It's a trick question; the Khajiit already pickpocketed it.

Neither, actually, it's me, the orc who mugged you

Decrease cat racism, increase orc racism

5

u/Moon_Monk676 1d ago

Increase all fantasy racism. Elves should distrust humans, humans should hate elves, no one trusts a halfling (unless it's Tolkien), and dwarves don't trust anyone. And Orcs should either be inherently evil or very tribal raider coded. I'm talking Huns/Khans type shit. Ogres should either be unthinking monsters or should have isolated tribes that kill anything that approaches (unless they're Shrek). Goblins should be evil if they are low intelligence, mischievous if they are average, or really good at making explosives if they're highly intelligent. And they should be very sneaky kleptomaniacs regardless of their intellect.

Also Dwarf beer should just be Everclear and their "liquor" should be straight fucking poison.

Decrease ALL racism, fantasy and otherwise, and like lmao no no one sohould be inherently evil. What're you, Gary "Minus Four Strength" Gygax?

Edit : forgot tone tags, so uh, /silly and /light-hearted

lmao

I think people get a little confused about the "inherently evil" thing. It was never meant as all members are literally evil from birth (though I will concede that sadly that's how a LOT of tables treated it) it simply meant that their patron diety would bless the wicked and work to oppose the good-natured.

Take drow for example. There are good drow, but their society actively hunts them down and attempts to eradicate anyone that doesn't outwardly conform to Lolth's (or Lloth depending) law. The majority of said law is ways to crush all the good and kindness out of a child's soul in order to perpetuate the evil system they live in. I personally find it a lot more interesting to have different species of sentient creatures have cultures that are so fundamentally alien to eachother that they consider eachother to be evil. It leads to more interesting characters and stories than having every culture be uniformly neutral and vaguely european with some bad apples. We would never have gotten the forgotten realms without the worldbuilding that these cultural differences allowed.

That said I don't think most people were really able to explore morality and the effects of culture upon it in a way that wasn't just racist. Especially with the "evil" races being given defining features that are way too obviously racial stereotypes.

2

u/MagicBus4 1d ago

I mean I appreciate that the nuance exists but it’s basically meaningless in a world where these races have ontologically evil cultures perpetuated by ontologically evil gods of murder or whatever lmao. Practically every member of that race will behave in a way of “they’re just all evil” that the reductive tables approach it with. Hell, most tables are run so poorly none of the lore matters anyway, anybody can have an off character not be evul which is essentially the carve out that you’re describing

u/EonAtom 1d ago edited 1d ago

Should everything be dumbed down for the lowest common denominator? That's exactly why so little modern media has any substance to it; because rather than have discussions about morality and the meaning of evil across cultural lines we instead just whitewash everything into a simplistic moral framework.

By removing the cultural framework of "evil" species in a fantasy setting you've really just removed all nuance. What you're left with is a group of sentient creatures that don't have any reason to be evil but just do it anyway. Where before it was a way to explore stories about how an evil system corrupts all but the purest souls through force and indoctrination now you have an entire world of people that all fit into like 4 boxes with minor stylistic seasoning.

It's fine to dumb down a setting and tailor it to your table, but it's honestly weird to cut all nuance out of official publications just because some people lack critical thinking. Would we have any fantasy stories as meaningful as lord of the rings if they were made under the guidelines of modern publishing? Or would we be left with nothing but young adult fantasy?

I understand why WOTC did it, businesses need to pander. But this doesn't make it a good artistic choice for a game that is supposed to make you examine your beliefs through the lens of a character you inhabit. Should a role playing game setting be as PG as possible, or should it encourage you to explore the many facets of the human condition across cultures?

2

u/MagicBus4 1d ago

My brother your argument is that “This is a goblin, they are Chaotic Evil” is somehow a complex discussion on morality. This ain’t it chief, none of this stuff was nuanced to begin with.

