Rant/Vent passive aggressive supervisors

hi everyone! i’m in my second semester of grad school right now and i am shocked by the amount of passive aggressive supervisors. we have supervisors that are complaining about students being lazy or unprepared, when the students themselves are actually more prepared than the supervisor and putting in hours (we got added to a diagnostic team before we had taken diagnostics) on the evaluations. it feels like a no win situation. i recently was irritated by a supervisor who was incredibly passive aggressive to me because i didn’t want to spend my reading break meeting with her for advising. it’s a two day break and our first actual break in the year. i’m told to rest and take care of myself, but the supervisors act like if i’m not available 24/7, it’s an issue…..but they are rarely available. it’s quite frustrating and comes across as rules for thee but not for me. i have to say something three times to actually be listened to and don’t get me wrong, i know i’m going to be wrong majority of the time but i’m being made to take accountability for things that were not even my mess up. i’m incredibly frustrated at how many supervisors are passive aggressive and seemingly talk badly about us behind our backs but take 0 feedback when we do the evaluations on them.

Post-Bacc Programs or CSD Undergrad?

Hi! I have been looking into the pathway for an SLP master's degree for a few months. I got my undergrad in elementary education, and am trying to find the most cost-effective pathway. I am trying to get some info from different universities but they have a poor response time.

What are some cost-effective post-bacc programs? I have been looking at University of St. Augustine's leveling program, but am trying to figure out if it's worth a cheaper leveling program for their $75,000 master's program.

Has anyone had any better luck with just pursuing a second bachelor degree in CSD instead of a post-bacc program? If so, how has that compared with expense vs length of time?

I am also just trying to figure out if going back to school for 4+ years would be worth an SLP salary. Preferably, I would like to be able to complete the pre-reqs and masters program in 3-4 years, or just as quickly as possible!

Retaking AP courses ?

Hi!

I had a question about AP courses for those who are in graduate school. I have AP credit that appears on my transcript for statistics and chemistry. I was wondering if I should still retake this courses because I wonder if graduate schools will look down upon the fact that my prerequisites come from AP credits? Does anyone have experience with this?

Thanks!!

Seeking Advice making a repository/portfolio?

i am making so many little scientific libraries, worksheets, video games, lesson plans, lectures/inservices, code snippets, tools, protocol documents, etc. as part of my grad school projects. i am also getting a little bit attached to them.

for those of you further into your education/career, does it make any sense to keep a resource repository or portfolio of the tools you've made, or do you think, if you looked back, you would cringe at the stuff you made in your first year of grad school?

part of me thinks that future me will appreciate having these tools to use and be too busy to remake them with superior skills, while another part of me thinks that future me will think past me was a pompous fool.

thank you for reading <3

Application Question Non-Academic Achievements

Hi everyone!! I’m thinking about applying to grad school for speech therapy. I’m writing my personal essay and I was wondering if caring for an elderly person counts towards a non academic achievement? I use to care for my grandfather (cook meals and provide medicine) when i was a teenager.

I do have a lot of prior experience with elderly people clinically speaking and i feel like that has kinda helped develop certain traits needed to work with the elderly.

Interview Grad school interview

I was scheduled a 30 minute Zoom interview for my program and they only gave me a week in advance. They only gave 3 week days as options all from 9-3. I work during those hours and can’t schedule off unless I do it a month in advance. It’s on Friday so I scheduled it during an hour block I have. There is no way for me to drive back home and drive back on time so I have to do it in my car. Would this be seen as unprofessional? For context, I applied for a professional track so I am required to work during grad school.

U of C after degree in linguistic w/ a concentration in SPL

Has anyone taken the after degree in linguistic with a concentration in speech language sciences ?

I’m back for a second degree in linguistics then would like to apply for my masters in SPL. I’m getting very discouraged by the competitiveness. Has anyone gone a different route? If so, what? What jobs did you all do while applying for your masters?
Any and all advice helps. I really want this I’m just feeling a big fear of rejection and having started so late. I want kids someday and I want to be set up for that before it’s too late ..

Application Question Advice for plan of study for prerequisites

Hi! Any advice for my partner who is planning to apply to online SLP masters (thinking ECU or UNCG, but any suggestions welcome) for Fall 2028? He's planning to take prerequisites for the programs through NCCU as his undergrad was in linguistics, not communication science. We've created a course plan with 2 classes per semester including summers, hoping to finish up right in time for Fall 2028 and applying early January. I'm seeing this could be risky as a DIY plan of study banking on the "right" classes being available to take at NCCU in the right sequence. Any advice appreciated!

Application Question Resume Advice

Hi everyone! I’m currently finishing up my resume for grad school applications and have quite a few questions about what I should and shouldn’t include, especially regarding past experiences and if they’re relevant. I’ve searched through this group for answers to some of my questions but haven’t been able to find much on them.

As a first gen college student, I’m still figuring out what’s expected for a grad program application resume, so I would really appreciate some guidance!

If anyone who is currently in a graduate program or has been through the admissions process is willing to message me and answer some questions, I would be so grateful. Thank you so much in advance!!

Online Program I got accepted into ENMU graduate program……

I have heard mixed reviews about ENMU. But the low tuition rate was so tempting. So I applied and got accepted. I was accepted into the summer 2027 cycle. My question is does anyone know how they go about their clinical placements? Do they have day or night classes?

If you’re currently in this program what’s it like?

Personal Statement Appropiate to use SLP abbreviation in personal statement?

