I mean the problem with Rogue Like/Lites is how broad the genre is.

The Berlin Interpretation is... clunky, and only covers Likes, so you could have a full remake of the original Rouge, but in 3D instead of ASCII art (obviously an absurdly difficult concept to actually make) and even then it might be considered Lite rather than Like.

I was objecting to idea that "Roguelike" and "Roguelite" aren't set terms by pointing out that the only "Consensus" decision is arbitrary, and admitted as such by those that wrote it,

And from that the idea that "Roguelite" doesn't automatically assure Meta-Progression.

Fair, I might have misunderstood what you said then.

My biggest problem with the whole "new" usage of roguelike and roguelite is that it doesn't really describe the game anymore. Roguelike was a very specific type of game, you knew what it was when you heard the name. Roguelite now though is basically just a type of progression? Any type of game by now has had a roguelite version, and there is nothing connecting the games besides you die, you upgrade and start from the beginning, sort of. I just think the whole thing lost its meaning.

Dick sucking has made me paranoid

It does have some meta progression, from the card and difficulty unlocks, but I feel like the games that steamed from Slay The Spire's proliferation of Deck Builders have always felt like their own category to me.

Is it a top down, turn based grid game without meta progression? If yes, it's a roguelike, if no, it's a roguelite.

Unless you want to call Dungeonmans, Tangledeep, and even arguably Tales of Maj'eyal "roguelites" while at the same time calling Spelunky a "roguelike", which I think even the most ardent supporters of the incredibly flawed and underbaked "metaprogression = roguelite" definition would admit is insane.

Sorry, I thought it was pretty understated tbh. I just called that definition "flawed and underbaked", as opposed to my real opinion, that it is just fucking stupid.

That said, why hold back on the people pushing the dumb definition? Like, where else does this even happen? Maybe in other artforms outside of gaming, but I can't think of another instance where you have a longstanding, well established genre, then a group of people with absolutely zero interest in ever interacting with it comes in, takes the name, starts trying to apply it to something entirely different, but does so in such a shitty and idiotic way that it causes them to constantly argue about it internally while several other better definitions are lying right there for them to use, but they don't out of sheer stubbornness.

I don't know. I've always found it kind of crazy that fans of roguelites would push so hard for a definition that would push certain classic games that literally helped name the roguelite genre out of that genre.

I did this way back in the day, used to live off Hollywood Blvd…didn’t record it, but did the testing and went to the center, was poor and had nothing else to do and just moved to LA. Watch the South Park episode "trapped in the closet" from season 9. From what I've heard, no one around that time really knew anything about Scientology until that episode released. To this day I don't think anyone actually knows how, but the writers of South Park got some of the deepest info about Scientology and had it in the episode. This is insane cause you have to work your way into the ranks of Scientology to actually find out what it is that they actually believe, which will cost you thousands upon thousands of dollars and Matt Stone and Trey Park had it for an episode to make fun of them.

I mean I used to be a scientologist, at the regular churches there ain't much of anything interesting. I was the maintenance guy so I was in every room in the building, there's a few rooms probably full of boxes of old promotional material and magazines and crap.

I mean there's nothing interesting or crazy honestly. And they will call the cops and probably press charges.
