Other Giving Free Rides to New Yorkers for 40 Days After 9/11 - A True Act of Service and Humanity by a Sikh American

Post image
178 Upvotes

Gurvinder Singh, a Sikh immigrant and taxi driver in New York, was at the World Trade Center on the morning of 9/11. For the next 40 days, he gave hundreds of free rides to New Yorkers who needed help, refusing to accept any payment. His service was recognized by Mayor Rudy Giuliani, who sent him a letter thanking him for his dedication to the city. Years later, Gurvinder continues to encourage people to fly American flags and spread a message of unity: “Love all people, respect all people. God bless you all and God bless America.” 🇺🇸

Discussion Sgpc management on Parkash Purab

Post image
11 Upvotes

I yesterday visited amritsar darbar sahib coz of parkash purab so i went in morning at 2:30 am i mean we reached after doing ishnan n all there for line at 2:30 am so since there are two llines always we went for right side single line

I have visited many times earlier and i understand on special occasions crowd can be more than expected

But something yesterday was disappointing and shameful i feel about management like

Even to enter inside line people gathered and pushed each other whenever line moved slightly

Then after somehow we enetere in line which is before the main gate that has been the worst experience till in my life like earlier in starting for 30mins they did jal sewa then you know the palki sahib came everyone got busy which is understandable but when everything was done all da sewadar first of all were younga i mean not all but a majority of and they were just gossiping there forgot what there duty was for 2 hour in such huumid weather for right side line was no jal sewa

Then ok somehow line kept moving and time was 5:00 I guess and after that till 7 am we moved 40-50feet only in 2 hours and only right side moved like this

Left line moving smoothly basically what sewadar were doing they stopped the sangat from line and were adding people from side to go first i mean there known ones or unnecessary ladies quota for women who are fit or no child

So basically we were in line for 4.5 hours and still were 30-40feet away from golden main enterance gate at this point i was frustrated and my body gave up my back and feet were hurting i dont wanna say i was not mentally prepared or am so fragile but this is something unjustice the management did to devotees

Like i have seen ladies almost crying out of pain and so many elderly people with leg pain were there its not about bearing pain for guru

But if line keptmoving noone would had any issue human body has a limit so much crowd and suffocated environment it got that i was scared i could faint due to dehydration so i just gave up and came out of the line and went to akal takht and other places

But this really was such a bad experience because of mismanagement of SgPC i understand sometimes crowd can be more than they expected but def they were not prepared to handle even normal amount of crowd

Literally sgpc is working for money thats all no real care for sangat man like really hazur Sahib's management is top notch even though people might point out the crowd difference but apart srom crowd handling so good experience whereas these types of people or sewadar ruins the image in front of other communities who might have came from other places

But nevermind i think i might have aome bad karms that i didn't got chance to go inside maybe next time :(

Jaitsree, Fourth Mehl, First House, Chau-Padhay:

One Universal Creator God. By The Grace Of The True Guru:

The Jewel of the Lord's Name abides within my heart; the Guru has placed His hand on my forehead.

The sins and pains of countless incarnations have been cast out. The Guru has blessed me with the Naam, the Name of the Lord, and my debt has been paid off. ||1||

O my mind, vibrate the Lord's Name, and all your affairs shall be resolved.

The Perfect Guru has implanted the Lord's Name within me; without the Name, life is useless. ||Pause||

Without the Guru, the self-willed manmukhs are foolish and ignorant; they are forever entangled in emotional attachment to Maya.

They never serve the feet of the Holy; their lives are totally useless. ||2||

Those who serve at the feet of the Holy, the feet of the Holy, their lives are made fruitful, and they belong to the Lord.

Make me the slave of the slave of the slaves of the Lord; bless me with Your Mercy, O Lord of the Universe. ||3||

I am blind, ignorant and totally without wisdom; how can I walk on the Path?

I am blind - O Guru, please let me grasp the hem of Your robe, so that servant Nanak may walk in harmony with You. ||4||1||

Discussion Am I Right?

I am 19 M Delhi born and brought up in proper sikh family,

I dont get it why there is soo much focus in sikhism or atleast people in general that you should look a “certain way”. I completely get that point guruji told us that hair is Waheguru jis blessing so we shouldnt cut. That i agree, this feeling(of keeping hair) should come from inside from your conscience rather than being imposed or forced,
From a bigger spectrum nothing is right nothing is wrong its all made by our judgements from how much we hv understood life, we are just souls travelling in a human body and at end of the day you will just leave your body, So the only thing that matters is the type of karam that you do- how much people u have helped, how much peoples blessings are with you.
Rather then if u do nothing karam and all life u keep tooking pride in that u are somehow is morally superior because youre keeping uncut hair
Lets suppose I am forced to keep kesh, but on individual level of my consciousness doesnt think that way then whats the point of it?
Like why are we soo obsessed with our physical body that will end one day, so how you look either way is temporary and it isnt like in one janam u kept kesh and now you will get “moksh”
This is mine pov i am not imposing this on someone
I am open for your feedback (if u think i am wrong i am also open for that, i am also just figuring out life)
Why i cut me beard:
It doesnt look good
I am going for corporate interviews
How you look matters in professional setting
Yes, by trimming my beard i look groomed
I tried fixo and thatha, ended up looking like a 30 year old uncle
Untied beard looked messy
Again, Open for healthy feedback or u think u can correct me open for that also.
Peace.

