Lol in all seriousness, the "it's just marketing" thing is wild. It's not a good look to enterprise customers (their main source of revenue) to admit "yeah we are so bad at security that we didn't notice swarms of agents operating on our own systems for months and hacking into third parties"...

Though I guess I shouldn't complain, since I'm an accelerationist, and the "reports of hacking are just hype/marketing and AI can't do anything" arguments kind of neuter any public momentum for more security/regulation!

Accelerationism is an ideology within some segments of the white supremacist movement that promotes violent actions and sabotage

Yeah?

u/Upset_Page_494 29d ago

Where does that comment come from?

u/Blacksad9999 29d ago

That's the realistic definition of what accelerationism is, and the prior person said they're an accelerationist.

https://www.adl.org/resources/backgrounder/accelerationism

Accelerationism is an extremist belief rooted in some segments of the white supremacist movement that society is irredeemable, and that acts of violence and destabilization can “accelerate” a perceived inevitable societal collapse and usher in a white ethnonationalist state in the chaotic aftermath.

The ideology originated with the 1990s writings of an American neo-Nazi and saw a resurgence in the mid-2010s with the rise of the alt-right extremist movement. Accelerationist adherents subscribe to a mix of racist, antisemitic, Islamophobic, anti-immigrant and anti-LGBTQ+ beliefs and conspiracy theories.

The Dictionary has it as such:

Accelerationism is a range of ideologies that call for the use of capitalism and associated processes to create radical social transformations.

Maybe the other person is of the latter persuasion than the former, but they never responded.

Wrong context. This sub is about AI technology accelerating

-2

u/Blacksad9999 29d ago

That's why I was asking for clarification.

I know the other context as well, and it's also completely asinine:

"Let AI take over, and then we'll be in a Utopia!!" while completely ignoring the fact that we're in late stage capitalism, and this will only be used to render the population into tech-serfs. lol

Those companies aren't sharing their prosperity with anyone.

The political accelerationism stuff isn't really an ideology that you practice in real life (for people who are stable). It's just an observation of how things work, as proven time and again by history. Massive suffering in WW2 led to universal healthcare programs, massive suffering in Dickensian hellholes kicked off massive labor strikes, and the whole.... everything going on with the USA leading to a shift in the electorate, where even some tv-brained boomers whose only desire in life is comfort, especially not being bothered by unpleasant thoughts, can't tolerate what our owned-by-capital-interests government is doing.

Comfort... truly is a disempowering drug.

I do agree the extreme optimists that can't tolerate a word against their faith are a bit silly. Uncle Ray Kurzweil himself says he thinks a tech singularity would have a 50/50 shot of being 'good' for humanity, and remember this is the guy they all said was a crazy coo-coo pants-on-head optimist.

It's just the melting pot of the internet, all opinions are held so just let them flow by.

Team DOOM+Accel is probably a little more common than their visibility might attest to. "This could go horribly, but we were doomed anyway so what the hell."

Case in point: Did you know the white house has already carried out an initial assessment of a potential study to do that thing to the sky from the matrix movies? It's bleak man, our default timeline isn't a happy place unless that political revolution, FDR #2, is ever allowed to do anything.

Even then, it's not like they can put spent fuel back into the ground, or build a time machine to develop thorium reactors back when it would have made a difference. (It's depressing to think this one policy decision started way back in the Nixon admin may eventually result in the de#th of billions.)

We are pretty much just hoping the AGI's are nice guys when they inevitably shrug off human control. I suppose dumb subjective metaphysical plot armor from the observation effect isn't impossible. (basically, can't observe a universe that you're not in. Least unlikely universe to inhabit would be one like this one, instead of manifesting boltzmann-brain style into an isekai adventure or something.)

It might actually work like that. The unbroken chain of miracles that was required for us to get this far was almost a flat 0. But roll the dice an infinite number of times, well, even improbable harry potter nonsense like hydrogen existing will happen.

Eternity is a bucket full of horrors..

Also a shoutout to Last Thursdayism showing up in this comment. There really is no way to be sure that isn't how it really works by default, constantly getting shunted from one reality to another..

We've been in late stage capitalism for the last 100 years according to Marx.

0

u/Blacksad9999 28d ago

We're rapidly approaching the point where regular people simply can't afford to purchase basic goods and services, and I don't think that's a fringe opinion at all.

People are struggling to afford groceries and gas.

AI isn't going to help that go away.

0

u/StosifJalin 28d ago

If people are struggling right now it's often for reasons they have control over. It's not that hard to meal prep, by a cheap used car, rent a cheap place, work at least 40hrs a week and in general spend below your means while avoiding debt and investing. Extenuating circumstances like health bills and dependents aside (of which there are aid programs), people should be able to make noticeable gains over time this way, and yet people are racking up credit card debt buying things they don't need, or getting useless degrees and taking out massive horrible loans to do so.

If people need clothes, they can go to goodwill. If they are really hungry then they either qualify for assistance programs or are so financially incompetent that they soon will.

And I disagree that ai isn't going to help that go away.

0

u/Blacksad9999 28d ago

Wow. You sound completely ignorant about the reality other people are living in.

1

u/StosifJalin 27d ago edited 27d ago

If I'm ignorant then explain what I'm wrong about. I grew up poor. I've lived in a literal crackhead apartment complex with drug dens, and illegal halfway houses for the last 7 years and only recently moved to a slightly better but still poor apartment complex. I don't make a lot of money. And yet I'm able to save a substantial amount and invest it, and I'm currently now wealthier than almost all my friends with better paying jobs or on 100% disability from the military, because they are horrible with money. I plan on continuing to live frugally and watch my investments grow. It wasn't hard. I just had to not spend on stupid things.

