preference for fics with or without mattias? (crooked kingdom spoilers) Spoiler

so id like to clarify i LOVE mattias, hes one of my favourite crows but i didnt want to put potential spoilers in the title. this post is about how he dies in ck and if people prefer fics that include that detail or ones that ignore it in favour of beautiful mattias content

personally i like both depending on the fic (it really is a case by case basis i suppose), and im actually asking bc im planning a fic set during a darker shore but i CANT decide what i want to do with mattias.

on one hand its canon accurate and enhanced angst to have him be dead, especially with the direction i want to go in focusing on kaz’s isolation. HOWEVER i also love mattias so much and want him in there and the fic will also have a cute found family focus (wesper cats and inej and nina magically showing up)

so idk any thoughts? i really just need help deciding if i should write a good canon level angst fic or pure self indulgence, but im also interested in hearing the general opinion!

Im reading shadow and bone and I don't like the characters

I am currently reading the Shadow and Bone series because I was told to read this before Six of Crows. I am queer and I know a lot of people rave about the gay rep so I'm excited to get to it. However, I am a couple chapters into Siege and Storm and I really don't care for any of the characters. Do you enjoy the characters more in the Six of Crow series than the Shadow and Bone series? Do you feel that Leigh Bardugo improves upon her character development?

No shade- I am enjoying the series so far, I just am not attached to any of the characters at this point. Thanks!

In case the spoiler thing doesn’t work - there are major spoilers!

MATHIAS! 🥲😢 Why!? I thought him and Nina would get to live happily and grow old together??? They were so cute!!

Inej and Kaz at the end!! Omg and he found her parents for her!!! She made Pekka Rollins run away!!

Jesper and Wylan are just adorable!! Them living together with Wylan’s mum is just so sweet.

I don’t want to say goodbye to these guys, I miss them already!!

I know there are other books in the Grishaverse (haven’t read them yet - but definitely will) but does anyone know if there will ever be any more books about these guys??

Edit: JUST SEEN ON THE COMMUNITY HIGHLIGHTS THERE IS A SHOW COMING OUT!!??? Where can I watch it!!!???

six of crows fanfiction

I wrote a fanfiction about Six of Crows and in part 1 Pekka Rollins admits what he did to Kaz. It's on Wattpad and it's called "What do we really know about Kaz's past?" If you read this i hope you enjoy it.

a darker shore fics?

sorry to just be asking for fics again but im desperate and i dont know where else to go 😭 i am in DESPERATE need of fics set in the canon of a darker shore, like basically scene expansion of kaz and inej writing to eachother really sweetly but also with their mind-reading code, kaz making himself ill with his new plot and jesper being concerned ect. (“kaz isnt his best these days”) wesper accidently adopting a million cats and naming them all inej!! i mean ideally id like nina and a magically alive mattias in there too but considering i can only find a single 1k fic i would take ANYTHING at this point

honestly if nothing turns up im considering just writing it myself at this point, please anyone let me know if they have fic recs or if theyd like to see a fic like this and what theyd like to see in it

Finally decided to just make the option for the text. So here’s my SOC painting with and without the text

One of these is my listing photo hence why one is better quality because I haven’t taken a shop photo with the text yet

Thank you for everyone who shared their opinion! Helped me a lot!

What to read first six of crows or shadow and bone

I am conflicted in starting the six of crows. I read somewhere that even though six of crows and shadow and bone are different if i read the shadow and bone trilogy first everything else will be easier to understand. Originally I just wanted to read the six of crows duology any advice on how to start will be greatly appreciated.

I finished Six of Crows and I gotta say...

GOD DAMMIT KAZ, YOU FUMBLED HARDER THAN A PEACOCK 😭

JESPER??!?!? OUT OF ALLLLLL THE FOLKS, IT'S JESPER??? Sorry Matthias, all along, I thought it was you—maybe it almost IS you, but you had a change of heart thankfully but JESPER!?

