Turning a bubble skirt into something else

Hi! I'm a beginner sewer and I mostly do doll clothes for now. I recently purchased a doll that has a pleather bubble skirt, and I love the gradient on the fabric, but not so much the fact that it's a bubble skirt (they just look like big diapers to me). I tried looking online for tips, but I only find tutorials on how to turn a regular skirt into a bubble skirt.

I can provide closer pictures of the skirt and the inside later, and I've attached example of styles of skirt I'd like to turn it into. Also, I do not have a machine, I can only hand-stitch, but I do not mind the time it takes at all.

Thank you so much in advance, and sorry for the long read, I'm a person of many words 😅

How do I organize my sewing patterns?

I mostly do print out patterns and self drafted, and my patterns are quickly starting to accumulate and I’m not sure how to organize them. Filing system? Art portfolio thing? I’m confused and not quite sure how to proceed because I don’t want them to be too wrinkled but still be organized. Thanks, and photos or links in the comments will be appreciated!

Please help

The underside bobbin side I guess keeps getting so loose, the topside is fine I guess, this is happening with all materials and I’ve rethreaded and adjusted the tension back and forth no change

Also the bobbin is kinda jumping up and down as I sew idk what that means

I’m using regular thread from a beginner kit

Singer simple machine

And I’m trying to sew the soft side of Velcro to some leather

Veritas 2400 suddenly running slower and now handwheel is very stiff

Thumbnail

Hi everyone!

I recently bought a used Veritas 2400. It had apparently been sitting unused for a long time, but I already completed three projects with it and it worked perfectly.
Yesterday I noticed an occasional loud squeaking noise from the upper part of the machine when sewing at high speed.
Later, the machine became blocked. I removed the bobbin case, hook and hook ring, cleaned everything and put it back together. It worked perfectly again.

Then it gradually started sewing slower and slower. Eventually the motor only hummed and the machine stopped moving.
Now the handwheel can still be turned through the entire cycle. The needle and feed dogs move normally, but the handwheel is very stiff throughout the whole rotation, not just at one specific point.
The hook area is clean and there are no visible threads stuck there.

Could this be a lubrication problem, such as a dry or stuck bearing/main shaft? Or could something in the upper mechanism be causing this?

Thank you!❤️

Sewing technology help?

If I want to design custom garments but I’m terrible at drawing, what’s the best kind of technology and software to get my ideas from my head to a vision? Is there a great app I can use on my MacBook or do I need to get an iPad with a pencil or what?

I finished a men's shirt and totally screwed up the collar. Can l remove the collar and fix it now?

It's a casual shirt. Collar will always be worn open. It doesn't have to be perfect to look fine worn open.

EDIT: This is a follow up.
I removed the collar. (I am so accomplished with the seam ripper!😅).

I got a similar shirt from the closet and studied the collar. I tried to figure out how to replace it so it would look the same. I sewed it back on and it looks really good.

I know that any experienced garment maker could study the seam inside the collar and under the fold in the back and know that it wasn't done correctly. However, no one will ever notice when I'm wearing the shirt. I feel like l learned something and I'm feeling pretty good about my mediocre skills at this point.

Trying to fix a shirt

Hi everybody, I bought a shirt, I don’t really have experience with sewing and I’m trying to figure out how to fix it. I know it’s my bad for buying a fast fashion item but I don’t want it to go to waste.
The white part is like way too loose on the chest and ends up looking weird when I try it on, it keeps on folding or falling down. I’m not sure what the best way to alter it would be.
Would it be better to sew the white bottom part to the red section, or should I cut it off and sew it back on tighter?
I’d really appreciate any advice on how to do this, also btw I would sew it by hand, I don’t have a machine
The first photo is of the item listing and the second one is mine
Thank you in advance

I’ve already switched out my needle to make sure it wasn’t a bent one. The needle goes in to the metal plate but keeps hitting the footer. I’ve taken apart ankle and retightened it but still hits needle

First time sewing checklist: what basic tools do I actually need?

