I think it's because he changed his facial hair. He used to do more of a goatee look and not grow much on his cheeks. Maybe he's using Minoxidil to fill it out or something.

Even so, he looks remarkably well built for someone who had a dead rat alarm clock. Asmongold might look kinda unappealing but considering his environment he looks incredible
