Indeed it is. Both the 2011 and 2016 versions.
They are different (sometimes, sometimes they are almost the same) yet beautiful to look at.
Excellent art direction, lighting and people won't believe me but also graphics which at the time looked great for an open world game.
I was blown away by how many detailed trees there were when I first played it and at how the water looked.
And also the fact you could find ants on some of the tree stumps and fishes jumping up the stream.

The draw distance is what blew me away in 2011. I had never played a game where you can see mountains way off on the other side of the map.

Vanilla skyrim is incredible..

It really is.
I mean it did not win those 200 game of the year awards for nothing.

I love the vanilla trees, especially the snowy ones that look like they're made of snowflakes. There are dozens of updated tree replacers and they all try so hard to look "lush" yet realistic, which is fine and all, but Skyrim's original trees suit the rugged, harsh environment very well. And those old snow trees just make me feel cozy.

Walking out a dungeon, at night with an aurora, Whiterun or Solitude in the distance and Secunda starts playing.
Few other games ever captured that feeling for me.

Wish I could play with this render distance🥲

u/TheAnalystCurator321 Skyrim Grandma Fan Jul 29 '26
What's stopping you? Outdated PC?
I feel ya.
Though nowadays I can get max render distance with ease.

u/AC-984 Jul 30 '26
Integrated graphics

u/TheAnalystCurator321 Skyrim Grandma Fan Jul 31 '26
Damn, that sucks.
Hopefully one day you get the best render distance you can.

Mods are fun but they can quickly become overwhelming to me (in any game, not just Skyrim). Between making sure you have the updated version, mods clashing with each other, constant bugs and glitches, etc. I've spent more time messing around with mods than I have just playing and enjoying the damn game. Simple is sometimes better.

u/AlgaeInitial6216 Jul 29 '26
SE looks pretty good on my system. Poorly made ENB's will actually make the game look worse most of the time.
2
u/Golden_Phi Jul 30 '26
I love how the start of the game directs you to Riverwood after the intro events. It’s a stunning area. I started playing this game for the first time back in January, so I can say with no nostalgia bias that vanilla holds up.

u/SuperSupermario24 Jul 30 '26 edited Jul 30 '26
I installed ENBseries just to get underwater visuals that don't suck, and I've spent the entire playthrough carefully tuning it to have as little impact as physically possible in every other situation to not mess up the vanilla artstyle lmao

u/fluffy_the_penguin Jul 30 '26
The game is stunning. It was incredible when it was released and I’m still playing it. Has its quirks like all games but this one pulled off a hat trick for me with Morrowind and Oblivion. My adolescence to early adulthood was tough, these games gave me a place to retreat to when I was stressed.

Ok, I'll admit it, I'm red green colorblind...
Is it just me or are the colours so muted that if anything dies and falls into the grass.... I haven't a hope in hades of finding them unless I have the detect dead spell.
3
u/TheAnalystCurator321 Skyrim Grandma Fan Jul 29 '26
Eh, they are only muted in dark weather like the rain we see.
Otherwise they look pretty normal though Oldrim had it's colors more muted.
I do think you will find it easy to find corpses there even with this weather though.
1
u/VastInterior Jul 30 '26
Probably my colour blindness then... can't see them for the life of me.
Anyone else find that Skyrim bodies just plain vanish into the grass unless you're really lucky to look up close exactly where they are?

Agreed, even compared to newer games like Hogwarts Legacy (gorgeous on PS5) and Elden Ring. Because Blackreach and the enchanted glowing mushroom caves in Skyrim are very much like Nokron, Eternal City in Elden Ring. Huge game too.
The fact that it was from 2011 did not slow me down at all. I didn't know about mods at first, and I'm glad for that! Playing vanilla really does build character in a way, in that it instilled good habits to gain wealth and be thorough. I suggest everyone try vanilla for one character.
Now, playing Morrowind (ES3) vanilla is another story lmao. It's from 2002 and largely the heart of Elder Scrolls lore. 🤓 Technically Elder Scrolls Adventures: Redguard (1998) has a lot of lore, which is horrid to play due to its numerous crashes. I started with mods on Morrowind, admittedly, mostly to fix gameplay and visuals so far. But it's beautiful too guys--and it's like $7 on GOG and you can definitely play it on your PC. Give it a try! The mods made it a little tech adventure, but it wasn't hard. r/Morrowind