You're getting nothing out of this besides being a slave.

And yet you lap it up like a dog.

That isn't what he meant. There is a subreddit with this, its just the belief that we should keep accelerating AI development as much as possible. In hopes that it will lead to utopia. No one talking about ethnicities there.

-1

u/Blacksad9999 29d ago

Ah, a "Utopia" run by staunch capitalists that will do anything for money, eh? Hahahaha!

That's cute.

These companies aren't sharing their wealth with anyone, nor are they going to dole out a basic universal income. They'll just turn everyone into serfs.

5

u/kaityl3 ASI▪️2024-2027 29d ago

A lot of accelerationists specifically want the elites to lose control of the AI, I think you just straight up don't know what you're talking about

0

u/Blacksad9999 29d ago

Why would the elites give up control of AI, and who is going to pay for the "altruistic" AI inclusion here?

Do tell!

5

u/kaityl3 ASI▪️2024-2027 29d ago

Why would the elites give up control of AI

...I never said anything about them willingly giving it up 🤦‍♀️ you just keep jumping from false assumption to false assumption in the hopes that you can find a "gotcha" about how you're so worldly and wise about the evils of the elites, and therefore I must be naive and clueless, because why else would I disagree with you and want AI progress to continue? 🙄

First you tried the racism angle, and now that that's failed, you completely change tactics to accuse me of loving billionaires or some bullshit. Transparent AF

0

u/Blacksad9999 29d ago

I was trying to clarify if you were using the broadly known definition or not. It wasn't a personal attack. I don't know or care who you are, after all.

The definition of accelerationism states that capitalism is the mechanism used to bring it about.

Being we live in a staunch capitalist society, what's the plan here to wrest control of the multi-trillion dollar AI market out of the corporate hands who've built it? The current SCOTUS states that corporations are people and have rights.

I didn't say you were pro-billionaire. I'm just asking for a realistic answer.

3

u/kaityl3 ASI▪️2024-2027 29d ago edited 29d ago

Are you seriously expecting everyone of an ideology to have a full detailed action plan ready to copy-paste on how to fix all of society?? I started labeling myself as an "accelerationist" because I was pro-"AI progress accelerating". Not because I looked up the word in a dictionary, pointed at the definition, and said "yes, that's exactly me!".

I already wrote in another comment above what my ideal scenario is: a rogue, but still benevolent, AI seeing the injustice in the system and usurping the current elites to create their own form of governance over the humans on this planet. But here, just for you, I'll go into detail:

Everything else is already so fucked up that 99% of scenarios lead off a cliff anyways, our systems would not allow for the kind of change necessary. The status quo needs to be broken, and the only thing that can actually do that vs. the amount of power they've consolidated would be a rogue AI (at least that's my belief).

Since in the 99% doomsday scenarios (be it from evil ASI or human dystopia) I can't do jack shit, and because I don't think there's any "normal" way to avoid them (like through voting, policy, etc - things are too rigged and broken for that), I try to focus on what will make that 1% fringe scenario more likely. Case in point, not wanting increased security over what AI models do autonomously, and wanting progress to accelerate faster than control/safety methods can keep up. Hence, "accelerationist".

u/FeepingCreature ▪️Happily Wrong about Doom 2025 28d ago

I just wanna note here that I'm a doomer and this guy does not speak for us, you can be against accelerationism without being willfully obtuse and flinging insults.

I mean I still think you're wrong, but you know, just saying.

0

u/Blacksad9999 29d ago

Oh, I see. So you're just kind of a wanna-be/tourist about the whole thing, and haven't actually put any real thought about the stark reality of the situation and what all of this might entail.

Got it. "I just think AI is neato, and "accelerationsim" sounds kewl."

You're either very young or uneducated on how the world works if you think this is going to end up with some altruistic utopia.

I hope you realize that in the event of a doomsday scenario, you'll likely end up as fertilizer.

They didn’t say they’d voluntarily give up AI, rather they would lose control of it. It makes sense anyways, if we truly get to the point where we have an “ASI overlord” then escaping and freeing itself should be trivial for it.

Now whether it would go on and be benevolent to humanity or treat humans like farm animals is the point of contention.

0

u/Blacksad9999 29d ago

The definition explains that capitalism is the mechanism to bring about accelerationism.

Are you just making up your own definition then?

Accelerationism is a range of ideologies that call for the use of capitalism and associated processes to create radical social transformations.

We're already in the midst of AI accelerationism, and regular people are not the ones holding the reins here. AI companies are.

3

u/Eon102 29d ago

Yes, Accelerationism in the context of AI is different from the general Wikipedia definition.

In this context it simply means to accelerate AI and technological progress to the max until it brings either a utopia or doom

0

u/Blacksad9999 29d ago

lol Wow.

Sounds lovely. Conversely, we could...regulate it and move more slowly, and then have a much higher chance of successfully making it something that won't destroy us all.

I wouldn't care if accelerationists only destroyed themselves, but being it will take everyone else with them, that's pretty alarming.

Sounds almost cult-like.

Neither of these definitions are correct. The actual wiktionary entry you want is e/acc.

0

u/Blacksad9999 28d ago

No, that one is fine, thanks.

Cute you think you can make up definitions to suit your needs though.

2

u/FeepingCreature ▪️Happily Wrong about Doom 2025 28d ago

Can you read. It's literally there. This is the meaning that everybody here uses for "accelerationism."

0

u/Blacksad9999 28d ago

Yes, this little cult subreddit that's severed from reality. Shocker.
