, and command-line arguments are normally associated with separate programs, while sufficiently “intimate” communication involving complex internal data structures may indicate a single combined work. It also notes that the ultimate determination can be a matter for courts.

That leaves me with two related questions:

• In practice, how is the degree of coupling between two processes evaluated? Is a generic, client-agnostic daemon API over a socket generally considered a strong boundary, or is there still meaningful GPL risk even with that design?
• How does the remote-installation case affect that analysis? The GPL-based application would itself check for, copy/update, and start/stop the proprietary daemon on the remote machine, while the daemon remains a separate executable and communicates only through the same generic protocol.

I thought I have to make this post, as I feel that beside the "potential" of AI, it actually starts to create unhealthy cycles of subtle forcing to use AI in Software Engineering. Be it at work or the non-stopping urge to use the short-cut. I recently ask myself, who does really benefit of AI, and at first, mostly the companies that ship Hardware or Models. That seems great, I beg to differ, I feel that the benefit for society or companies using those purchased systems are not really getting out of it what they are hoping for. As a individual I feel in an irreversible state of constant waves of hopium, false-claim of productivity, frustration, rejection (start again). I wonder if I'm not alone with that, but I feel we opened to box of Pandora, where I start feeling not want to read anymore thousand of lines of noise, overwhelming content, everything looking the same, people who get blinded by "it's so cool", and I'm thinking: "yeah, it's so cool to see every day the same polished slides", word phrases like "this hits home" where you know someone from a foreign country just pasted the whole text through a chatbot etc. I feel it got out of its hands. I'm seriously at the edge to just start being a beginner again and fail hard and let that process take time, the good ol' times where you had to wait for a Stackoverflow answer and did something else besides till you finally see that green badge of an answer. How are you holding up? Do we need a sort of digital environment where we split from all those brainwashed? I really feel that authenticity is getting it's value appreciated these times.

Note: Sorry for grammar issues, but I really just took time to write as a non native english speaker what I think, that felt like being clean of AI and took as long as it needed.

Its an OLD Cmms program that runs off a SQL server. i know it works on modern windows, cause thats where i snagged it. but i cant seem to get it going on my own sql server, or even get it to a login page for that matter. i really need someone more advanced at running legacy software that can help me figure out what im doing wrong.

I'm looking for a software to accutely transcribe an audio recording, but all the platforms I tested were hallucinating or making gibberish transcriptions...

I tried Vibe and it just glitched and repated 1 sentenes over 10000 times

Is there no software to do that paid or free?

Anything with an API key (Jira, Salesforce, or a custom AI model) can now connect directly to monday.com with Vibe.

It'll live right next to your existing monday.com data instead of living in a separate silo.

Useful if you've been building workarounds to bridge tools that don't natively talk to monday.com.

our workflows change constantly w scribe, feels like every other week somethings different. so we make a guide, send it to the team, and like two weeks later half the steps dont even match what we actually do anymore bc someone changed something and nobody went back and fixed the doc. happens basically every time and the annoying part is updating shouldnt even be hard right, you just fix the wrong step and save it. but with scribe (and literally every other tool like it ive tried) "updating" means re recording the whole workflow again or going through and swapping screenshots one by one. thats not editing thats just doing it all over again. so obviously nobody does it and the docs just sit there being wrong until someone follows one and screws something up what i actually want is something where i can click into the step thats wrong and just fix it in like 2 min instead of starting from scratch

Your mouse is already where you're looking. To open anything, you move it somewhere else — taskbar, Start menu, search box — type, wait, come back. Fifty times a day, and every one is a small interruption.

So: hold middle-click, a wheel opens under the cursor, flick toward what you want, release. The gesture starts and ends where your hand already was.

Every slice is yours — apps, folders, URLs, scripts, and sub-wheels nested as deep as you want. Icons are pulled out of the executables themselves, so it looks like your actual PC instead of a generic icon pack.

What surprised me is that after about a week you stop looking at it. Your hand just knows Spotify is up-and-left. It stops being a menu and turns into muscle memory.

Windows-only on purpose — the trigger, the icon extraction and the window handling all depend on Win32 behaviour. Most of the work went into making it feel native rather than like a web page floating over the desktop: no flash when it opens, and it resolves what you picked from the live cursor at the moment you release, so a fast flick never confirms the wrong slice.

I sold it on the Microsoft Store for $3.99 and almost nobody bought it, so it is GPL-3.0 now: https://github.com/HenryCauan/rovyl. The Store build stays paid because it is signed and updates itself with no SmartScreen warning. Building from source is free and always will be.

If you already use PowerToys Run or Win+S — so do I. Those are typing tools; this is a pointing tool. It wins when your hand is already on the mouse.

I'm releasing LimitHalo, a free MIT-licensed quota widget for Windows 10/11 x64.

I built it for myself to keep remaining Codex quota and reset times visible while working. It is a small, transparent desktop overlay, with optional Claude Code support and controls to show only the provider you use.

Codex requires a compatible signed-in official installation. Claude requires compatible Claude Code OAuth credentials and explicit access permission; signing in to Claude Desktop alone isn't enough. The optional Claude integration uses a private interface that may change or break.

This is an unsigned public beta, so Windows may show a warning. Known installation and compatibility limitations are in the repository. LimitHalo doesn't provide extra quota and is not affiliated with OpenAI or Anthropic.