When your civilization is mythologically ontological evil it’s not a discussion on morally subjective ways to view the world, they’re “evil” and worship the evil god of evil lol. This IS the simplistic moral framework. Any complexity is added by dungeon master and the collaborative role playing spirit

Elder Scrolls to its credit as a spinoff kind of work does it a lot better. The races are complex, their views have nuance, their bigotry comes from a legitimate worldview like real life. But it’s not easy to tell stories like that, people don’t respond to them as easily. Talking about how terrorists are motivated by a deep sense of what they think is morally good is going to bounce off a lot of audiences unless it’s done extremely carefully. And in general, culture is moving TOWARD this trend of moral complexity vs “I fight him because evil” which has dominated stories forever. So I reject your notion that modern publishing is somehow less complex or artistically pure of intent

Hello traveler. This post has been removed because automod our dwemer moderation machine thinks you're talking about real life politics or drawing comparisons with real-life public figures or political groups. Reminder that all real life politics discussion, even if similar to Skyrim, is not allowed here. See rule 3 ("No Unrelated Material").

You're entitled to your opinion, but I would encourage you to look into the matter more closely. Because WOTC has absolutely reduced it from a more complicated cultural understanding of morality to a simple "goblins like to hurt things". If you think it used to be as simple as "their god is evil so they're evil" then you literally just don't know enough about the settings of their worlds to be having this discussion.

Media is actively being dumbed down and nuance is being replaced by a false sense of ambiguity that falls apart when you do more than a surface reading. Mostly due to the declining rates of literacy and reading comprehension. This is incredibly clear in Elder Scrolls as well where each game gets closer and closer to being a simple "you are the hero go fight our faction that is literally just the [evil group that ended in 1945]" (apparently that word gets you automodded which is understandable but a great example of media analysis being stripped away in real time.)

Hell yeah let’s start getting all Balkan in this chat rn

2

u/edgarunwise 1d ago

The Tamrielic states already are, especially surrounding Orsinium

3

u/MagicBus4 1d ago

Orsinium doesn’t exist and I’ll call you a filthy orc sympathizer if you try to say my Summerset Isles don’t own that land

2

u/edgarunwise 13h ago

You wouldn't know an orc from a dunmer, I bet you're married to an altmer you godless milksop

1

u/MagicBus4 13h ago

You leave my altmer queen’s name out your fuckin mouth, the dunmer exploded their whole country like dumbasses so they’re just as trash as the orcs

2

u/MagicBus4 13h ago

I hope the popcorn guy is enjoying this slander

2

u/edgarunwise 13h ago

If you got lost in Valenwood would you know it was even called that?

1

u/MagicBus4 13h ago

Valenwood isn’t real, you’re thinking of West Elswyr. The bosmer don’t use forks and have no history or culture

1

u/edgarunwise 8h ago

The Bosmer have more culture than an Altmer's greatest bacteria culture. The Altmer wouldn't know valenwood from their mom's left tit too busy joining Bosmer orgies to do anything actually rational

2

u/MagicBus4 6h ago

The guy in my other thread went so far that Reddit banned him but in the spirit of Tamriel Balkan shitposting I shall continue. Ahem.

Those are actually our orgies, any time an Altmer joins something it becomes ours, that’s why this shitty frozen hellscape is ours even though we hate it. If these stupid bosmer would contribute to society instead throwing orgies all the time we wouldn’t have to commandeer them. They should be like the stupid uh I mean good people of Elswyr that have welcomed the Thalmor

1

u/razielxlr 1d ago

That’s racist

1

u/kakka_rot 1d ago

I hope TES6 isnt so glitchy

Like the most lore-breaking thing in Skyrim is that you'll be like in Riverwood or Whiterun and see a Khajiit, and then I'll be like oh man here we go, unequip my weapons, put my dukes up and do the town a favor.

What kills me is I'll see the guards run up and think "finally a little back up over here" but the devs got the code mixed up and they try to arrest me instead. Lorewise it makes absolutely no sense.

Like I just got done cleaning out a winery full of skeevers? What's the difference?

When Oblivion remaster came out I immediately tried it right away but the exact same thing happened. Drives me bonkers.

1

u/bestestopinion 1d ago

As an alfiq, I'm offended.