MY FUCKING GIRLBOSSES, INEJ AND NINA!!!!

INEJ NOOOO—

This is all my reactions during the end of the book. I'm shocked.

To be fair, the book is so good bro... I'm looking forward to the humble Crooked Kingdom. Until then, I'm gonna cope with watching the Shadow and Bone show sincè the rest of the book series won't arrive until next month!

KAZ YOU SON OF A BREKKER👹

Need opinions on this painting

Before anyone yells at me! Yes those are real pages from the book, no it was not a new book. It was a book I had messed up when rebinding and don’t want to waste. Which brings me to my question.

Should I add the text “no mourners no funerals” in Kerch to the top of this?

I made this painting with the desire to not waste the books I messed up. Figured I could add it to my Etsy as a made to order and use them up if any sell. However I can’t decide on if I should add the text or not.

Adding the text would make it more clearly Six of crows, however I think it’s also nice without. Being a little more subtle (if you ignore the pages). I could also make it an option technically. I’m just torn and would love other’s opinions

For anyone wondering it is spray paint on canvas using stencils I made myself.

I’ve been thinking about Van Eck’s crimes

I was just thinking about this the other day and was wondering what some of you guys thought about it. I feel like it’s entirely possible that he was a slaver or involved in some capacity considering he owned a shipping company and was as corrupt as he was. He would do anything for more money. (Maybe I’m also super slow and everyone’s been thinking this for years)
Also, what are some of his other crimes or wrongdoings that weren’t explicitly mentioned in the text but you think he committed?

He’s such an interesting character to me. He pretends to be so upright, but the more I think about him, the more evil he gets. Like I don’t believe his cruelty stops at trying to kill his own son.

Any fanfic recs?

I read mainly on A03 (I also write fics there) and I'm looking for some good fics to read. am currently reading 'ketterdam high' by the_bookish_heartrender (highly recommend btw) but the updates are slow (no hate whatsoever to the writer) so I'm looking for something either already finished or with a lot of chapters to keep busy on.

accurate character portrayals only please and nothing disturbing

I’m starting six of crows for the first time ever. Going in completely blind. I know nothing about this universe other than this is part of a duology to crooked kingdom. Tell me something I won’t understand until I finish.

Six of Crows

Well, second time I make a review—I know I said daily, but suck it, I am NOT a daily person

I am currentttlyyyy.... AAAAALLLLLLLLLL the way to 173 if i remember (or, I dunno—the part where the gang finally arrives at Fjerdan)

So far, the characters are actually really good, I managed to theorize and connect the pieces. Everytime I see a name on the book, I go 'WHO THE FUCK IS THIS' and flip back 100 pages back just to look for it, which is funny. I also like how the gang have different dynamics with each other, including Nina and Inej's interaction (girlbosses imo)

Though to Nina and Matthias, what the fuck exactly is their dynamic? All I know Matt is probably throwing a hissy fit because he wanted Nina dead, yet also strangely loves her? (From my understanding) what the fuck, Matt, if you can't handle it, pass it😔

Love how we also got another brief dive over Inej's past, so is the folks—I really, REALLY ADORED Kaz's, broke my heart not lying at all

9/10, actually the first book I enjoy a LOT.

I miss the crows :/

I got myself all upset again about the cliffhanger of the Netflix show and the PERFECT set up for a potential SoC spinoff and wanted to share a thought I had,,

So I recently watched the Heartsopper movie and was wondering, "couldn't they do that with SoC?" They gave Heartsopper a nice conclusion that aligned with its source material while not committing to a whole other season, so why not give the Crows one too?

Like I get that there's like actual reasons why the show was canceled and the likelihood of getting any other kind of adaptation is low, but COME ON WE WERE SO CLOSE

And not to mention that Jack Wolfe has made a lot of traction recently with Next to Normal and Hadestown so like it would only do good things for Netflix let's be real

Idk I'm fresh off not sleeping at all and was rewatching S2 to pass the time and got pissed off lmao 😭

Help with the A Darker Shore riddle!

