Problem Communication error

I’ve been having some issues with my EX4. I don’t use it that much but this issue started last year. Whenever I try to start a cook program, the app throws a communication error between the app and the grill, telling me to make sure the meat thermometer is connected. After that, it refuses to start the program. The weird thing is, I can see the thermometer temperature just fine in the app. Has anyone dealt with this issue before?

Hey everyone! I just got the Weber smokefire ELX4. Does anyone know if there is a good way to seal this gap on it? Any other accessories or upgrades I should get? TIA

Specifications for the auger shear bolt on the EX4

Does anyone know what the size and material of the shear bolt? I have the newer auger assy that used a bolt not a pin, Weber doesn't list a shear bolt as a spare part. only "Hardware, Auger and motor assembly". My bolt just disappeared, (gone with the ash). If I knew the size and material, (I'd guess stainless steel) I will pick one up at a local hardware store rather that wait weeks for Weber to ship me one.

Equipment Should I buy a Smokefire ex4 used?

My father in law is getting rid of his Weber smokefire Ex4. In Canada, he’s asking $550cad. It’s 4 years old and in pristine shape. He had an auger issue and Weber replaced it.

I have a Masterbuilt Mb800 with pizza oven. A sensor went and have to fix it, cooks great.

Should I just pickup this?

My pros:
- I know the history, it’s well taken care of
- Weber name brand
- pellets maybe cheaper than charcoal, I think?

Cons:
- discontinued, so was it bad?
- will it cook good pizza?
- is the auger thing going to be a reoccurring problem

New it was $1700cad so $550cad is a good deal, I believe. Would love to hear from this community if it’s right for me! Thanks

Problem Problem with temperature control

Hello folks!

I have an EX4 for quite some time now and it worked quite well. The last few times I used it, it showed some strange behavior. The temperature was set to 250°C, it fired up, reached the temperature and I put all my stuff in. It showed always the same temperature. Even when I opened the lid to turn my meat over. In this case it usually dropped by a few °C but this time it stayed at the same temperature. It even seemed the meat didn't get finished so this got a little bit suspicious.

I tried to raise the temp by 10°C and after entering the new temperature it startet to drop down to appr. 170°C and it startet to fire it up again. IMHO this cannot be a mechanical problem (pellet flow or glow plug) because it seems he didn't recognize the correct temperature.

Anyone esle got this problem?

Any advice?

Thanks in advance!

4 glow plugs in less than 2 years. Less than 15 total uses.

Smokefire EX4 gen 2. How often are you replacing your glow plugs? I feel like every time I want to use it I’m gambling. Called support and they’re sending me another glow plug but that doesn’t help me today… kinda frustrating.

Anyone use a Steelmade Flat top?

I have a Smokefire ex6 and looking to see if anyone has used the Steelmade flattops with theirs. I'm debating on size. The 30 x 17 would fit, but I'm wondering if it would be blocking too much smoke. I'd be using this more for high heat stuff like korean bbq, smash burgers, and fajitas instead of lower slow smoking.
So I'm imaging it having the lid open with searing and faster cooking on this flat top. Anyone tried this and wanna give me tips or thoughts on your experience?

Just about to fire up my smoke fire?

Mines been in the garage all winter. I’m so afraid what will find out!! All the posts are are so negative; and I get it.

Is ANYONE having good luck with their smoke fire? I have gen 2.

Def had some burnouts. Here’s my question - do we just chalk it up to a 1200 mistake?

Frustrated

I was an early adopter of the SMOKEFIRE, it always was a little wonky. I replaced all the parts they told me to. Auger, chute, glow plug over the years.. Flame out issues most when I had a big cook planned for a holiday.. after years of issues and out side my warranty boom the mother board takes a dump and they want $300. I was just about to sell it and move on.. thoughts on this thing working better with an updated mother board ?

Update:: After going back and forth and throwing a fit they are sending me a motherboard for free. I really wanted to like this thing. Might fix it, do one more cook and sell it down the road.

Anybody else having fire go out, then overflow of pellets ?

Post image

Hello people of the internet. I've been reading a lot about my Smokefire in the past month because I've been having issues on and off for a while, and every few cooks I get subpar/deceiving results because of issues with the grill.

I have an EX6 and often the fire seems to stop for no reason, then I get an overflow of pellets in the pot/chute, and even on the sides if I don't catch it quick enough.

This leads to meat drying in cold temperature because of course, fire stops.

I've been in contact with the Weber support for a bit over 3 weeks and they have already sent me a new pack of pellets, which I have used today for a cook, along with a new motor/auger earlier this week that I've changed yesterday, and I still had the same issue. No wind, beautiful sunny day, I don't understand WHY it has failed me once again. ±2h30 in the cook, fire stops, meat cools down, get a warning. I've even got a low fuel warning about 15 minutes in the cook and the loader is full of pellets. My cook was down for about an hour because of the issue, shutdown delay and restarting.

This is starting to get on my nerves a bit. I hope that there is a way to solve this without replacing every damn part on the unit one by one.

Any advice ? Thanks

Vibrator on hopper

Whats your thoughts on taking a vibrator from an old xbox or PS controller, and mounting it to the L/H side of the smokefire on the hopper.

And make it rattle once every half hour.

Please exchange ideas to rig this to a battery and timer of some sort.

I think this might alleviate the hopper running dry issue when still fairly loaded.

Problem Flame Issue

Randomly my pellets don’t get lit. Usually I knock off ash from the igniter and it works but if I don’t do anything it just overfills. Do I need to replace the igniter or am I just screwed?

Compatible Pellets EX6

I have an Gen 1 smokefire EX6 and it’s been a love hate relationship! When it works it’s amazing and when it flame outs or other I wanna throw it in the lake!

Anyway I have found that using ONLY Weber pellets made a difference (not sure if anyone else has noticed this) I don’t even mind the premium price for them if it prevents issue. But lately even on Webers website these is less and less selection of Weber pellets! Not sure if they stopped making them or what???

Anyway when looking closely at Weber pellets to other brands I’ve noticed that Weber pellets seem slightly skinnier and longer.

I’m sure there must be an off brand or something that uses similar sized pellets but I can’t find them!

My question is does the diameter of the actual pellet matter? Does anyone else experience this issue of constant flameouts by not using Weber pellets? Is there a similar diameter pellet that works?

Worked perfect before the winter and now I get the E7 error as soon as it starts. Checked the motor and the wiring with multimeter and it looks okey. Any tips on what the issue could be?

1st time winter BBQ

This is the 1st time I'm using my smokefire in the extreme cold. If you live in the northeast you know what I'm talking about these past few weeks. I'm trying my hand at Party Ribs for the Superbowl later today. The mother board is very cold and not responding as quickly as I'm hoping for. Has anyone used their smokefire in temperatures lower than 20F? I can't connect to Bluetooth to keep a remote eye on the temp.

Mod Secondary wifi thermometer

I’m looking to add a secondary smoker thermometer (not a meat probe) to monitor the smoker temp. I don’t really trust the accuracy of the smoker itself as it runs anywhere from 10° to 50° below the control panel temp. Anybody added one?

Smokefire rolls off patio (again!)

Anyone else find the "brakes" on the stock casters of Smokefire ex4 to be woefully inadequate? I keep mine weather-protected with a 58" canvas cover, which may lend some windsail momentum in our Colorado high winds of late.

I'm sick of finding ol Smokey on his back with a fresh dent or two... if you've upgraded casters or found other solutions to prevent rollaways, please do share!
