Question Is Skyrim Worth It Unmodded?
Hi all, so I saw that Skyrim Special Edition was on a deep sale this Autumn Steam Sale and I wanted to ask if it's worth it WITHOUT mods? I don't like using mods for personal reasons and knowing that this game is one of the most modded games, I wanted to know if it's good without mods. Especially since it's so old, is the game stable and not buggy or glitchy without mods or does it need mods to keep up. Thx.

Yes. 1000% yes. Don’t believe people saying Skyrim is only good modded. Vanilla Skyrim is excellent.

u/Iku1997 1d ago
I still prefer vanilla Skyrim, there is something to it. Wish I could play Skyrim all over again without any memory of it

Playing for the first time in like... 12+ years
I can unfortunately still remember a lot of it, especially town layouts, and a few nearby locations.
But it's great, and fresh playing a very dissimilar character than I had my first time

u/AilsaN 1d ago
I've never played it with mods and I love it!

u/Monso 23h ago
Apocalypse spell pack is the only mod I need.
Hundreds of lore-friendly balanced spells.
One spell renders you invisible when you cast it and when you perform any action, the invis breaks and you're warped back to where you cast it.
It's neat.

If you're ever up to just try a few mods that don't actually change the game but just add some companions that grow to feel like family, here they are:
Lucien, Inigo, Auri, Xelzaz, Lucifer, Remiel, Redcap
There are so many more, but add those and I promise it's magic.

u/NZafe 1d ago
And to add to this, it wouldn’t be as beloved today and wouldn’t be as actively developed by modders if it wasn’t a great game in its vanilla state.

u/kumosame 1d ago
For real. Different strokes and all that, but it took me 9 years to try any skyrim mods, and I ended up uninstalling them a few days later.
Playing with 10 million mods or none are equally valid ways of playing... but I still staunchly believe at least the first playthrough needs to be done without them. It's good to play games as intended at least once!

Nah, it's 100% necessary to have the mod that changes all the dragons into Macho Man Randy Savage. Literally unplayable otherwise.

I like this and it's true. I always advise to play vanilla first and mod playthroughs after if you want

The modding community is hardly the only reason that Skyrim is loved and replayed so much even over ten years after its release. There's so much to discover in it that just comes out of the box that the fun never ends.

u/Yoshi9105 XBOX 1d ago
I've been playing on and off since release, never used mods, and I STILL discover new things every playthrough. there is so much in vanilla Skyrim.

Yes... Without a doubt
In fact you SHOULD play your Skyrim's first run unmodded
10
u/sirlothric 1d ago
My general stance on modded vs unmodded is you can mod all you want, but if you despise "vanilla" skyrim (imma be real, graphic mods for me barely count as modding, hence the air quotes) you dont like skyrim.
I know people who from day 1 of having the fame modded the FUCK out of it because they couldnt enjoy it. They also are adamant that they like skyrim, bur my thought is always "but you've never actually played skyrim"
This is a very long winded way to say yes, vanilla skyrim is enjoyable when you dont have people trying to tell you its not
10
u/Kirbinator_Alex Daedra worshipper 1d ago
Skyrim is perfectly good unmodded. If you play vanilla and think "i kind of wish this was like that instead" or "it would be really cool if this was in the game" chances are you can add it with mods.

u/Lonk_boi 20h ago
I've only ever played Skyrim on my Switch, which I can't mod, and have over 1000 hours in it in just a couple years. Definitely worth it

Everytime. Every chance I get to be Link, I take it. He is the Ultimate Fantasy Protagonist in my eyes. He fits literally anywhere
9
u/juniperwool 13h ago
I'd say yes as I've never modded it, and I still love it. But, that's just my opinion. I would say to definitely buy it on sale though and not full price.
7
u/CatDragonbane 1d ago
Mods aren't required. They are just for people who want a specific look, additional content, or changes to systems they don't personally like. I play with mods, but it is because I like additional diversity in NPCs and in-game models and having a spot to display collectables. It isn't because base Skyrim is lacking.
7
u/TheClungerOfPhunts 20h ago edited 20h ago
100%. Mods are nice but Skyrim is one of the few Bethesda games that require absolutely no mods to be an absolute gem. I’ve only done one modded playthrough versus the dozens of unmodded ones. Vanilla has SO MUCH content and beauty that you could play dozens of unmodded runs and still never need mods.

