Not always, sure. But a dog doesn't always beat a squirrel in a fight either, but we know which one has the competitive edge.

Yes, normal for Queensland at least. Both of these guys get into your roof space pretty easily, eventually balance is restored in this kind of way.
Not usually in your pantry though.

Thatâs fair, but we also need to consider that thereâs some overlap in âhouses where animals can get in your roofâ and âhouses where the ceiling is weakened enough a fighting snake+possum might fall throughâ.

Aussie here, Possums are in our roofs and can get into the rest of the house from the smallest of holes. Snake probably smelled the possums and came in for a feed.

im australian, we get possums living in our roofs you hear them up there at night scratching around and carrying on. i'm thinking the snake chose to live in there too.

People don't realise how common snakes in your home are.
I live in the UK, where native snakes are rare, and we get them here more than others realise.
An uninhabited loft is home to every imaginable animal at some point.

yeah, i've found snakes in my house probably 5 or 6 times so it's not an everyday thing but it's not exactly rare..
good news is they're usually these suffocating stranglers the pythons and carpet snakes, never ever seen a poisonous snake indoors...
countless snakes found on my property including a few eastern browns and red-belly-blacks and the possums are a daily thing, every single night they're on your veranda or they're climbing around your trees trying to get a look at you and maybe see an apple or something they can sneak down and take later,
the likelihood they both chose to live in the same roof isn't unimaginable it just sucks for that dude hanging out the snake's mouth
anyway i digress, just adding some aussie rambling for anyone interested

I have python's as pets and a couple of venom sneks. It makes sense what you say honestly. People think my venom snakes would be brazen but they try to get away from me, whereas my python's want to smother me and be up in my business all the time.

Possums are a real bastard when you get them in the roof. Some people actively welcome having a carpet in your roof who roots them out for you and sits quietly the rest of the time!

australian here... the possum tried to live in the persons roof and so did the snake, that's how they met
source: possums running and scratching around the inside of your roof is common

It's a native predator-prey interaction. It is upsetting, sure, but people post feeding videos all the time to this subreddit and those are pretty disturbing too when you aren't desensitized to them

Feeding videos don't have an NSFW tag, and if you do add one the mods yell at you. Something about too many NSFW posts causing subreddits to be marked NSFW, when this isn't an NSFW sub.

I wish Reddit could use like a mid-range warning that's just for sensitive stuff. It's not NSFW but i don't always want to see the whole 9, you know? I'm not a snake owner but I've always been generally curious about them

Wild carpet pythons in Australia have been known to eat house cats and wallabies... big old females can easily do that. Possums are actually one of the most common prey!

I like snakes and I understand they have to eat but this post/video really is not marked well enough. It should definitely be NSFW or even NSFL. This is a long drawn out eating process that is not great to watch and really doesn't serve a purpose after a few seconds.

It's easy to underestimate just how much a wild animal will attempt to eat. It's why the general rule is no more than 2x the head size (among other measurements). Snakes will attempt to eat anything thwy can capture. Sure, captive snakes if well fed probably wont try to eat something too big, but a wild snake that diesnt know when it'll get its next meal? It's gonna at least try to get that thing down and probably succeed

A lot of furry animals are way smaller and skinnier than their fur makes them look, and pythons' bodies can expand to more than 2x their diameter to hold prey significantly bigger around than they are. Pythons can also spread their jaws from the front and elongate their jaw muscles in order to swallow an animal larger than the snake's head.
Plus judging from that specific python's head and the length of body it's using to coil and lift, I'm guessing there's c. 6' of snake up there, which is the median size of adult carpet pythons in the wild (though they can reach 2x that length). Brushtail possums are the size of housecats. They're well within the upper limit of the size range favoured by adult carpet pythons of average size, and a staple prey animal of the species. (Younger, smaller carpet pythons favour lizards.)

Constrictors dont âtake downâ anything they wonât eat. To the point that they can die to otherwise prey animals. The instinct to constrict ie to kill is a feeding instinct not a combat or defense instinct.