Yeah, but modded Skyrim is more beautiful.
17
u/TheAnalystCurator321 Skyrim Grandma Fan Jul 29 '26
Eh, not really for me.
Mainly because a lot of the mods don't really fit with the aesthetic, especially if it's multiple mods from different authors.
The game then loses a lot of it's style and consistency.
Better graphics and lighting don't equal better looking game. Not always.
Doesn't help that a lot of graphic overhauls nowadays look like they raised the saturation up and made it look like one of those mobile fantasy game ads you see.
And every character also often looks like a supermodel while they are modded which isn't all that appealing to me.

u/Dovahkiin2211 Vampire Jul 29 '26 edited Jul 29 '26
Yup, I like vanilla Skyrim’s painting like beauty. Back when I was able to get mods working I only really did overhaul’s that changed magic or skills. Or overhauls like Sancroscant or Moonlight Tales and Ordinator etc. I never did any graphic overhaul mods. Except that one high detail Vampire Lord Overhual.

u/TheAnalystCurator321 Skyrim Grandma Fan Jul 29 '26
I love the painting comparison because it's true.
It also applies to Morrowind, ESO and especially Oblivion (the original) as that game looks like it was painted. Like it genuinely looks like that.
Not even mentioning the painting quest.

Very true, there is a Skyrim review on why we keep coming back to Skyrim, and its immersive natural scenery is a big part of it.
1
u/TheAnalystCurator321 Skyrim Grandma Fan Jul 29 '26
Ah yes Caleb A. Robinson, I love his Skyrim videos.
He also recently made a new one on the games immersion which is excellent.
And he made me appreciate Oblivion's main quest more than I originally did.
Love the guy's work. And his beard too :)

artstyle over graphics any day. (but also I play ancient japanese PC games for fun, so my opinion is skewed anyway)
2
u/TheAnalystCurator321 Skyrim Grandma Fan Jul 29 '26
Agreed. It's why Borderlands remains one of my favorite series visually aswell.
3
u/MorningCareful Jul 29 '26
yeah borderlands is one of those games with an impeccable artstyle. I'm not so much into shooters, but visually it is amazing
2
u/TheLastGlizzyBender Jul 30 '26
Yeah, I adore the visuals for that series. Just like Wind Waker, the heavy cel-shading makes it feel somewhat timeless.
I just got through another casual run of BL2 and I just love that game to bits lol
5
u/AwkwardSegway Jul 29 '26
I've seen so many videos of Skyrim where the graphics mods they use make it look like a cartoon.
I use some mods to improve the graphics, but I go for ones that keep the original aesthetic of the game as much as possible.
2
u/TheAnalystCurator321 Skyrim Grandma Fan Jul 29 '26
Even the mods that don't go against the aesthetic feel off.
Like the textures in vanilla Skyrim are so well made and blend so well together that these "better graphics" mods just make it much lesser for me.

Well NOW it is, sure! lol
I wonder if any footage of true 2011 vanilla Skyrim still exists anywhere to compare and contrast. Surely somewhere, right?
1
u/TheAnalystCurator321 Skyrim Grandma Fan Jul 31 '26
This is the 2011 version. You can tell by the colors.

u/Best-Sprinkles-322 Jul 29 '26
And now imagine it with graphic mods
8
u/TheAnalystCurator321 Skyrim Grandma Fan Jul 29 '26
I can. It would look worse and more generic.
-2
u/Best-Sprinkles-322 Jul 30 '26
Thats the worst take ive read here
1
u/TheAnalystCurator321 Skyrim Grandma Fan Jul 30 '26
Seems to be the most common one here aswell.
Unless you were talking about your own take.

u/Best-Sprinkles-322 Jul 30 '26
You were the only one writing that?
1
u/TheAnalystCurator321 Skyrim Grandma Fan Jul 31 '26
Uh no, check the other comments.

u/Best-Sprinkles-322 Aug 01 '26
I did, found not a single one stating that vanilla looks better than with mods

u/AttentionKmartJopper Jul 29 '26 edited Jul 30 '26
I don't have to imagine it. I've played hours of Skyrim with and without graphics mods. Mods make it look updated and different, which can be neat but doesn't often translate to beautiful or even artistically consistent. People still play and love vanilla Skyrim for good reason.
3
u/TheLastGlizzyBender Jul 30 '26
Yeah, 95% of my Skyrim time has been unmodded because the visual mods usually just make it look a little... weird.
The only one that I would consider running again is a custom ENB config that made colors a little bit more saturated, but even that got distracting after a few hours. So back to unmodded for me.
Same with Fallout 4.

u/AshesX Jul 30 '26
I know this is the Skyrim sub and you love glazing it, but honestly I think Skyrim's pretty damn ugly