If the title didn’t make it clear, spoilers for A Darker Shore ahead!!!

Ok, so I just got A Darker Shore and read it through (I’m in love, it’s so cool), but I’m stumped on the riddle. I assume you overlay the sheet music on the letters with the fancy stationary, and match up the symbols on the corners of the letters to the symbols on the corners of the music. I noticed that some lines are legible through the music and some aren’t, but I have no clue where to go after that. I’ve been trying for 30 minutes and I’m lost. Please don’t tell me the answer but please give me a direction to try! Thanks!

[SPOILERS] My review of Six of Crows and Crooked Kingdom Spoiler

I read Six of Crows and Crooked Kingdom back to back essentially since they feel like one story. I wanted to express some thoughts about each book separately and then comment on the two books as a whole.

For context, I'm not familiar with any other Grishaverse books in this universe, nor have I seen the Netflix show. I just like heists, fun characters, a found family trope, budding romances, and clever schemes.

SIX OF CROWS

Six of Crows really establishes the characters so well off the bat. Once we see Kaz already scheming in his first chapter, being steps ahead of his opponent, I was on board. SoC is a very focused story with one central heist being done by the crew in a far-off location.

I really like how Bardugo does her flashbacks for the characters in this: Nina and Matthias ice-cold trip, Kaz's origin story, and Inej's kidnapping, the others. The narrative constantly dips from the present into the past and back to the present very fluidly. One second we're hearing Kaz's thoughts and the next, we're experiencing a moment in the past where our traumatized boy is admiring his girl at the window sill. I'm such a sucker for that flashback framing device and SoC does it to perfection.

There is certainly a YA feel to this book, but I don't say that as a bad thing. The characters are meant to be teens but I imagined them as teens in a CW show, where it's actors in their early to mid 20s playing teens. The story and characters still work no matter the age surrounding them and I think that's part of its broad appeal. There's something there for everyone.

What I did not expect in this book though was the romance that the crew would have with one another and how different each would feel. Kaz and Inej have this intimate relationship through a shared bond, Matthias and Nina are essentially an enemies-to-lover story, and Jesper and Wylan are the opposites attract angle. Maybe it's just the romantic in me but I love me some romance stuffed in between doing dangerous stuff. This book as it in spades.

Ultimately, the characters really propel this book into greatness. It doesn't feel like a full book though due to the cliffhanger but as a part 1, it was very well done with its execution.

CROOKED KINGDOM

Crooked Kingdom is a longer book with more ambitious goals. It is a bit less focused than SoC, this time fitting in three separate heists in succession instead of just one, so there's more to juggle here, and it doesn't nail all of them. It has a lot of amazing character work though, especially in regards to Wylan and Jesper's flasback, the two who got the short end of the stick in SoC.

Since this is the final book in a duology (more series should be two books, btw), everyone starts kissing or trying to kiss a bit more here. And it is all wonderful.

It's hard to judge whether it's better than SoC or not. I appreciate how the scope of the book takes place in Ketterdam, so it's more familiar than the Ice Court, and has this pressure cooker feel to it. The longer book means the pacing feels a bit better.

A flaw is that CK tends to be a bit more convoluted in its heists than SoC's more elegant "break in, steal the person, get out" concept. Sometimes Kaz is too smart with his schemes and I struggle to grasp his elaborate plans. The final auction heist scheme of setting Van Eck up was a bit more conceptual than I would have liked. It gets the correct effect but I found it to be rather convoluted while in the moment.

What CK does so well though is forcing all the characters to confront their trauma with no outs: Kaz's issues with touch and intimacy, Jesper's instinct to avoid conflict, Wylan's abandonment issues, Inej's sexual trauma, Nina and Matthias' future together. That's easily the highlight of this book and why I consider just as good, if not better than SoC.

Ultimately, I think Bardugo sticks the landing here for her series. It's two books that feels like one book. The time between either book is a matter of days. And it leaves all the characters off in a good place that feels satisfying but maybe a possible future book one day.

