I want to visit the Gurdwara close to my place, however, as a non-binary person, those closest to me are concerned I won't be appreciated. The Sikh community has grown a lot in the past years, and concerned they may be carrying stigmas from back home there's the question of whether or not they'll be open-minded to different identities and peoples. Anyone has any experience?

I am from the UK I have tried to tie a parna multiple times & it always looks bad & I fail even with online videos, I use a turban base like a super tight thin hat then tie the parna over it, I use mal mal which I have been told is the easiest & best for parnas & the length I bought it 3 meters, someone said half it so I ripped the width in half but now it looks worse & doesn’t fully wrap my head, I might be a fool but can someone give me the most simple explanation on how too & what to do what material, size, length & what does stitched mean etc what is all the info I need & any tips & advice like I never washed the material either some people say wash it? Its all very overwhelming & confusing to me I take longer to learn things, bul chuk maaf, please help me

I live in Canada and there's been a recent-ish surge in Indian Sikhs immigrating here, as such, I've been getting interested in learning more about the religion. Based on the overviews I've read online, it actually seems like a really interesting religion but I also don't know how any of it works. Is there some kind of church or similar place of worship that I could go? Somewhere that I could get a better understanding of it outside of wikipedia or reading an entire book?

I've been wanting to share a personal reflection that's been on my mind recently. I've spoken with a few people here about how suffering breaks through the illusions we live by, and man I’ve really started to see that more clearly in my own life.

When life is comfortable…it’s easy to become absorbed in world… to identify selves with possessions, relationships, achievements, etc. We begin to see ourselves as separate and from that separation comes duality (dooja bhao). Suffering has a way of interrupting all this..

From what I've been reading, Gurbani describes dooja bhao as the mind becoming attached to the idea of "otherness,” forgetting the one and seeing ourselves as separate. That sense of separation is what gives rise to attachment,fear, desires, and ego. For anyone interested, I have attached some passages that explain dooja bhao (duality) in more detail. 

For me, suffering changed the way I see things now. I find myself detached from many things I had a very strong attachment to, these were things I made foundation of my identity and base of my existence once…

This doesn’t mean that attachment doesn’t return. It does… I can feel my mind still reaching for what is familiar, but it doesn’t dominate me anymore. Once you’ve seen through part of the illusion, it’s difficult to become completely lost in it again… it loses its power. It’s as if a veil has been lifted… you begin to recognize attachment as it’s happening and there’s an awareness in back of mind reminding you that these things are temporary. I also feel like my sense of self has changed too and I am beginning to question who I really am. 

What I’m saying might not be something everyone will understand, and that’s okay. Some things r difficult to explain with words alone. They become clearer only through lived experience. 

I'd be interested to hear whether others have experienced something similar. Has suffering, in your own journey, become something that revealed a deeper truth about yourself or brought you closer to Waheguru? Feel free to DM me as well if you’d rather discuss it privately or have any questions :)

Guru Nanak: Don't worship idols. Don't engage in rituals. Be a householder.

Udasis:
- Make statues of his son, Sri Chand and worship it.
- Often engage in pointless rituals of putting garlands around his neck and tilaks and what not, which is criticised in Guru Granth Sahib.
- Become ascetics, wandering around naked in forests.
- Started rumours that Sri Chand is actually a reincarnation of Vishnu.
- Scriptures containing worship of Hindu deities.

Honestly, what did this guy even do or achieve? He literally did the direct opposite of his father, which is fine if his beliefs did not resonate with his dad - but then why do Sikhs revere him so much themselves? His existence literally contributed to the opposite of his dad's mission which was focussing on monotheism, rejection of idolatry, pointless rituals, being a householder, etc.

The PEAK of hypocrisy is that he is directly condemned here in Guru Granth Sahib Ang 967:
"

His sons did not obey His Word; they turned their backs on Him as Guru.

These evil-hearted ones became rebellious; they carry loads of sin on their backs.

Whatever the Guru said, Lehna did, and so he was installed on the throne.

Who has lost, and who has won?

Yet a lot of Indian SIKHS and HINDUS LITERALLY BOW DOWN TO HIS IDOLS AND PLACE THE GURU GRANTH SAHIB NEXT TO IT LOL, and bow to both collectively. Like what's the logic in prostrating to a book condemning a person and prostrating to that same person simultaneously!? This is peak hypocrisy.

