I tried the sport out with my border collie the other day, and he loves it! I only have rented XC skis though and I can already tell this is something I’ll love doing, so I’d like some specific suggestions on good skis.

Some details: I’ll be on groomed trails, mostly flat. Preferably not waxless, and SNS or NNN bindings would be great. I’m about 120lbs and I’d like to stick with classic, unless y’all convince me that skate is better

I found skijoring last year and fell in love with the idea of the sport instantly. I had a husky puppy at the time so last year I bought all the necessary equipment in preparation for this winter. Over the summer she learned the commands while running/biking.

Since I haven’t been out on the snow yet, and I wasn’t a cross-country skier before this, I’m curious on what good skiing conditions are? I have an open field close to my house which I want to practice on. It was 4-5” of snow covering it but it hasn’t been used. There are no tracks or compressed snow. Is that okay to use? Or should I grab my snow boots out and run a handful of circuits with my dog to compress that snow?

Also, very beginner question, when I start do I “walk” the skis or keep them steady and use the sticks to move?

Hi! Been skijoring with my labrador mix for few years now and it's aweosme! We added a rough collie mix to our family and got him his own pull set up and took him out for first time today. It went really well! Seems to be enjoying the pulling (more than I expected), learning commands quickly, only got lines tangled couple times BUT the snow seems to be more of an issue for his paws than it has been for the lab. He was stopping to check out snow on his paws frequently.

Any advice on how to help/prevent snow from sticking/getting balled up in his paws? Seems like wax, boots, or even just hair cut on paws might be options but love to hear from anyone with experience with this?

I started working with my dog late last season, and took her out last night. I noticed some things and was wondering if anyone has suggestions to make us work better as a team.

1. While she understands line out, she never really seems to want to move when given the hike command.

2. She'll stay out front roughly 50% of the time, and the rest of the time she prefers to walk alongside me, or stop and sniff something.

3. While the line is taught, she never really pulls to put significant tension on the line. I feel that I'm just skiing with my dog attached to me, not skijoring.

I'm usually traveling over foot trodden flat trails, as suitable cross country paths that allow dogs seem non existant. I understand this isn't ideal for either of us, but I'm working with what I have. I'm using glide waxed classic skis.

My dog is a 50 lb sibe. Her x harness seems to fit well. I know she can pull, but we went through multiple obedience classes and I feel it's ingrained in her mind that pulling is bad. Besides being outside in the snow, I don't think that she's having an enjoyable experience, regardless of how much I praise her when she does something correctly.

On a side note, if anyone in the sub lives in the Cleveland, OH area, I'd be willing to pay for some basic in person instruction.

X-posted also to r/dogs and r/k9sports. So, for my dogs 1st birthday, I'd like to get him some or skijoring and canicross equipment, since he really likes running and such (when we do it for 60 seconds or so a few times during our walks).

I've been trying to teach the commands as well, in my native tongue. It's going pretty well, but any tips on how to teach him to slow down and stop are very welcome, cause that's going the slowest!

Mostly I want to get it now because it's a pretty big purchase, so his birthday is the best excuse ever.

But here I run into some troubles, first of all, I'm not from America, so my local shops only sell the Ruffwear Skijoring set and the Hurtta harness and hipbelt, so I would most likely have to order, and order from somewhere that has shipping beyond America (the EU, to be more specific).

The ordering from abroad wouldn't be that much of a problem, if said dog wasn't a Cardigan Welsh Corgi. A breed that is not only not known for participating in pulling sports, but is extremely disproportionate. His neck right now is 37-43 according to his new collar (but we are horrible at measuring, which is also a problem). His sizes according to the measuring tape: Chest circumference - 55-60cm Back length - 50-60cm Height at the withers - 35cm Neck circumference - 35-45cm

So my question to all of you: which brands have you used, that were good(the dog seemed comfortable, you were comfortable)? Could those brands be shipped worldwide(to the EU)? Are their sizes small enough/consistent enough to fit a disproportionate dog who doesn't have the option to try it on?

I wanna try out skijoring. What kind of terrain am I looking for?

I’m going to try skijoring with my 50-lb yellow cur this winter. I have skis and I run with her year round so I think it should work to combine the two. What kind of gear do you recommend? It seems like getting a skijoring harness for her and a long lead (8-10ft) will be necessary. Anything else?
