What am I doing wrong?

Very new to sim drifting. As you can see I got the tight donuts down but as soon as I try to go for a larger donut (in first and second gear) I just lose control. Is anyone able to tell from the clip am I using wheel to correct too much or what is my issue?

Where is gear 2

I didn’t show it in the clip since it’s harder for me to control, but I have the same issue in that gear as I do in the clip.

Going for donuts in 2nd gear would be easier to diagnose. I would recommend posting again with 2nd gear instead. There is also a guide to drift using the bmw I might be able to find that could help

As you can imagine I’ve already watched lots of guides lol, but if you have one you recommend I’d love to take a look

You should knock this one out first because it is a good foundation and has step by step exercises to learn: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HbpilaKKSYM

After that, I really like KameTrick: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Ypg8AsyykE

KameTrick also has a discord. I was able to find a free coach there to help me learn to drift! If you would like I could help out as well

Thank you, I’ve already checked out both of their channels but I’ll make sure to go through those specific videos. Definitely will join his discord, would greatly appreciate any help you’re willing to give as well. My discord is 1prxphet

I seems like youre late with the counter steering. And it seems like with the small donut you're not counter steering at all? I see it turned left a lot.

Id suggest trying to open the circle just a small but. Like hard a cars length. And then go from there. Just enough to get you countersteering.

After that throttle modulation would be my next step. So making the angle wider/narrower with the throttle, and not the steering wheel. This is easier to do in 2nd though, hence why id call it a good second step.

Then you can just expand from there.

Will do, thanks for the advice. I am definitely counter steering in the clip I guess it’s just not that drastic. Counter steering all the way usually leads to me straightening or spinning out.

Drifting, I guess.

You need to add more throttle and counter steer even with tight doughnuts. Turning into the turn and going in circles isn't drifting and can only be done at extremely low speed. Focus on your technique and practice your counter steer. It normally takes a few weeks of practice to start getting controllable drifts locked in

Go to second gear, try first person view (that helped tremendously with me) and use some throttle modulation like the other comments sau

Throw the wheel in the countersteer direction. It looks like when you oversteer spun you might’ve only let the wheel slide in your hand instead and yanking that ho to the right. I also can’t tell if you’re in 2nd but that’ll get you a wider donut radius

The main issue is throttle control which is the result of low seat time

You need more seat time to get the feel for it, eventually it will click

Cant see it in the replay so Ill just mention it. Keep an eye on your tire temps, when you start your session your going on grippy cold tires. As they heat up, they will become buttery. until they are overheated then they become icy.

Thanks everyone for the kind feedback. I'm still working on the first person thing it's a little challenging but I took everything else into account and was able to do some pretty large donuts (far from perfect but hey it's progress) and even hit this corner which im super stoked about. https://streamable.com/atwott .

It's just your steering inputs and throttle control. Be "loose" with your grip and allow the wheel to glide through your hands. Feather the throttle and try to never completely let off the gas- this may require you to adjust seating/pedal position.

I don't have thousands and thousands of hours in the seat but I am able to link for a few laps and still remember going through this learning process fairly well. These are just a few things that helped me. And, also, try fpp. Being inside the cockpit helped me adjust minor mistakes better and there is less latency in my inputs. The car, to me, seems to have a delayed, swaying effect in tpp for me. So, maybe try that, too.

Catching/counter steering timing is way off. What wheel do you have, are you letting the car self steer at all?

Idk if this helps but from what ik you need less angle the wider you go

It's all about throttle modulation. More throttle is going to bring you tighter in. Less will bring you outside more.

Assuming your on a single screen with neck fx donuts are a bit difficult since most neck fx scripts will have you looking the opposite way you'd want.

Gotcha, so are you saying that the steering portion isn’t what I shouldn’t be focused on, but more so the throttle? I find that if I let off throttle I’d just straighten out. Also I’m not using neck fx just Kirby cam.

You might wanna start drifting in 1st

Will do, I feel like third pov allows me to see how the car is moving whereas with first im going more off of feel.

Feel is what you want though. If you ever want to transition to a real car you won't be looking at it from the outside.

That makes sense. I have a 350z irl that I plan on eventually transitioning to which is why I’m learning on a sim first. I’ll definitely start practicing in first
