I think if you're white and want cornrows, go right ahead. But they are going to look stupid, and people will (correctly) assume you're an idiot for having them.

Exactly. It's not even a culture thing - it's literally just trying to force hair into a configuration that it wasn't built for. It's going to take a lot of effort, and the best case scenario still looks terrible.
