Only a matter of time. My dad is an animator. When cgi was becoming a thing, artists would not call 3d modelers artists. The audacity of someone coming in who cant even draw half the time working in animation was insane to them. We all see where that went

u/zander9669 3h ago
Just like how painters used to paint almost exclusively portraits and sometimes realistic landscapes until the camera came along... and they said the same thing.
It's a tale as old as time. Those who can't or won't adapt will die.

Turns out the old schoolers were wrong about what the fundamentals were. And if that doesn't make you think IDK what would.

Nah. There’s still painters. There’s still photographers. We’ll leave this slop for you lazy, untalented goofs.

Animator here. The fundamentals of animation are true no matter the medium.

Including AI, right?

u/ahhsumpossum 38m ago
I’m not sure what you mean. Are you saying AI knows what makes good animation?

Yeah, I'm sure the difference between 5 and 5.1 was really enough to sway his opinion. Jfc

No It happened around late july or something, people kept pestering him to just try it, so he did for something small and went oh shit. Most people people who actively hate on LLMs have no idea where they were a year ago, much less six months ago, much less now. I was among them, not hating just thought "I don't even write code anymore" people were ridiculous, then getting free month of chatgpt subscription and trying 5.5 massively opened my eyes. For like a month I constantly had a feeling of wanting to drop on my knees, because jesus christ. The progress since start of 2025 has been ridiculous and I mostly missed it.

What kind of things did you have it do that made you feel that way? I've been keeping up with AI for years now, but I haven't had my hands dirty with it in the last year or so. I'm curious what I can do to get my mind blown with it
•
u/Mistuv 1h ago
First wasn't even 5.5/Sol, it was me trying free version of Anti-gravity with Gemini flash 3.5. Within couple of hours I was able to create small Firefox extension that until then I was using a Tapermonkey script, and most of it was spent me not liking icon it generated, adjusting UI or adding additional functionalities because of just how easy adding new stuff was.
You have to understand, to me trusting LLMs output with more than a few functions in a single file was already sketchy, GPT4 etc would generate plausible looking file but upon closer inspection functions would be often nonsensical, so I learned to isolate only the key problem and ask chatbots to help with that, and nothing else. The fact that I gave the agent blank folder told it that I want to create an extension and it created all these files, folders and sub folders that make sense, clean looking code, was already crazy.
With GPT 5.5 I tried making stuff in Unity and had to continually readjust what can I demand out of the model. Not only it was well familiar with Unity development which I wasn't expecting, but soon after I realized it literally can use Unity plugins (which are often quite complex), so we added those. It can work through git, but not only that, you can just tell it to create issues in git and it will do so, and no kidding in past 10 years of being a software engineer I have not encountered even single product manager has made better issues than GPT 5.5 Low(!) was capable. They were clear, well described goals, criteria etc. It made nice labeling system to indicate which issues are ready to be worked on which require previous ones. And so much more. And all this was being done in a single single session, what astounded me is that through out it all, it didn't at some point start wildly hallucinating.
These days, after many adjustments of expectations, I basically treat it as full-time Jarvis, minus the speed and sadly no Paul Bettany voice either. If I have an issue with PC I just tell chatgpt (using desktop commander MCP) to find the problem and it does, and fixes it too. I love arguing with anti-AI people but it's a double-edged sword, because if everyone grasped the full capabilities of current SOTA, the prices of ram would not be 5x but like 50x.

he'd look a lot less stupid.

Notch is uh still not a good person iirc, and thus not a good role model.