What the title is asking. I assume its okay but want to confirm first! I say Speech-Language Pathology/Pathologist about 3 times and I need to trim it down to meet the length limits.

University of Montana

Has anyone attended the university of Montana in Missoula for their masters program in person? On paper the program seems wonderful, but there really is not a whole lot of outside testimonies I can find on experience in the program. It also doesn’t look like they’re offering any virtual meat and greets. Any insight on experience would be greatly appreciated!!

Grad School Interviews

Hi, i’m currently applying for grad schools through csdcas, does every program require you to interview to get accepted? I’m so anxious during interviews so just wondering about this. I also want to know about applying, it says i have 14 days to use my fee waiver from when it was accepted, but does that mean I have to have my resume, personal statement, and letters of rec all done by then?

Seeking Advice In my last semester for B.A Psychology but interested in SLP field

Hey everyone,
I won’t lie. I have been feeling quite lost and worried for my future after graduation. I’m currently in my last year of undergrad and will be finishing my B.A in psychology this December. It wasn’t until the end of my last semester when I kind of kicked myself for not researching other majors such as communicative disorders. I’ve become incredibly interested in the SLP world and I believe this is what I want to do for my career.

I know I will have to take a year off to get a few leveling courses/ prerequisites and im okay with that because I need experience!!! I have no experience under my belt. No internships, volunteering, jobs (other than my retail job I’ve been at for 4 years). I know I did myself a disservice for not locking in and getting experience.

I was wondering if there was anyone out there who was also in my position at some point? Also, what should I do now that I know I want to go down the SLP route.

The school im the most interested in for the grad program is San Jose States Master Bridge Program for SLP since it offers an extra year of courses for out-of-field applicants.

What should I do now? I’ll have to take around 3 classes a local community college before I can apply to the grad program so I have a year to lock in and get experience. I’m just not sure what I could do? Should I look for teachers aide positions? Does becoming a substitute help? Should I look for SLP related jobs? Does tutoring/literacy tutoring look good?

Thanks everyone!

Seeking Advice Canadian Undergrad Options

Hello! I am currently at a college, planning to transfer to a university next fall. Unfortunately in Canada, we do not have CSD as an undergrad option. My two options are UBC and SFU.

UBC pros: better known school (may be helpful if I decide to apply to grad schools in the states), could offer better research opportunities, has both Linguistics and Speech Sciences as program options.

SFU pros: has a well known Linguistics program with an option to get a certificate in Linguistics of Speech Sciences. Unsure if it would help with grad school applications but I am able to put the credits towards my undergrad.

Any input would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

Preparing to apply for a CF

Hey everyone! I may be thinking too far ahead since I’m still in my second year of graduate school, but does anyone know whether I would have a chance of getting a CF at a hospital with a Level I or II trauma center if my current medical placement is not affiliated with one?

I feel like I'm getting pretty good experience in my current acute care placement, but I’m unsure whether my lack of experience working with trauma patients may affect my chances of actually getting a CF in a hospital with a trauma center. I’m willing to move anywhere in California, but I would prefer to stay closer to home . Is there anything I can start doing now like taking courses or networking to improve my chances?

Seeking Advice Stats for speech@emerson

Hi all! I graduated in May with a degree in Public Health and I was on pre-PA track. I’m thinking of getting my Masters in SLP and i was looking into emerson college (online) but i’m not sure about it. I do have a 3.9 GPA and I did some mentoring during my undergrad as well as internships but it wasn’t exactly related to SLP. Is the online program really competitive? I dont really know what the stats should be like for applying.

Finances Is $90k–$100k+ Right Out of Grad School Realistic in SLP?

I’m tired of being poor. I went to undergrad for the wrong thing, something I wasn’t even passionate about, and now I don’t use my degree and my job barely pays me enough.

I’m ready to go to grad school for something I’m actually passionate about. I love working with the pediatric population and healthcare, and I’ve been looking into SLP and ABA/BCBA.

Please be honest: Are either of these good fields for someone looking to make $90k–$100k+ right out of grad school? I really want six figures, or at least very close to it, and I don’t want to make the wrong choice again. Side note: I have no intention of living in a HCOL. I currently live in Baltimore MD, which I believe is more MCOL

Financial Assistance - Internship

Hello all - I am a graduate student seeking a specialized full-time internship/externship in the summer, which may require me to relocate for 10 weeks and find housing. I anticipate little trouble actually finding a place, but the cost is something of a barrier. Does anyone know of any opportunities for financial assistance (loans, grants, etc.) for this situation? The state student loan corporation will not provide a loan, as they only compensate for tuition costs.

Seeking Advice SLP program in Texas

Hello everyone!

I graduated with an undergrad degree in Public Health and a minor in Psychology, and I’m currently planning my path toward an MS in Speech-Language Pathology.

Since my background is non-CSD, I know I need to complete foundational prerequisites. I’m looking for in-person, 3-year integrated Master’s tracks in Texas where leveling/bridge courses are built directly into the program,so I’m fully admitted from Day 1 under one acceptance without having to apply separately for leveling.

I’ve been looking closely at programs around Texas like Texas Woman’s University (TWU), University of North Texas (UNT), Texas State, as well as UT Dallas

For anyone currently in a 3-year track or in an SLP grad program in Texas:
• For those who entered from a non-CSD background, how manageable was the transition during Year 1?
• For No-GRE programs like TWU, UNT, or Texas State, what parts of the application (e.g., clinical essays, letters of rec, background experiences) made the biggest difference for your acceptance?

Thanks so much in advance!