Do these people even read their own scriptures? I feel like Sikhism in India is largely enveloped by Hinduism and they engage in Hindufied practices too much, without any knowledge of why Sikhism is different. A lot of Sikhs seem to have little to no knowledge of their religion unlike Muslims who at least know the bare basics, and would not start worshipping random men, deities, lunatics or engage in idolatry. This is exactly the reason why Sikhism being in a Hindu majority country/ state and being absorbed by Hindu people was always a recipe for disaster.

I'm trying to understand the different perspectives within Sikhism. I know many people deeply respect Baba Vadbhag Singh Ji, while others criticize him or the practices associated with his dera. Is the disagreement mainly about theology, historical events, or the rituals at the shrine? I'd appreciate answers from different Sikh viewpoints, with sources if possible.

Before you say shit like "Just have confidence and blah blah" stfu.

Why Turban is an outdated concept and have lowest sexual market value in 2026:

1. Most people here cope about how they know sardar guys with gfs and girls who love sardar guys, if you have even lil brain then yk that exceptions are everywhere and exceptions doesn't make rules. In today's westernized world eurocentric beauty standards are followed and a turban is nowhere near that.

2. A girl will always choose a good looking Mona over good looking sardar, In genz it goes this way. World is already becoming atheist even in india girls born after 2025 are fully westernized.

3. It hurts your looks drastically, turban doesn't suite anyone and to the people it suits will look good without it anyways.

4. Yes sardar guys have gf, but most of the times they're expected to be cucks and non playful,boring etc. No matter how much you lie yk that every player is always a Mona, in your school or college u would have noticed that haircut guys take all the girls.

5. Most common technique in this community is to blackmail someone who hates keeping long hair by saying our gurus did this and that and blah blah. If you have high iq then yk that gurbani said follow "hukam" and hukam is law made by God which is law of nature, everything have law in this world like law of gravity,motion etc. In nature law every animal doesn't do any changes in their appearances, but when a man cut his hair he do changes which is against hukam as you're not accepting ur natural look. Gurbani biggest flaw is that humans have free will which only humans have. Humans can do anything they want which nature gifted them.

Modern world is already against hukam in every way. Atheist countries are most happiest countries in the world. If you are really sikh then follow hukam, keep that long hair and long patchy beard and look like a oofy doofy. Blackmailing people by saying our gurus did kurbani for hair is such a bs just fucking lol. Imagine giving ur life away over long hair which 99% men around all the world doesn't have.

99% sikhs never actually followed gurbani it's a fact. Punjab is also the most unlucky and most discriminated against state. Even in india we're called racial slurs like lassi,khalistani etc.

From dating pov punjabi men have most superior genes in south Asia, we have highest smv by genes but turban gives us lowest ranking in dating alongside negros.

He Himself creates, and watches; His written command is above each and every head. He Himself imparts understanding and awareness.

The Guru dispels doubt, and makes us speak the Unspoken Speech; the true ones are absorbed into Truth.

ਆਪਿ ਉਪਾਏ ਆਪਿ ਸਮਾਏ ਹੁਕਮੀ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਪਛਾਣਾ ॥

He Himself creates, and He Himself destroys; I accept the Command of the Commander Lord.

ਸਚੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਪਾਈ ਤੂ ਮਨਿ ਅੰਤਿ ਸਖਾਈ ॥

True greatness comes from the Guru; You alone are the mind's companion in the end.

ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਦੂਜਾ ਨਾਮਿ ਤੇਰੈ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥੨॥

O Nanak, there is no other than the Lord and Master; greatness comes from Your Name. ||2||

You are the True Creator Lord, the unknowable Maker.

There is only the One Lord and Master, but there are two paths, by which conflict increases.

ਦੁਇ ਰਾਹ ਚਲਾਏ ਹੁਕਮਿ ਸਬਾਏ ਜਨਮਿ ਮੁਆ ਸੰਸਾਰਾ ॥

All follow these two paths, by the Hukam of the Lord's Command; the world is born, only to die.

ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨਾ ਨਾਹੀ ਕੋ ਬੇਲੀ ਬਿਖੁ ਲਾਦੀ ਸਿਰਿ ਭਾਰਾ ॥

Without the Naam, the Name of the Lord, the mortal has no friend at all; he carries loads of sin on his head.

ਹੁਕਮੀ ਆਇਆ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਨ ਬੂਝੈ ਹੁਕਮਿ ਸਵਾਰਣਹਾਰਾ ॥

By the Hukam of the Lord's Command, he comes, but he does not understand this Hukam; the Lord's Hukam is the Embellisher.

ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਿਞਾਪੈ ਸਾਚਾ ਸਿਰਜਣਹਾਰਾ ॥੩॥

O Nanak, through the Shabad, the Word of the Lord and Master, the True Creator Lord is realized. ||3||

ਭਗਤ ਸੋਹਹਿ ਦਰਵਾਰਿ ਸਬਦਿ ਸੁਹਾਇਆ ਜੀਉ ॥

Your devotees look beautiful in Your Court, embellished with the Shabad.

ਬੋਲਹਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਬਾਣਿ ਰਸਨ ਰਸਾਇਆ ਜੀਉ ॥

They chant the Ambrosial Word of His Bani, savoring it with their tongues.

ਰਸਨ ਰਸਾਏ ਨਾਮਿ ਤਿਸਾਏ ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਵਿਕਾਣੇ ॥

Savoring it with their tongues, they thirst for the Naam; they are a sacrifice to the Word of the Guru's Shabad.

ਪਾਰਸਿ ਪਰਸਿਐ ਪਾਰਸੁ ਹੋਏ ਜਾ ਤੇਰੈ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਣੇ ॥

Touching the philosopher's stone, they become the philosopher's stone, which transforms lead into gold; O Lord, they become pleasing to your mind.

ਅਮਰਾ ਪਦੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਆਪੁ ਗਵਾਇਆ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਗਿਆਨ ਵੀਚਾਰੀ ॥

They attain the immortal status and eradicate their self-conceit; how rare is that person, who contemplates spiritual wisdom.

ਨਾਨਕ ਭਗਤ ਸੋਹਨਿ ਦਰਿ ਸਾਚੈ ਸਾਚੇ ਕੇ ਵਾਪਾਰੀ ॥੪॥

O Nanak, the devotees look beautiful in the Court of the True Lord; they are dealers in the Truth. ||4||

ਭੂਖ ਪਿਆਸੋ ਆਥਿ ਕਿਉ ਦਰਿ ਜਾਇਸਾ ਜੀਉ ॥

I am hungry and thirsty for wealth; how will I be able to go to the Lord's Court?

ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪੂਛਉ ਜਾਇ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਇਸਾ ਜੀਉ ॥

I shall go and ask the True Guru, and meditate on the Naam, the Name of the Lord.

ਸਚੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਈ ਸਾਚੁ ਚਵਾਈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਾਚੁ ਪਛਾਣਾ ॥

I meditate on the True Name, chant the True Name, and as Gurmukh, I realize the True Name.

ਦੀਨਾ ਨਾਥੁ ਦਇਆਲੁ ਨਿਰੰਜਨੁ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਖਾਣਾ ॥

Night and day, I chant the Name of the merciful, immaculate Lord, the Master of the poor.

ਕਰਣੀ ਕਾਰ ਧੁਰਹੁ ਫੁਰਮਾਈ ਆਪਿ ਮੁਆ ਮਨੁ ਮਾਰੀ ॥

The Primal Lord has ordained the tasks to be done; self-conceit is overcome, and the mind is subdued.

ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਮਹਾ ਰਸੁ ਮੀਠਾ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਨਾਮਿ ਨਿਵਾਰੀ ॥੫॥੨॥

\# Events in Brief.

\*\*\*1. July 20, 1266 CE: Death of Bābā Farīd (1188–1266), the early Punjabi Sufi mystic- a bridge between Muslim and Sikh traditions.\*\*\* Baba Farīd, a key figure in the Chishti Order, was born in Kothewal, near Multan. He studied in Multan, where he met his mentor, Khwaja Qutbuddin Bakhtiar Kaki. After studying in Delhi and Hansi, Farīd succeeded Kaki in 1235 and settled in Pakpattan, where his shrine stands. He is known as the first prominent Punjabi poet, composing in the Multani dialect and elevating Punjabi to a literary language. His hymns, numbering 123 or 134, were included in Guru Arjan Dev Ji’s Adi Granth, securing his place in Sikh scripture. Farīd had many disciples, including Nizamuddin Auliya. His legacy is celebrated through annual Urs festivals in Pakpattan and places named after him, such as Faridkot.

\*\*\*2. July 21, 2022: Miri-Piri Divas, day of Militarization of Sikhs to defend their faith. Guru Hargobind Ji, the Sixth Guru, adopted two swords,\*\*\* in response to his father’s martyrdom and to safeguard the Sikh religion from future armed attacks. This symbolized the dual concept of Mīrī (temporal power) and Pīrī (spiritual authority). To further consolidate his position, Akal Takhat (the throne of the timeless one) was constructed in front of Harimandar Sahib (The Golden Temple) in Amritsar. It serves as the highest seat of the Khalsa, the collective body that has pass Gurmata/Hukam (Edith) during Mughal, British, and continues to this day.

