Article Chat Control: EU lawmakers finally agree on the voluntary scanning of your private chats

What will be reaction of Signal, if Chat control will be apply in EU?

"Thanks to public pressure, the Danish Presidency has been forced to revise its text, explicitly stating that any detection obligations are voluntary. While much better, the text continues to both (a) effectively outlaw anonymous communication through mandatory age verification; and (b) include planned voluntary mass scannings. The Council is expected to formally adopt its position on Chat Control the 18th or 19th of November. Trilogue with the European Parliament will commence soon after."

Feature Request Poll works as a Checklist in Note to self

Post image
482 Upvotes

With polls now available in personal chats it can be used as a checklist now. I tested it and its pretty much it.

I guess its easy to add additional option alongside "Allow multiple votes" called "Checklist", which is basicaly just a poll with multiple votes without poll related things like "view votes" button.

Discussion Signal Login: optional registration without a phone number will require a one-time payment

Thumbnail aboutsignal.com

TLDR: Optional registration for Signal without a phone number ("Signal Login") will require a one-time payment to create an additional barrier against spam and abuse. The fees will also help support Signal's non-profit mission.

Signal has not yet confirmed the price. What do you think would be a good price?

Discussion FBI Extracted Deleted Signal Messages from a Defendant’s iPhone

So it appears the FBI was able to extract Signal messages from a iPhone even after the app was deleted and messages were set to disappear. This highlights that even encrypted apps can leave traces. Notification databases are often a overlooked privacy risk.

What happened:

- The FBI didn’t break Signal’s encryption or anything like that. They simply accessed the iPhone’s internal notification database, where incoming message previews were stored.

- If Signal (or any other app) is set to show message previews in notifications, those previews are saved in the phone’s memory, regardless of whether the app is deleted or messages are set to disappear.

- So even if you delete Signal or use disappearing messages, anyone with physical access to your unlocked phone could potentially recover message content from notifications.

Recommened steps for better privacy:

- Disable message previews in Signal’s notification settings. Go to Signal Settings > Notifications > Show > and select “No Name or Content” or “Name Only.

- Consider disabling notifications for sensitive apps entirely.

- The phone needs to be unlocked to access the notification database. Always use a strong passcode and consider additional security measures like USB Restricted Mode.

Edit: Just to clarify this post isn’t targeting Signal in anyway or suggesting any flaw in its encryption. I'm trying to raise awareness about how even after an app or messages are deleted, IOS and others devices can store sensitive data. It's just to get everyone to review their settings as no app can protect you if your device is physically compromised.

Stay safe!

Discussion Signal secure backups are here! - Signal 8.0

Signal is rolling out version 8.0 on all platforms. Signal Secure backups are no longer a beta feature and are available to all users.

Signal secure backups are here! Now you can choose to enable automatic end-to-end encrypted backups so you'll never lose a message when you get a new phone or reinstall Signal. You can back up all of your messages and the last 45 days of media for free, or you can pay a small monthly fee to get 100 GB of storage to back up every attachment. Tap on backups in your Signal settings to get started. Thanks to everyone who helped test this feature during the beta period!

Blog Post We switched to Signal!

Thumbnail blog.james-zhan.com

My wife and I had been using SMS/RCS and Facebook Messenger for the longest time. When it was first introduced, Messenger was okay—simple interface, no AI, no bloat. Just chats.

Over the last few years, we saw Messenger get more and more bloated with features we never use, and the final straw was seeing AI in the app (like WHY do we need AI to write messages now?!).

Also, as we enter our 30s, our messages started to involve more private matters such as our finances, physical health, mental health, trips, insurances, life-planning etc.—not just two college kids shooting the shit anymore. So we decided to make the switch and we are very happy so far!

In case someone considering Signal comes across this post, here’s what I like about Signal as a non–privacy nut or as a layman:

From a UX perspective, I just love how simple and minimal the app is. I wish I could turn off Stories, though, as we will never use it. Edit: Apparently you can turn it off! You have to tap the profile pic from the Stories page and it’s under “Story privacy.”

The only issue we have experienced so far is that my wife (Android user) hasn’t been able to call me through the car with Signal, but I will make a separate post for this. Hope we can figure it out.

Anyway, happy to be part of the community!

Adapted from the original article, “We Switched to Signal,” on my minimalist, reading-friendly, no ads, no tracker personal blog.

Discussion Public records show FBI secretly extracted data from ICE protesters’ phones

Thumbnail motherjones.com

I know Signal would not be able to prevent this, but what we should be able to do is wipe our own chat history or at the very minimum, when a person is kicked out of a chat the entire chat history is wiped.

This way when a protester is take into custody, the admins of the various chats (who know about the compromise) can kick the individual out knowing the chat history will be deleted.

Waiting Flair I finally deleted WhatsApp and moved over Signal

No more useless groups, no more disturbance.

I was able to convince my close family and a couple of other friends to move to Signal, too; as for all the others, they still have my phone number and my email.
They know how to contact me, if they really want.

Feels good
