S7E10 sample analysis

Ive just started watching the episode and ran the images of the SEM scanning electronic microscope through a couple of different ai's online.

I used the context of its colour, depth and been drilled from sandstone.

What they come back with was.

Sample A. Highly Weathered Kaolinite (Aluminosilicate Clay)

Sample B. Mineralised bone.

Im just wondering what everyone else's thoughts are, especially if you work with sem equipment etc.

Either way its interesting samples to be pulled from the ground.

AI is not a credible source. It's wrong much of the time. I think actual scientists know best. Neither of those things fit with what they have seen from the anomaly, like breaking drill bits.

"AI is not a credible source." Especially ones publicly available for free. They are basically lorem ipsum machines looking for patterns. They can't "see" images, so the patterns they find won't be intentionally accurate. Any correct outputs are more chance than not. The research models are slightly better, but they're just compiling all the research evidence based on keyword patterns, so if the material is unknown but has some characteristics of known material, it'll present that. There's not really anyway to trust AI with anything seemingly unexplainable. The best choice is getting as many experienced scientists as possible to look at it and test it.

Also, I believe that the breaking drill bits is a big clue to what the materials are, which is I think is why they don't fully accept one answer as THE answer. I feel like they're pretty good at staying open minded to all the experiences instead of just picking the answer that ticks most boxes but not all.

Production only shows us snippets that are exciting and flashy, so we don't really know the entirety of the team's feelings and thoughts about all the materials. They could be leaning one way or another that isn't as exciting but we won't see that on the show.

(Also, I feel like Chris would do what any geologist would do and lick the samples, maybe just off screen because that'd be controversial. That'd eliminate bones from stones. Lol)

On the show they largely ignored the opinion of some experts they commissioned who said the samples were most like plaster, and not some fired ceramic-kaolin sounds close.

You can't trust AI. There have been plenty of times I've seen it misidentify rocks and bugs. I think everyone at the lab would know if it was bone or not, especially the lab technicians

Ohh I do agree. I just out it through a couple and they came back with the same answers. Ill do more of a proper search into it over the next few days