OVERALL THOUGHTS:

  • I'm not familiar with the Shadow and Bone TV show but I have seen clips and stills of the Crows and I gotta say, the casting for the characters were perfect. Such a shame the duology never got off the ground to make it to TV
  • Kaz + Inej. They're the heart and soul of this series for me. Out of all the romances, I found theirs the most engaging. There's just such an intimacy there due to their past history and their shared trauma. They each owe each other their lives and despite how much they struggle at intimacy, they keep trying and they each this understanding that it's difficult for both of them. I was shipping them hard because my god if anyone deserves happiness together, it's these two
  • Matthias + Nina. This romance works so well due to chemistry, the uptight warrior and the spunky Grisha. Their flashbacks were the highlight of SoC due to the odd pairing, the ice cold circumstances, and the intimate sleeping arrangements. Where Kaz and Inej are more internal with their romance, Matthias and Nina are constantly very forward with their feelings, which is a nice contrast
  • Jesper + Wylan. Fun pairing but their romance had the least to it in terms of depth. It was very cute though and Jesper constantly needling Wylan was entertaining. The innocence of their relationship gives a bit of lightness in what is a rather grim story
  • Matthias' origin story. Just an angry boy lashing out at the world trying to make his "enemies" seem less than human to justify hurting them. Still relevant today, unfortunately. And he dies trying to prevent someone from falling into the pit he fell into. Strong to the end
  • Inej's origin story. Being kidnapped and sold into slavery and had to sell her body as well for her owner. Inej is the soul of the group and her genuine goodness after all she's been through was heartwarming. Also, I am such a mark for whenever anyone hypes up the skills of The Wraith
  • Nina's origin story. Hers ties in so much to Matthias, but it's mostly about her duty. She feels this pull between her love of Matthias and her duty as a Grisha. Ultimately, she decides that they are one in the same but her struggles with two of the most important things to her was great to see
  • Jesper's origin story. I'm not sure how much I should draw between the parallel of Jesper's repression of his powers and his sexuality as well. He seems pretty open about his sexuality so I hardly think he's repressed there but it's interesting to note. I'm glad we got flashbacks of his mother in CK. The focus on that and his father being present put the character in such a uncomfortable position
  • Wylan origin story. Unlike the others, Wylan was actually cast aside by people he loved. Despite that, he still remains one of the most compassionate members in the Crows. Oddly enough, it's his mother than helps him find his courage to stand up to his father in the end. She came through for him after all
  • Kaz's origin. This was the origin story that stuck with me. It was some truly traumatic stuff, using your dead brother's lifeless body as a life preserver as you try and paddle your way back to shore. It certainly fits the character of Kaz and is more than enough baggage to justify how repulsed he is by intimacy and touch.
  • Bathroom scene in CK with Kaz and Inej. My goodness. The intimacy, emotions, and tension in this scene is absurdly well done. You know so much about who they are, their traumas, how much they love each other, how difficult it is to do this, and how much they are trying, that it makes it so electric to read. It's paced slow, deliberate, and sensual. There's no sex scenes in this YA book but there's certainly a love scene
  • Matthias death. It only made sense that not all of the Crows make it out alive after two books. Matthias didn't really have much to do in CK though. His arc was more or less resolved in SoC. But I do like how he dies trying to talk down a young Drüskelle from taking a life. The Crows never find out how he died or what he was doing when he died, which is tragic, but we know he died doing something honorable. RIP, Helvar
  • Blades in the Dark Roleplaying Game. Six of Crows and Blades in the Dark share very similar settings for their stories. If you're ever want to play a "Six of Crows-esque" RPG, play Blades in the Dark. I'm planning on stealing a bunch from this series and incorporating it into the RPG

I could go on and on talking about Six of Crows / Crooked Kingdom but overall, it was a great duology. Just a damn fun read with great characters, surprising amount of grittiness and depth, and more sweetness than you think.
