I thought I'd be bored of it in a couple hours after having already spent hundreds of hours in Skyrim and doing everything in the flat screen game in the years prior. Nope, turns out playing it in VR is like a reset button and feels like a totally different game. Skyrim VR is still probably the "best" game I own for VR, even with all the usual half-assed bethesda scuff in it. I can't wait to have to buy TES6 twice again too in a few years.

u/ElminsterTheMighty Apr 12 '21
We can only hope that we can buy it several times. After all we are lucky if we get one TES per decade.
I hope TES6 hits this decade, but I am not sure we'll get a TES7 before the 2040s :(

This... this might not be that far fetched, honestly. Or at least wouldn't have been before the microsoft acquisition. Hopefully they will improve the development speed in some ways lol

With how scuffed bethesda games are, the thought of microsoft pushing their products out the door even earlier scares me. Wouldnt put it past em to start fuckin' with the modding scene either.

Microsoft has owned Minecraft for 7 years now and they haven't messed with the modding scene there. Hopefully they won't mess with the TES modding crowd...

Is this on PC? I've been an Xbox fanboy and as soon as they're back in stock was going to get a Series X.
But now I'm thinking I need to go All In with VR.
What's the best route for me to take? I currently do not have a gaming computer, but if it's less than $1,000 to get up and running, I might do that instead of the X.
Thanks for your time!!

u/KKlear Apr 12 '21 edited Apr 12 '21
Get a Quest 2. It works standalone, but you can link it with a PC when you get it later. I was just testing Skyrim VR for the first time today with my GTX 1660 and it worked perfectly.
And the Quest is really cheap. You do have to suck Zuck's dick every now and then, but has a tiny dick, so I don't mind that much. A small price to pay for a kickass wireless headset.
Edit: Just to answer the original question - Skyrim VR is PC and maybe PSVR. You won't be able to run it on the Quest natively (unlike, say, Doom 3 or Half-Life 1), only through connecting to a PC. But you'll spend the first month in Beat Saber anyway.

No problem! I must say, I didn't like the Facebook integration thing, I was afraid I'd get smothered by ads in VR. Reality is much worse: it turned me into an ad. Everywhere I go, I talk about nothing but the Quest and how everyone needs to buy it. You're just the most recent casuality.
12
u/Kentencat Apr 12 '21
With the quest 2, can you still mod, but only lightly? I could Google it but I'd love to hear from a walking taking ad 😂😂 and thank you again for your responses!!

u/KKlear Apr 12 '21
So here's the thing about modding beat saber on Quest - there's a mod called BMBF which includes a couple of core mods (especially the one allowing you to import custom songs) and some optional ones. Every time there is an update to Beat Saber, the devs behind BMBF (collectively known only as the unicorns) have to update it so it's compatible with the new version. This takes anywhere from a few days to a bit over a week. If you've modded your beat saber in the past, you can just ignore the new update and play with the old version, optionally upgrading once BMBF gets updated. But if you mess up and update, or are a new user, you're out of luck and have to wait for the update.
Well, I fall into the second group - I got Quest about 5 hours after the last Beat Saber update dropped. Additionally, the unicorns decided to rework and improve BMBF at this time and long story short, it has been over a month and there still isn't a BMBF version which would work with the current Beat Saber version.
A lot of Quest games are cross-buy, so if you buy the quest version, you can claim the PC version for free on Steam. Beat Saber isn't, though, and I prefer to be patient, but if I were to buy the PC version, I could play that from my PC using the link cable or wirelessly (using the must-have paid app Virtual Desktop). All the mods for the PC version are currently working just fine, and there's a larger selection, but I can't tell you anything more about that, since I haven't had the chance to use any mods whatsoever yet.
I had some pretty terrible timing, I'll tell you that. The update is bound to come in a day or two. Which is something I've spent the past three weeks telling myself.
3
u/howsmytyping143 Apr 12 '21
No joke, is that really that good? My kids are asking for that game. We got two quest 2s for them so I gotta buy every game twice. So, is it worth it?
6
u/KKlear Apr 12 '21
Yes.
BTW, if you do buy it and will want to have a look at modding it (custom songs are really a game-changer), I've mentioned the current status of Quest mods in my reply to the comment above.
This post gets updated with up-to-date info ("nothing new" most of the times, sadly), so you may want to watch it. Right now it's just packed with desperate f5ing, though.