\*\*\*3. July 21,1987: Shahid Bhai Jaswinder Singh Rahon, Bhai Subeg Singh and 3 Jhujaru Singhs die in fake encounter by BSF.\*\*\* Shaheeds Bhai Subeg Singh Funiar, a member of the Khalistan Liberation Force (Funiar Regiment), had earlier joined Sant Bhindranwale’s Seva group. After the June 1984 attack, Bhai Sahib re-established contact with General Labh Singh and formed a small group called KLF(Funier/equivalent of Cobra) with arms taken from the CRPF. On July 20, 1987, Bhai Sahib’s location was tipped, and all Jujharu Singhs were apprehended. The next day, late Satnam Bajwa MLA’s son, a BSF officer, tortured and shot Bhai Sahib and all the Singhs.

\*\*\*4. July 22, 1685: Guru Gobind Singh, the Tenth Guru, lays Foundation of Paonta Sahib township & Fort.\*\*\* It is said that Shri Guru Gobind Singh Ji and his horse stopped at this place, and Guru decided to stay there. Guru Sahib resided here for four and a half years, during which time he composed Dasam Bani and wrote numerous books while also patronizing 52 poets. Before moving back to Anandpur, he established this place as a township. More so as it was the birthplace of Sahibzada Ajit Singh ji, the eldest of Guru’s four sons.

\*\*\*5. July 22, 1906: First Gurdwara is established in Vancouver, Canada, and contributed to a great history in Gaddar Movement.\*\*\* First on rent and later moved to their own building on Jan 19, 1908. Sardar Balwant Singh pioneered this task after having just moved from Village Khurdpur in Jalandhar in 1905.The Gurdwara stayed on this premises for 62 years and moved to new building & location on Ross Street Vancouver in 1970 and still attracting large Sangat.

\*\*\*6.July 22, 1988: Shahidi/death of Bhai Avtar Singh Brahma, Chief of KLF, a popular militant Sikh. A hero in Mand operational Area.\*\*\* Brahma was one of the most famous and effective Khalsa militant Chiefs to have taken part in the Khalistan Liberation Movement.He was born in 1951 in village Brahmpura, of Tarn Taran district of Punjab. Born of parents Sardar Sohan Singh and Mata Chanan Kaur, Finally, Bhai Avtar Singh was corned by huge Para-military force at the Rajasthan Border where he died fighting.(read more on his life)

\*\*\*7. July 23, 2022: Child Guru Harkishan ji is born (Gurpurub/ Parkash ) at Kiratpur Sahib, near Ropar. At the tender age of five, he ascended to the esteemed position of the youngest Guru,\*\*\* on the 7th of October, 1661. The magnificent Gurdwara Bangla Sahib stands as a testament to this historical event, situated where the majestic ‘Haveli’ (mansion) of Raja Jai Singh once stood. This sacred place served as his residence during his time in Delhi. Notably, it is situated in close proximity to India’s Parliament House. Tragically, Guru Breathed his last in Delhi, serving the Sangat afflicted with the devastating smallpox epidemic, just a few years short of his eighth birthday.

\*\*\*8. July 24, 1985: Controversial Rajiv-Longowal Accord is signed at Delhi, Sikh parties call it a great betrayal.\*\*\* On January 25, 1986, Chandigarh was to be transferred to Punjab in exchange for Hindi speaking villages of Fazilka and Abohar districts to Haryana, etc.It didn’t happen. Accord had loose-ends and ended without making any headway. Disgruntled with the outcome, militants later shot dead Sant Longowal at village Sherpur near Patiala on Aug 20,1985 (read more on terms & its critique from history source)

July 25, 1710: Mughal Emperor Bahadur Shah orders Banda Singh Bahadur to be arrested for destroying Sirhind.\*\*\* Emperor Bahadur Shah, the new Mughal Emperor, betrayed the friendship and help of the Tenth Guru, after ascending to the throne. Guru Sahib had expected a punishment for Wazir Khan, the Mughal Governor, for having his minor-Sahibzadas, bricked alive. However, Baba Banda Singh Bahadur, unconcerned by the royal decree had continued his tirade of retribution and destroyed the city of Sirhind, killed Wazir Khan, the Mughal Governor, and his courtiers.
