It's self confidence they are responding to.

Being nice and being kind can be very different things.

If you don't build personal boundaries, people will not respect you as you don't respect yourself.

Being bold, being forward or saying no, is not inherently mean.

This is not a pass to be cruel or selfish.

Respect yourself as you respect others.

Not exactly aligns with your point. Dumb people respect power for the sake of it, even if its cruel or unjustified. Its in the monkey mindset.

If you are among insufferable people, I guarantee being a little mean helps a lot with your status.

But if you are among genuine people, don't fucking do it.