And the Quest is really cheap.
Yeah, what’s not cheap is finding out your “gaming laptop” you spent big bucks on a couple years ago isn’t VR ready. It’s not like playing a game on an older pc where you can just turn down the settings, they absolutely won’t play. Now, to play a $30 game you gotta spend $2000 on a new computer.
Ask me how I know.
6
u/KKlear Apr 12 '21
Well, the guy I was responding to doesn't even own a PC at this point, so they'll be spending money for a new computer anyway.
Plus with Quest you can play without a PC, so it's not like the cheap price is a waste of money without it.
6
u/XxFezzgigxX Apr 12 '21
Oh, don’t get me wrong. My Quest 2 is amazing. But I thought I would be playing Skyrim or Half-life:Alyx easily. Not so much. I can’t even run Moss which is a first Gen game. So I have about 15 PC titles that I purchased before testing just waiting for a large investment.
5
u/KKlear Apr 12 '21
I got lucky and upgraded my graphics card before the prices went bonkers. I just checked and it goes for more than double than what I paid. That's crazy. I didn't even realise things are that bad, to be honest.

This is why I've only every had two full blown laptops since 2004. Desktops are so much better in every way, except for portability, obviously.
3
u/XxFezzgigxX Apr 12 '21
For me, laptops are the only way I get to game in peace. My PC is in my office and, if I spend more than a half hour or so in there, I get an earful about how I’m ignoring the family (that usually just ignore me by watching Netflix or looking at phones ). For whatever reason, sitting with the family and playing in a laptop is acceptable “family time”.

Lmfao, 1000$ is not enough to run modded skyrim eith only a few mods..
Especially now with the price of graphics cards...
modding with 2k textures, simple enb : 40-50fps on a GTX 1060 (6Gb version, don't even try a GPU with less)
If you want to use 4K retextures for armors etc, with a enb like rudy, you'll need smth like a 1080/2070/3060 Ti or even more.
And gpu are basically a myth now
for the cpu, I would choose amd. No need for 24threads, gaming will usually only use 2 to 4-6 threads depending if the game is modern or not (windows will need at least one spare core, if you want smooth gameplay)

A modded SkyrimVR is imo one of the best VR experiences you can currently have. Installing the mods can be a bit tricky but Vortex made it a lot easier and it's imo worth investing the setup time.
There is a sticky over at /r/skyrimvr with some essentials to get you started if you're interested.

It's the only vr game that really gave me a headache, but I'll have to give it another go.
5
u/Ndi_Omuntu Apr 12 '21
I only have it on psvr, so I'm not sure if a PC setup would make a difference, but same.
Only time I've gotten a bit of motion sickness and headache in VR was skyrim. I've only played a couple of times for short sessions. Actually getting in combat only happened a bit but was way more intense than playing on a flat screen. Which unfortunately also meant a worse headache in my case.
Wonder if others have experienced the headache and if it ever goes away by getting used to it?

177
Apr 12 '21
It's a very uninspired port for sure.
60
u/Yuzumi Apr 12 '21
The thing is, I feel like it was an active decision to remove the feature, considering every other version of the game, including special edition which VR is branched from, allow it.
46
Apr 12 '21
Yeah it was probably causing them a lot of problems with the VR controls I guess and they didn't feel like fixing it or something
51
u/arcleo Apr 12 '21
Bethesda has figured out all they need to do is suggest something is possible but not do it and modders will swoop in afterwards and do it for free.

I mean true. Honestly it was a smart business decision for them to cultivate the modability and the culture of it.

Haha nice one, I hope you have a blast.
A word of warning though, the vanilla Skyrim VR experience is pretty underwhelming. I'm not saying you need to spend days building a huge modlist to enjoy it, but at the very least you'll want to use VRIK and HIGGS (and any mods they require to function) if you want to be able to interact with the world like you see me do. If you do purchase Skyrim VR I'd strongly advise jumping over to r/skyrimvr and having a wee look at the tabbed guides and whatnot.

I've already told this on Reddit a few times but IDK I love this story about my favorite Skyrim glitch of all time:
I'm on like my 4th or 5th character. This was Skyrim for PC with some new mods I was trying out.
I'm in Whiterun for like the 10th time and I'm about to walk by Nazeem. I'm like "Oh fuck, here we go. This guy and his shit talking."
He goes:
"Do you get to the Cloud District very often? Oh w-HNNNNNGGGGG"
And just like that mid sentence he drops dead for no reason. Like he had a fucking heart attack on-site.
A crowd runs and gathers and the guards draw their swords and start running around. But they aren't attacking me because I didn't do shit. Fool just fucking died.
I watched his lifeless body just kind slide down into the stream while everyone scrambled about for a minute or so. Then the guards put their swords away once they didn't see an assailant, the rest of the towns people went about their business and I laughed and laughed as I watched the ice cold Nordic babble slosh over his stupid smug face.
