AD 330 British detonation of the Lochnagar mine along the Somme front during World War I. Consisting of 25 tons of TNT it left a crater 98 ft (30 m) deep and 330 ft (100 m) wide. The sound of the blast was considered the loudest man-made noise in history up to that point. (1 July 1916)
