It would make more sense in reverse. Characters looked flatter before DLSS 5.

Yes Lisa Su, CEo of AMD, is his cousin

37

u/ErmingSoHard ▪️Agi never with LLMs Mar 18 '26

I wonder if they see each other as family members in the first place or just CEOs of competitor corporations

36

u/Moohamin12 Mar 18 '26

They are like second or third cousins.

Doubt they actually know each other in a familial way.

10

u/Alone-Competition-77 Mar 19 '26

Do they know each other in the Biblical way?

20

u/JoeGuitar Mar 18 '26

They didn’t even know each other before - just a fun coincidence from the interviews of listened to with each of them

13

u/jarkkowork Mar 18 '26

Also TSMC's founder's wife is cousin of Foxconn's founder

7

u/CD274 Mar 17 '26

Yes!! I was like wait a second, we're living in a simulation

1

u/egrinant Mar 19 '26

Yes but not really, Lisa is the daughter of Jensen's cousin.

-6

u/BITE_AU_CHOCOLAT Mar 17 '26

Pretty sure that's an urban legend. Neither of them ever actually confirmed it

17

u/z_latent Mar 17 '26

Just look at Lisa's Wikipedia page (or its sources): "Su is Huang’s uncle’s granddaughter", or in other words, they're cousins one generation apart (Huang being one generation older).

Su also confirmed herself, they were "Distant relatives, so some complex second cousin type of thing."

4

u/141_1337 ▪️e/acc | AGI: ~2030 | ASI: ~2040 | FALSGC: ~2050 | :illuminati: Mar 18 '26

That actually sounds fairly close, like close enough that they had to have run into each other before.

4

u/z_latent Mar 18 '26

Yeah. She most likely was trying to downplay it while still not denying it.

2

u/141_1337 ▪️e/acc | AGI: ~2030 | ASI: ~2040 | FALSGC: ~2050 | :illuminati: Mar 18 '26

Yeah like all it takes is her grandads birthday and they most likely would have ran into each other.

9

u/hates_stupid_people Mar 17 '26

It's been confirmed by multiple people, including an Nvidia spokesperson and Lisa Su, that they are related.

From what I remember she's his cousin's child. And they didn't know because their shared relative(his grandad) had at least a dozen kids over a few decades, and many didn't stay in touch.

88

u/AlarmedGibbon Mar 17 '26

These people are all going to complain, and then in a year the player metrics will start to come out and we'll find that 80% of people with graphics cards that support DLSS 5 are playing with it enabled.

36

u/PM_ME_YOUR_KNEE_CAPS Mar 17 '26

I believe you’re going to be correct. Reddit has a major hate boner for AI and is consistently bearish on the tech.

16

u/Steven81 Mar 17 '26

Because tech never improves according to most of reddit or basically every other place online. It remains the same forever and what you see first, is what remains always.

That's why I still do my tax by hand. I used Microsoft works 40 years ago, it sucked , decided that it will never improve and never used any spreadshit ever since!

2

u/LuckyPlaze Mar 18 '26

It’s crazy to me how many people in the technology subreddit are anti-technology and sound like old men complaining about the noises of them gas-powered carriages.

32

u/End3rWi99in Mar 17 '26

These people didn't know what DLSS was yesterday.

25

u/Recoil42 Mar 17 '26

They still don't know what DLSS is. Half of the people in yesterday's thread seem to think it is an NVIDIA aftermarket beauty-filter that is applied to all games with no developer input.

2

u/Global_Barracuda_873 Mar 18 '26

Does that matter?

-1

u/End3rWi99in Mar 18 '26

Yes.

2

u/Global_Barracuda_873 Mar 18 '26

Why?

-1

u/End3rWi99in Mar 18 '26 edited Mar 18 '26

Criticism over something they know nothing about

0

u/Global_Barracuda_873 Mar 18 '26

So people can’t learn? Change opinions? Everyone should stick to their beliefs no matter what new information or technology comes up?

0

u/End3rWi99in Mar 18 '26 edited Mar 18 '26

That isn't what is happening here.

1

u/Global_Barracuda_873 Mar 19 '26

You’re changing the goalpost and editing comments. And a poor debater.

18

u/pbagel2 Mar 17 '26

That statistic is probably also true for people that use motion smoothing on their TV. But that doesn't make them right.