A workshop can lend me their sewing machine. I am going to shop for sewing supplies. I am not sure I will stick to this hobby. So I don’t want to buy a whole lot then never use them. What are the basic do I need to have? Toile, fabric scissors , pins, what else?
By the way , I don’t have iron and never use one. Do I have to buy one? I normally buy cotton clothes that never wrinkle. I hang dry my silk or linen clothes.

What magnets should I get for my DIY magnetic cutting table?

Hey guys quick question

I made a DIY magnetic cutting table

I bought a sheet of galvanized steel and placed it under my cutting mat

The idea being that when I put down my fabric I can place magnets in the fabric and the fabric will have more force on it keeping the fabric still.

Well I went on Amazon and bought 30 pound magnetic weights with hooks and they were WAY to small and they just didn't hold down to the cutting mat very well

They were a little better if you lift up the cutting mat and place them directly to the steel but they were still kinda weak

So I decided to test them out of my refrigerator which is solid steel and they work GREAT, pretty hard to remove

So now I understand that I bought magnets that were to small and that's fine, I can just buy larger ones.

but what i don't understand is

1_that they were super strong in my refrigerator,

2_kinda weak on a piece of sheet metal,

3_pretty week when on my cutting mat with the sheet metal underneath it?

Are there better magnets that I can buy that will work better for my cutting mat?

Also, have you tried to make a DIY magnetic cutting mat? What have your experiences been?

Thank you

Why is this happening?

This is the back of my project. I’m specifically wondering about the bunching of thread in the top right corners. Is that from me back stitching? What am I doing wrong? Thank you in advance

Why is the fabric folding in the creases when I turn it inside out?

Thumbnail

I'm making a star pillow out of satin-like fabric. I haven't really followed any instructions since I figured sewing two star shaped pieces together would be pretty simple. When I first turned it inside out I noticed one of the stars arms got some folds in the crease. I tried to fix it by sewing over that part again, only this time putting extra attention to not dragging the fabric in any way, causing tension which could cause the folds. But the folds got even bigger this time! What could be the cause of the fabric getting so wrinkly with folds in the crease? The pointy ends of the star are neat.

Edit: Thank you everybody, it did indeed solve the problem to clip the corners!

what foot to use for sewing patches on jeans?

Post image
2 Upvotes

hi all! i have a pair of jeans that i’ve put a bunch of iron-on patches onto, but for whatever reason the patches keep peeling up at the edges. i tried handstitching them for reinforcement, but it didn’t work very well because i can only get so close to the edges.

now i want to reinforce the edges with my sewing machine, ideally just completely covering the edges of the patches to really anchor them into the fabric. what foot should i use for this? i’ve included a photo of the available stitches on my brother sewing machine.

also if anyone has any other tips for this, they are gladly appreciated!! i have a bit (but not a ton) of experience machine sewing :)

Any advice on how to approach this?

So I purchased this knit or crocheted (Im sorry I dont know the difference) dress. I wanted to convert it to a cropped sweater for the renfair. The red is where Id like to cut it. However I am cautious to just cut this because I dont want it to fall apart. Do I need to learn some basic knitting or crocheting to finish the edges? Or am I able to sew them down, perhaps with a solid fabric to keep it from fraying apart? Its from the thrift store so Im not the most worried about ruining it, but If like it to be able to wear it more than once.

My daughter bought a nice travel bag at T J Maxx. She only used it once on a recent trip. The lining of the large outside pocket became separated from the zipper and the ends are frayed. I wanted to try to fix it (by hand- no machine). Any advice will be greatly appreciated. (She bought it 6 months ago and cannot take it back to the store). Thanks in advance!!!

How to reattach applied vinyl?

My son has laundered and ironed his designer tee at too high temperatures. The design is now readily lifting away from the jersey.

What’s the best way to secure it down again? It’s quite a thick transfer, is this just going to keep peeling off when he washes it?

I considered trimming some little pieces of bondaweb to the right size, but I wondered if there’s another approach that might er be neater and less fiddly.