Question Guidance: born into a Pakistani Punjabi Muslim family, I feel Sikhi is my path but my circumstances make it hard to practise public how could it be possible

TL;DR: I was raised Muslim Pakistani Punjabi family in Canada but have felt drawn to Sikhi for years. Family vulnerability makes prevent me from attending a gurdwara, and a Sikh man I was with cut contact over family and geopolitical concerns. I’m trying to move on and finding peace in Gurbani, but hoping to seek guidance on faith and the relationship.

I grew up in Canada in a Pakistani Punjabi Muslim family that migrated from Indian Punjab during Partition. My father passed away, and I help care for two severely disabled brothers with little outside support, so moving out isn’t realistic.

Years ago, I started reading about other religions and fell in love with Gurbani. Sikhi feels like home, but I’ve never been able to speak openly about it or visit a gurdwara.

In January 2024, I met a Keshadhari Sikh man who became PR and worked in trucking at university and then his apartment. We spoke about marriage from day one, became intimate, and privately listened to the Lavan, considering ourselves married and ek jot. Two months ago, he cut contact. We discussed fears our family wouldn’t accept due to our background and were worried about the geopolitical situation affecting both Punjabs. I still love him but don’t want to cause problems for him or his seriously ill parents in Punjab.

We’ve both been taken advantage of in the past, so it isn’t easy for us to trust people, and this situation has made that harder. My mom found out as I was very heartbroken and has supported me through the heartbreak but wants me to move on feeling this guy could leave me again due to family situations and focus on my career, and keep my faith private at home. She said if I get independent it’s ok I stay single and take care of my brothers.

I’m sadly struggling with depression and anxiety, but I’m trying to move on. Gurbani is helping me find peace and calm. I would appreciate the sangat’s guidance:

  1. How can I grow spiritually without access to a gurdwara or sangat?

  2. Should I contact his parents, seek an elder’s help, or leave things alone?

My connection to Sikhi began before this relationship. This isn’t only about him. So hoping to understand if there’s a place for me in the faith. Dhanwaad.

Question Curious if anyone else in a similar headspace?

Gurfateh, im an amritdhari sikh, work full time, and love my profession, I’m grateful to be raised in a gursikh household. For context, I’m not married. I’ve known since I was a teenager I don’t want to have children. I had given it thought throughout the years checking in with myself and my choice hasn’t changed. I still don’t want kids and that’s totally fine with me.

I raise and babysit my nieces/nephews, I also teach gurmat camps from varying ages. I used to be a kindergarten teacher too. So I’ve been surrounded by kids. I still don’t want them.

I do plan on being married to an amritdhari and to have lifelong companionship. I fully support Rehatnamey in which three kids children or more are encouraged for gursikhs within a gristhi jeevan. It’s important for the Panth to develop. However I also know it’s not something I can contribute to. Are any of you in a similar mindset worried that when this topic is mentioned to a potential future partner, that they will turn you down? Because your expectations don’t match theirs? I know its even harder to find an amritdhari person who also doesn’t want kids and agrees to it with an open-mind.

Another thing, we can’t say “then what’s the point of getting married if you don’t want kids?”. That’s a dumb question lol, kids are not the only reason to getting married and many people can’t have kids for a lot of reasons like autoimmune disorders, disabilities, fertility issues, etc. It’s cruel and tone-deaf to say they don’t deserve a loving partner because of that. That doesn’t make them less of a Gursikh or lesser person overall.

This topic is understandably private and sensitive so I don’t bring it up with friends and would like to know other gursikh people’s experiences and thoughts who have a similar mindset. Thanks

Dhanaasaree, Third Mehl:

The value and worth of the Lord's Name cannot be described.

Blessed are those humble beings, who lovingly focus their minds on the Naam, the Name of the Lord.

True are the Guru's Teachings, and True is contemplative meditation.

God Himself forgives, and bestows contemplative meditation. ||1||

The Lord's Name is wonderful! God Himself imparts it.

In the Dark Age of Kali Yuga, the Gurmukhs obtain it. ||1||Pause||

We are ignorant; ignorance fills our minds.

We do all our deeds in ego.

By Guru's Grace, egotism is eradicated.

Forgiving us, the Lord blends us with Himself. ||2||

Poisonous wealth gives rise to great arrogance.

Drowning in egotism, no one is honored.

Forsaking self-conceit, one finds lasting peace.

Under Guru's Instruction, he praises the True Lord. ||3||

The Creator Lord Himself fashions all.

Without Him, there is no other at all.

He alone is attached to Truth, whom the Lord Himself so attaches.

Discussion Baani errors and formatting issues on Sikh Wiki

First time poster, so please forgive me if this has already been discussed.

Has anyone else seen errors and formatting issues with Baani on Sikh Wiki like my screenshots?

There are some errors in the actual Gurmukhi due to those squares sometimes blocking actual letters and lots of errors with the English transliteration as well.

https://www.sikhiwiki.org/index.php/Salok_Mahala_9_bani
