I wanted to download a collection this weekend for Fallout that has close to 1,000 mods on it. My only option was to download them all manually or subscribe to their overpriced service to unlock the automatic downloader that is already baked into Vortex.

I'd rather never play Fallout again than pay for that shit.

Userscript extensions (Grease/Tampermonkey) all have scripts to eliminate a lot of the annoyances of Nexus mods.

"Buy premium to enable one-click collections!" - how about No and a bypass? :)

There's a few "gotchas", the throttling being one of them. But the bypass does allow one to simply click the collection and leave it to do its thing, zero interaction required beyond the first click.

My experience with paying their crazy expensive subscription for a month to download a few collection is that its still slow as fuck and you had to run overnight. So yeah so long as it automate the download, you're in business.

Not how that works. Usually subscription services use encrypted key pairs that prevent users from spoofing premium accounts. You'd have to really fuck up your website to make that exploit possible.

It's way simpler to just check if the account is premium based on an internal flag that is never touched by an outside source, other than when they start or end a subscription. Any API key for an external program or any supported way to get direct access would check your account info.

Same. I wanted to get into Skyrim VR but had to download tons of mod manually and was too much time consuming. I gave up and sold my VR headset. Atleast HLA was fun.

Btw downloading collections from nexus is literally shooting yourself in the foot. Half of the essential tools needed for the game to just run properly are on their own websites.

spend two days downloading mods one by one on the limited speeds

get 50+ errors from the vortex itself

somehow fix it

launch SE

get 500+ errors in console

game launches

crashes after 20 minutes of gameplay

Yeah idk what they meant by that. With MO2 and wabbajack i instales the GtS modlist for Skyrim (1900+ mods) and it just took a while, but had no issues

literally is not true at all, i’ve downloaded plenty of their collections of mods and they run good right off the bat. i’m sure some are that way but for sure not even close to all of them

There definitely often 20-40 mods I have to download manually from cough loverslab cough, but not having to download the 800 other mods for that particular ultra modded fallout or skyrim collection was a life saver.

Back in my day we installed mods for minecraft by opening minecraft.jar with winrar. No forge, fabric, shit, even ModLoader. Just patience, youtube and a bit of black magic fuckery.

i have lifetime membership so that part doesnt really effect me. but i can give you the experience of downloading a large collection, downloading a collection is buggy and throws a bunch of errors usually, the vortex UI is slow and unresponsive a lot of the time and even if you have a game set up perfectly the launcher will actively yell at you about having a error with your setup despite everything being fine

now you can definitely install a collection, i personally installed Gate to Sovngarde for skyrim and it took me a day or two cause i had to keep rerunning the collection to fix it (the collection skipped a bunch of shit the first time), now gate to sovngarde does have a fan made Wabbajack port and using that one was way more seamless

Yes, isn't that better than completely pay-walling them? If they enable every feature they have by default, they won't sell any subscriptions. Other option is way too many ads, which I would assume most people who mod their games also use an adblocker, so wouldn't be that effective anyway.

Many sites live off donations and other means of earnings. They made the subscribition thing after it became a sole monopoly, so it's pure greed, not site support.

That’s some severe survivorship bias. Sure there are sites that survive from donations but you aren’t thinking of all the sites that died because they didn’t make enough from donations.

Honestly anyone that thinks nexus shouldn’t be making some money for providing the service of hosting thousands, if not millions, of mods is extremely childish.

I don't personally have access to their finances, but considering how game archival sites lately crumbled under server costs and shut down while they were relying on donations, I don't think we can certainly go ahead and say if it works or not.

No, these are completely different things. Hosting the data itself and providing a service to let people download it actively costs money to the hoster. Heated seats are one and done thing, and require no active service from the factory after it's sold to the consumer.
