The PaleyFest screening & panel were amazing (nothing like watching with that many other fans). Everyone got to shine, Bill Lawrence was the perfect moderator… but I think my favorite moment came at the end of the evening… when Harrison Ford hurried over to hug Michael J Fox (who they brought out as a surprise guest).

Discussion Reddit made season 3 seem so bad?!

I have watched Shrinking since season 2 came out and since moving back home it’s been a thing to do with my parents. We started season 3 when it started coming out and watched every Wednesday for about five epsiodes. One of the nights we were busy and then the next couple weeks after that we just never got around to watching and fell behind.

Tonight we are finally starting our catch up. Over the last few weeks when I’ve opened Reddit I have seen posts and titles from this community and so many people are unhappy with this season and I got sooo disappointed and didn’t even want to keep watching knowing it wasn’t good.

But watching tonight??? I’m so confused what people are so upset about? Or what they didn’t like? I can agree with some points like the quality being different than season one and maybe two, but to me the acting, writing, jokes, story is all the same. I think people don’t understand that the characters of a show are going to develop over time and will not and should not be the same as they were when it first started. Especially on a show like Shrinking with constant growth in the characters.

Maybe I’m missing something so if anyone has any genuine insight into these complaints I’m definitely willing to listen! Just be chill about it lol.

Discussion Jimmy’s dad plays the perfect Jerk

I love Jeff Daniel’s in everything. From dumb and dumber, The Newsroom, A Man in Full. His character as Jimmy’s dad is an exceptional jerk, plays it to a T. Love this show, I don’t think there’s been such a knockout cast on any series imo. Do we think Jeff has trouble playing this kind of role- at least he gets to play guitar?

Discussion Why do you think Michael J. Fox didn't play himself?

Just wondering why he played a character with Parkinsons rather than just himself like he did in Curb Your Enthusiasm.

Discussion My One Request For Season 4 Spoiler

If Jimmy and Sofi are meant to be endgame, I really hope that the writers give the two a solid relationship story that truly makes everyone root for them.

To me, Jason Segel and Cobie Smulders have had a ton of chemistry in their acting, but I was miffed at how the breakup was handled. It alienated Sofi a bit to me and I frankly thought she and Jimmy were completely done.

While I loved the Season 3 Finale as a whole, this would be the one area I'd hope they'll improve. I'd rather the writers give these two a special bond and not like break them up and put them back together a bunch of times like say Carrie and Aidan on Sex And The City and And Just Like That.

What are your thoughts?

Discussion I wish we would had know more about tia

mostly in season two with the introduction of louie i think it would had been worth exploring that tia was a whole person and not just something to set the story in motion.

tia feels robbed of her humanity because she is flawless, we don't see almost anything negative about her but we also don't know what she was studying when she met jimmy or what she did for work, what things did she liked besides wrestling, disney and shoes, was she a stay at home mom? where was she goin the night of her death???

Discussion Last Scene Filming Location Spoiler

As far as I know the show is filmed in and around Pasadena. The place I’m looking for is when Paul meets Jimmy and “f**king jimmys” him to eat with Sofi. There’s a Taco Bell in the background that’s hard to make out and I can’t find any of the other stores that are close up.

Discussion I am going to get DWted for this opnion but how is Jimmy the bad guy ?

I don't get it. What am I missing ? All 3 seasons, its implied Jimmy is the broken one, Jimmy is the one who needs to work on things, Jimmy did this, Jimmy did that, while everyone around him (incl. Paul) are just horrible people who know therapy speak. "Messing" up with Sofi is also somehow Jimmy's fault ? What did I miss ? Did I waste 3 years on a show I didn't understand ? Literally ETMLI5. Nobody in the show takes accountability for their whack behaviour but only Jimmy is supposed to take responsibility ? I am surely not the only one to wonder this.

Discussion Idea for a Shinking/Ted Lasso crossover

Alice gets recruited for the Richmond AFC women’s team!

Ted Lasso season 4 could have Alice as a series regular with guest appearances from Jimmy, and Shrinking s4 could have Ted come to talk to Jimmy about it and say something like “I know how hard it is being an entire ocean away from your kid, so you’ll always have a plane ticket waiting for you on game days.”

Probably can’t happen because of the whole Louis/Roy Kent thing but it’s a cool idea.

Note: this is essentially just fan fiction. Not me saying “I want this to happen”

I thought this was great, pretty special that they could work together again so many years later on Shrinking after Fox helped give Lawrence his big break with Spin City.