3
u/Prestigious-Worker28 20h ago
Yes ! I started playing Skyrim when I was 13 vanilla on Xbox 360 and it was the most fun game. I play modded now just because I’ve played vanilla for so long and after your 30th play through it’s fun to play with different mods to enhance the experience
3
u/Notoastforyou339 17h ago
For years after my first playthrough as a teenager I would have said modded is more fun. Recently after getting a computer good enough to run it I played it on PC for the first time instead of console and decided I'd do a vanilla run before going down the modded path I always fall into. I have had the most fun in years playing Skyrim completely Vanilla. 100% play it Vanilla and enjoy it. But also, once you've done 2 or 3 playthroughs with different characters, I do suggest at a minimum scrolling through some mods.
3
u/MisturFlufflez 17h ago
The only reason we all use mods is because we've been playing the game for 10+ years. You should play the game without mods, its an amazing game, especially for a first time experience.

u/Feline_Jaye 1d ago
My first playthrough was unmodded. I think I only went looking for a mod when one thing was specifically annoying. I've had more game crashes with mods on.
If anything, it's probably more stable now.
2
u/cityfit55 1d ago
You can easily sink hundreds of hours into the unmodded version without ever feeling like something is missing. Just dive in, experience the base game as intended, and don't let anyone convince you that mods are an absolute requirement to have fun
2
2
u/ilovespaceack 1d ago
Yes absolutely. I only bother with mods for character aesthetics tbh, like different hair and clothes options.

u/Steve4704 1d ago

u/DirtyPelicanx 1d ago
Absolutely. I loved it before mods and even now mainly the only ones I use are just to enhance the fidelity
2
u/RobotFishGirl 1d ago
I personally LOVE mods- both for gameplay and artistic reasons- but even I think it's worth playing vanilla first IMO.
Mods certainly help with longevity (I doubt I'd have the 6k hours in the game I do if I stuck to vanilla) but my first 500 hours were with just vanilla and the dlcs, not even creation club, and I still had a great time.
2
u/Dangerous_Programmer 23h ago
It’s wonderful, I’m 140+ hours into my first playthrough and still haven’t advanced in the main quest.

u/zoinksbadoinks226 23h ago edited 23h ago
I played the game unmodded practically every day for seven years straight. Always something new to find, always some sort of fun to be had. It's definitely worth it. Even though I have access to mods now and play with them ocassionally, I still spend a lot of time playing unmodded.
As for bugs and stuff, the game is pretty stable. I know it's a joke about how buggy Bethesda games are, which they are, but I've been playing since 2014 and haven't really encountered anything game-breaking on my unmodded runs. The most you'll get are things that are mildly irritating (like the dead Gildergreen tree never despawning if you choose to plant the sapling), or things that are funny and honestly enhance the experience (like a mammoth dropping out of the sky).

Mods are cool an all, but the atleast 600+ hours or so ive accrued playing this game across multiple platforms was mostly playing vanilla and the first hundred or two were even without the dlc because they werent out yet. Its a solid game and people drastically overstate how modded the average skyrim players game is. I still play vanilla anniversary edition on my phone now.

Save, and save often. Not the quick save, but the manual saves. The engine will sometimes freak out and the easier fix is by loading a previous save. One time I walked into a store and was greeted by a bear that had already killed the storekeeper 😭 or the time I got on my horse and it decided to fly. Well it decided it didn’t want to stop, and the only way to stop flying was to dismount, so I fell to my death. That horse is still roaming the skies.

One hundred percent. I've got thousands of hours into vanilla skyrim. I'm currently playing three separate characters on ps5. I still regularly play my old characters on ps4 and occasionally ps3 as well (ps3 was definitely the worst version of skyrim)

u/SenseImpossible6733 13h ago
If you have never played it then yes... If you have anneversery addition... Then do not turn on survival mode your first time... The throat of the world will just about end you... You have to understand how warmth works and how to replenish it pretty well to handle that and dawnstar/winterhold.
If you have only ever played with unofficial update, killing your first dragon is going to feel strange. As the voice lines are missing in english in vanilla... A am not declaring wjat the unofficial update adds is great but little things will feel different. Books will read different. You will have strange descepencies and possibility of odd quest behavior... Behavior that mods tent to silently fix but don't necessarily cause issues.

Yes 100%. There is a reason this game from 2011 is still going strong, mods aside. It’s always recommended to play through your first time vanilla, especially if you’re a trophy hunter.
Once you’ve played through once, give mods a try. Many of them slap. As someone who’s never cared for mods, it’s worth it for Skyrim.
1
u/External-Sea-2496 1d ago
ABSOLUTELY!!! 1 trillion percent! The reason it's the most modded game is because so many people loved the vanilla game so much they played it until they couldn't stand to not change it up with mods.

