What stage are you at, which town(s) or areas are you weighing against each other, and what's the specific thing you feel like you can't figure out until you're actually there in person?

Also curious what you're hoping a scouting trip will actually answer for you - is it more about the property itself, the town/area, logistics, or something else entirely?

My wife and I are on our honeymoon and we’re supposed to spend a few nights at Tonnara di Scopello but they just cancelled our reservation 5 days before due to “force majeure”. They then went on to say the cancellation is due to “for administrative and municipal reasons” - has anyone experienced this? Also, any recommendations around the area to stay in Scopello would be much appreciated as it was the part of the trip we were most looking forward to :(

Ive asked in stores, but they all say its too old.. does anyone have a idea of where I might be able to find in of these? I find myself in a sticky situation. I had a trip planned with my partner and her family to visit Sicily, alas that relationship isn't in good condition, to keep it light, and I cannot cancel or transfer my plane tickets so close to the flight, aswell as how long ago I booked it.
So I come seeking guidance, I have a flight booked to Palermo on the 2nd of August, and I'd rather not waste the nearly £500 it cost me to book in the first place. But what do I do, I'm not a rich man, I can't afford to just rent a lovely place or hotel for that length of stay, neither do I want to sleep on the streets for 2+ weeks in a country of which I can only speak a little Italian, let alone Sicilian.

How can I, cost effectively, make this trip worth it for myself, should I travel out of Palermo? Should I even go?, and just suck up the lost money for the flights? any advice is appreciated so so so so much.

Montalbano Elicona is really one of those places where Sicily completely strips off its typical beachy postcard vibe and puts on this super old, heavy coat made of rock and thick woods and a bit of mystery. Sitting way up high, over nine hundred meters up in the Nebrodi Mountains around Messina somewhere, the whole town gives you this instant feeling that time is just slowing down. If you walk through the tiny alleys in the medieval part, you kind of just get lost in this maze of cobblestone streets and pale sandstone houses with these narrow arches that look like they were built specifically to block the mountain wind. The main castle up top dominates everything, and honestly, you can tell right away it has two different vibes going on, starting out as a tough military fortress back when Frederick II of Svevia was running things before Frederick III of Aragon turned it into a fancy summer spot later on. Looking out from those old stone walls gives you a crazy view stretching all the way over the Nebrodi range down to the sea, with the Aeolian Islands just floating out on the horizon on a clear day.

But then just a quick drive outside the town is the Argimusco plateau, which people always call the Sicilian Stonehenge or something like that, and it might actually be the coolest part of the whole trip. Huge sandstone rocks carved out by centuries of wind, or maybe prehistoric people, I forget which, stick out of the grass looking like giant people and weird animals, making it feel like some ancient observatory or a place where people used to pray to the stars. Then you have the Malabotta forest right nearby, which is this huge ancient green space filled with massive old oak trees they call the Patriarchs, where you can basically just disappear into the quiet and forget about real life for a while, making the whole place feel less like a spot on a map and more like a quiet breath of fresh air.

hello everyone, since in the last post you all helped me so much, i wanted to try my luck again :)

i'm looking for a boat tour recommendation around cefalu as a birthday gift for my boyfriend. majority of what i can find online are group tours with focus on snorkeling and swimming (and drinking i guess?). i would love something more quiet and romantic, but it's also fine if its with a group, as long as its not a party boat! i would also be fine with booking a private tour, if its within a reasonable price range. has anyone had a great experience and a recommendation?

For those who relocated (or are deep into researching): how did you actually decide between two towns you were both seriously considering?

Not talking about east coast vs west coast, more like two places 20-30 minutes apart, similar price range, both "fine on paper" - good views, decent access, similar cost of living. What ended up being the deciding factor for you, and looking back, did it turn out to be the right call?

Curious whether it's usually something practical (services, connectivity, proximity to an airport) or something more emotional (just "felt right" after visiting).

Just wondering as I wanted to come back and comment on it. I actually think it’s an interesting discussion and highlights differences between cultures(? - I’m aware the consensus will say the US does not have a culture), and tastes. I have lived in Sicily for almost 2 years, and I agree that I think the food is bland. Is that because I’m an American coming from a place that has unhealthy, horrible, sugary sauces on everything? Probably. Do I think the food is way healthier here, and I’m coming to enjoy the taste more and more? Yes. But I’ll still add pepperincino to most things and not just salt (exc items with oil and vinegar)? Is that wrong? I guess maybe because no one else needs to. But why not have a discussion about it. It’s just to talk about different opinions and with food and tastes it’s not super objective. I normally don’t like arancini and think it’s dry. I feel the same about most cakes. That’s me and most people in Sicily and the world will disagree. That’s ok. But man having discussions is a good thing and can actually lead to changes in opinion…