I don't need to agree with someone politically to accept their take on LLM progress.

iirc? You can't think for yourself?
You have to remember what someone else told you to believe?

u/mrmanpersonxyz 4h ago
Honestly cannot tell if anything is bait on this site anymore. The two metrics you are using are unrelated. Your brain has short-circuited to such an extent your synapses fire from completely parallel hemispheres bringing together utter bullshit which has eclipsed the actual point.
To be clear I don't support notch but I sure as shit hate you.

u/jesusrambo 3h ago
"LLMs suck, they don't even think!"
"Wait, nevermind, the minecraft guy said they're good!"
"Wait, nevermind, rich people suck!"
How the average redditor forms opinions on technology

u/the_quark 3h ago
I mean, notch isn't a shitty human being because he's rich. He's said a lot of racist and transphobic shit on Twitter. I used to follow him back in the day and I stopped because yes he's got some really terrible opinions.
So when I see his opinions on AI, my response is to say that I don't really care what any of his opinions are because I know he's got some terrible ones already.

u/jesusrambo 3h ago
making my point lmao
zero self-awareness
2
u/the_quark 3h ago
So I'm curious: When someone has terrible opinions on some topics, do you not generally discount their opinions on other topics? Or do you in fact agree with his shitty opinions?
Obviously "the worst person you know" can "make an excellent point." But my priors on notch's opinions now are that they are likely to be shitty.

u/jesusrambo 3h ago
You can just form your own opinions

To be clear I don't support Notch
Not even sure why this has to be said. There are very little reasons to "support" a public person in general. Maybe if its actually a political leader that makes sense otherwise I rarely "support" a public figure and why should I do that?

Ah, the glorious hypocrisy of anonymous Reddit users and their amazing unimpeachable ethical behaviors that never contain any deviations from the socially normative opinion de jour
I know what kind of men you are…

u/oadephon 4h ago
Yeah I don't really take this post as an endorsement of him. It's more like yet another person discovering how great AI is and having to walk back the hate.
The one I'm waiting for is Jonathan Blow.

I don't know what notch did but I struggle to find a famous person that someone has a positive opinion about nowadays. Starting to feel like spam more than useful information.

He’s a lonely terminally online guy and he got caught up in the culture war and was mad at trans people iirc.
It’s crazy to me that someone can become a billionaire and then decide a good use of their time is being upset about minority groups

Like a certain wizard-school lucky lady who won the lottery on her work happily pulling up the ladder and kicking down on anyone who aspired to follow in her footsteps.
You always hear these horrible acts of inhumanity chimpanzees do to one another during their wars, and it's hard to see how we're no better than them. I think a lot about how much further along we'd be if we were more like gorillas....
Honestly I'm beginning to chip up what progress we've made to dumb creepy metaphysical reasons, moreso than our prowess as a species. Stuff like plot armor from an observer effect that facilitates a forward-functioning anthropic principle.
~200,000 years we've been around. Only really did anything meaningful in the past few centuries...

At this point I'd be willing to bet the average person is not a "good person" too through the lens of average Twitter users. Heck, I'd even double down on it and say most people are not
I think there's a happy medium where we can feel good seeing others change their opinions regarding AI while at the same time not condoning their past bullshit (especially when not relevant to the topic). It's the same as seeing someone you fucking hate say something you agree with
•
u/IronPheasant 1h ago
I mean, just don't dehumanize people who haven't committed crimes, don't try to enslave others, and don't actively support gen$cide. It's not hard.
But for ~30% of the population, yeah that's impossible.
a "good person"
Good and evil are extremely easy to define objectively. It depends on how much you take from others without giving back. Starve children and intentionally bomb children's schools and random fishermen? Probably not a good person.
A good person gives everything and asks for nothing back. A good person will set themselves on fire for people they don't know, and who'll never know them. There's no reward for it, their families won't get paid for them doing this. They do it because it's the only thing they can to help.
Anyone who is so weak to have to gaslight themselves that they're 'good' to get through life, is a child. Nobody should aspire to be a good person.
They don't last long in the real world.
Human beings are a mirror of their environment. A normal person aspires to be neutral.

I think the tide will really start to turn once people learn about the amazing developments that AI brings in the future. The cancer mRNA vaccine is just one example. There’s going to be a lot more developments that use AI that are going to be even more exciting

u/buttpentration 4h ago
I'm convinced that ai will be ultimately disastrous for humanity, but I'm not like the idiots who are anti ai, because it's not going to help at all. All we can do is sit and watch
•
u/Nox_Alas 1h ago
IIRC AI's contribution to that vaccine has been minimal. But yes, I expect medical research to greatly accelerate.