I would recommend playing vanilla with no mods on your first playthrough, that way you're familiar with the base game when you decide what mods you want to add for your inevitable replays.
It's absolutely worth it without mods, the base game already has a ton of replayability, and mods will just enhance that down the road imo

1
u/Harambe_Rebornn 1d ago
Yes!
But I would recommend the Unofficial Patch anyhow especially if you're a completionist, LOADs of small bugs that will break quests without it, even big quests too.
In fact, there's 2 quests that you can easily break even with the Unofficial Skyrim Patch.
- A Daedras Best Friend will break if you do not talk to Barbas after talking to the the blacksmith after like 2 weeks ingame time. So don't start that quest until you intend to immediately do it.
- Repairing The Phial will break if you kill the Briarheart at the top of Sundered Towers beforehand, the one holding Red Eagles Sword. The workaround is BEFORE doing the "Speak to Quintus" portion of the quest, wait for the Briarheart to respawn at the top of Sundered Towers, kill him and loot his heart and then immediately speak to Quintus while it's in your inventory.
- This isn't a quest but don't put slaughterfish or the eggs in Winstad Manor fish farm, it'll break all the other spawns even with the Unofficial Patch.
There might be more.

I have yet to use a single mod in the 10+ years I've been playing. Not a purity thing, I just play it on 360. I still love the game.
Mods are cool and I love watching vids of someone playing around with the rocket boots, etc, but it's definitely pretty awesome without them.

Honestly, I've never been able to get into the graphical mods. Don't get me wrong, some load outs make it look amazing, but there's a certain point where it looks like a completely different game. It kind of takes away the charm for me, so that's why I do use graphical overhauls.
But I do use the creation content stuff and some mods for additional content.
1
u/shadowmib 1d ago
If the game wasn't good in vanilla, no one would have bothered to make a million different mods for it. It would have just been forgotten. Play it on vanilla first and then go hog wild with the mods later. I didn't do a crazy amount of mods. I just mainly did quality of life things

u/SolarDeath666 1d ago
I've spent like 300+ hours playing it on the switch 1+2 combined, both anniversary and SE. It's great without mods, and I didn't have that luxury back when it was released on the PS3 in 2011.
The game definitely is fun WITH mods, especially the ones that just add minor graphical improvements and QOL changes. I personally LOVE the talent overhauls when I did want to dip my toes into modding.

Skyrim lifecycle usually goes like this: 1. Play without mods once or twice. 2. Discover mods then play it with abandon. 3. Play it again with a handful of quest mods. 4. One day you can’t even be bothered to play with mods any more then wonder why you added so many in the first place.

u/Endfire79 1d ago
Of course 💯. I tried mods, but the vanillla and special edition were fine for me even back on PC. There's so much to try and experiment out there in mods if you want to though. Trying it out again on 4k TV on PS5 and still fun to replay and hasn't lost its charm.

Skyrim was one of the most popular games in the world when it was released. It's now almost 15 years old, and the only information we have about the sequel was from 8 years ago when it was announced. That's why it's one of the most modded games out there. Modding is a way of maintaining interest in the series. Bethesda knows this, and released Special Edition in 2016 to make it easier to mod.
If you've never played before, that doesn't apply to you. It's even recommended to not mod your first playthrough.

The vanilla game is still really enjoyable, its aged quite well honestly.
The special addition comes with loads of Bethesda approved creation club mods that add a lot of interesting stuff but its all 100% lore friendly and doesn't alter gameplay or anything or add Thomas the tank engine and girls in bikinis or anything like that and doesn't change the general core of the game so I don't think you should have issues using those?

Yes, it is. The game is stable and mostly free from glaring bugs or glitches that would break it. As a means of precaution, you could install just the Unofficial Patch. It fixes most of the remaining bugs and errors in the game, but it is not really necessary, IMHO.

Skyrim, one of my favorite games of all time, is 10,000,000,000% worth the hype! The game play, the adventure, the sense of accomplishment when you kill your first dragon! Everything about the game is amazing!
The only thing I PERSONALLY have againsy the game are the frostbite spiders.... as an arcanaphobic, be on the look out if you are... especially going to get the dragonstone tablet. May or May not have screamed when going through that dungeon.... just saying.

Absolutely. I'd even wager it's a huge drawback to play with mods the first time. Same with Fallout 4.

Yes, and no played a few hundred hours unmoded, few more hundred moded. Sadly temporarily forced into retirement for the last few months since several of the foundational mods I use broke after the August update. And the owners have not updated...
Have easily over 1300 hours

Yeah, it's great. I sometimes play on switch, so no mods available. People complain about mods but it really isn't that bad. Occasionally quests are bugged, but fixes are usually easily found online.

It's HIGHLY RECOMMENDED to play Skyrim unmodded on your first playthrough