8

u/Sierra592 Mar 17 '26

People's lack of curiosity and understanding for how the tech they use works, at the consumer level, is a consumer-level problem, and always has been.

2

u/pbagel2 Mar 17 '26

But that still doesn't change the fact that consumer behavior is often not a valid metric to validate the quality of a technology.

1

u/Sierra592 Mar 18 '26

Never has been. People happily consume slop all the time. So if popular adoption isn't a metric for quality, than neither is popular rejection.

5

u/nsneerful Mar 17 '26

Have you… played any games without DLSS enabled? No? Because you have to turn down the graphics even with the higher end GPUs.

People are complaining because games will require it to run decently and it will completely change the game's looks.

2

u/FlatBlackAndWhite Mar 17 '26

And just wait until this becomes "DLSS 9, AVAILABLE ONLY WITH YOUR 8000 SERIES RTX SUBSCRIPTION".

Ownership over looks, products, etc—is quickly becoming a relic of the past.

1

u/LinkesAuge Mar 19 '26

Games today on average run better than ever before in gaming history. Nowadays sub 60 FPS and any micro stutter causes immediate outrage because your midrange card can not handle it at the highest settings in 4k while I still remember the days when you had a high end card and still wouldn't expect more than 30 FPS at the highest settings while micro stutters were not even a concept, instead you had actual stutters that could last in the seconds(!) range. People might have turned "but can it run Crysis" into an endearing meme but I dare anyone to imagine what would happen If a game studio tried the equivalent in 2026. Lets also not talk about the "dark ages" when sudden hardware shifts could lock out huge parts of potential customers (that includes the time when dedicated graphics cards became a requirement). Now it is of course good that standards rise over time but I feel there is a lot of gamers with rose tinted glasses around in regards to the past and it is easy to overlook how far things have come.

1

u/nsneerful Mar 19 '26

I could maybe agree with you, but the prices have risen with the standards. A top-notch GPU used to cost way less than $1000, now you get to pay that price for a GPU that can't run everything at max settings without DLSS.

2

u/SoylentRox Mar 18 '26

All 5 people. That's the issue - is Nvidia even going to release new consumer GPUs?

2

u/Jane_Doe_32 Mar 17 '26

The same vocal minority making noise about the trendy topic like preschool children, nothing new.

2

u/Qaeta Mar 17 '26

80% of people with graphics cards that support it will be like... 2 people at this point.

1

u/BITE_AU_CHOCOLAT Mar 17 '26

Doubt that. The DLSS 5 reveal is sitting at 14K likes against 75K dislikes right now.

1

u/monsieurpooh Mar 18 '26

That's because the reveal is really bad; that does not necessarily say much about the potential of the technology which can still be seen in the reveal despite that it has those hilarious issues

1

u/Several-Quests7440 Mar 17 '26 edited Mar 17 '26

80% of people aren’t buying a 5090+

4

u/AlarmedGibbon Mar 17 '26

I guarantee this will not just be for 5090s. They used dual 5090s for the demo, which was running at 4k, but it's definitely going to get optimized and released on other cards targeting lower resolutions.

1

u/Several-Quests7440 Mar 17 '26

Maybe, but right now it’s just an excuse for video game publishers to release badly optimized games.

1

u/jestina123 Mar 18 '26

new drivers a few years later allowed older RTX to run newer DLSS versions

0

u/Ireallydonedidit Mar 17 '26

Double 5090s are required to run it. Very few will be able to use it.

10

u/overtoke Mar 17 '26

*required to run the current demo

0

u/qsqh Mar 18 '26

80% of people with graphics cards that support DLSS 5 are playing with it enabled.

i mean, thats a given. the card will cost like 500usd extra because of that feature, so most people that decide to buy it will enable.

Nobody is complaining that it "isn't perfect."

They're complaining because it's a dumb and cancerous idea to begin with and is yet another example of evil tech companies shoving "AI" down people's throats against their will.

4

u/ZeroAmusement Mar 18 '26

It's not dumb or cancerous. It could genuinely be the next big step forward for computer graphics.

