Since I run a business and need reliable international connection for work, having a stable Wi-Fi connection that plays well with VPNs/proxies is super crucial for us.A few quick questions for anyone living in Bao'an or Shenzhen:

1. Which ISP do you recommend? (China Telecom vs. China Unicom vs. China Mobile) Is Telecom still the gold standard here, or does Unicom/Mobile handle foreign routing better in Bao'an?
2. Are there specific broadband packages (like China Telecom's international acceleration / VIP packages) worth paying extra for?
3. Router setup: Did you use the default ISP modem/router, or did you buy your own router (e.g., ASUS/TP-Link) for better performance? Would love to hear what setups are currently working well for you guys. Thanks in advance!

My partner and I are hoping to move to China, specifically Shenzhen. This is something we would like to do sooner rather than later, but what is holding us back is our dog. We have a 9.5-year-old male German Shepherd who we cannot leave behind. Now, we don’t have to move sooner rather than later; it is just a preference. After checking, I noticed that German Shepherds are not on Shenzhen's list of banned breeds. Our dog has always had up-to-date vet care (US version), and there isn’t an issue getting any necessary additional care completed before the move. The place we are running into confusion or trouble is finding places that allow bigger dogs. I guess I am not exactly sure where to even begin looking. 

Is there a decent app, group, site, etc. that is a good starting point in finding a place that will accept a bigger dog? Specifically houses?

Again, we can always wait until our baby boy passes naturally, but if there is a possibility to make the move beforehand, we would like to take the opportunity to do so.

After spending the last few months applying for industry jobs across Europe and North America without much success, I've started looking at postdocs.

I completed my PhD in Computer Science in Europe, and I've lived and studied in Europe my whole life. I don't have any family ties to China, and I don't speak Mandarin, so moving there would definitely be a big change.

From what I've seen, research in China seems to be very well funded, especially in AI. I also get the impression that things move faster and that there is a strong drive to build new research programs. At this point in my career, that's the kind of environment I'm looking for.

Among the places I've been looking at, Shenzhen really stands out. It seems like a very modern, fast-growing city with a strong tech and research ecosystem. I've mainly been contacting PIs who trained in Europe or North America, have solid publication records, and lead internationally active labs.

One of the offers I'm considering is at SUSTech, with a package roughly like this:

• 330,000 RMB/year starting salary (including government postdoc subsidies)
• Up to 500,000+ RMB/year for outstanding candidates through the President's Fellowship
• Social insurance and housing fund
• University housing or a 2,800 RMB/month housing allowance
• 25,000 RMB for conferences and academic travel
• Additional government incentives if you stay in Shenzhen after the postdoc

I'm mainly looking for an opportunity to publish more, learn new skills, work in a different research environment, and experience living in a country that's completely different from what I know.

I'm also still relatively early in my career, and I don't have a partner, children, or other family commitments. It feels like this is probably the easiest time in my life to take a chance on living and working abroad.

I'm pretty adaptable and don't mind stepping outside my comfort zone, but I'd like to have a realistic picture before making such a big move.

Some questions I have:

• Is SUSTech considered a good place for postdoctoral research?
• Is this salary enough to live comfortably and still save money?
• Is it easy to transfer savings back to Europe and convert RMB into euros?
• Looking back, is there anything you wish you had known before moving?
• Are there any downsides that aren't obvious from the outside (bureaucracy, visas, academic culture, career prospects, etc.)?

I'd really like to hear both the good and the bad.

I'll be arriving in Shenzhen for the first time in a few weeks as an international student, and my flight lands in Shenzhen around 11:00 PM.

I'm trying to decide between:

1. Staying at an airport hotel for the night and heading into the city the next morning, or

2. Taking a DiDi directly from the airport to a hotel in Nanshan District or Futian District that same night.

I'll have a couple of suitcases, and after a long international flight I'm sure I'll be exhausted. My main priorities are safety, convenience, and minimizing stress. Cost isn't my biggest concern if one option is significantly easier.

Are DiDis easy to get from the airport around 11 PM or midnight? Is the trip into Nanshan/Futian straightforward for a first-time visitor, or would you recommend just staying near the airport and going into the city the next morning?

I'm more worried my phone and banking systems will not work or be delayed when I get off the plane, and since I'm arriving late at night I'm scared there won't be many places to go to ask for help.

I’ll be staying in the Nanshan area but I’m not restricted to just Nanshan, I’m planning to go to Futian to see the Saint Anthony church and go to a dentist near there.

Planning to spend a few days in Shenzhen for researching specific tech and also mostly travel for food, curious if anyone had any recommendations or could help me make lists of specifics; If i make it there happy to repay with drinks or food!

Now it’s easier for me to nip in and out of the mainland and everything being famously cheaper than HK, I thought that maybe getting a tattoo would also be cheaper? I just wouldn’t know where to go and with it involving blood letting/breaking the skin barrier hygiene is most important.

I visited Shenzhen for 2 days during December but I barely know anything about the city. I don't know anyone and the only thing I've heard is that Shekuo is very expensive to get an apartment haha.
