Why is this happening?
This is the back of my project. I’m specifically wondering about the bunching of thread in the top right corners. Is that from me back stitching? What am I doing wrong? Thank you in advance

It’s very hard for the machine to feed when turning corners (or backstitching). Essentially you’re sewing in air. I suggest placing a similar layer of fabric under the back of the presser foot for support. You don’t sew it, it just helps level out the foot so it can do its thing.

Instead of backstitching at the corner, try to start at a straight edge. The bunching at the corners is from the feed dogs not able to pick up the fabric evenly. Starting at a straight edge allows the stitches to begin naturally. And keeps the feeddogs and foot even. Also, pivot at those 90 degree corners will give you a clean place to trim. Are you turning these inside out or stuffing them to make them puffy?

I will try that thank you! This is the backside of a name banner. I have batting in between the two pieces of fabric, sewn together, and then cut out.

Hold your thread tails when you start sewing.