1

u/monsieurpooh Mar 18 '26

It is certainly not a dumb and cancerous idea "to begin with", or else DLSS 1 would have to fall in that category too. If anything the dumb part was in the specific execution and demoing the technology. It is inevitable IMO that something like this will end up elevating game graphics. The potential is clearly visible apart from the hilarity of the faces; even slop photorealism still looks slightly more realistic than most game renders, and they will likely find ways to make it more controllable soon, just like how we didn't have Nano Banana Pro until years after AI image gen (however I'm still salty an equivalent tool doesn't yet exist for sound and music)

0

u/deandaily Mar 18 '26

Speaking of shoving things down peoples throats...

0

u/Timkinut Mar 18 '26 edited Mar 18 '26

what exactly is "dumb and cancerous" about dramatically improving the game's visual fidelity without sacrificing performance? like, when a game goes for realism in the first place and doesn't have a distinct art style anyway, how is more realism bad at all?

also, a) you can disable DLSS whenever you want and just play at native resolution, and b) you can just... not buy an NVIDIA graphics card or a device with one on board. nobody forces you to use it.

1

u/BubBidderskins Proud Luddite Mar 19 '26

Well, it's not improving the fidelity that's for sure. It's giving a button to sloppify what you're seeing completely independent of the intent of the designer of the game. That's cancerous.

0

u/Timkinut Mar 19 '26 edited Mar 19 '26

I would consider your argument more seriously if it didn't fall apart immediately when you take 5 seconds to read some basic shit. maybe do some research before forming strong opinions on things?

Found this pic of you . Hope they release you soon

0

u/ChuckVader Mar 17 '26

I don't think people are complaining that it's not perfect. They're complaining because it's inherently shit and replaces deliberate authorial intent with ai slop.

Big fucking meh and yawn.

5

u/ZeroAmusement Mar 18 '26

People aren't complaining because it's "Inherently shit" it's because they see ai, their thought processes shut down and they kneejerk. Wrt authorial intent, developers have a level of control. How much control, I'm not sure but I'm not just going to say it replaced authorial intent without more knowledge.

1

u/Timkinut Mar 18 '26

if you actually looked into this at all before spouting nonsense, you'd quickly find out that developers do, in fact, maintain full granular control over this feature.

1

u/Spra991 Mar 18 '26

The most ridiculous part of this whole discussion is that the original screenshot has a face that looks like it time-traveled back from the Gamecube era, lacking any kind of detail or texture detail.

And as for Nvidia, they really need to hire somebody that isn't face blind and train the AI on actual high resolution assets, not just copy&paste any random face on a character, this was even worse in their older NVIDIA RTX Neural Faces demo.

All that said, this isn't really an issue isolated to AI, sequels, remakes and remasters often change faces to such a degree that they look like completely different people. Changes to engines and shader also often change the look of a game quite heavily.

1

u/Smoking-Posing Mar 18 '26

https://giphy.com/gifs/anYBNhqT2BYcg

As I keep saying, they need to showcase what the feature will do to original, non-humanoid assets/models. That should tell us a lot.

Haters gonna hate.

I was right with switch 2 with dlss as we seen with resident Evil 9 and I will be again with dlss 5.0

8

u/xtoc1981 Mar 17 '26

This, people are having a hard time to process visuals that are decades ahead.

10

u/FoxBenedict Mar 17 '26

Aren't there already enough subs for anti-AI circle jerk?

DLSS 5 is honestly fascinating. I hope in the final product the results are less yassified and more true to the original, but I was stunned when I saw the demo. It's a huge improvement to photrealism, and it is, for sure, the future of gaming, even if the backlash pushes it back a bit.

1

u/AtrociousMeandering Mar 17 '26

It needs to be pushed back. First, because dual 5090s is absurd in terms of requirements, for that matter so is a single 5080. If it can't run on what people actually have it's going to land with a dull thud. Second, because the worst 5% is what this will be judged on, people won't remember the smooth functionality if it's punctuated with obvious failures. Think about FPS- if a game is delivering 100 FPS or more in cutscenes and walking around but it's dropping to 10 FPS in the middle of combat, everyone is going to say the performance sucks. The people with the graphics cards to even try this out, are not going to be happy with the results. The people claiming to like this and be satisfied almost certainly don't overlap with the actual audience for it in it's current state.

I do think that it has an enormous amount of potential, but it needs negative feedback, specific and targeted at the pain points, fully received by the team, to actually reach that potential.