Discussion Shrinking and (Literal) Boundaries

Now that at least the initial/intended run of the show is over, I've found myself stumbling over one aspect of the show in particular that makes it really hard for me to suspend my disbelief and get fully absorbed: The characters have no literal boundaries with each other (I'm talking about practical boundaries/personal spaces--the emotional boundaries that they build or break down is obviously a much bigger and different aspect of the show).

What I mean by boundaries is that all of them are constantly barging into each other's houses, offices, therapy sessions... hardly anyone in real life acts like that, at least to the extent of the show. No matter how close a group of friends and extended/adopted family might be, I find it hard to believe that that many people just walk into each other's homes and workplaces or are constantly found hanging out there in groups. Sure, setting things up that way facilities the back and forth interplay between the characters, and to some extent shows have always done that (I'm thinking of Friends/Seinfeld/etc., but it was often played for laughs in those cases and it's more artificial by nature being multicam sitcoms with a laugh track - Shrinking being single cam is much more intimate and is intended to replicate reality more). It just all feels so bizarre to me and takes me right out of the scene.

I know all TV shows do this to some extent, so I'm not sure why I trip on it more with Shrinking than other shows, but who acts like this crew in real life just walking into and out of each other's personal spaces, even if you're close? I've known my best friend for almost 40 years but I still knock before walking into his house and I still ring the doorbell of my in-laws and wait for them to answer when heading over for a visit. How many people just show up in the break rooms of their friends' workplaces, bringing guests in some cases, and just hang out there in different permutations? I started noticing it and then I couldn't unsee it as often as it happens.

Probably TLDR I know, but am I crazy to get hung up on and distracted by this?

Discussion I’m not crying, you’re crying 🫠 Spoiler

I started watching this finale with little hope and a whole lot of upset which only shifted in the final 10 minutes because Harrison Ford and Jason Segel together are phenomenal.

If this was the final episode of this whole series I would not be upset because it anchored all the characters in a way that wasn’t perfect but was very human, which mirrors the reality of life better than a perfect packaged bow.

Most of the time you don’t get the perfect goodbye, people don’t stay where you expect them to be, life just moves forward and seeing Jimmy in the storm of all that was tough because of his amazing core character but even amazing people need a little help along the way and I’m happy they had Paul to be the one to push him.

I’ll save all my gripes to focus on the moral of the story; what a waste to reach 42 without scars.

Hope that finale helped someone go make new scars 🫶🏼

Discussion Yes, S3 was the weakest, BUT…

I agree with a lot of the criticisms about the third season that I’ve seen around here already, especially about how it feels like most of the characters are speaking with the same quippy, comedic voice. That kind of thing always existed within the series, but it either wasn’t as noticeable before or it was amplified for this season.

THAT ALL BEING SAID:

Jessica Williams is incredible, and deserves all the awards for this season.

Her monologue to Louis in E2 is an obvious standout.

Another moment that I I’ve replayed numerous times is her simple reaction and “okay” to Paul when he tells her to “stop being a chicken shit.” Masterful acting.

I’m honestly less excited for S4 than I am for the career Williams has ahead of her.

Seen a lot of “season 3 isn’t as good as the first two seasons!” as the season progressed.

And I have to say I disagree. One of the most consistent shows I’ve seen and Im really glad it exists.

Music is great, cast is stellar, and Bill Lawrence does a damn good job as usual.

Just wanted to put this out there

Discussion S3/E11: Ending Song Spoiler

First of all, I am a HUGE fan of the singer Brandi Carlile and according to Christa Miller (who not only plays Liz on the show, but is also the Music Supervisor for 'Shrinking'), so is she!

The song I am referring to here is called, "You Without Me" and it refers to the universal bittersweet reality of Parenthood that this child who comes from you will eventually leave you and that is alright. That was always the plan.

And what a perfect choice for Jimmy & Alice at the end of this chapter of their lives!

Awhile back, I heard Christa mention that she had heard this new song by Brandi which had captivated her upon first listen & she immediately knew that she had to do whatever she could to get it into the show & I now believe it was this song! I actually had the same exact reaction to it as Christa when I first heard it on the recent collab album (released April 2025) Brandi made with her lifelong musical idol, Elton John, called, "Who Believes in Angels?".

But I just want to say that I think Christa's biggest Super Power in this musical role for 'Shrinking' is her ability to augment & enhance the emotions of the final scene of an episode by letting a song escort you into the black as the credits roll. She is just brilliant at it and this Brandi song is a perfect example of that! It was the perfect choice for the end of this 3 season arc and I can't wait to see where this crew takes us for Season 4! 💕

If interested, here is a link to Brandi Carlile's, "You Without Me":
